Abstract:Our entry into "an Era of University Ranking" is a double-edged sword.As competition in all walks of life tends to become increasingly fierce today,it is impossible for us to go back to those good old days without university ranking game at all."College Rivalry" refers to those pairs of colleges and universities,who are close to each other in their academic achievements and overall strength.Competition between those college rivalries could be easily found among higher education institutions,esp.research universities.In the Era of University Ranking,such competition between research university rivalries is to be further intensified,as university rankings actually magnify the seemingly small gap between those pairs.We should not have blind faith in university rankings,nor should we simply dismiss it as nonsense.A blind faith in those rankings is even worse than sheer ignorance of them.Anyhow,competition between college rivalries is a commonplace,or rather inevitable phenomenon in today's university ecosystem.

Abstract:U.S.News & World Report ranking of graduate schools is an important part of its university ranking. Indexes,data sources and the statistical method of graduate schools ranking are based on the characters of graduate schools,which are scientific and operable;Graduate schools ranking appearance in China is late and the ranking methodology is from other countries.Though we also focus on the characters of graduate schools in China, ranking indexes,data sources and the characters of different graduate schools are inferior to the methodology of U.S.News & World Report ranking of graduate schools.Consequently,we should focus on the relationship between the particularity of graduate schools and the ranking methodology in order to achieve the localization of ranking methodology.

Abstract:Global university rankings have reshaped the landscape of higher education (HE) across various parts of the globe. The intensified competition stirred by these rankings has significantly affected academic lifestyles. The quest for global university rankings has also inevitably increased the degree of homogenisation amongst universities. Given the negative impact of global university rankings on university development, these rankings have been criticised as game playing, whilst some countries and institutions are beginning to withdraw themselves from the competition. This article sets out against the above context to review Chinese government's response to the challenges and its policy changes. Findings suggest policy responses occur very differently in different areas. Instead of simply following the rules and criteria set by global university rankings, China is trying to set its own criteria. This article contributes to the theoretical and practical understanding of China's responses to the global rankings.

Abstract:University rankings are a convenient argument,because the higher education institutions are not equivalent to univer-sities.These rankings feature at different angles,based on various indicators,and the results are also different,but they are common that the research is used as a core indicator.Under the driving of rankings,many higher education systems around the world get the impulse to build a few world-class universities,and even more serious is leading to the "academic arms race".And it result in many adverse consequences,such as convergence of universities,waste of educational resources,dislocation of knowledge and social needs.Ellen Hazelkorn keenly points out the defects of current rankings based on the perspective of university's entrepreneurship transition and strategic development of higher education,and sets the idea of focusing on creating a world-class(university) system rather than building a number of world-class universities.There is an important value to establish the scientific concept of development and cor-rect the blind impulse of educating for all kinds of higher education institutions.

Abstract:At present,about 66.07% of universities have been established in local administrative areas,whose school running levels have direct influence on the quality of China's higher education.But there are many problems among these universities,such as unclear objectives in cultivating talents,no distinguishing features in running universities,no significant teaching achievements,no close connection with local industry and social economic development and etc.Facing such problems,the paper proposes that the local universities should set up a kind of brand new concept in school running,establish diverse objectives in cultivating applied talents,serve and help to upgrade the local industry and search for unique system to enhance the influence and display of university running.

Abstract:This review paper focused on the high-impact research metrics, current state of higher education system and world university rankings of China. First, the research prospects in China described internationally with number of research field. Now, the largest field of research in China is engineering. In recent years, China ranked 1 st position for publishing documents & citable documents among the world. China always ranked 1 st position in high-impact research metrics on engineering field. The total number of Chinese Nobel laureates are thirteen (13). Secondly, an overview of higher education system in China presented with educational statistics. The enrolment procedure in Chinese universities to participated in National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gaokao). In the recent years, the acceptance rate of Gaokao have increased. Now the number of high school graduates who attend in university is more than 60%. The number of foreign students has also increased rapidly. Finally, Academic ranking of world universities shown that there are four Chinese university placed in Top 100 university category. The best four Chinese universities are Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University & Shanghai Jiao Tong University respectively.

Abstract:During the 1920s and early 30's,with rapid increase in the number of higher education institutions(HEIs) in China,there appeared a noticeable decrease in their teaching quality.People at that time criticized this situation and proposed some suggestions for solving the problems.Most of them,no matter they were Chinese or foreigners,thought that the major problems with China's higher education were the following: indiscriminate founding of HEIs,imbalanced geographical distribution of HEIs,improper academic departmental structure,as well as inefficiency in education.Other problems include: too many specialized schools,esp.private schools,had been upgraded into universities;the number of liberal arts colleges and arts students far exceeded that of polytechnic institutes and science students;HEIs mostly were located in metropolises such as Peking and Shanghai;moonlighting were very common among faculty,etc.The above-mentioned problems did exist,but those comments on schools' teaching quality were not all true.

Abstract:The development of the World University Rankings (WURs) has produced the following paradox. On the one hand, the WURs are often criticized for their ranking methodology and logic. On the other hand, the WURs are growing in influence worldwide. Universities are caught in a vicious cycle of pursuing indicators, which has a negative impact on the sustainability of higher education. In order to explain the development paradox of WURs, this research uses sentiment analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling to understand how the WURs thrive amid controversy by analyzing the emotion and cognition in 18,466 Chinese public comments on the WURs. The research found that (1) although the Chinese public has mixed feelings about the WURs, the overall sentiment is positive; (2) the Chinese public perceives the WURs through four main perspectives: standpoint cognition, dialectical cognition, interest cognition, and cultural cognition; and (3) the public is more concerned about whether their standpoints are met, whether their interests are reflected, and whether their individual experiences are verified but rarely think about the problems of ranking from a dialectical perspective. The need for ranking has always existed but the issue of ranking has often been ignored, leading to the development paradox of rankings.

Abstract:Under the background of global economy,higher education is becoming a market,which is oriented to market demand.University-Ranking is convenient for consumers to get more transparent and effective information as well as compare them.With the fierce competition of knowledge economy and globalization development,university-ranking developed into global ranking.This paper introduces three global university rankings which are widely spread at present——Academic Ranking of World Universities,QS World University Rankings,THE World University Rankings.By analyzing the differences between university-ranking and university-assessment,it expounds the former as a "trademark" or "brand" of the market.Moreover,global university ranking is beneficial for the higher education quality assurance,but inappropriate index design and the blind chase of "world class universities" may result in misleading or impeding for strategic development of each country's higher education quality.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Building on Leydesdorff, Bornmann, and Mingers (2019), we elaborate the differences between Tsinghua and Zhejiang University as an empirical example. We address the question of whether differences are statistically significant in the rankings of Chinese universities. We propose methods for measuring statistical significance among different universities within or among countries. Design/methodology/approach Based on z -testing and overlapping confidence intervals, and using data about 205 Chinese universities included in the Leiden Rankings 2020, we argue that three main groups of Chinese research universities can be distinguished (low, middle, and high). Findings When the sample of 205 Chinese universities is merged with the 197 US universities included in Leiden Rankings 2020, the results similarly indicate three main groups: low, middle, and high. Using this data (Leiden Rankings and Web of Science), the z -scores of the Chinese universities are significantly below those of the US universities albeit with some overlap. Research limitations We show empirically that differences in ranking may be due to changes in the data, the models, or the modeling effects on the data. The scientometric groupings are not always stable when we use different methods. Practical implications Differences among universities can be tested for their statistical significance. The statistics relativize the values of decimals in the rankings. One can operate with a scheme of low/middle/high in policy debates and leave the more fine-grained rankings of individual universities to operational management and local settings. Originality/value In the discussion about the rankings of universities, the question of whether differences are statistically significant, has, in our opinion, insufficiently been addressed in research evaluations.

Abstract:This paper explores the impacts of research excellence evaluation entailed in global ranking exercises, a control strategy characteristic of new managerialism, on Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) academics. The enquiry combines the Critical Incidents Technique (CIT) and internet-based discourse analysis, drawing on mass media texts and social media discussions. Our analysis identified three major dilemmas that may be created for Chinese HSS academics by their country’s aspirations for world-class universities embedded in its complicated socio-political context. First, a highly centralised system restrains academics’ autonomy to decide what to research and where to publish. Second, they are conflicted by the need to simultaneously attend to nationalistic interests and publish internationally. Third, ideological correctness is highly important. These findings invite us to reflect on the profound impact of university ranking exercises as a mode of university governance on HSS academics in many contexts.

Abstract:Since the “985 Project”,Peking University and Tsinghua University has obtained more sup-port from the government,which makes them ahead of other Chinese universities and become pacesetters and symbols of Chinese higher education.At present,the two are speeding up the construction of the world first-class university.However the academic circles have no conclusion about how to define the world-class university.Little is known about to what extent and in what respect Peking & Tsinghua uni-versities lag behind the world-class universities either.This article,from the perspective of world universi-ty rankings,selects worldwide recognized “Times Higher Education”world university rankings and the QS world university rankings as the basic analysis frame to observe the distribution of highly ranking universi-ties across countries.Furthermore,it makes a comparative analysis between two Chinese top universities and world-class universities (top 20)in order to find the problems and gaps and put forward some sugges-tions on building world-class universities in China.

Abstract:China is an important player in global university ranking exercise. Nevertheless, existing studies have not adequately explored how the legitimacy of adopting university ranking outcomes has been chronologically established on Chinese soil. This paper attempts to fill this knowledge gap drawing on interviews with 37 stakeholders between 2003-2021 and an analysis of 2086 articles and reports published between 1984-2022 concerning university rankings. It first analyses the process of institutionalization of adopting university ranking outcomes in China, and discusses how the policy initiatives such as the '985 Project' in 1998 and the 'Double First-Class' Project in 2016 intertwined with university rankings over the time and provide opportunities for establishing such legitimacy. Secondly, it analyses the mechanisms through which university ranking outcomes gain legitimacy, and suggests that interactions among the stakeholders are one of the key mechanisms, whereby the central government plays a pivotal role in legitimizing adoption of international university ranking results. Furthermore, we argue that the universities have responded actively to adopting the ranking outcomes and use them as strategic tools to achieve their own goals. As such, this paper sheds a new light on the impact of university rankings in China and beyond.
