Abstract:By testing the compressive strength, tensile strength, permeability coefficient, carbonization depth and relative dynamic elastic modulus, the influence of fly ash and polycarboxylic acid superplasticizer on the performance of recycled concrete was studied. The mechanism of action of fly ash and polycarboxylic acid superplasticizer on concrete properties was also analyzed by SEM. The results indicate that the compressive strength, tensile strength, permeability coefficient relative and dynamic elastic modulus of recycled concrete are increased by 7.1%, 8.3%, 81.0% and 16.7% respectively, the carbonization depth decreased by 34.4%, when the cementitious materials is replaced by 20% (by mass) of fly ash and 1.2% (by mass) of polycarboxylic acid superplasticizer. Therefore, fly ash and polycarboxylic acid superplasticizer can effectively promote the hydration of cement particles and improve the pore structure of concrete along with the bond between cement paste and recycled aggregate in the interface transition zone, which is suitable for the preparation of high performance recycled concrete.

Abstract:The chemical and geotechnical properties of solidified/stabilized (s/s) municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash are of prime importance for the design and operation of landfill sites. This study conducted field and laboratory tests to investigate aging effects on the chemical and geotechnical properties of s/s MSWI fly ash. Field investigations included borehole sampling and cone penetration tests (CPTs), and laboratory analyses included the measurement of the chemical, physical, hydrological, and mechanical properties of s/s fly ash with different fill ages. The results showed that: 1) Cl concentrations in landfill leachate were as high as 52,700 mg.L-1, which may present a technical challenge for leachate treatment; 2) specific gravity decreased with fill age, which was attributed to the leaching of metal elements from the s/s fly ash; 3) mean particle size decreased with fill age, resulting in an increase in the gravimetric moisture retention capacity (MRC) and a decrease in the saturated hydraulic conductivity; 4) gravimetric MRC was much higher than the initial moisture content, suggesting water absorption by s/s fly ash after landfilling; and 5) shear strength decreased with fill age, which was consistent with the CPTs results. To improve the design and operation of s/s MSWI fly ash landfill sites, the following suggestions are made: 1) the use of concentrated MSW landfill leachate in the s/s fly ash process should be avoided to reduce the concentrations of subsequent landfill leachate; 2) leachate generation could be further reduced by improving landfill operation practices and by taking advantage of the absorption capacity of s/s fly ash; and 3) the specific geotechnical parameters of s/s fly ash should be obtained prior to the design of landfill sites, and their aging effects should also be taken into consideration.

Abstract:China has ranked first in the coal fly ash emission in the world. The multipurpose use of the fly ash from power plant waste is always an important topic for the Chinese environmental protection, which has drawn the concern of the government, scientific research departments, manufacturing enterprises and industry experts. This paper introduces an experimental research on how to recycle fly ash effectively, a kind of new technology of making bricks by which fly ash content could be amounted to 50–80 %. The article introduces raw materials of fly ash brick, production process and key control points. It introduces how to change the technical parameters of the existing brick-making mechanical device, optimize the parameters combination and improve the device performance. High-content fly ash bricks are manufactured, which selects wet fly ash from power plants, adding aggregate with reasonable ratio and additives with reasonable dosage, and do the experimental research on manufactured products for properties, production technology and selection about technology parameters of production equipment. All indexes of strength grade, freezing-thawing resisting, and other standards of the studied bricks reached the national standards for building materials industry.

Abstract:Fly ash, a byproduct of coal-fired thermal power stations, is among the most intricate artificially produced substances. The challenge of its suitable disposal has emerged as both an ecological issue and a squandering of potentially resources. Fly ash has good pozzolanic activity and contains reactive Al and Si components, it has the potential to dissolve under alkaline conditions to form a dense green gel, i.e. alkali activated binder. But, the widespread implementation of fly ash from different sources in generation of products is constrained by the heterogeneity of raw-material supply. In this work, physical performances, chemical-compositions, microstructures, element distribution, crystal structure, chemical-bonds, glassy content, as well as existence form of glassy-phases of eleven fly ashes sourced from different province in China were investigated via FESEM-EDS, XPS, XRD-Rietveld, FTIR, TEM NMR analysis. Then, a reactivity index of fly ash (R value) that concerned the effects of both initial state, particle morphology, internal composition was proposed. R value has been demonstrated to exhibit high predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.81–0.93) for predicting the strengths development of alkali activated products prepared with different activator modules, especially at early period. A further eleven literature datasets were utilized to validated against the accuracy of the predictions. R value facilitates an effective evaluation of fly ashes' fitness for fabricating high-strength alkali activated composites.

Abstract:It studies the contribution of water to binder ratio,lithium slag dosage,fly ash dosage and lithium slag fineness to the early-age plastic shrinkage and cracking of high performance concrete added with lithium slag and fly ash.The experiment demonstrates the water to binder ratio has the most influence among the three factors,and the lithium slag dosage has the least.The cracking resistance at early ages of high performance concrete added with lithium slag and fly ash is better than that of common cement concrete in the same condition.To some extent,the increase of lithium slag fineness can improve the cracking resistance at early ages of high performance concrete.

Abstract:<p>Quartz and clay are substituted gradually by fly ash using a triaxial ceramic formulation under simulated industrial conditions and the effects of fly ash substitution on the macroscopic properties and microstructures of the sintered ceramics are evaluated systematically. With the substitution of 35 wt% (1250 °C), the ceramic sample exhibited optimal properties, including linear shrinkage of 15.61%, bulk density of 2.39 g cm<sup>-3</sup>, water absorption of 0.62% and flexural strength of 41.70 MPa, due to the accelerated densification and fly ash-spurred needle-shaped mullite. The microstructure analysis shows that the sintered matrix consists of three types of particles, quartz-, clay- and feldspar-like particles showing sintering behavior with respect to filling the glassy matrix with preserved morphology, precipitating mullite crystals, and fusing with the surrounding glassy matrix, respectively. The strength of the fly ash - containing ceramics is analyzed by the dispersion-strengthening mechanism and porosity and the results indicate that the fly ash particles affect the mechanical strength due to Griffith flaws when the total porosity is less than 25% and pores at higher total porosity. This study provides a viable strategy to recycle industrial fly ash in the production of architectural ceramics.</p>

Shrinkage and Durability of Waste Brick and Recycled Concrete Aggregate Stabilized by Cement and Fly Ash

Abstract:To study the shrinkage and freeze-thaw durability of cement-fly-ash-stabilized brick and concrete reclaimed gravel mixture (CFRBCA), recycled gravel was used to replace 100% of the natural gravel in cement-and-fly-ash-stabilized gravel (CFRCA). Five different mixture ratios of recycled brick and recycled concrete were designed. Dry shrinkage tests, temperature shrinkage tests, freeze-thaw cycle tests, ultrasonic tests, and microscopic analyses were then conducted. The test results showed that the water loss rate, dry shrinkage strain, and dry shrinkage coefficient of CFRBCA increased as the age and brick content increased and tended to be stable by approximately the 40th day of age. The reclaimed gravel content had a great influence on the temperature shrinkage of CFRBCA: the temperature shrinkage coefficient first increased and then decreased as the temperature decreased and reached a peak at -10 to 0 °C. The microstructure analysis showed that as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases, cracks appear and extend in the CFRBCA, hydration products gradually change from dense to loose, and the Ca/Si ratio increases. Through these experiments, the logarithmic relationship model between ultrasonic wave velocity and CFRBCA strength damage, which can better predict the strength loss caused by CFRBCA variation with freeze-thaw cycles, was established. The brick content is the key parameter affecting the durability of the freeze-thawed CFRBCA, and thus the brick slag content should be properly controlled in engineering applications.

Abstract:The improving influence of fine fly ash on the properties of low-quality cement is investigated.The results show that concrete which meets the design requirement can be easily produced by complex binder material of low-quality cement and fine fly ash.The concrete produced by complex binder material can meet the design compressive strength,and it also has higher splitting tensile strength and higher density.Meanwhile,the late-age performance of concrete produced by complex binder material is significantly improved.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation on the compressive strength and shrinkage (drying shrinkage and plastic shrinkage) property of concrete specimens with fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast‐furnace slag (GGBS), and moreover, the content level and curing age were considered in this experiment. The results show that the addition of FA and GGBS has a significant effect on the compressive strength and shrinkage properties of concrete. It indicated that the compressive strength of specimens decreases gradually due to the reduction of cement hydration products, when the curing age is less than 14 days. Nevertheless, once the curing time exceeds 7 days, the compressive strength increases initially and then decreases. Similarly, the compressive strength of concrete with GGBS increases slightly at first and then decreases, when the content level exceeds the critical value. The variety rule of plastic shrinkage cracks with FA and GGBS is similar to that of compressive strength; however, the variety rule of drying shrinkage strain is contrary to the above experimental results. Furthermore, in the early stage of curing, the GGBS is the main factor on improving strength and drying shrinkage properties, though for the later stage, the FA becomes the main factor instead of GGBS.

Abstract:The microstructure and the mechanical properties of hardened mortars made of superplasticized composite binder containing shale ash and fly ash are investigated. The pozzolanic reaction consumes the oriented Ca (OH)(2) crystals, thus making the transition zone dense. Appropriately proportioning of shale ash and fly ash decreases the water requirement and increases the packing density of composite binder mortars, therefore increases their strength. Super plasticizer promotes the carbonation of calcium hydrates and the formation of ettringite that is transformed gradually into mono-sulfoaluminate hydrate in composite binder mortars. The joint action of Sine complex mineral admixture and superplasticizer has a synergistic effect to improve the mechanical properties of composite binder.

Abstract:The effects of aging should be considered for reliable long-term assessments of the environmental risks of the use of refuse-derived-fuel (RDF) fly ash as landfill top cover liner material. Mineral transformations that occur in RDF fly ash, and the effects of selected factors on these transformations, were studied on compacted fly ash specimens in an accelerated aging experiment using a reduced factorial design. Carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, relative air humidity, time, and the quality of added water were varied in six factor combinations. Acid neutralization capacity and leaching behavior were analyzed after four different periods of time. The results were evaluated with multivariate data analysis. A significant change in the acid neutralization capacity, a decrease in leaching of Ba, Ca, Cl−, Cr, Cu, Pb, K, and Na, and an increase in solubility of Mg, Si, Zn, and SO42− could be attributed to different aging conditions.

Abstract:The production methods of artificial aggregate (AA) and plastic-coated AA are explored. Fly ash (FA), sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, and water were used as raw materials for geopolymerization. The geopolymerization characteristics and granulation efficiency were analyzed. The physical, mechanical, and durability properties of the AA were evaluated. The enhancement mechanism of plastic coating on AA was discussed. The mechanical and thermal properties of the concretes were assessed. Results showed that the geopolymerization is not a crystallization process, and the granulated AA would deteriorate during the soak-dry cycles. Furthermore, coating AA with plastic could enhance the AA and protect it from water damage, and plastic with different strengths and ductility would have different strengthening modes. Lastly, the plastic-coated AA concrete showed a better performance than AA concrete and better thermal insulation than ordinary concrete. And the cost and benefit analysis indicated that plastic-coated AA was a promising building material in the future for carbon neutrality.
Fabrication of Lead–Zinc Tailings Sintered Brick and Its Effect Factors Based on an Orthogonal Experiment

Abstract:The existence of lead-zinc tailings threatens the social and ecological environment. The recycling of lead–zinc tailings is important for the all-round green transformation of economic society. In this study, the possibility of fabricating sintered ordinary bricks with lead–zinc tailings was studied based on orthogonal experimentation, and the phase composition and micromorphology of sintered products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). With lead–zinc tailings as the main material, and clay and fly ash as additives, the effect of clay content, forming pressure, sintering temperature, and holding time on physical properties of sintered bricks was analyzed. The results show that clay content and sintering temperature have a major effect on compressive strength, while sintering temperature and holding time play an important role in water absorption. During sintering, mica, chlorite, and other components in lead–zinc tailings are decomposed to form albite, hematite, maghemite, and anhydrite, which play a role in the strength of bricks. The optimal process parameters were found to be a ratio of lead–zinc tailings:clay:fly ash = 6:3:1, forming pressure of 20 MPa, firing temperature of 1080 °C, and holding time of 60 min. The corresponding compressive strength and water absorption were 34.94 MPa and 16.02%, which meets the Chinese sintered ordinary bricks standard (GB/T 5101-2017).

Abstract:Alkali-activated materials (AAM) are widely applied in the field of building materials and civil engineering to substitute cement materials. This study used two types of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA): grate-firing fly ash (GFFA) and fluidized bed fly ash (FBFA) as brick raw materials. Various weight ratio of 20%, 30%, and 40% GFFA and FBFA were added to coal fly ash (CFA), GGBFs (Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag), and an alkali-activating reagent to produce alkali-activated bricks. Microstructure and crystalline phase composition were observed to analyze their compressive strength, and a leaching test was used to prove the material's safety for the environment. It can be seen from the results of this study that the alkali-activated bricks containing FBFA had higher compressive strength than those containing GFFA in the same amount. Considering the engineering properties, the alkali-activated bricks containing FBFA are more suitable to be used as building materials. The difference in the compressive strength resulted from the large amount of calcium compounds and chloride salts present in the GFFA. From SEM analysis, it was observed that there was a large number of pores in the microstructure. It was also found from the results of XRD that the bricks containing GFFA contained a large amount of chloride salt. From the results of the two leaching tests, it was found that the amounts of six heavy metals detected in the leachates of the bricks in this study met the corresponding regulation standards. This described MSWI-FA is suitable for use as alkali-activated material, and its products have potential to be commercially used in the future.
