Abstract:A modified indirect algorithm for extracting real permittivities from measured resonant frequencies has been developed. It is based on the perturbation theory along with the Newton iteration method, and improves the speed of the calculation with a factor of 2-4. It is superior, especially when system matrices under calculation are large. Based on the complementary advantages of the modified algorithm and a direct algorithm, a mixed algorithm of high speed and accuracy has been described. A real measurement system incorporating the linear fractional curve-fitting method and the mixed algorithm has been built to measure complex permittivities of high-Q materials.

Abstract:Based on NRW theory, a new method is presented for determining the complex permittivity and permeability of the linear materials by scattering coefficients. The coaxial line fixture is used to facilitate the measurement of the material's scattering coefficients. With the scattering coefficients, the complex permittivity and permeability of the linear materials as a function of frequency can be determined by this method. Comparing with former methods, it can solve phase ambiguity; and results of the method can be more precise in the wideband. This method also can be used in determining permittivity and permeability of left-handed materials. © 2009 by Editorial Department of Chinese Journal of Radio Science.

Abstract:Theory for measurement of complex permittivity using short-reflection method based on wave-guide six-port reflectometer system is researched on.The complex reflection coefficients at measurement reference plane,which measured by six-port reflectometer,are used for calculating the relative permittivity and loss tangent of material.A new numerical solution for solving the complex transcendental equation is presented.The new method obtains initial value by taylor method,then gains the ultimately results by the grads method.It avoids the appearance of many useless solutions of complex transcendental equation.The test results show that it can measure the relative permittivity of material quickly,uniquely and accurately.

Abstract:Noncontact measurements of material parameters have important applications in various fields. In this paper, we propose a noncontact measurement of complex permittivity for electrically small samples at microwave frequencies. Based on Rayleigh approximation, we propose a noncontact measurement approach that can linearly retrieve complex permittivity from the measured impedance change. Using a subwavelength resonance, far-field radiation can be effectively suppressed, and thus the measurement is not notably influenced by unwanted environmental reflection. With the features of simple calibration and noncontact measurement, our method can be widely used in repeated on-site measurements of complex permittivity for small-sized samples at microwave frequencies.

Abstract:A new method is presented to determine the complex permittivity and complex permeability of electromagnetic medium at microwave frequencies.The physical model of the method is set up,and the formulas for calculation of the microwave parameters of the materials are obtained by theoretical analysis.The test setup and test system are developed,and the time-domain gating technique and the calibration technique are discussed.Several materials were measured in the frequency range of 8～12GHz,and the results indicate that the test method and system are correct,reliable and practical.

Abstract:The cavity method for measuring complex permittivity and complex permeability was studied of film. On the basis of the characteristic of electric-magnetic field in cavity and the small volume of film, large mode index high quality factor and smaller coupling coefficient were used. TE105 mode for the rectangle cavity under frequency 2.0 GHz was designed. Aglient network analyzer and scanning technique were used for reflection measurement. The complex permittivity and complex permeability of film were calculated according to resonant frequency, quality factor with empty and load and volume of sample. The operation of the method was easy and the accuracy was high.

Abstract:Noncontact measurement of complex permittivity at microwave frequencies is significantly important in various areas of scientific research and engineering applications. In this work, we experimentally investigate a noncontact solution based on nonlinear inversion algorithms which is used in through wall imaging (TWI). Experiments are performed using a setup with the object surrounded by a closed wall. The inversion is based on a twofold subspace-based optimization method, and the results show that the complex permittivity of the object can be successfully retrieved from the measured data. This TWI solution can be modified to achieve a noncontact measurement method.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the strongly coupled magnetic resonance and the Rayleigh approximation to the non-contact measurement of complex permittivity, and further extend the same principle to radio frequencies by employing a sub-wavelength split-ring resonator excited by a microstrip line. Experimental measurements show that by applying the proposed approach, while the impedance matching and a high quality factor can be simultaneously obtained, the complex permittivity can be linearly retrieved from the measured change of impedance. The measurement setup can be easily calibrated for both solids and liquids, making it suitable for the measurement of complex permittivity of bio-materials.

Abstract:The paper based on coaxial line measurement system, analyzes the traditional algorithm of NRW, and with reference to the literature [6], sorted out an improved algorithm. By use of existing equipment in laboratory—vector network analyzer (AV3620), under 1-6GHz conditions, two kinds of low-loss and non-magnetic materials—PTFE and Air—were measured scattering parameters, improved algorithm for measured value and traditional algorithm for measured value are compared. Can be drawn from the experimental data, the method can effectively solve thickness resonance and multi-valued problems in traditional algorithms, thus the reliability and validity of the improved method have been verified effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a new one-port microstrip line permeameter using the perturbation method is presented. A short-ended circuited microstrip line fixture was designed and implemented. Completely new analytical calculation formulas and a two-step measurement procedure were applied to deduce the complex permeability of the material in the frequency range from 100MHz to 5GHz. The measured results showed good agreement with the Landau–Lifchitz–Gilbert theory.

Abstract:A realization of automatic system for the complex permittivity measurement of low-loss materials by using a cylindrical cavity is described in this paper.According to the frequency and the quality factor of the cylindrical cavity unloaded and loaded,the system can calculate the permittivity ε′_r and the loss angle tangent tanδ of the materials being tested.In order to improve the precision of the system,the cylindrical cavity of fixed length is measured with sweeping frequency method;in order to avoid disturbing modes,the cylindrical cavity is inspired with signals of reverse phases and is made with some notches on the inside surface.The results of some low-loss materials tested under this system are quite satisfactory.

Abstract:A practical method for determining the broadband microwave complex permittivity of particulate materials is described. In this method, particulate materials are dispersed randomly in paraffin wax; thin disc samples are prepared for measurement from the particle-wax mixtures. During measurements, the samples are backed by a conducting plane, and an open-ended coaxial probe is used to determine the permittivity of the samples. A mixture equation is used to calculate the permittivity of the particulate materials from the permittivity of the samples. The validity of six well known mixture equations is examined. The experimental results indicate that only the QCA-CP and Bruggeman mixture equations can accurately describe the microwave permittivity of the particle-wax mixtures over the wide particle concentration range. To validate this described method, the complex permittivities of PbTiO3 and Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 particles are determined over a frequency range of 0.2 to 6 GHz. The determined results are found to be in agreement with the coaxial transmission/reflection measurement results. The advantages and limitations of this method are also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The waveguide method of measuring the complex permittivity parameter is used,and then an automatic measure system(8GHz~18GHz) based on VC++ is built.The measurement using VNA(Vector Network Analyzer) with sweeping frequency not only could get the frequency characteristic of complex permittivity but also make the choice of correct result in the different results of transcendental equation convenient,and the accuracy of measure results is improved too.Through actual measurement,the automatic measure system is easy to operate and works at high speed.The tested results reach high accuracy and satisfy the requirements of project.

Abstract:A refined algorithm is presented based on the traditional NRW transmission-reflection method (T/R method). According to the magnetic property of the material under test, the algorithm can get different solutions, then obtain the complex permittivity and complex permeability of magnetic material simultaneously or the complex permittivity of nonmagnetic material. It solves the half-wavelength divergence problem and the multi-roots problem which exist in the traditional NRW algorithm and overcomes the machining and assembling problem of thin samples which is required in the traditional algorithm. Tests of air and PTFE are carried out to verify unreliability of this test system and the results are consistent with true values.

Abstract:A novel technique has been successfully developed, based on cavity perturbation, to measure the complex permittivity in microwave frequencies of various thin film materials. The technique was experimentally verified with a 0.81 μm thick ceramics film of MC-91 (BaO-(SmNdLa) 2O 3- Bi 2O 3-TiO 2) at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. The total relative error of the measurement was found to be less than 7%, of which 3% originates from the film thickness evaluation.

Abstract:To mitigate the two limitations existing in the conventional procedures of Nicolson-Ross- Weir (NRW) method, namely thickness resonance and multi-value problems, an alternating iteration algorithm is proposed for accurately retrieving the complex permittivity of non-magnetic materials based on rectangular waveguide measurements. The mechanism for the generating of the two limitations are reviewed and explained with the detailed procedures. Then, two different types of formulas are combined together for alternately iterative calculation, effectively eliminating two limitations simultaneously. The proposed algorithm has been described, and verified with numerous simulations as well as experiments, exhibiting robustness and high accuracy.

Abstract:Noncontact measurement of complex permittivity at microwave frequencies is significantly important in various areas of scientific research and engineering applications. The noncontact solution based on nonlinear inversions proposed before are usually set up in 2D scenario. While in experiments, it is hard to restrict the wave vector of incident wave in the horizon plane. In this work, we theoretically and numerically investigate the performance of the subspace-based optimization method (SOM) for two-dimensional objects when considering an oblique incidence, of which the wave vector deviates from the horizon plane. Analytical and simulation results showed that the theoretical model can effectively estimate the deviation introduced by oblique incidence.
