Abstract:The radioactive noble gas radon is identified as the highest risk factor for lung cancer after smoking. The exhalation of radon from building materials can contribute to the radon indoor activity concentration. Therefore, the emanation of radon might be a crucial factor. It is defined as the release of radon from the solid soil matter into the pore space of the material. This article describes a new on-site measurement method for the emanation of radon from building materials at industrial sites. Therefore, a closed vessel with sample material and a passive radon detector inside is used to measure the integrated build-up-curve of the activity concentration. Additionally, a brief overview on existing radon emanation measurement methods is given.

Abstract:An automatic measuring apparatus called exhalometer for measurement of the radon exhalation rate from soil is introduced. It consists of a pneumatic driven accumulation chamber with an open bottom, a PC-based control system, six Lucas cells for radon measurement and sensors for environmental parameters. It allows moving the accumulation chamber and hereby opening or closing it. The exhalation rate is determined through the increase of radon in the accumulation chamber. For studying exhalation and the affecting factors, the exhalometer was placed at an undisturbed meadow for the entire year of 2015. The daily radon exhalation rate ranges from 2.5 to 50.7 Bq m-2 h-1 with an average of 25.3 Bq m-2 h-1. The exhalation rate shows daily and seasonal variations with its maximum in the afternoon and in spring. The dependence on several environmental parameters is discussed. The stable performance indicates the system's fitness for long-term measurements.
Numerical analysis and modeling of two-loop experimental setup for measurements of radon diffusion rate through building and insulation materials

Abstract:Radon is a natural radioactive gas present in the environment, which is considered as the second most important lung cancer cause worldwide. Currently, radon gas is under focus and was classified as contaminant of emerging concern, which is responsible for serious biological/health effects in human. In presented work we propose the numerical model and analysis method for radon diffusion rate measurements and radon transport parameters determination. The experimental setup for radon diffusion was built in a classical, two chamber configuration, in which the radon source and outlet reservoirs are separated by the sample being tested. The main difference with previously known systems is utilization of only one radon detector, what was achieved by a careful characterization of the Rn-222 source and development of a numerical model, which allows for exact determination of radon transport parameters by fitting simulated radon concentration profile in the outlet reservoir to experimental data. For verification of the developed system, several insulation materials commonly used in building industry and civil engineering, as well as, common building materials (gypsum, hardened cement paste, concrete) were tested for radon diffusion rate through these barriers. The results of radon transmittance, permeability and diffusion coefficients for investigated materials are in compliance with values known previously from the literature. The analysis method is fast and efficient, and requires measurement period varying from a dozen or so hours up to 2-3 days depending on material properties. The described method is entirely based on a numerical analysis of the proposed differential equation model using freely available SCILAB software and experimental data obtained during sample measurements.

Abstract:Determination of the radon emanation rate from solid materials has been the objective of many studies. The experimental method most often used for determining the radon emanation rate is the so-called “closed chamber” method, in which the growth of radon concentration in a closed chamber is used as the basis for the calculation. Usually, only certain regions of the concentration growth curve are used for calculation purposes, specifically, the initial region of the curve, or the equilibrium value to which it converges. In spite of the experimental simplicity of this method, the mathematical procedures used to calculate the free emanation rate (defined as the emanation rate to an infinite space of air) raise many questions, the answers to which are often contradictory from one implementation of the method to another. The objective of this chapter is to provide quantitative values of the inherent bias in determining the emanation rate for various experimental conditions in the closed chamber method. Quantitative comparison is made among the mathematical models most often applied. An assessment is provided of the usefulness of each model for its assumed geometry of measurement.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from rocks, building materials, and soil can be harmful to human health, so it is necessary to measure radon and its exhalation rate. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to simulate radon exhalation from different medium surface by using a solid Rn-222 source, and the radon exhalation rate can be adjusted by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas. Firstly, an experiment was done to determine the activity of the Rn-222 source, and then the theoretical radon exhalation rate can be quickly calculated from the relationship between the radon source activity and the bottom area of the radon accumulation chamber. Three sets of comparative experiments were conducted using two radon accumulation chambers with different volumes, respectively. Comparing the average values obtained from the experiments with the calculated theoretical values, it can be obtained that the differences corresponding to the two radon accumulation chambers between the theoretical radon exhalation rates and the experimentally average values are all within 6%. Without replacing the radon source, the radon exhalation rate is inversely varies with the bottom area of the chamber. Therefore, the correctness of adjusting the radon exhalation rate by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas to simulate radon exhalation from different media surfaces is verified. This method can be used to calibrate the radon exhalation measuring instruments.

Abstract:Measurements of radon exhalation rate using traditional methods can be affected by back-diffusion or differential pressure in the accumulation chamber, resulting in deviations between the measured and the true values. To obtain an accurate radon exhalation rate for evaluation of radon-risk regions, two novel approaches of measurements based on traditional methods were proposed. Repeated experiments were implemented on a self-designed stainless cylindrical vessel filled with uranium tailings sand. The measured radon exhalation rates on average were 0.51 ± 0.02 and 0.52 ± 0.02 Bq m −2 s −1 for the two proposed methods, with 0.02% and 0.04%, respectively, deviations from the theoretical value. In addition, numerical techniques were employed to interpret the defects of traditional methods and mechanisms of proposed approaches to measure accurate values. Two novel approaches have significantly reduced the impact of back diffusion and differential pressure inside the chamber and consumed less time.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to perform a series of measurements of radon and thoron exhalation in the underground workings of an experimental coal mine. In the years 2012-2015, experiments on underground coal gasification were carried out in a coal mine, which caused, among other effects, damage to rock mass. Afterward, periodic increases in the concentration of potential alpha energy (PAEC) of radon decay products in the air were found, which could pose a hazard to miners. The question posed was whether the gasification experiment resulted in the increased migration of radon and thoron. If so, did it increase the radiation hazard to miners? The adaptation of the existing instrumentation to the specific conditions was conducted, and a series of measurements were made. It was found that the measured values of radon and thoron exhalation rates ranged from 3.0 up to 38 Bq·m-2·h-1 for radon and from 500 up to 2000 Bq·m-2·h-1 for thoron.

Abstract:Accurate measurements of the radon exhalation rate help identify and evaluate radon risk regions in the environment. Among these measurement methods, the closed-loop method is frequently used. However, traditional experiments are insufficient or cannot analyze the radon migration and exhalation patterns at the gas–solid interface in the accumulation chamber. The CFD-based technique was applied to predict the radon concentration distribution in a limited space, allowing radon accumulation and exhalation inside the chamber intuitively and visually. In this study, three radon exhalation rates were defined, and two structural ventilation tubes were designed for the chamber. The consistency of the simulated results with the variation in the radon exhalation rate in a previous experiment or analytical solution was verified. The effects of the vent tube structure and flow rate on the radon uniformity in the chamber; permeability, insertion depth, and flow rate on the radon exhalation rate and the effective diffusion coefficient on back-diffusion were investigated. Based on the results, increasing the insertion depth from 1 to 5 cm decreased the effective decay constant by 19.55%, whereas the curve-fitted radon exhalation rate decreased (lower than the initial value) as the deviation from the initial value increased by approximately 7%. Increasing the effective diffusion coefficient from 2.77 × 10 −7 to 7.77 × 10 −6 m 2 s −1 made the deviation expand from 2.14 to 15.96%. The conclusion is that an increased insertion depth helps reduce leakage in the chamber, subject to notable back-diffusion, and that the closed-loop method is reasonably used for porous media with a low effective diffusion coefficient in view of the back-diffusion effect. The CFD-based simulation is expected to provide guidance for the optimization of the radon exhalation rate measurement method and, thus, the accurate measurement of the radon exhalation rate.

Abstract:The National Institute for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection, under the European project 16ENV10 MetroRADON (the European metrology program for innovation and research, EMPIR), has developed unique equipment for the testing of measuring devices at low-level radon activity concentrations. The equipment consists particularly of an airtight low-level radon chamber (LLRCH) with an inner volume of 324 liters; a Rn-222 type RF 5 flow-through source with a Ra-226 activity of 4.955 kBq developed by Czech Metrological Institute within the above-mentioned project; and a pressure vessel as a radon-free air source. The mass flow controller of the Bronkhorst EL-Flow type is a part of the apparatus and ensures the requested airflow through the radon source—partialized if necessary—through the chamber. The homogeneity of the atmosphere in the chamber is ensured by means of a continuously regulated fan (airflows in the range of 0.1–3.5 m·s−1 can be established). Another important chamber component is the measuring device of climatic conditions, since temperature, air pressure, and relative humidity must be determined. The construction of the equipment allows the time-stable radon activity concentration to be maintained at a precise level for several days. Radon concentration values can be arbitrarily and continuously set in the range from 100 Bq·m−3 to 300 Bq·m−3.

Abstract:In this paper, One-dimensional diffusion of radon in the natural environment was used to simulate by a simple device. According to experimental results, combined with Fick's law, it can be fitted that the effective diffusion coefficient D e of radon in the soil in this experiment is 1.8 × 10 –6 ± 6.6 × 10 –7 m 2 s −1 , the soil radon equilibrium concentration is 25.1 ± 2.4 kBq/m 3 , the radon exhalation rate on the soil surface is 47 ± 17 mBqm −2 s −1 . The radon exhalation rate of soil surface was measured twice by an accumulation chamber, the measured results are similar to the calculated results.

Abstract:Indoor radon concentration depends on many factors, one of the most important of which is the surface emanation rate of house construction materials. The surface emanation rate of radon in an existing building may be calculated from indoor radon concentration measurements, provided that parameters such as the air exchange rate are known. However, it is important to be able to determine the surface emanation rate from laboratory measurements in order to preselect materials for building purposes. Laboratory data usually yield the mass emanation rate (Bq kg-1 h-1) or the emanation coefficient of the investigated material, while for application purposes, knowledge of surface emanation rate (Bq m-2 h-1) is more important. Surface emanation rate cannot be calculated from mass emanation rate simply from the dimensions of the material. The purpose of the present work is to define the best means of relating laboratory emanation data to the surface emanation rate of radon. It is shown here that the surface emanation rate, E(s), may be correlated with the mass emanation rate, E(m), by the relation E(s) = E(m)rho-d or E(s) = E(m)rho-L, where rho is the density of the material, L the radon diffusion length in the material, and d the half-thickness of the material. Factors which may affect the theoretically calculated surface emanation rate are discussed.

Abstract:The semi-conductor SRDN-3a probe, an AlphaE detector with a silicon diode in a diffusion chamber, an AlphaGUARD monitor with an ionization chamber and CR-39 track detectors had been tested simultaneously in long-term measurements conducted in the technical corridor of Dobromierz dam. The passive detectors were exposed twice: for 56 days, and 117 days, others in parallel, with a 1-h data recording interval. The data distribution was tested with the Shapiro–Wilk test and outliers in the critical region were identified using Shewhart control charts. The correctness was evaluated by a z-score test recommended by the IAEA. The characteristics of outliers for each detectors are determined by the location of the critical region (a two-sided region and a positive skew). These are 13.0% and 13.5% for AlphaE, and 9.81% for SRDN-3a. For the reference device, these are 15.8% and 10.5%. The z-score test confirm that all the detectors can be successfully used both in commercial and scientific monitoring measurements.

Abstract:Measurement of radon exhalation rate from building materials and quality control of building materials radon exhalation rate measurement are the hot issues in radiation protection field. Looking for a reference method for measuring,and a reasonable value for controlling,building materials radon exhalation rate will greatly facilitate the evaluation and control of indoor radon exposure hazards. This paper carefully discusses the several problems currently existing in measurement of radon exhalation rate from building materials by analyzing theoretically radon exhalation rate and comparing different measurement methods.Results show that after proper pre-treatment of building material samples,the closed chamber method could be recommended for measuring radon exhalation rate from building materials,and also inherent radon exhalation could be used as indicator for quality control of radon exhalation rate measurement for building materials.

Abstract:Soil radon measurement is crucial for environmental safety, public health, and earth science research. Despite significant advancements in the development of radon measurement instruments and methods, there is still a lack of instruments for continuous soil radon monitoring. Therefore, we have developed a continuous radon measurement instrument and designed a corresponding field installation method. This instrument uses a gold-silicon surface barrier semiconductor electrostatic method to measure radon exhalation concentration from the soil and achieves automatic sampling via natural air diffusion. It operates on solar power, is easy to install, and supports both wireless and wired communication. Multiple instruments have been continuously tested in the field for more than a year, showing consistent data among adjacent instruments and the ability to reveal the fluctuation patterns of soil radon. However, practical applications have encountered some challenges, such as data noise and the impact of condensate water on the detector surface.

Abstract:An instrument performance test has been carried out for a radon measuring system made in Hungary. The system measures radon using the alpha-track detection technique. It consists of three parts: the passive detector, the etching unit and the evaluation unit. A CR-39 detector is used as the radiation detector. Alpha-track reading and data analysis are carried out after chemical etching. The following subjects were examined in the present study: (1) radon sensitivity, (2) performance of etching and evaluation processes and (3) thoron sensitivity. The radon sensitivity of 6.9x10(-4) mm(-2) (Bq m(-3) d)(-1) was acceptable for practical application. The thoron sensitivity was estimated to be as low as 3.3x10(-5) mm(-2) (Bq m(-3) d)(-1) from the experimental study.

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. Half of the natural radiation dose to the human body comes from indoor radon and its progeny, inhaling of which plays a key role in the development of lung cancer. Given the relationship between the radon exhalation rate (RnER) and the indoor radon concentration, accurate determination and control of the former directly affect the control and protection of the latter. In this study, a method was developed to estimate the actual RnER of building walls through building material samples. The surface RnER of the wall of any thickness that was constructed of any building material could be calculated by its intrinsic RnER value and radon diffusion length, which could be obtained by measuring the RnER of the pre-treated building material sample models through the activated carbon box-γ spectroscopic method. The experimental results indicated that the deviation between the calculated wall surface RnER of the building and the measured wall surface RnER of the building was <5.1%. Therefore, the intrinsic RnER of building materials could be regarded as an evaluation index for the RnER of buildings.

Abstract:Radon, a radioactive inert gas that comes from the decay of naturally occurring radioactive species, poses a substantial health risk due to its involvement in lung cancer carcinogenesis. This work proposes a metrological approach for determining radon exhalation rates from diverse building materials. This methodology employs an electrostatic collection chamber for alpha spectrometry of radon isotopic decay products. Experimental evaluations were conducted particularly focusing on volcanic gray tuff from Sant'Agata de' Goti (Campania region, Italy), a material commonly utilized in construction, to assess radon exhalation rates. The study aligns with Legislative Decree 101/2020, a transposition of European Directive 59/2013/Euratom, highlighting the need to identify materials with a high risk of radon exhalation. Moreover, this work supports the goals of the Italian National Radon Action Plan related to the aforementioned decree, aiming to develop methodologies for estimating radon exhalation rates from building materials and improving radioprotection practices.

Abstract:Radon is a naturally occurring noble radioactive gas that poses significant health risks, particularly lung cancer, due to its colorless, odorless, and tasteless nature, which makes detection challenging without formal testing. It is found in soil, rock, and water, and it infiltrates indoor environments, necessitating regulatory standards and guidelines from organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization, and the Occupational Health and Safety Agency to mitigate exposure. In this paper, we present various methods and instruments for radon assessment in occupational and environmental settings. Discussion on long- and short-term monitoring, including grab sampling, radon dosimetry, and continuous real-time monitoring, is provided. The comparative analysis of detection techniques—active versus passive—is highlighted from real-time data and long-term exposure assessment, including advances in sensor technology, data processing, and public awareness, to improve radon exposure evaluation techniques.
