Abstract:Ever since the beginning of the 20th century,the Japanese Buddhist scholars have carried out thorough examination of the general picture,the translators and the doubtful authenticity of the Chinese version of the Buddhist scriptures,including the Eastern Han's Buddhist scriptures.Erich Zürcher,a famous Dutch sinologist,writes a broad outline of the linguistic characteristics of the Eastern Han's Buddhist trans-lation,gives a clear exposition of the translation terminology and style of the Chinese version of the Buddhist scriptures in the different stages of translation,and provides a list of the translated works of the Eastern Han's Buddhist scriptures based on textual research.

Abstract:Understanding lexical characteristics of clinical documents is the foundation of sublanguage based Medical Language Processing (MLP) approach.However, there are limited studies focused on the lexical characters of Chinese clinical documents.In this study, a lexical characteristics analysis on both syntactic and semantic levels was conducted in a clinical corpus which contains 3,500 clinical documents generated during daily practices.The analysis was based on the automatic tagging results of a lexiconbased part-of-speech (POS) and semantic tagging method.The medical lexicon contains 237,291 entries annotated with both semantic and syntactic classes.The normalized frequency of different terms, syntactic and semantic classes was calculated and visualized.Major contribution of this paper is providing a wide-coverage Chinese medical semantic lexicon and presenting the lexical characteristics of Chinese clinical documents.Both of these will lay a good foundation for sublanguage based MLP studies in China.
A Textual Study on the Age of Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing Based on Some Buddhist Terms

Abstract:Scholars differ in their opinions on the features,author,record,editions and the age of popularity of Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing whose translator was unknown and which was affiliated to the Buddhist sutra catalogue of Eastern Han Dynasty.Some argued that it was a fake Buddhist sutra.Others claimed that it was a translated Buddhist sutra,but the translation was not done in Eastern Han Dynasty.In this paper,we try to verify its age by analyzing 12 Buddhist terms. According to the studies of Lou Yulie,the term "Avalokitevara"(观世音菩萨) appeared for the first time in the translations of the famous Buddha Kumarajiva living in Later Qin Dynasty.The detailed information of the other eleven Buddhist terms is as follows: Some of them appeared for the first time in the translated versions during or after Eastern Jin Dynasty,such as "mahākarunā"(大悲愿),"Sazhe Niqian"(萨遮尼乾),"Tianbaohua"(天宝花/华),"incalculable kalpasakhyeya"(无量百千万亿阿僧祇劫) which was an idiom used to describe an extremely long period of time,and "an arrow's flight"(一箭道),a length unit in Buddhist sutras."Buqingyou"(不请友) appeared in the Buddhist sutras written by native Chinese after Eastern Jin Dynasty.The ten kinds of concrete names—"Buddha"(如来),"Bhujisya"(应供),"Samyak-sambuddhah"(正遍知),"Vidyā-carana-sampanna"(明行足),"Svayambhū"(善逝),"Lokavid"(世间解),"Sattva-sāra"(无上士),"Purusa-damaka"(调御丈夫),"Nara-nāyaka"(天人师) and "Bhagavat"(佛世尊)—which were the same as the ten names of Buddha in Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing appeared for the first time in the translations of Eastern Jin Dynasty and were frequently used especially in Kumarajiva's translations.Apart from Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing,the term "Sanzang Jiubu"(三藏九部) appeared in the Buddhist sutras written by native Chinese after the Northern and Southern Dynasties."The Palace of Shishi(释氏宫)," where Sakyamuni lived,first appeared in Kumarajiva's translations in the Later Qin Dynasty but became ″Shishi Jingshe″(释氏精舍) in Eastern Han Dynasty."Si Weituo"(四围陀) is found in the translations of Later Qin Dynasty."Tianbao Xiang"(天宝香) and "Tianbaohua" were the offerings that Buddhists contributed to the Buddha."Xiang"(香),"Tianxiang"(天香),"Hua"(花/华) and "Tianhua"(天花/华) were used only in the Buddhist sutras of Eastern Han Dynasty,with "Tianbaohuaxiang"(天宝花香) first appearing in the Buddhist sutras of the Three-Kingdom period.In the translations of Eastern Han and Three-Kingdom periods,only "Wugai"(五盖),the first part of ″Wugai Shichan″(五盖十缠) was used,and "Shichan"(十缠) first appeared in the translations of Later Qin Dynasty,with the combination "Wugai Shichan" appearing for the first time in the Kantiqlyuluqnombitig of Southern Liang Dynasty. These twelve Buddhist terms show that Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing was not written in Eastern Han.If it is a translation,it should be done after Eastern Jin Dynasty.Special attention should be paid to the terms "Sanzang Jiubu" and "Wugai Shichan."Their credible examples were all found after Song of Southern Dynasties.We can draw the conclusion that Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing was a Buddhist sutra whose age of compilation was very close to Chusanzangji Ji(between the year 510 A.D.and 518 A.D.) and Jinglu Yixiang(in the year 516 A.D.).Thus it is really odd that its translator was unknown.Meanwhile,apart from the use in Dafangbianfo Bao'en Jing,the term "Wugai Shichan" only appeared in Buddhist literature written by native Chinese.According to the above analysis,we arrive at the tentative conclusion that this sutra was written by native Chinese Buddhists,and was not a translated version.

Abstract:Previous studies have indicated that divergence exists in translation, which influences the quality of translation; such divergence follows some regularity which can be modeled by a probability distribution. The present article chose one verb dao from a Chinese literary classic Hongloumeng, and its English translation said to determine whether the frequencies of the two verbs develop according to a diversification process. Furthermore, we tend to find differences between the two English versions of Hawkes and Yang Xianyi regarding dao's translation, and we also investigated the role of the three causes of divergence in the diversification process. The result indicates that both dao's translations and the original text of said is in good agreement with the modified right-truncated Zipf-Alekseev distribution. Three major reasons were found for causing differences between the two translations: the nature of language, translators' subjectivity, and context. These are also the three major reasons for the diversification and differences of the two translated versions.

Abstract:Chán Buddhist literature is not only an important source for the study of religious thought during the Chinese late medieval and early modern periods, but also constitutes a treasure trove for investigating the development of the colloquial language of the respective periods, both in terms of semantics and syntactic constructions. Since the editors of Chán Buddhist literature—such as the Recorded Saying and Transmission of the Lamp texts—claimed to convey the "living words" of the patriarchs and masters, numerous vernacularisms were integrated in the dialogue sections of the texts, and the use of traditional Buddhist terminology was often reduced to a minimum. Frequently, Chán Buddhist texts are among the earliest sources in which these colloquialisms surfaced. In this paper, we focus on expressions which derive from the colloquial language of the late Táng and Sòng periods, and which were integrated in Chán Buddhist literature, often assuming a particular metaphorical meaning in the rhetorical structure of the texts. We reconstruct their original meaning, their use in the Chán texts, as well as their further development in Sinitic languages and dialects. Besides contributing to a better understanding of the vocabulary used in the enigmatic language of Chán literature and the metaphorical mapping of originally colloquial expressions in a religious context, in this preliminary study, we also hope to contribute to a better understanding of the development of semantic items from the perspective of historical linguistics, their complex paths of metaphorical extensions, as well as their usage in local linguistic contexts. In addition, the case studies also illustrate the transformative force of religion on the development of language, and the complex interplay between religious ideas and linguistic expression.
A Corpus-Based Study on the Spanish Translation of 道 (dao) in The Analects

Abstract:This article has chosen seven Spanish translations of The Analects to conduct comparative research focusing on one culture-specific item, 道 (dao). Subscribed to a descriptive approach based mainly on norms postulated by Toury and Equivalence by Nida, it endeavors to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the main strategies in its translation? 2) What are the possible motivators of translation similarities and differences? This research combines quantitative and qualitative analysis methods based on corpus building. Corpus-based, this study describes the translation of 道 in Classical Chinese and its translation equivalence into Spanish. The findings demonstrated that various strategies and words are used to translate 道. When it functions as a verb, the literal translation is used, and different verbs are employed to express the meaning given the context. Moreover, decisions on verb tense, sentence structure, and grammatical subject also seem to vary significantly across translators. When 道 is used as a noun, translators show different preferences for word choices. Instances for both dynamic and formal equivalence have been observed, pointing out that these two concepts should not be analyzed in isolation, as they stand in a dynamic relationship. Translators also make adaptations to reach adequacy and acceptability in translation. Detailed results are discussed in light of these theories, and this study views translation as a socio, linguistic, cultural, and translator-based activity.
The Patching-up and Study on Some Buddhist Dictionary Fragments, Represented by NO. 18974, Dunhuang Manuscripts in the Russian Collections

Abstract:More than ten pieces of Buddhist dictionary fragments are kept in the Seventeenth Dunhuang Manuscripts in the Russian Collections, from P. 305 to P. 326. The editors of the book didn’t name and give necessary explanations to these fragments. Judging by the copying style and handwriting, we conclude that these fragments may have a same source. According to their contents, we find they are fragments of Dafang’guangfohuayanjing translated by the monk Shicha’nantuo of Yutian, and its preface written by Wu Zetian the empress of the Zhou Dynasty. After patching-up, we collated these fragments, marking out the sentences where these knotty characters were picked from. Basing on some deliberate or particularly used characters, such as ″qie″,″ming″ and ″lian″ in the fragments, we conclude that they belong to the Heishuicheng Manuscripts and not the Dunhuang Manuscripts. This article hopes to set an example to the patching-up of fragments of Dunhuang Manuscripts or Heishuicheng Manuscripts, and to the judgement of their copying dates.
On the Value of Tongjiazi in the Chinese Translation of Buddhist Scriptures for the Research on Words of Buddhist Sutras

Abstract:There are many Tongjiazi in the Chinese versions of Buddhist Scriptures. They have distinctive characteristics, and are closely related to the study of the words in translated Buddhist scriptures. Studying Tongjiazi is valuable and meaningful for the study of the words in the translated Buddhist scriptures,which will be discussed in the following five aspects: First, it examines the meanings of the words and helps interpret the sutras correctly. For many difficult words in Chinese Buddhist translations, it is difficult to find an explanation if only its literal meaning is examined, but it is possible to analyze Tongjiazi and find the original word and then interpret the meaning of sutras correctly. For example, the "隤" in "云隤" is the interchangeable word of "队","划" in the "划其身" is the interchangeable word of "丳",and"落" in the "落治" should be read as "()". So the meanings of 隤,刬,落 can be explained correctly with a background knowledge of their respective interchangeable word. Second, it provides new ideas and evidence for the existing research and offers a new interpretation of the Buddhist scriptures. Some researches on the words of Buddhist translations are inadequate literal interpretations without truly understanding the meanings, or fail to explain the development of the meanings. Analyzing interchangeable words can be a way to clarify the misinterpretation and to elucidate the reasons for the correct meanings. For example, "脯" in "脯煮" should be read as"缹";"脯煮" is equivalent to boiled,and doesn't mean be dried and boiled as was explained by Prof. Seishi Karashima. Furthermore, words such as "疽尅","诱訹" and"牒" get new interpretations from the interchangeable words in the text. Third, it helps identify the arbitrary changes to the texts of Buddhist scriptures caused by the ignorance of the interchangeable word,and base the research of the words of Buddhist Sutras on the actual texts. Interchangeable words often change with the times. A good knowledge of the interchangeable words in the Chinese Buddhist translations helps discern and correct the mistakes in the arbitrary changes so that the research of the words of Buddhist translations can be based on the original texts. Fourth, it helps us to get out of the dilemma of the usage of words and date the words accurately. The form of Chinese vocabulary is complicated and the words in Buddhist translations are no exception. This impedes the dating work. Analyzing interchangeable words gives us a better understanding of the diversity of the forms of the words in Buddhist translations, and distinguishes character and word so that the words are dated accurately. At the same time, the dating of the words also benefits the dating of a certain translated version of Buddhist Sutra. Fifth, it helps identify the written form of the words and thus avoid mistakes when incorporating certain lost lexical items into dictionaries. Currently,using Buddhist texts to supplement the lost items into Chinese Dictionary is a focus in the study of words and expressions used in the Buddhist Scriptures. However, some words which were not included in the dictionaries have been mistaken as lost or error words. Studying the interchangeable words in Chinese Buddhist translations is helpful in distinguishing such words and their written forms.

Abstract:Working from the readers' perspective, this study first investigates the online acceptance of the complete English translations of The Analects by investigating the number of online comments, downloads, academic citations, and other factors, and it ranks the different English versions according to how well they are received. The complete English translations of The Analects by D. C. Lau, James Legge, and 15 other translators are found to be well received by readers on mainstream online platforms. Then, based on five natural language processing (NLP) algorithms (TF-IDF, Word2Vec, GloVe, BERT, and SimHash), the 15 well-received English versions of The Analects are taken as samples to calculate semantic similarity. By comparing the semantic differences among the texts, this study analyzes the factors that affect the diversification of translated texts. (1) The influence of Chinese annotation on the translation semantics is great, even the greatest among many influential factors; and (2) different translators' identities, the translation era, the translation purpose, and the translation background do not significantly affect the semantic influence of the translation. On the one hand, the readers can understand the differences between the different translations and choose an appropriate translation for their reading and learning more effectively. On the other hand, using the algorithms of NLP, we focus on the semantic similarity of different English translations of The Analects and analyze them to show the semantic differences quantitatively, which makes the comparison more intuitive and efficiently. Such a quantitative presentation of the results draws scholars' attention to the differences in the translations.
Orality in dubbing vs. subtitling: a corpus-based comparative study on the use of mandarin sentence final particles in AVT

Abstract:Much research has been done on orality in dubbing, but orality in subtitling remains largely unexplored. This study seeks to address this by examining and comparing translators' use of Mandarin Sentence Final Particles (SFPs) 啊/呀 ( a / ya ), 吧 ( ba ), and 呢 ( ne ) in both translation modes against the benchmark of how they are used in non-translated Chinese dialogues. The use of SFPs is evaluated by the frequency of their occurrence and collocation patterns. A comparable corpus was compiled for the analysis. Statistical results show that, although subtitling is often assumed to be a mode that prioritises conciseness and brevity over orality, subtitling translators show a stronger tendency to uphold orality by using more selected SFPs than dubbing translators. Examination of the collocation patterns of SFPs in the corpus reveals more similarities than differences between the two AVT modes in using SFPs. Where differences are spotted, the limited cases studied are insufficient for drawing a conclusion about which translation mode is closer to non-translated dialogues. Three factors are identified as being contributive to the findings: institutional working procedures, interference from the source language, and translators' recourse to simplification.
Contributions, Questions and New Projects of Studies on Chinese Lexicalization

Abstract:Lexicalization is a very common kind of language change that is worth exploring. In this paper, we summarize the contributions of studies on lexicalization. First of all, studies on lexicalization can reveal regularities of language change. Secondly it can provide explanations to some synchronic issues. Thirdly, it can benefit the compilation of historical dictionaries. We explain some critical issues in studies on lexicalization, including the following questions: (1)Is the change of becoming a functional word lexicalization or grammaticalization? (2) Are coordinating disyllabic words the result of lexicalization or word formation? (3) What are the differences between lexicalization due to citation and lexicalization occurred naturally in language change? (4) What are the differences between lexicalization and word formation? There are a lot of achievements in previous studies on lexicalization, but there are also some shortcomings. Most importantly, some studies are merely case study without any discussion in theory. There are also some problems in the details of the studies. Currently, there are few studies combining lexicalization with other issues in language, which are highly needed. We put forward some new research projects in the field of lexicalization. For example, semantic change during the process of lexicalization and the typological differences in diachronic lexicalization.

Abstract:The etymology of the terms in Hui hui yao fang (Huihui Formularies) is complicated. Their origin might be Arabian, Persian, or Sanskrit, or even the northern dialects of Han language during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. There are obvious mistakes or indefinite decipherments and interpretations of the terms in Song Xian's Investigated Annotations of Huihui Formularies. There are also missing annotations for those transliterated terms. To tackle such defects, 12 such terms are deciphered and annotated here.

Abstract:Sui and Tang Dynasties were the most important period of translation of Buddhist canons and movement of study Buddhism to India and Central Asia. In order to understand complicated Buddhism and study foreign knowledge, people had first to learn Indian Sanskrit or other ethnic languages in western regions. As a result, Buddhist and non-Buddhist scholars began to write or edit various kinds of rudimental books and imperative reference books, for example, Buddhist dictionaries, Sanskrit-Chinese wordbooks, interpretation of pronunciations and meanings in Buddhist canon. This paper discusses the vogue of study and use of foreign languages in Tang Dynasty.
