Abstract:The Analects is one of the great works of traditional Chinese culture, and its translation has been an important part of cultural exchange in the past hundred years. The English versions of the Analects have reached more than 40, including that of James Legge’s and Ku Hungming’s. James Legge was a missionary and a famous British Sinologist; Ku Hungming was a famous Chinese scholar who got educated in the west. Their versions represent the highest level at that time. Legge is known for his rigorous responsibility to the original text, "faithful to the original". His version is of a scholar translation style, which can be summed up as "truthfully, lengthy and dull." Ku Hungming was renowned at home and abroad for his unique and weird style in Qing Dynasty. He received Western education and was deeply influenced by Western Romanticism. Most of his articles are written in English, even the native English speakers feel surprised by his extraordinary English proficiency. Ku also made great achievements in imputing Chinese classics to the west. In order to make the content easily acceptable to the Westerners, he tried his best to avoid Chinese names and places, and in order to evoke the original idea of the readers, he widely cited the western allusions and famous sayings. So Ku’s translations are widely spread in Europe. This paper focuses mainly on three parts. First, the translation differences of the two versions are investigated from the language to the overall translation techniques. Then, the causes of differences are analyzed, which include cultural background, Sinology skills, purposes and audience awareness. Finally, the way to translate Chinese classics like The Analects is briefly summarized.

Abstract:"The Analects," as a compilation of the words and deeds of Confucius and his disciples during the Spring and Autumn Period, stands as one of the classic works of the Confucian school of thought. This work is not only one of China's "four Books", but also occupies an important position in the global culture. The popularity of its numerous English translations reflects its profound influence worldwide. Based on the theory of Reception Aesthetics, this paper analyzes how the English translations by James Legge and Xu Yuanchong meet the expectations of readers in different cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, it points out that translation practices grounded in Reception Aesthetics not only enrich the expressive forms of literary works but also provide new perspectives for promoting cross-cultural communication and understanding.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the communicative effectiveness of translated versions of The Analects from an Anglophone perspective using a questionnaire-based survey targeting English-speaking academics. Sinologists, translators, and readers specializing in East Asian philosophy provided insights about their preferences, reading expectations, and opinions regarding the translations’ influence. The findings indicate a preference for translations that they considered to be not entirely fluent, but rather more accurate and in an easily accessible and readable form. Other important considerations include the content of translations and the translations’ influence on their value systems and cultural orientations. The study also suggests that collaborative efforts in translating Chinese classics could enhance quality, meet readers’ needs more effectively, and promote East–West cultural exchange. Recommendations are made for translators and publishers to support a more balanced interaction among scholars, translators, and readers in China and the Anglophone world, enriching Confucian studies with a communicative approach.

Abstract:In the Chinese context, translations have served as a useful conduit for providing access to wider literature authored in other languages. A prominent question has been whether translators' linguistic choices are influenced by factors such as translators' social and cultural background and emotions towards the texts they are translating. When multiple translations of the same text over a span of time are produced, another layer of complexity is introduced, and research such as the present study, must examine how or whether variation in the expression of emotions within translations produced over a period of time is discernible. To this end, the present study made use of Lexicon-based Sentiment Analysis (LBSA), a common natural language processing (NLP) approach, to study people's attitudes, opinions or emotions towards a certain person or thing. LBSA has attracted much attention in the literary works or translated works for analyzing reader response and appraisal of the works themselves. The present study undertook a diachronic comparison of emotions and sentiments in five translations of David Copperfield based on the emotion lexicons. The corpus of the study comprised translations of five books and 3,084,599 tokens. We applied the computational method of emotion and sentiment analysis to the emotion words in the five translations. In addition, we used python and R package to analyze the positive and negative words in five versions. The study revealed that translators as social beings in the target world express unique reactions towards the same emotion in the original text as well as in literary translations. Yet, the modern vernacular Chinese versions also showcase a similarity in the expression of emotions thus demonstrating the decisive role of the overall flow of emotion in the original plays and in translation. The contribution of the study is significant as it is a pioneering investigation given that it undertakes a sentiment and emotion analysis of literary translations in Chinese.

Abstract:Existing studies in the literature to date on the English translation of Lun Yu are mostly on the linguistic level.Few scholars have probed into the relationship between the English translation of Lun Yu and the transmission and succession of the Chinese culture.Taking Waley's version of The Analects as a sample and based on the theory of the manipulation of ideology,this study makes further explorations in the misinterpretation and mistranslation in the English translation of Chinese classics.The research findings are as follows:1.The misinterpretation and mistranslation in the English translation of Chinese classics are closely connected to ideology;2.When interpreting and translating meanings in a foreign culture,translators should treat them with caution;3.Scholars working on Confucianism and translation studies should work together in the transmission and succession of the excellent traditional Chinese culture so as to make Confucianism known to the world.

Abstract:The language of the Analects of Confucius is concise, rich in connotation and highly abstract, so the problem of lack of meaning or semantic insufficiency is very obvious, and the numerical meaning is one of the most obvious examples. Based on Susan Bassnett view of cultural translation, this paper analyzes Gu Hongming's translated version of Analects and finds that there are great cultural differences between Chinese and Western numerals in terms of definite reference and vague reference. In addition to definite reference, Chinese numbers also have the function of vague reference; In English, numbers are mostly used in definite reference, and vague reference is mostly based on larger numbers. This increases the difficulty for translators and readers to understand the original work. In addition to having a solid bilingual foundation, the translator should have a profound bilingual cultural knowledge to realize the translation of cultural information behind the language. The theory of cultural translation has certain feasibility in guiding the translation of Chinese classics into English, which can promote the foreign translation of Chinese classics and has certain practical significance in promoting the transmission of Chinese culture to the world.

Abstract:Hongloumeng by Xueqin Cao (Hsueh-ch‘in Ts'ao) is generally considered one of the greatest classical Chinese novel. Of all nine published English translations known today, the one translated by Hawkes and Minford (the Story of the Stone, Penguin, 1973–86) and the other by Yang and Yang (A Dream of Red Mansions1, Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, 1978–80) are the best known among translators and literary scholars. Over the years, both have been carefully scrutinized and much critiqued. Translators and translation scholars have been engaged in heated debates over salient features of the translations, strategies employed by the translators, the possible effects of the two translations and so on [cf. Abstract:Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.
Evaluation of Google Translate for Mandarin Chinese translation using sentiment and semantic analysis

Abstract:Machine translation using large language models (LLMs) is having a significant global impact, making communication easier. Mandarin Chinese is the official language used for communication by the government and media in China. In this study, we provide an automated assessment of translation quality of Google Translate with human experts using sentiment and semantic analysis. In order to demonstrate our framework, we select the classic early twentieth-century novel 'The True Story of Ah Q' with selected Mandarin Chinese to English translations. We use Google Translate to translate the given text into English and then conduct a chapter-wise sentiment analysis and semantic analysis to compare the extracted sentiments across the different translations. Our results indicate that the precision of Google Translate differs both in terms of semantic and sentiment analysis when compared to human expert translations. We find that Google Translate is unable to translate some of the specific words or phrases in Chinese, such as Chinese traditional allusions. The mistranslations may be due to lack of contextual significance and historical knowledge of China.

Abstract:Bibliometric methods and CiteSpace software have been used to analyze the research trends and hotspots in the translation field of The Analects over the past 11 years. The results indicate a gradual decline in the volume of publications, yet keyword analysis reveals that 论语 (the analects), 翻译 (translation), and 辜鸿铭 (Gu Hongming) remain focal points of research. Collaboration among authors is relatively limited, suggesting a need for enhancement in both the depth and breadth of research. Furthermore, there is a growing body of research on the translation and dissemination of The Analects, reflecting an increased interest in the inheritance and innovation of traditional culture. Through this study, the developmental trends and academic hotspots are comprehensively presented, offering comparatively valuable references and insights for future research endeavors.

Abstract:The visibility of translator's style is a much-discussed topic in translation studies with the application of corpus tools. So far, however, no agreement has been reached. The present study aims to explore this issue by a comparison of three Chinese translations of the English literary work, Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, using two stylometric techniques, bootstrap consensus tree analyses, and bootstrap consensus network analyses. The results show that all the three Chinese translations preserved the style of the original text and that individual translator's style could not be identified based on the entire set of part-of-speech (POS) tags. Furthermore, a feature selection method (the chi-square metric) was used to obtain the top fifteen distinctive POS unigrams and bigrams, and these distinctive features successfully identified translatorial fingerprints across the three translations examined. The findings suggest that translators have their own stylistic choices when translating the same text, but their stylistic differences can only be detected by distinctive features. Our attempt to combine feature selection methods and stylometric techniques may offer new insights into the investigation of translator's stylistic visibility in translation studies.

Abstract:Based on the self-built English translation corpus of Mencius, this study conducts a lexical, syntactical and textual comparative analysis of Mencius English translations by James Legge (1861), Leonard A.Lyall (1932) and D.C.Lau (1970) through adopting a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods and employing Tokenizer, Tree Tagger, WordSmith8.0, AntConc and Readability Analyzer software. By analyzing representative translation examples and the para-text of each translation, this study explores the relationship among the historical background, translator's cultural identity and translation motivation. The results reveal that the translator's style is closely related to the translation strategy determined by the translation purpose rooted in translator's cultural identity in different historical and social backgrounds.The study findings will bring a new perspective for the translator's cultural identity research, contribute to the translator's style study and deepen the understanding of the English translation and overseas dissemination of Mencius with the help of corpus technology.

Abstract:Abstract The core of translation is language conversion, but it should be more of an aesthetic experience, a transformation of different ways of thinking. This paper proposes a neural semantic analysis method for English translation based on text similarity calculation. The technique uses a large-scale corpus to train the vector space model of words, establishes a concept-context matrix through the term-document matrix, and determines each value of the concept vector with a weight according to the literary translation in the knowledge base. The information extraction and evaluation of the English-translated text through semantic similarity calculation provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent analysis of style conversion and linguistic, and aesthetic reproduction of the English-translated text. The study will take the Lin Yutang translation and the Ricardian translation of The Analects of Confucius as an example to develop the analysis of style transformation and reproduction of linguistic beauty of the English-translated text from both lexical and syntactic levels. The results show that the lexical density of Lin Yutang’s translation is 0.5866, while that of Rie Jacob’s translation is 0.5334, with the former significantly larger than the latter. It shows that Lin Yutang’s translation of The Analects of Confucius adopts a naturalization strategy, i.e., To disseminate Chinese culture in a way that is authentic, familiar to English readers, and easy to understand, so as to make his linguistic expression more emotional.

Abstract:Lun Yu, also known as The Analects of Confucius, has been a masterpiece of traditional Chinese culture and has been very influential in China, even in the world. As the influence of The Analects of Confucius grows, its different versions of translation has become a topic of interest and has been discussed by many people. In the process of translating Lun Yu, different famous writers have adopted different translation strategies. This paper takes the English versions of Lun Yu by Ku Hungming and James Legge as examples, aiming to find out the motivations for their respective translation strategies. Firstly, the application of specific translation strategies will be analyzed through specific examples. Secondly, this paper will analyze the reasons why the two translators adopted their respective translation strategies according to the context of different times. Meanwhile, this paper will discuss the role of the English versions of Lun Yu in the diffusion of Chinese culture to the West.

Abstract:Exploring the comparative analysis of translation styles across languages holds great significance for capturing the essence of ancient Chinese classics. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of language models for linguistic examination of ancient Chinese classics, using the cross-language Zuozhuan corpus as a focal point. We utilize the capabilities of five pre-trained language models to compare their effectiveness with the deep learning model Bi-LSTM-CRF in the areas of word segmentation and parts-of-speech tagging. Optimal training results obtained from the models facilitated the completion of word segmentation and parts-of-speech tagging across the entire corpus of ancient Chinese classics. Building on these advancements, this research delves into a meticulous lexical-level scrutiny of the linguistic style evident in ancient Chinese classics and their corresponding English translations. In contrast to the original Chinese text, the contemporary Chinese translation exhibits greater semantic clarity, manifesting a relatively singular phrase function and a heightened diversity in vocabulary combinations. Conversely, the English translation demonstrates a tendency toward simplification. The analysis encompasses facets such as parts of speech distribution, word length variation, lexical richness, and textual density, providing unprecedented insights into the cross-linguistic nuances of these venerable literary works.

And James Legge, Gu Hongming and Arthur Walley’s English translation of Analects is widely spread and highly recognized. Therefore, this paper will take Lectures on China’s Traditional Political Thoughts as an example to study the translation of culture-loaded words in three translated versions of The Analects of Confucius from the eco perspective. Relying on the Chinese ideological and cultural terminology Library under the project of “Chinese ideological and cultural terminology communication project”, this paper mainly combs and sums up the culture-loaded words in The Analects of Confucius respectively translated by James Legge, Gu Hongming, Arthur Waley. Based on the perspective of eco translatology, this paper makes a comparative study on translation methods of different schools from the perspectives of language, culture and communication, so as to improve the academic preciseness and accuracy of the translation.

Abstract:This article has chosen seven Spanish translations of The Analects to conduct comparative research focusing on one culture-specific item, 道 (dao). Subscribed to a descriptive approach based mainly on norms postulated by Toury and Equivalence by Nida, it endeavors to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the main strategies in its translation? 2) What are the possible motivators of translation similarities and differences? This research combines quantitative and qualitative analysis methods based on corpus building. Corpus-based, this study describes the translation of 道 in Classical Chinese and its translation equivalence into Spanish. The findings demonstrated that various strategies and words are used to translate 道. When it functions as a verb, the literal translation is used, and different verbs are employed to express the meaning given the context. Moreover, decisions on verb tense, sentence structure, and grammatical subject also seem to vary significantly across translators. When 道 is used as a noun, translators show different preferences for word choices. Instances for both dynamic and formal equivalence have been observed, pointing out that these two concepts should not be analyzed in isolation, as they stand in a dynamic relationship. Translators also make adaptations to reach adequacy and acceptability in translation. Detailed results are discussed in light of these theories, and this study views translation as a socio, linguistic, cultural, and translator-based activity.
A Comparison of Two Chinese Versions of Red Star Over China from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract:Functionalist Skopos theory holds that the purpose of translation determines the translator’s choice of translation strategies. This theory is widely adopted in translation studies, and it also has instructive significance for the comparative study on different translations of same original text. In Red Star Over China, Edgar Snow described his experiences in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region in the first-person perspective. Chinese scholars have carried out thorough researches on the Chinese translations of Red Star Over China, but they have not paid enough attention to the different translation strategies adopted in different Chinese versions. From the perspective of Skopos theory, this paper studies the differences in translation strategies between Dong Leshan’s version and Wang Tao’s version of Red Star Over China. Dong’s translation applies literal translation for the purpose of faithfulness to the original text, while Wang’s translation is more inclined to liberal translation. Both versions bear some weak points in coherence, fidelity, and over-domestication, which need to be improved in future translations.

Abstract:Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) offers a novel scheme and perspective on the relation between linguistic form and semantic of various sentences. In order to explore the semantic equivalence among homologous translations, the paper analyzes the scenarios of same semantic structures covered by AMR and proposes a framework of variation in homologous translations. In addition, the framework is mapped into the annotation of AMR and used for common semantic characteristics mining in homologous translations. Accordingly AMR semantic structure matching (Smatch) score is applied to machine translation quality evaluation task. Experiments on small scale dataset preliminarily prove the effectiveness of AMR in translation quality evaluation.

Abstract:This paper makes an emotional analysis of readers’ comments on the English version of Life by Lu Yao on Amazon. The research shows that western readers generally have a high degree of acceptance of the unique regional culture of China conveyed in the English version of Life, but they hold negative criticism on the translation of some words. The main reason for readers’ criticism is that the translation does not faithfully convey the original information. Examining the translation and dissemination effects of foreign-translated works from the perspective of readers’ comments is helpful to accurately find out the translation problems existing in foreign-translated literary works and provide reference for the translation and dissemination of literary works in the future.
