Abstract:Accurate measurements of the radon exhalation rate help identify and evaluate radon risk regions in the environment. Among these measurement methods, the closed-loop method is frequently used. However, traditional experiments are insufficient or cannot analyze the radon migration and exhalation patterns at the gas–solid interface in the accumulation chamber. The CFD-based technique was applied to predict the radon concentration distribution in a limited space, allowing radon accumulation and exhalation inside the chamber intuitively and visually. In this study, three radon exhalation rates were defined, and two structural ventilation tubes were designed for the chamber. The consistency of the simulated results with the variation in the radon exhalation rate in a previous experiment or analytical solution was verified. The effects of the vent tube structure and flow rate on the radon uniformity in the chamber; permeability, insertion depth, and flow rate on the radon exhalation rate and the effective diffusion coefficient on back-diffusion were investigated. Based on the results, increasing the insertion depth from 1 to 5 cm decreased the effective decay constant by 19.55%, whereas the curve-fitted radon exhalation rate decreased (lower than the initial value) as the deviation from the initial value increased by approximately 7%. Increasing the effective diffusion coefficient from 2.77 × 10 −7 to 7.77 × 10 −6 m 2 s −1 made the deviation expand from 2.14 to 15.96%. The conclusion is that an increased insertion depth helps reduce leakage in the chamber, subject to notable back-diffusion, and that the closed-loop method is reasonably used for porous media with a low effective diffusion coefficient in view of the back-diffusion effect. The CFD-based simulation is expected to provide guidance for the optimization of the radon exhalation rate measurement method and, thus, the accurate measurement of the radon exhalation rate.

Abstract:Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare disease that is caused by a monoclonal stem cell defect. The affected cells lack the carbohydrate linkage between phophatidylinositol and a group of membrane proteins of which three protect the cell against complement lysis. The absence of these three proteins, DAF (CD55), C8BP and HRF 20 (CD59), makes cells from the erythropoiesis, thrombopoiesis and myelopoiesis extensively sensitive to complement attack and affected patients suffer from intravascular hemolysis, thrombosis and increased susceptibility to infections. In this study we describe a swift and specific assay for the detection of CD55‐ and CD59‐ erythrocytes, which is suitable for screening of possible PNH patients.
Novel approaches for accurately measuring radon exhalation rate and mechanism interpreted by numerical simulation

Abstract:Measurements of radon exhalation rate using traditional methods can be affected by back-diffusion or differential pressure in the accumulation chamber, resulting in deviations between the measured and the true values. To obtain an accurate radon exhalation rate for evaluation of radon-risk regions, two novel approaches of measurements based on traditional methods were proposed. Repeated experiments were implemented on a self-designed stainless cylindrical vessel filled with uranium tailings sand. The measured radon exhalation rates on average were 0.51 ± 0.02 and 0.52 ± 0.02 Bq m −2 s −1 for the two proposed methods, with 0.02% and 0.04%, respectively, deviations from the theoretical value. In addition, numerical techniques were employed to interpret the defects of traditional methods and mechanisms of proposed approaches to measure accurate values. Two novel approaches have significantly reduced the impact of back diffusion and differential pressure inside the chamber and consumed less time.

Abstract:The present case study focuses on indoor radon dispersion in an experimental room made of unfired mud brick by employing CFD modeling, active measurement, and passive measurement in closed and open room conditions. Radon flux for walls and floor surfaces of the room was measured experimentally. A CFD model was designed to simulate spatial distribution pattern of indoor radon. The CFD simulation results are validated through a newly developed RnDuo monitor and single-entry pinhole-based twin-cup dosimeter. The mean indoor radon concentration decreases by approximately one-fourth level in an open room as compared to a closed room.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from rocks, building materials, and soil can be harmful to human health, so it is necessary to measure radon and its exhalation rate. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to simulate radon exhalation from different medium surface by using a solid Rn-222 source, and the radon exhalation rate can be adjusted by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas. Firstly, an experiment was done to determine the activity of the Rn-222 source, and then the theoretical radon exhalation rate can be quickly calculated from the relationship between the radon source activity and the bottom area of the radon accumulation chamber. Three sets of comparative experiments were conducted using two radon accumulation chambers with different volumes, respectively. Comparing the average values obtained from the experiments with the calculated theoretical values, it can be obtained that the differences corresponding to the two radon accumulation chambers between the theoretical radon exhalation rates and the experimentally average values are all within 6%. Without replacing the radon source, the radon exhalation rate is inversely varies with the bottom area of the chamber. Therefore, the correctness of adjusting the radon exhalation rate by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas to simulate radon exhalation from different media surfaces is verified. This method can be used to calibrate the radon exhalation measuring instruments.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from building materials infiltrates the indoor atmosphere and is transported into the indoor space by buoyancy-driven airflow. This paper investigated the dynamic coupling of radon concentration in the building wall area and indoor space. An indoor radon migration model under natural convection caused by temperature gradient was established. The radon exhalation rate, average Nusselt number, and average Sherwood number at the building wall and indoor space interface were quantified. The mechanism of radon migration from building materials into the indoor atmosphere was elucidated. Results show that natural convection influences the flow of indoor air and the radon concentration distribution, which increases with the increase of temperature gradient.

Abstract:The exhalation of radon and thoron from stony and other building materials can be a relevant radiation protection issue if these materials contain high level of their parents, the radionuclides belonging to the uranium and thorium series. However, the simple knowledge of the activity concentrations (Bq/kg) of the natural radionuclides inside these materials is not enough for a comprehensive evaluation of the radiological hazard arising from the use of those materials in the building constructions. Actually, the estimation of the fraction of the radon and thoron produced inside the material that is able to escape from the solid matrix is a crucial parameter that is greatly influenced by the characteristics of the material itself, i.e.: density, porosity, inner composition, etc. In this work, a new method for the determination of the thoron emissions from building materials, calculated from the more easily available radon exhalation data, is proposed. The method is based on the knowledge of the activity concentrations of the radon and thoron parents, namely 226 Ra and 224 Ra and on a new description of the diffusion mechanism inside stony and building material, involving the concept of fractal random walk.

Abstract:The time course of rifampicin and miconazole concentrations after insertion of a polyurethane catheter loaded with these antibiotics were studied. Data from controlled release experiments in vitro were used, and the concentration time courses of the antimicrobials in serum were calculated by pharmacokinetic simulations. Systemic therapy using typical dosages (rifampicin 600 mg/day iv, miconazole 3 x 200 mg/day iv) results in rifampicin concentrations between 54 and 8424 microg/L, and miconazole concentrations between 3567 and 4676 microg/L. After insertion of a polyurethane catheter loaded with these antibiotics, the maximal concentrations after catheter placement were determined as 6 microg/L at 10.7h for rifampicin, and 13 microg/L at 28.6 h for miconazole. Assuming that the total amount of antibiotics incorporated in the catheter matrix were bioavailable ('worst case'), the resulting maximal concentrations calculated by simulation are 10 microg/L for rifampicin and 65 microg/L for miconazole. Maximal concentrations of rifampicin or miconazole resulting from the insertion of a polyurethane catheter loaded with these antibiotics are, therefore, far below the concentrations resulting from a systemic therapy with the same antimicrobial agents. Even in the worst case, the danger of selecting resistant bacterial strains seems remote because the systemic drug levels are magnitudes of order below subinhibitory concentrations.
Radon exhalation from phosphogypsum building boards: symmetry constraints, impermeable boundary conditions and numerical simulation of a test case

Abstract:Comprehensive understanding of (222)Rn exhalation from phosphogypsum-bearing building material and its accumulation in indoor air is likely to rely on numerical simulation, particularly if transient effects, three-dimensional domains and convection are to be included and investigated. Yet, experimental data and analytical results are helpful (if not crucial) as far as validation is concerned. Having in mind computational code simplicity and in the light of a recent experimental and theoretical report on (222)Rn release from phosphogypsum boards for housing panels, this paper presents and discusses an alternative testing set-up and the corresponding boundary conditions, namely one side of the panel bounded by impermeable wall. Although this is a new facility to be tested, the resultant steady-state one-dimensional diffusion-dominant analytical solution is shown to match the counterpart deduced in the aforementioned previous report, despite it relaxes the constraint of symmetry about the phosphogypsum board centerline, which is inferred in that prior experimental scenario. In addition, numerical results are conducted for a diffusion-dominant two-dimensional time-varying test case concerning (222)Rn accumulation in a closed chamber having an exhaling phosphogypsum board tightly placed at one wall.

Abstract:The radioactive noble gas radon is identified as the highest risk factor for lung cancer after smoking. The exhalation of radon from building materials can contribute to the radon indoor activity concentration. Therefore, the emanation of radon might be a crucial factor. It is defined as the release of radon from the solid soil matter into the pore space of the material. This article describes a new on-site measurement method for the emanation of radon from building materials at industrial sites. Therefore, a closed vessel with sample material and a passive radon detector inside is used to measure the integrated build-up-curve of the activity concentration. Additionally, a brief overview on existing radon emanation measurement methods is given.

Effect of ultraviolet light on disease characteristics of NZB/W mice.

Abstract:The development of antinuclear antiboides, proteinuria and cumulative mortality has been studied in four groups of NZB/W mice. Two groups were exposed to different amounts of ultraviolet light [UVL] and one group were bred and raised in total darkness. The fourth group served as a control. No significant difference was noted bwtween the groups in the development of antinuclear antibodies, proteinuria or in cumulative mortality. This study failed to show any major role of UVL as an environmental factor in the development of this disease.

Abstract:Radon, a radioactive inert gas that comes from the decay of naturally occurring radioactive species, poses a substantial health risk due to its involvement in lung cancer carcinogenesis. This work proposes a metrological approach for determining radon exhalation rates from diverse building materials. This methodology employs an electrostatic collection chamber for alpha spectrometry of radon isotopic decay products. Experimental evaluations were conducted particularly focusing on volcanic gray tuff from Sant'Agata de' Goti (Campania region, Italy), a material commonly utilized in construction, to assess radon exhalation rates. The study aligns with Legislative Decree 101/2020, a transposition of European Directive 59/2013/Euratom, highlighting the need to identify materials with a high risk of radon exhalation. Moreover, this work supports the goals of the Italian National Radon Action Plan related to the aforementioned decree, aiming to develop methodologies for estimating radon exhalation rates from building materials and improving radioprotection practices.

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. Half of the natural radiation dose to the human body comes from indoor radon and its progeny, inhaling of which plays a key role in the development of lung cancer. Given the relationship between the radon exhalation rate (RnER) and the indoor radon concentration, accurate determination and control of the former directly affect the control and protection of the latter. In this study, a method was developed to estimate the actual RnER of building walls through building material samples. The surface RnER of the wall of any thickness that was constructed of any building material could be calculated by its intrinsic RnER value and radon diffusion length, which could be obtained by measuring the RnER of the pre-treated building material sample models through the activated carbon box-γ spectroscopic method. The experimental results indicated that the deviation between the calculated wall surface RnER of the building and the measured wall surface RnER of the building was <5.1%. Therefore, the intrinsic RnER of building materials could be regarded as an evaluation index for the RnER of buildings.

Abstract:Geological media are omnipresent in nature. Lab-scale tests are frequently employed in radon exhalation measurements for these media. Thus, it is critical to find the thickness of the medium at an experimental scale that is equivalent to the medium thickness in a real geological system. Based on the diffusion–advection transport of radon, theoretical models of the surface radon exhalation rate for homogeneous semi-infinite and finite-thickness systems were derived (denoted as Jse and Jfi, respectively). Analysis of the equivalency of Jse and Jfi was subsequently carried out by introducing several dimensionless parameters, including the ratio of the exhalation rates for the semi-infinite and finite-thickness models, ε, and the number of diffusion lengths required to achieve a desired ε value, n. The results showed that when radon transport in geological media is dominantly driven by diffusion effect, if n > 3.6626, then ε > 95%; if n > 5.9790, then ε > 99.5%. When radon migration is dominantly driven by advection effect, if n > 2.5002, then ε > 95%; if n > 4.0152, then ε > 99.5%. Therefore, if the thickness of the geological media (x0) is greater than a certain n times the radon diffusion length of the media (L), the media can be modeled as semi-infinite. To validate the model, a pure radon diffusion experiment (no advection) was developed using uranium mill tailings, laterite, and radium-bearing rocklike material with different thicknesses (x0). The theoretical model was demonstrated to be reliable and valid. This study provides a basis for determining the appropriate thickness of geological media in lab-scale radon exhalation measurement experiments with open bottom.

Abstract:Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has the potential to accumulate in buildings and over time, causes lung cancer in humans. Present methods for radon measurements are disparate, which pose challenges to benchmark radon concentrations and to accurately assess the population's received dose. This paper presents a comprehensive performance evaluation of radon dosimeters and three grades of active radon sensors: consumer-, medium- and research-grade. The measurements were performed at relatively low (300 Bq/m 3 ) and high (2′000–3′000 Bq/m 3 ) radon levels. Tests were conducted in an atomic shelter, with stable temperature and humidity conditions. The active sensors differed in absolute accuracy and dynamic performance (time-dependent correlations) according to their grade. Research-grade sensors performed marginally better than medium-grade sensors, and significantly better than consumer-grade sensors. Relative to the reference, the error (percentage difference between the reference and the sensors) was below 5 % for research- and medium-grade sensors, and nearly 10 % for consumer-grade sensors at high radon levels. Performance of sensors diminished at low radon levels, except for research-grade sensors. Passive dosimeters generally performed better at high radon levels than at low ones. Their longer exposure time was associated with increased measurement reliability. These results highlight the need for understanding the purpose of measurements in order to select an adequate radon detector, and ultimately, reduce measurement and interpretation errors. This study raises awareness among researchers, radon professionals and the general public regarding the performances of different active radon sensors and passive dosimeters. It also sheds light on their respective scope of application.

Abstract:The National Institute for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection, under the European project 16ENV10 MetroRADON (the European metrology program for innovation and research, EMPIR), has developed unique equipment for the testing of measuring devices at low-level radon activity concentrations. The equipment consists particularly of an airtight low-level radon chamber (LLRCH) with an inner volume of 324 liters; a Rn-222 type RF 5 flow-through source with a Ra-226 activity of 4.955 kBq developed by Czech Metrological Institute within the above-mentioned project; and a pressure vessel as a radon-free air source. The mass flow controller of the Bronkhorst EL-Flow type is a part of the apparatus and ensures the requested airflow through the radon source—partialized if necessary—through the chamber. The homogeneity of the atmosphere in the chamber is ensured by means of a continuously regulated fan (airflows in the range of 0.1–3.5 m·s−1 can be established). Another important chamber component is the measuring device of climatic conditions, since temperature, air pressure, and relative humidity must be determined. The construction of the equipment allows the time-stable radon activity concentration to be maintained at a precise level for several days. Radon concentration values can be arbitrarily and continuously set in the range from 100 Bq·m−3 to 300 Bq·m−3.

Abstract:Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may improve the outcome of esophageal cancer after esophagectomy, but is accompanied by considerable toxicity by collateral destruction of normal cells. Such side effects may be avoided by developing therapies that specifically target molecular characteristics of tumors. The aim of the present study was to determine the proportion of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients that could possibly benefit from (a combination of) currently available targeted therapies, by assessing the frequency of immunohistochemical expression of their target molecular markers in ESCC tissues. Sections from a validated tissue microarray comprising 108 ESCCs were immunohistochemically stained for Bcl-2, c-KIT, cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2), cyclin D1, estrogen receptor (ER), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Her-2/neu, progesterone receptor (PR), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF, cyclin D1, EGFR, and COX-2 could be detected in 55, 42, 40, and 40%, respectively. Her-2/neu, Bcl-2, and c-KIT were detected in 12, 11, and 10% of the tumors, respectively. No nuclear expression of ER or PR was noticed. Concurrent expression of two markers was noticed in 28% of ESCCs, whereas 25% of ESCCs showed concurrent expression of three markers. The concurrent expression of two of the most frequently expressed markers (VEGF, cyclin D1, EGFR, and COX-2) ranged from 11 (COX-2 and EGFR) to 26% (cyclin D1 and VEGF). The expression of all of these four markers was seen in 5% of ESCCs. Promising targets for molecular therapy in ESCC appear to be COX-2, VEGF, EGFR, and cyclin D1, as they are frequently overexpressed. Phase II clinical studies on these molecular markers may therefore be warranted. The role for targeted therapy against ER, PR, Her-2/neu, c-KIT, or Bcl-2 in ESCC seems limited.
Inhibitory effect of epigallocatechin-gallate on brain tumor cell lines in vitro.

Abstract:We investigated the effect of epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG), the main constituent of green tea polyphenols, on human glioblastoma cell lines U-373 MG and U-87 MG, rat glioma cell line C6, and rat nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma cell line MtT/E. Cell viability was determined by assay with 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), and the extent of apoptosis was studied by flow cytometric analysis. Apoptosis was also characterized by morphology using fluorescent microscopy. The role of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) was studied by assay with MTT, immunohistochemistry, and immunoradiometric assay. After 72-h exposure, a statistically significant loss of viability (P = < 0.0001) was observed at concentrations of 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 microg/ml in U-373 MG cells and U-87 MG cells. EGCG at concentrations of 50 microg/ml and higher significantly reduced the viability of C6 cells. EGCG inhibited viability of MtT/E cells only at a concentration of 100 microg/ml. Quantitative study by flow cytometry demonstrated that lower doses of EGCG (12.5, 25, 50 microg/ml) induced apoptosis in U-373 MG, U-87 MG, and C6 cells; however, only the highest dose (100 microg/ml) induced apoptosis in MtT/E cells. Compared with other cell lines, MtT/E cells showed stronger IGF-I immunoreactivity. Neutralization of IGF-I with an antihuman IGF-I antibody reduced viability of the cell lines. It can be concluded that EGCG has an inhibitory effect on malignant brain tumors, and IGF-I may be involved in the effects of EGCG.
Design and Experimental Application of a Radon Diffusion Chamber for Determining Diffusion Coefficients in Membrane Materials

Abstract:In recent years, the issue of radon emanation and diffusion has become a critical concern for rare decay experiments, such as JUNO and PandaX-4T. This paper introduces a detector design featuring a symmetric radon detector cavity for the quantitative assessment of membrane materials' radon blocking capabilities. The performance of this design is evaluated through the application of Fick's Law and the diffusion equation considering material solubility. Our detector has completed measurements of radon diffusion coefficients for four types of membrane materials currently used in experiments, which also confirms the rationality of this detector design. The findings are instrumental in guiding the selection and evaluation of optimal materials for radon shielding to reduce radon background, contributing to boost sensitivities of rare event research.

Comparison of Radon Mass Exhalation Rate Measurements from Building Materials by two Different Methods

Abstract:The aim of this study is to measure the radon mass exhalation rate from common granite building materials used in the East and Northeast part of Portugal. Twelve cubic shaped samples were measured. Nine of them without any coating and three coated with different materials (varnish,hydrorepellent and liquid silicone). The radon measurements were performed with two different techniques: one using passive detectors and other using an active detector. For the passive method CR-39 solid state nuclear track detectors were used. The active method used the RAD7 DURRIDGE detector. Radon mass exhalation rates obtained from both methods present relatively low values in the 11 to 45 mBq/kg/h range for the analyzed samples. Concerning the coated samples, the measured values are on average four times lower than the ones without coating. Overall, the measured values for both methods present a good agreement.
