Abstract:Using an electrospinning technique coupled with a thermal treatment approach, ZnS nanofibers have been prepared by sulfurizing the electrospun ZnO nanofibers (as a template) at 500°C in an H2S atmosphere. The ZnS nanofibers, with a zinc‐blende structure, were found to be rough and uneven, which was considered to be correlated with the processing conditions. Band gap characteristic peaks mainly centered at 390 and 445 nm have been observed, corresponding to the purple and blue emission, respectively. The method demonstrated here could be a general approach of fabricating other one‐dimensional‐nanostructured sulfides for potential applications in nanoscale devices.

Abstract:Mass production of ZnO nanowires, nanoribbons, and needle-like rods has been achieved by a simple method of thermal evaporation of ZnO powders mixed with graphite. Metallic catalysts, carrying gases, and vacuum conditions are not necessary. Temperature is the critical experimental parameter for the formation of different morphologies of ZnO nanostructures. Zn or Zn suboxide plays a crucial role for the nucleation of ZnO nanostructures. The as-prepared ZnO nanowires consist of single crystalline cores and thin amorphous shells. As determined by electron diffraction, the growth direction of ZnO nanowires is [001], which has no orientation relationship with the substrate. A strong room-temperature photoluminescence in ZnO nanostructures has been demonstrated.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:Tube brush-like ZnO nanostructures were synthesized by a simple chemical vapor deposition method with Zn and ZnO as precursors. These special ZnO nanostructures were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope and Cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques. Empty backbones or comb ribbons backbones were found inside the tube brush-like ZnO structures and fuzzy ZnO nanowires outside. Outside ZnO nanowires grow along the c axis and show green CL emission. The growth mechanism of the hierarchical ZnO nanostructures was investigated by a series of experiments at different growth temperatures and different duration times, and a secondary growth mechanism has been proposed and discussed.

Abstract:An atmospheric‐pressure plasma system is developed and is used to treat carbon nanotube assemblies, producing a hybrid carbon‐zinc structure. This system is integrated into a floating‐catalyst chemical vapor deposition furnace used for the synthesis of macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanotubes to allow for the in‐line, continuous, and single‐step production of nano‐composite materials. Material is deposited from a sacrificial zinc wire in the form of nanoparticles and can coat the surface of the individual carbon nanotubes as they form. Additionally, it is found that the deposited materials penetrate further into the carbon nanotube matrix than a comparable post‐synthesis deposition, improving the uniformity of the material through the thickness. Thus, a single‐step metal‐based coating and carbon nanotube synthesis process which can form the basis of production scale manufacturing of metal‐carbon nanotube composite materials with an atmospheric‐pressure plasma system are demonstrated.

Abstract:Silicon nano-wires (SiNWs) with diameter of ∼30nm and length of tens of micrometers on silicon wafers were synthesized by a novel thermal evaporation of zinc sulfide. After thermal evaporation at 1080°C for 1h, crystalline SiNWs were produced. It was found that the tip of SiNWs contained sulfur, while the other places of SiNWs did not. It is considered that the decomposition of SiS resulted in the formation of SiNWs. On the basis of the facts, a sulfide-assisted growth model of SiNWs was suggested.

Abstract:By a simple method, that is, by heating raw materials in a flowing gas at ambient pressure, Si3N4, Ga2O3, and ZnO nanowires, SiC nanocables, and SiO2 amorphous nanowires are synthesized without metal catalysts. The diameters of these one-dimensional nanoscale materials are greatly affected by synthesis temperatures. At suitable synthesis temperatures, their diameters are <100 nm. The growth mechanisms of these nanowires are discussed preliminarily.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures with peculiar morphology were synthesized in large quantities via catalyst-free thermal evaporation. Both ZnO nanopushpins with very thin and flat cap on top of the nanorods, and regular hexagonal nanotubes, can be obtained in the same run of growth in different regions. The ZnO nanopushpins and nanotubes were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Cathodoluminescence measurements revealed that the emission from oxygen vacancy overwhelmed that of the near band gap in the as-grown ZnO nanotube arrays. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Cu-catalyzed ZnO nanowires have been synthesized by thermal evaporation of Cu-Zn powder alloys in a water vapor atmosphere. The diameters of the nanowires can be controlled by the amount of water vapor introduced into in the reaction tube. Raman spectroscopic characterization reveals two additional modes at 621 and 671cm(-1) which are indicative of the existence of host-lattice defects caused by Cu doping or other intrinsic lattice defects that formed during the nanowire growth. Field emission and photoluminescence (PL) properties of Cu-catalyzed ZnO nanowires have also been investigated using nanowires with a diameter of 20 nm and 200 nm. The field emission results show that the thinner nanowires have a lower turn-on electrical field than the thicker ones, whilst both nanowires exhibit a similar field emission enhancement factor in the high electric field region. In the PL spectra, we have observed a blue-shift of the UV emission peak and a red-shift of the green emission peak when the nanowire diameters decreased from 200 nm to 20 nm.
A Simple and Novel Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Synthesis of ZnO Nanorods

Abstract:A new simple low-temperature hydrothermal process without addition of any surfactant or complexing agent was put forward to synthesize uniform ZnO nanorods, in which hydrazine hydrate instead of NaOH was used as mineralizer. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to characterize the product, the results of which reveal that uniform ZnO nanorods approximately 70 nm in width and 2 μm in length were formed at 150°C within 8 h. Prior to the hydrothermal process hydrazine hydrate reacted with ZnCl2 solution to form a complex, and the complex slowly decomposed in the hydrothermal process. All these characteristics were favorable to this additive-free hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanorods.

Abstract:A sol-gel process and a nanochannel aluminium template were employed to fabricate an orderly array of ZnO nanowires. The ZnO nanowires, with a hexagonal structure, were identified by means of x-ray diffraction and selected-area electron diffraction. The arrays of ZnO nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the diameters of the ZnO nanowires are very uniform, at about 60 nm. Furthermore, high-resolution TEM provides lattice images of {100}, {002} and {101} planes in the nanowires, indicating that the nanowires are well crystallized.

Abstract:Ultra-thin fibers of zinc oxide (ZnO) were prepared by sol-gel processing and the electrospinning technique using poly(vinyl acetate) and zinc acetate as precursors. The fibers were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transfer infrared, and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The results showed that the diameter of the precursor fibers increased with increasing zinc acetate content, and the size of the inorganic ZnO nanofibers decreased obviously as the calcining time increased.

Abstract:Single-crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires were synthesized from zinc powder and H2O through a simple chemical route at 730 °C in Ar atmosphere. The potential exists for bulk synthesis of ZnO nanowires at temperatures significantly less than the 200–300 °C of thermal evaporation methods reported formerly. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that the ZnO nanowires are structurally uniform, have lengths up to several hundreds of micrometers and diameters of about 40–60 nm and crystallize in a hexagonal structure. The growth of ZnO nanowires is controlled by the vapor–solid crystal-growth mechanism. Photoluminescence measurements show that the ZnO nanowires have a strong near-band ultraviolet emission at 380 nm and a green light emission at 520 nm caused by oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:High quality ZnO nanowires were synthesized at high temperature without using heterogenous catalysts. The nanowires had a uniform prismatic shape and were grown in a cacti-like morphology. Characterizations of the products by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the ZnO nanowires were single crystalline and of high purity. An intensive exciton emission was observed around 3.25 eV from the ZnO nanowires at room temperature. The growth mechanism was discussed based on the experimental conditions and the ZnO crystal growth habits. This growth method can be used to prepare other metal oxide nanowires.

Abstract:Single-crystalline Zn2SnO4 (ZTO) nanowires have been successfully synthesized using a simple thermal evaporation method by heating Zn and Sri powders directly without catalysts under a temperature lower than 800 degrees C. The synthesized ZTO nanowires are ribbon-like, and have an average width of 100-200 nm and thickness of 50 nm. These nanowires are ultra-long, up to 0.5-1 mm. Further analyses indicate that the synthesized products are ZTO nanowires with a fairly high purity. These nanowires are highly single crystalline in the face-centred-cubic spinel structure, and grow along the [1 (1) over bar1] direction. It is believed that the growth process of the nanowires follows a vapour-solid mechanism. Photoluminescence properties of the nanowires were measured, showing two green peaks at 529 and 544 nm and two yellow-orange emission peaks at 572 and 613 nm, which have not been reported before, besides the known blue-green peak (485 nm).

Abstract:Two kinds of ZnO nanowires with different morphologies and characters were produced on Si (100) using a new PVD approach by heating and oxidizing Zn powders directly without any catalysts. The nanowires have an average diameter of 80nm (deposited at the evaporation source) and 30nm (deposited downstream of the evaporation source) respectively, and are evenly distributed over an area of > 20mm2. The two nanowires have complete different photoluminescence properties. One has a strong green emission (510nm) with a weak UV emission (380nm). The other has a strong and sharp UV emission (385nm), showing the capability for UV laser emitters.

Abstract:Semiconductor ZnTe nanowire arrays have been synthesized by the pulsed electrochemical deposition from aqueous solutions into porous anodic alumina membranes. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the as-synthesized nanowires have a highly preferential orientation. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy indicate that high-filling, ordered, and single-crystalline nanowire arrays have been obtained. The optical absorption spectra of the nanowire arrays show that the optical absorption band edge of the ZnTe nanowire array exhibits a blue shift compared with that of bulk ZnTe. The growth mechanism and the electrochemical deposition process are discussed together with the chemical compositions analysis.

Abstract:The filling of carbon nanotubes with zinc oxide via wet chemical techniques is presented. Crystalline zinc oxide was introduced into carbon nanotubes by immersing empty and dried opened tubes in zinc nitrate solution followed by filteration and calcination, which was characterized by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After burning off the carbon nanotubes at 750°C in air for 2h, crystalline zinc oxide nanorods, with diameters in the range of ca. 20–40nm and length of up to 1μm, were formed, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM and HRTEM. XRD indicated that the nanorods were hexagonal ZnO.

Abstract:We introduce a solution-based electrodeposition technique that selectively deposits copper only at the contacts between nanowires/nanobelts/nanotubes and the electrodes, while leaving the device surfaces clean. This was achieved using a copper nitrate bath with low covering power. Our method demonstrates an effective, parallel process for achieving stable electric and mechanical contacts for one-dimensional nanomaterial-based devices on a large scale.
