Abstract:Haodai(好歹in Chinese or good-bad)is a new term emerging in the history of modernChinese.It was formed of the two collocated antonymous adjectives hao(好or good)and dai(歹or bad).On the basis of the examples found in the documents,this paper is an attempt todelineate the development process of the meaning of haodai,systematically study thegrammaticalization and subjectivization of haodai from the cognitive perspective,and reveal itsinner motivation and cognitive law.According to its different functions,haodai can be divided into noun and adverb.The nounhaodai has two origins.One is that it becomes a unilateral compound due to the loss of themeaning of one component;two is that by means of metonymy it indicates the result of things orsituations.The degree of the grammaticalization of the latter is higher than that of the former.The adverb haodai can be classified into temporal adverb and modal adverb.From the perspectiveof cognitive linguistics,metaphor of the structural unit is the basic mechanism of the developmentof the former,and metonymy is the inner motivation of that of the latter.According to the degreeof its mood,the meaning of modal adverb haodai can be divided into three grades:concededly<in anycase<all to nothing.The subjectivity of modal adverb haodai is strong.Tracing its historical development,theauthor discovers that its subjectivity has gradually intensified.That is chiefly manifested in twoaspects.(1)Its linguistic environment has changed.Originally,it occurs primarily in thesentences in which things have already happened.Subsequently,it can occur in the sentences inwhich things have not materialized yet.Here it indicates the speakers'desire,emotion orevaluation.(2)Its syntactic position becomes flexible.Originally,it occurs mainly after thesubject of a sentence,giving emphasis to the comments of an utterance.Subsequently,it canoccur both after and before the subject of a sentence,modifying the proposition of the wholesentence.That is a process of subjectivization.

Abstract:The quantifier dou (roughly corresponding to English ‘all’) in Mandarin Chinese has been the topic of much discussion in the theoretical literature. This study investigated children’s knowledge of this quantifier using a new methodological technique, which we dubbed the Question-Statement Task. Three questions were addressed: (i) whether young Mandarin-speaking children know that dou is a universal quantifier that quantifies over the elements to its left, (ii) whether they know that dou is an adverb of quantification (Q-adverb) which can (unselectively) bind any variable in its domain, and (iii) whether they know that dou can quantify over wh -words. The main finding was that, by age four, Mandarin-speaking children have the relevant knowledge. The results reflect the early availability of adult-like linguistic knowledge of dou -quantification.
Donkey Pronouns in Child Mandarin: Insights into the ∃/∀ Dichotomy

Abstract:Donkey pronouns and plural definites show similarities in their semantic interpretation. The parallels between the two elements seem to suggest a unified analysis. Studies of children’s understanding of plural definites show that children initially interpret plural definites existentially rather than universally. The findings invite us to ask whether children also exhibit a preference for interpreting donkey pronouns existentially. Two experiments were conducted to compare children’ and adults’ interpretation of donkey pronouns in conditional and relative- clause donkey sentences. The results of Experiment 1 show that children preferred the ∃-reading, whereas adults entertained the ∀-reading for both types of donkey sentences in upward- entailing contexts. Experiment 2 examined whether monotonicity influences the interpretation of donkey pronouns by creating a downward-entailing context. The findings were that in a downward-entailing context both children and adults preferred the ∃-reading. The findings led us to propose that the ∃-reading is perhaps the basic semantics of donkey pronouns while the ∀-reading is derived, and we suggest that the derivational path is bridged by free choice strengthening. The findings were then discussed in relation to the analysis of homogeneity and plural predication by Bar-Lev (2020).

Abstract:A recent theory provides a unified cross-linguistic analysis of the interpretations that are assigned to expressions for disjunction, Negative Polarity Items, Free Choice Items, and the non-interrogative uses of wh-phrases in languages such as Mandarin Chinese. If this approach is on the right track, children should be expected to demonstrate similar patterns in the acquisition of these linguistic expressions. Previous research has found that, by age four, children have acquired the knowledge that both the existential indefinite renhe "any" and wh-words in Mandarin Chinese are interpreted as Negative Polarity Items when they are bound by downward entailing operators, but the same expressions are interpreted as Free Choice Items (with a conjunctive interpretation) when they are bound by deontic modals (Mandarin keyi) or by the Mandarin adverbial quantifier dou "all". The present study extends this line of research to the Mandarin disjunction word huozhe. A Truth Value Judgment Task was used to investigate the possibility that disjunction phrases that are bound by the adverbial quantifier dou generate a conjunctive interpretation in the grammars of Mandarin-speaking 4-year-old children. The findings confirmed this prediction. We discuss the implications of the findings for linguistic theory and for language learnability.

Abstract:An examination to dao (arrive) in different syntactic environments helps to reinforce the multi-functionality of Chinese verb dao and the grammaticalization of it. Examples from Chinese suggest that 1) dao has changed to a preposition in Dao-NP-VP when V is lai (come) or qu (go); 2) dao is still a verb in V-Dao, the main function of which is directional complement or resultative complement; 3) dao has grammaticalized to a complement marker in V-Dao-C if dao precedes a predicate structure. It is found that dao has developed from a notional word to a functional word, but it has not totally grammaticalized to be a typical functional word and is still on the process of further grammaticalization.
On the Semantic Complexity of Dou in Mandarin: A Partially Unified Account

Abstract:Pre-theoretical research of dou( 都) in Mandarin has established three major uses of the word ( dou 1 : sum up; dou 2 : even; dou 3 : already) . This is a consensus and common sense among Chinese linguists. In various theoretical characterizations of dou,the word was first treated as a universal quantification operator,but this view has been rejected by more and more linguists because they have taken up the view that dou 1 is a distributive operator. Other disputes concerning dou focus on whether the three uses of dou share the same underlying semantic core. However,even those linguists who argue that they do share a semantic core cannot agree on what the semantic core is. The author of this paper argues that the semantics of dou 1 consists of two parallel components,namely the meaning of distribution and that of relative large quantity. Likewise,the semantics of dou 2 and dou 3 also consists of the meaning of relative large quantity. Therefore,a unified semantic characterization of the three uses of dou can be achieved,though only partially.

Abstract:Dou has been seen as a typical example of universal quantification and the point of departure in the formal study of quantification in Chinese. The constraints on dou’s quantificational structure, dou’s diverse uses, and the compatibility between dou and other quantificational expressions have further promoted the refinement of the theory of quantification and sparked debate over the semantic nature of dou. The universal quantificational approach holds that dou is a universal quantifier and explains its diverse uses as the effects produced by quantification on different sorts of entities and different ways of quantificational mapping. However, non-quantificational approaches, integrating the insights of degree semantics and focus semantics, take the scalar use as dou’s core semantics. The quantificational approach to dou can account for its meaning of exclusiveness and the interpretational differences engendered by dou when it associates with a wh-indeterminate to its left or to its right, whereas non-quantificational approaches cannot determine the interpretational differences caused by rightward and leftward association and cannot explain the exclusive use of dou. Despite the differences, the various approaches to dou, quantificational or non-quantificational, have far-reaching theoretical significance for understanding the mechanism of quantification in natural language.
A DG Account of the Descriptive and Resultative De-Constructions in Chinese.

Abstract:This contribution examines the descriptive and resultative de-constructions in Mandarin Chinese, e.g. Wǒ pǎo-de hěn kuai ‘I run very fast’. There is a longstanding debate about this construction. The primary point of dispute concerns the main predicate: Is the first predicate the root of the sentence, i.e. pǎo-de ‘run’, or is the second predicate the root, i.e. kuai ‘fast’? We demonstrate here that from a dependency grammar (DG) perspective, the second predicate should be taken as the root. A number of diagnostics support this conclusion: 1) yes/no-questions with ma, 2) position of the negation bu, 3) omission, 4) placement of the adverb yě ‘also’, 5) ne-questions, and 6) modal insertion. The conclusion is important for the development of DG as applied to the syntax of Mandarin, since many basic questions about Mandarin sentence structure have not yet been examined from a DG perspective.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to verify the morphologic and syntactic characteristics of adverbial dependent noun ‘Yang, Deut, Tye(che)’ in Daehanmaeilsinbo. The result could be summarized as follows. A morphologic characteristics of dependent noun confirmed the constraints of back element. The ‘Yang’ combined with case marker, copula, but not combined with auxiliary marker, back element ellipsis, ‘ha-da’, etc. The ‘Deut’ combined auxiliary marker, back element ellipsis, ‘ha-da’ etc. also The ‘Tye(che)’ combined auxiliary marker, back element ellipsis, ‘ha-da’ etc. A syntactic characteristics confirmed a difference of preceding predicate, adnominal ending, following predicate. Firstly look out the preceding predicate, the ‘Yang’ only integrated verbs and adjectives. However, the ‘Deut’ and ‘Tye(che)’ are integrated verbs, adjectives, copula . Secondly look out adnominal ending, the ‘Yang’ and ‘Deut’ are integrated‘-n’ and ‘-l’. However the ‘Tye(che)’ only integrated ‘-n’. finally look out following predicate, the ‘Yang’ integrated verbs and copula, and the ‘Deut’ integrated verbs and adjectives, ‘ha-da’, ‘sip-da’. and Tye(che)’ integrated verbs, ‘ha-da’, ‘aniha-da’.

Abstract:Speakers and listeners produce and process language in chunks. These chunks are not arbitrary combinations of words, but rather they are motivated in part by the syntactic structure of the sentences at hand. This article employs chunking data collected from informants to examine and reach conclusions about the syntactic structure of Mandarin sentences. Five prominent constructions are explored: 1) pivotal sentences, 2) serial verb constructions (or co-verbs), 3) V-de constructions, 4) ha" constructions, and 5) bei constructions. The account is couched in a dependency grammar (DG) approach to syntax. A relatively new unit of syntax, the component, plays a central role in the analysis. The message is in part that the component is a more suitable unit of syntax for predicting how informants choose to chunk sentences than the phrase structure grammar (PSG) constituent. Abstract:This paper analyzes two discourse markers in Chinese: Shuí zhīdào(谁知道) and Bié shuō(别说). These two discourse markers are the result of lexicalization. During the process of acquiring the function of discourse marker, Shuí zhīdào and Bié shuō experienced similar syntactic and semantic changes. Syntactically, they all started as free phrase and became single word-like unit. Semantically, they all underwent conventionalization and semanticization of utterance meaning. Many Chinese discourse markers originated from verbal constructions, appearing either in the front position or in the final position of a clause. They do not tend to be cliticized as some other functional categories, and they can have variants in form. The analysis of discourse markers can throw some light on the relationship between lexicalization and grammaticalization: The two processes can lead to the same kind of result, i.e. both of them can give birth to functional categories, and the two processes can apply to the same form successively.

Abstract:Relations between noun modifiers or adnonimals and their head nouns, along with their distribution features, differentiate the stylistic features among languages, and distinguish text genres in a given language. Following a systematic and comprehensive description of adnominal constructions in modern Chinese, this paper explores their rank-frequency distribution properties against three models: the original Zipf’s law, the Zipf-Alekseev law and the Popescu-Altmann-Köhler (PAK) function, with acceptable result for the first and good results for the latter two. The PAK function as a function for stratified texts works well. The research findings validate the categorization in the paper and further prove that adnominals in modern Chinese are normal language units.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the qualia modification relationships of disyllabic adjective-noun compounds in Mandarin both quantitatively and qualitatively. It reveals that an adjective morpheme selectively constraints the qualia roles of the noun morpheme. Generally, when the adjective morpheme modifies the formal role or the constitutive role of the noun morpheme, a noun needs to be added in the process of meaning construction. When the adjective morpheme modifies the agentive role, the telic role or the conventionalized attribute, a verb needs to be added. Furthermore, both qualia structure and conceptual blending contribute to the meaning construction of adjective-noun compounds. If an adjective morpheme activates more than one qualia roles or qualia values, there will be polysemy or ambiguity.

Abstract:Bei sentences in Mandarin Chinese with SOV word order have attracted extensive interest. However, their semantic features lacked quantitative evidence and their cognitive features received insufficient attention. Therefore, the current study aims to quantitatively investigate the semantic and cognitive features through the analysis of nine annotated factors in a corpus. The results regarding bei sentences show that (i) subjects exhibit a tendency to be definite and animate; non-adversative verbs have gained popularity over time, and intransitive verbs are capable of taking objects; (ii) subject relations tend to be long, implying heavy cognitive load, whereas the dependencies governed by subjects are often short, suggesting light cognitive load; and (iii) certain semantic factors significantly impact cognitive factors; for instance, animate subjects tend to govern shorter dependencies. Overall, our study provides empirical support for the semantic features of bei sentences and reveals their cognitive features using dependency distance.

Abstract:Based on the qualia structure and semantic type proposed in the Generative Lexicon Theory (GLT),we annotated the disyllabic metaphorical noun-noun compounds in Mandarin Chinese to explore the qualia roles involved in the process of metaphor and the correlation between the semantic type of the wnstituent morphemes and that of the compounds.We found that:the formal role is the most frequently involved in the process of metaphor,which is motivated by the nature of human cognition.On the other hand,natural types tend to involve the constitutive role and the artifactual types are likely to involve the telic role.Moreover,the semantic type of morphemes can predicate the semantic type of compounds.

Abstract:This study proposes that the double object construction(DOC)is derived from two single object constructions,while one of them undergoes semantic absorption and is morphologically incorporated into the other during grammaticalization.It argues that this analysis not only defines the base structure of Chinese more strictly,but also offers a better explanation for the derivation of DOC and predicts its derivative paths.To illustrate this idea,the author first surveys briefly some existing analyses on DOC,and then proves his own hypotheses of semantic absorption and incorporation,while discussing the syntactic results of two current analyses on DOC.Finally,it shows the theoretical implication and pedagogical application of this analysis.

Abstract:This article delineates the internal structure of mensural classifiers in Mandarin Chinese by arguing that each mensural classifier in Mandarin Chinese contains a silent semantic primitive SCALE, which can be modified by a restricted set of gradable adjectives. Viewing this silent scalar element as a grammatical object explains away a set of puzzles in Chinese linguistics, including the restricted use of adjectives before mensural classifiers, the seemingly free distributional patterns of verbal measure phrases, and the number indeterminacy in the verb reduplication construction.
