Abstract:Through controlling the rotation angle of the test container,a curve about the rotation angle and the fall mass ratio of materials from the container was obtained,which was defined as flow curve.Experiments were performed to study the effect of the moisture content and pressure on the fluidity of raw coal.The results show that the surface moisture content of raw coal plays a dominant role in its fluidity,and the fluidity shows a depravation with the increase of the surface moisture content.Coal blockage occurs easily when the surface moisture content was above 8%.The effect of the pressure exerted on the surface of the raw coal is dependent on the moisture content.The pressure can not worsen the fluidity of the flat surface of the raw coal until the surface moisture content reaches 13%,this phenomenon is due to the silo effect.

Abstract:China produces large amounts of sewage sludge and agricultural waste every year. In line with the concepts of economic and environmental sustainability, the disposal of these wastes has become increasingly urgent. This paper proposes a feasible way to use river sediments, sewage sludge, and wheat straw as raw materials for sintered shale bricks. The critical processes of best humidity conditions, molding pressure, and sintering temperature were studied and analyzed to determine the optimal production parameters. Moreover, the physical and mechanical properties were investigated to assess their suitability as a partial replacement for the shale in fired-shale bricks. The results showed that moist mixtures with the maximum dry density, the molding pressure of 2 MPa, and a sintering temperature of 1050 °C were the optional condition to sinter high-quality bricks. Overall, the mechanical strength of bricks tended to slightly decrease with the 10–30% substitution of shale by river sediments, which showed a sharp fall with the 1–3% incorporation of sewage sludge and wheat straw, implying that massive organic matters could enhance the porosity of bricks during the sintering process. The bulk density, thermal conductivity coefficient, and drying shrinkage tended to decrease, whereas water absorption increased as three raw materials increased. Additionally, the sewage sludge and wheat straw have a positive inhibiting effect on the sintering shrinkage due to the expansion burned from massive organic matter. At the replacement level of 10–30% river sediments, 1–2% sewage sludge, and 1% wheat straw, bricks with the characteristics of low thermal conductivity, lightweight, and high strength were successfully manufactured according to the Chinese Standards.

Abstract:Aluminum dross is produced in the process of industrial production and regeneration of aluminum. Currently, the main way to deal with aluminum dross is stacking and landfilling, which aggravates environmental pollution and resource waste. In order to find a green and environmental protection method for the comprehensive utilization, the aluminum dross was used as raw materials to prepare sintered brick. Firstly, the raw material ratio, molding pressure and sintering process were determined by single factor test and orthogonal test, and the mechanism of obvious change of mechanical strength of sintered brick was studied by XRD and SEM. The experimental results show that, the optimal formula of sintered brick is 50% aluminum dross, 37.50% engineering soil and 12.50% coal gangue. The optimum process parameters are molding pressure 10 MPa, heating rate 8 °C/ min, sintering temperature 800 °C, holding time 60 min. The samples prepared under the above formula and process parameters present outstanding performance, and the compressive strength, flexural strength and water absorption rate are 16.21 MPa, 3.42 MPa and 17.12% respectively.

Abstract:A high-performance quartz sand insulation brick was prepared by using low grade quartz sand under different sintering process conditions. The optimum sintering process conditions were obtained by analyzing the relationship between microstructure and sintering process. Through the compounding, pulping, forming, drying and sintering processes, and the performance test of the porous brick, the following conclusions can be drawn, the comprehensive performance in all aspects, the porosity is similar, the preferred high compressive strength conditions, in order to get a best The bonding point, brick body sintering temperature of 1150 °C, porosity of 74.56%, compressive strength of 2.1 MPa of porous brick, and the pores are smooth, more uniform distribution. With the prolonging of the holding time, the porosity of the porous brick is reduced, and the performance is 1h, the porosity is 77.22% and the compressive strength is 2.05 MPa. When the raw material ratio is 60% quartz sand, 30wt% kaolin, calcium carbonate 9.6wt%, foaming agent 0.4wt%, water ratio 0.9 holding time at 1h sintering at 1150°C can get better porosity and compressive strength of the insulation brick. The porous material was sintered at 1150 °C, the content of foaming agent was 0.2wt%, the ratio of water to material was 0.9, and the compressive pressure and porosity were the better.

Abstract:Iron ore tailings and coal gangue powder are the main sources of industrial solid wastes, the dispose of which has become severe and urgent with the increasing demand of environmental harmony. The present study firstly proposed a reasonable way to deal with the large amount of iron ore tailings and coal gangue powder by making them as the sintered bricks with sewage sludge and shale as the binder, considering the advantages in both economic and environmental aspects. The bulk density, sintering shrinkage, water absorption and compressive strength of the composite sintered bricks were tested to determine the optimum preparation conditions, including sludge content, molding pressure, sintering temperature and holding time. The aforementioned characteristics as well as the leaching toxicity of composite sintered bricks produced under the optimum conditions were all met the requirement of Chinese standard of bearing-brick. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) were applied to reveal the phase transition of components during the sintering process. It was found that most of the mass and energy changes were caused by the phase transition of organic matter and water. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) found that the section of unburned brick has discrete particles with disordered size and arrangement. During the sintering process, the newly generated crystal-like mineral particles significantly increased, and the molten glass phase also appeared to wrap and cement these tiny crystal-like particles, resulted into the increasing compressive strength of sintered brick.

Abstract:Experimental study on the slagging characteristics of Yulin & Pingshuo blended coals was carried out in a drop tube furnace.The slagging indexes were determined at different temperatures and the quantitative analysis on the composition of mineral matters in the ash slag was made using X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD).The results indicated that four crystalline minerals-iron oxide,anorthite,mullite,silica,and another amorphous glass are mainly consisted of the ash slag and the first three have a significant effect on the slagging tendency of coals.Higher content of iron oxide in the ash and anorthite in the ash slag,together with lower content of mullite in the ash slag leads to greater slagging tendency.According to this,using coal blending to obtain lower iron oxide content,and to decrease and increase the formation quantity of anorthite and mullite respectively,the slagging tendency of Shenmu type coal could be inhibited at a lower level.

Abstract:The porous brick as a substitute of solid clay brick can increase the thermoresistance of walling and enhance the heat-insulating property of building envelope.Using coal gangue as the material of porous brick,a lot of scrap of the coal mines can be consumed and the intensity of the porous brick can be enhanced.The effect of the coal gangue porous brick on the production energy consumption,construction energy consumption and building energy consumption is analyzed.The coal gangue porous brick has a remarkable energy-saving result.

Using water-based drilling cuttings from shale gas development to manufacture sintered bricks: a case study in the southern Sichuan Basin, China

Abstract:Large amounts of water-based drilling cuttings (WDC) would be generated during the drilling of shale gas wells, which would occupy land resources and pose significant threat to soil and groundwater environment. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of using WDC as a replacement of natural clay to prepare sintered bricks. To determine the optimum preparation condition, the weight loss on ignition, bulk density, water absorption, and compressive strength of the samples were tested. Meanwhile, the environmental performance of the final products was evaluated and micro-analysis was conducted via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that using WDC to manufacture sintered bricks was technically feasible, but the physical mechanical performance would significantly decrease with the increase of the replacement ratio because of the presence of less silica and excessive calcium. The addition of waste glass and fly ash could promote the generation of molten glassy phase and form the crystal particle bonding structure, which would contribute to the physical-mechanical performance of WDC sintered bricks. Some mineral components in raw materials decomposed and formed minerals with better thermal stability during the sintering process. Under the optimum preparation conditions (mass ratio of WDC: waste glass: fly ash at 40:20:40, sintering temperature at 900 °C, and insulation time at 2 h), the physical-mechanical and environmental performance of WDC sintered bricks could meet the requirements of corresponding Chinese standards and ASTM standards. Thus, in this study, an effective solution to recycle WDC from shale gas development is provided.

Abstract:This paper studies the proportion of raw materials and process system for firing shale slag ceramsite. The raw materials and raw material ratio of the shale slag ceramsite were determined by the composition analysis of the shale slag; Through basic experiments, it is concluded that when the proportion of raw materials is shale slag: coal gangue: fly ash: expansion agent = 65 : 16 : 9 : 10. Through optimization analysis, when the tube pressure strength is used as the evaluation index, the optimal plan A2B1C2, the bulk density as the evaluation index, the optimal plan A1B3C2, and the water absorption rate as the evaluation index, the optimal plan A3B1C3. Conclusion: The best sintering system for shale slag granule firing is preheating temperature 50°C. heating time 20min, holding time 15min, heating to 1100°C, heating for 40min, and finally holding for 20min. Through the optimization analysis of the analysis and analysis of variance results, it is known that the firing temperature has the most significant effect on the ceramsite performance.

Abstract:The technological conditions for preparation of red mud-coal gangue lightweight pottery sand were studied. The formulation of the lightweight pottery sand was determined by comparing the sintering images. The results indicated that as to the mixture of red mud and coal gangue, the expansion temperature of mixture decreased with the increasing of the content of red mud. The composition of 30% red mud and 70% coal gangue was determined to have the best expanding performance in this study and selected. The optimal technological conditions of lightweight pottery sand was systematically studied through orthogonal experiment method and accordingly the lightweight pottery sand with bulk density of 617.89kg/m(3), water absorption of 0.14%, the single particle compressive strength of 2.95MPa, the softening coefficient of 0.98 was successfully prepared using the selected composition after preheated at 550 degrees C for 20 min and then sintered at 1300 degrees C for 20min.

Abstract:The preparation, characteristics and mechanisms of sintered bricks manufactured by Yellow River silt and red mud were studied. The sintering shrinkage, weight loss on ignition, water absorption and compressive strength were tested to determine the optimum preparation condition. Sintering mechanisms were discussed through linear regression analysis. Crystalline components of raw materials and bricks were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Leaching toxicity of raw materials and bricks were measured according to sulphuric acid and nitric acid method. Radiation safety of the sintered bricks was characterized by calculating internal exposure index and external exposure index. The results showed that at the chosen best parameters (red mud content of 40%, sintering temperature of 1050°C and sintering time of 2h), the best characteristics of sintered bricks could be obtained. The weight loss on ignition of sintered bricks was principally caused by the removal of absorbed water and crystal water. The sintering shrinkage of sintered bricks mainly depended on sodium compounds and iron compounds of red mud. The sintering process made some components of raw materials transform into other crystals having better thermostability. Besides, the leaching toxicity and radioactivity index of sintered bricks produced under the optimum condition were all below standards.

Abstract:The development of raw soil-based insulating hollow bricks (RSIHB) provides a promising way for improving the efficiency of building energy conversation and resource utilization of construction waste soil. In this paper, the response surface method (RSM) was adopted to study the effect of multifactor on mechanical and thermal performances of modified raw soil-based samples. The results indicate that the thermal conductivity is significantly affected by the interactions between molding pressure and mixture moisture content, as well as between mixture moisture content and cement admixture. Thus, the optimal mix ratio was determined by the RSM-based regression model. The assessment based on numerical simulation demonstrates that the middle wall ribs immensely improve the stress concentration. The porous structure elongates the path of heat flow conduction, effectively enhancing the thermal resistance of the brick. In addition, bonding strength tests manifest that the mortar consistency should be within 60–80 mm for construction and plastering of the new raw soil-based insulating hollow brick. The research results have strong theoretical significance and practical value for recycling of construction waste and provide a reference for actual production and construction.

Abstract:The new mullite-SiC bricks were prepared by mullite homogenized grogs to substituted the bauxite clinkers (Al2O3content is 85% or 88%) as raw materials. In this paper, the physico-chemical properties and wear resistance of the new mullite-SiC bricks were studied by comparing with the ordinary mullite-SiC bricks produced by using bauxite clinkers as raw materials. The result shows that the new mullite-SiC bricks have low apparent porosity and bulk density, high compressive strength and refractoriness under load, excellent wear resistance. The mullite homogenized grogs can substitute the bauxite clinkers as materials to produce mullite-SiC bricks and improve the properties of the bricks.

Abstract:Nepheline‐based water‐permeable bricks are prepared with coal gangue and aluminum hydroxide by raw material pretreating, mixing, isostatic molding, roasting, and self‐curing. These bricks exhibit balance between their mechanical and water‐permeable properties. In this study, two main factors, the raw material ratio and the molding pressure, are studied. The mineral phase, porous structure, and mechanical properties of the samples are characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mercury injection, respectively. The compressive strength and water permeability of the bricks meet Chinese industry standard JC/T945‐2005 for water‐permeable bricks. The compressive strengths of the samples are between 30.6 and 34.3 MPa. The permeability coefficients range from 1.37 cm s −1 to 1.55 cm s −1 . © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 35: 779–785, 2016
Effects of retorting factors on combustion properties of shale char

Abstract:For obtaining high shale oil yield as well as treating shale char efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way in a new comprehensive utilization system of oil shale, a series of fundamental experiments have been conducted for exploring the effects of retorting factors on shale oil yield and shale char characteristics. Based on these previous studies, in this article, combustion experiments of shale chars obtained under various retorting conditions were performed with a Q5000IR thermogravimetric analyzer and a Leitz II-A heatable stage microscope and the effects of retorting factors were discussed on the combustion characteristics of shale char. Among four studied retorting parameters, retorting temperature and residence time exert very significant influence on the combustion characteristics of shale char. Either elevating the retorting temperature from 430 to 520 °C or lengthening the residence time at a low retorting temperature will largely decrease residual organic matters within shale char, resulting in decreasing mass loss in the low-temperature stage of combustion process of shale char, an elevation of ignition temperature and a shift of ignition mechanism from homogeneous to heterogeneous. One set of retorting condition was also recommended as a reference for designing the comprehensive utilization system of oil shale studied in this work: retort temperature of 460–490 °C, residence time of 20–40 min, particle size of <3 mm, and low heating rate of <10 °C/min.
