Abstract:Xunzijiaoshi(荀子校释) provides precise and appropriate annotations to Xunzi(荀子).It compiled and revisited the previous research available both within and without the country,dissolved doubts and problems and offered insightful opinions of the text of Xunzi.Nevertheless,little omissions and small errors are inevitable.Five mistakes are analyzed in this article: qi(齐) in heqi(和齐)shall not be pronounced differently;Shuai(率) has been mispronounced twice;Juan(蠲) in juanyi(蠲疑) is a borrowed character of ■,She(埶) in shezaibenchao shall be pronunced as she(设),and aishe(隘慑) is identical to dianai(垫隘) in Zuo.

Abstract:A recent theory provides a unified cross-linguistic analysis of the interpretations that are assigned to expressions for disjunction, Negative Polarity Items, Free Choice Items, and the non-interrogative uses of wh-phrases in languages such as Mandarin Chinese. If this approach is on the right track, children should be expected to demonstrate similar patterns in the acquisition of these linguistic expressions. Previous research has found that, by age four, children have acquired the knowledge that both the existential indefinite renhe "any" and wh-words in Mandarin Chinese are interpreted as Negative Polarity Items when they are bound by downward entailing operators, but the same expressions are interpreted as Free Choice Items (with a conjunctive interpretation) when they are bound by deontic modals (Mandarin keyi) or by the Mandarin adverbial quantifier dou "all". The present study extends this line of research to the Mandarin disjunction word huozhe. A Truth Value Judgment Task was used to investigate the possibility that disjunction phrases that are bound by the adverbial quantifier dou generate a conjunctive interpretation in the grammars of Mandarin-speaking 4-year-old children. The findings confirmed this prediction. We discuss the implications of the findings for linguistic theory and for language learnability.

Abstract:A good number of difficult common Chinese words without a clear account of sound and meaning are collected in dictionaries available after the Tang and Song Dynasties, such as Longkanshoujing, Sishengpianhai, Zihui, Zihuibu, and Kangxizidian and those like Hanyudazidian and Zhonghuazihai available in the present-day time. Based on Hanyusuzicongkao, this paper studies more than thirty difficult common words from large dictionaries like Hanyudazidian and corrects mistakes that occur in identifying and explaining those words according to a lot of firsthand reference material from Dunhuang Manuscripts.

Abstract:Hong Xingzu's Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)is one of the most important exegeses in ancient annotated texts of Chuci,it has many versions.Zhonghua Publisher printed the punctuated text of Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)in 1983.This punctuated text uses the Jiguge version as the original text,compiled by Bai Huawen and his assistants,but there have some errors in emendation and punctuation in the punctuated text.Depending on contrasting the various versions of Chucibuzhu(楚辞补注)and other works,this paper correct such errors above thiry items for inviting the specialists to offer their criticisms.

Abstract:More than ten pieces of Buddhist dictionary fragments are kept in the Seventeenth Dunhuang Manuscripts in the Russian Collections, from P. 305 to P. 326. The editors of the book didn’t name and give necessary explanations to these fragments. Judging by the copying style and handwriting, we conclude that these fragments may have a same source. According to their contents, we find they are fragments of Dafang’guangfohuayanjing translated by the monk Shicha’nantuo of Yutian, and its preface written by Wu Zetian the empress of the Zhou Dynasty. After patching-up, we collated these fragments, marking out the sentences where these knotty characters were picked from. Basing on some deliberate or particularly used characters, such as ″qie″,″ming″ and ″lian″ in the fragments, we conclude that they belong to the Heishuicheng Manuscripts and not the Dunhuang Manuscripts. This article hopes to set an example to the patching-up of fragments of Dunhuang Manuscripts or Heishuicheng Manuscripts, and to the judgement of their copying dates.
Probability Distribution of Interlingual Lexical Divergences in Chinese and English: (dao) and Said in Hongloumeng

Abstract:Previous studies have indicated that divergence exists in translation, which influences the quality of translation; such divergence follows some regularity which can be modeled by a probability distribution. The present article chose one verb dao from a Chinese literary classic Hongloumeng, and its English translation said to determine whether the frequencies of the two verbs develop according to a diversification process. Furthermore, we tend to find differences between the two English versions of Hawkes and Yang Xianyi regarding dao's translation, and we also investigated the role of the three causes of divergence in the diversification process. The result indicates that both dao's translations and the original text of said is in good agreement with the modified right-truncated Zipf-Alekseev distribution. Three major reasons were found for causing differences between the two translations: the nature of language, translators' subjectivity, and context. These are also the three major reasons for the diversification and differences of the two translated versions.

Abstract:There are many versions of the book Todaiwajyo Toseiden(唐大和尚东征传), Jianzhen’s biography, composed by Omino-Mihune in 779.The one published after 1762 is widely spread and has had great influence on the misreading of texts until today. The article, with the help of the ancient version still kept in Japan, analyses and corrects the misreading of the names and the food carried in the navigation, pointing out the importance of the original version in doing research on Chinese book in overseas countries.

Abstract:There was an old saying "禾绢闭眼诺,胡母大张橐" in the Annual of the Song Dynasty in History of the Southern Dynasties (420479 A.D.). But in the Song Dynasty (9601279 A.D.) at latest, people didn't know the definite meaning of the word "He Juan". The very word in literature after Tang times was generally symboled as the emperor, either neutral or commendatory. In the Qing Dynasty, some scholars recognized its confusing usage. The paper examines the meaning of "He Juan" from an etymological approach. The author points out that "He Juan" means the straw of wheat, and in the original context, it was used as a metaphor of the emperor Mingdi who was mediocre, unambitious and softheaded. The word was obviously misused in later literary works.

Abstract:In recent years,several kinds of annotations translations of Sanguozhi have been published.Each has its merits,but there are still some problems in respect of collation and explanation.In this article,we discuss those problems from three angles:topsy turviness of collation and explanation;misreading due to unfamilarity with the content;misreading due to unfamilarity with the language.We suggest that,in order to improve the annotations translations of Sanguozhi,we should pay much attention to the following study:a.to try to get familiar with classics,especially those before Wei Jin;b.to absorb all the fruits of Sanguozhi studies;c.to strengthen the studies of Sanguo culture and middle ancient chinese.
An Examination of the Origin of the Concept of Guoxue in Modern Time

Abstract:There are three viewpoints of the origin of the concept of "guoxue" in modern China at present, that is, they were put forward by Huang Zun-xian in 1887, by Liang Qi-chao in 1902 and by Wu Ru-lun in 1902 respectively. As a matter of fact, Huang Zun-xian just introduced the word "guoxue" in Chinese rather than the concept "guoxue". In August of 1902 Wu Ru-lun just wrote down in his journal the suggestion put forward by Japanese scholars who proposed to highlight "guoxue" in China, but he didn’t actually advocate it himself. Although Liang talked about the concept of "guoxue" in modern sense, he was not the first person to do so. After analysis of the literature, the author found it was Tu Ren-shou who first used the concept "guoxue" to highlight Chinese traditional Confucius.

Abstract:This article analyzes and corrects 61 mistakes in Zhouli Zhengyi(Vol.4)published by Zhonghua Book Company,which includes incorrect acceptances on the views between the Yis(i乙巳)edition and the Chu(楚)edition,and mutual mistakes resulting from the context,similar graphemes and meanings as well as redundancy,transpositions and wrong provenances.In addition,this article detects 46 mistakes in punctuations,omitted collations,confusing quotations,incorrect pauses,pauses at the wrong places,and mistakes in marking book titles,geographical and personal names.
