Abstract:Jet loop reactors have favorable performance in solid suspension, liquid mixing and mass transfer. The distribution of gas holdup and liquid velocity was measured under semi-batch operation conditions with superficial gas velocities ranging from 0.065 m.s-1 to 0.105 m.s-1. 3D transient CFD-PBM coupled model was utilized to simulate hydrodynamics (especially bubble breakup and coalescence) of the jet loop reactor under experimental conditions. Large bubbles are generated by jetting which significantly enhances liquid circulation. Meanwhile, large bubbles break into small bubbles during rising that leads to the increase of gas holdup along axial position of the riser. Similar processes are shown in the downcomer. Experiments and simulation prove that the size of the sparger zone is remarkably extended due to jetting, and fully developed zones are not observed though the whole reactor.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics in an up flow jet-loop reactor (JLR) is experimentally investigated. The overall gas holdup, radial and axial distributions of local gas holdup and liquid velocity are presented. A modified drift-flux model was developed for correlating the "S-shape" relationship of overall gas holdup and gas velocity. Experiments show that the gas-liquid co-injection mode results in larger gas holdup and liquid circulation velocity than those of the gas jet alone mode. Liquid velocity distribution is more prone to reach the fully developed regime than the gas holdup, and the gas-liquid co-injection promotes the flow development. Comparison of JLR with the conventional bubble column (BC) and airlift reactor (ALR) shows that the JLR has a largest liquid circulation velocity, which is mostly beneficial to liquid mixing and solid suspension. Abstract:Distribution of axial liquid velocity and gas volume fraction in a sequential gas-liquid-solid three phase jet-loop reactor containing small particles with Stokes number less than 1.0 were measured by Pavlov tube and conductivity probe, respectively. A large bubble-small bubble-slurry three phase fluid dynamic model, incorporating the respective consideration of wake acceleration and bubble hindrance effect for large and small bubble phases in the modified drag forces, was developed to simulate the hydrodynamics in a three phase jet-loop reactor. The numerical results of flow filed in the riser and downcomer were in good agreement with the experimental results. The model was used to predict the axial liquid velocity and gas volume fraction in different solid volume fractions. Results showed that the gas volume fraction decreased while the liquid circulation velocity increased slightly with the increase of solid volume fraction, under the considered solid volume fraction range. The reason is that the average bubble diameter increases when solid volume fraction rises, which increases the bubble rise velocity and enhances the accelerated movement of the surrounding fluid.

Abstract:A bi-dispersed bubble model incorporating lateral forces and bubble-induced turbulence is employed to simulate hydrodynamics in an up flow jet-loop reactor (JLR) operated in gas-liquid co-injection mode. In the model the bubble swarm effect on the drag force was differently described for the large and small bubble phases, where the drag force for the large bubble decreases with the gas holdup in accordance with the wake acceleration effect, while for the small bubble the drag force increases with the gas holdup in consideration of the hindrance effect of the bubble swarm. The simulated radial profiles of gas holdup and axial liquid velocity agree with the cold experiments, which shows that the different description of drag forces for the large and small bubbles is reasonable for correctly simulating the effect of superficial gas velocity on liquid circulation velocity. Effects of draft tube position (H-c) and cross-sectional area ratio of riser to downcomer (A(r)/A(d)) are evaluated by model simulation. The results show that with the increase of H-C and A(r)/A(d), both overall gas holdup and liquid circulation velocity reach a maximum at He = 0.06 m and A(r)/A(d) = 0.44, respectively. Recommendatory geometric parameters for the JLR design is: 0 < H-C <0.09 m, 0.4 < Ar/Ad < 0.7. (C) 2018 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Multiphase flow hydrodynamics in a novel gas–liquid–solid jet‐loop reactor (JLR) were experimentally investigated at the macroscales and mesoscales. The chord length distribution was measured by an optical fiber probe and transformed for bubble size distribution through the maximum entropy method. The impacts of key operating conditions (superficial gas and liquid velocity, solid loading) on hydrodynamics at different axial and radial locations were comprehensively investigated. JLR was found to have good solid suspension ability owing to the internal circulation of bubbles and liquid flow. The gas holdup, axial liquid velocity, and bubble velocity increase with gas velocity, while liquid velocity has little influence on them. Compared with the gas–liquid JLRs, solids decrease the gas holdup and liquid circulation, reduces the bubble velocity and delays the flow development due to the enhanced interaction between bubbles and particles (Stokes number >1). Abstract:The axial and radial profiles of the gas holdup and bubble parameters in an external-loop airlift reactor of inner diameter 0.09 m and height 1.8 m were measured with the differential pressure method and dual-tip electrical conductivity probe at different superficial gas velocities.Air and water were used as the gas and liquid phases,respectively.The experimental data of the average and local gas holdups,bubble size and its distribution,bubble rising velocity,bubble frequency and gas-liquid interfacial area were obtained,and were analyzed based on the gas-liquid flow field and bubble-bubble interaction.The local gas holdup was correlated in terms of superficial gas velocity,axial height and radial position based on the experimental data.

Abstract:Specially designed internals were used in a novel two-stage internal-loop airlift reactor to effectively decrease liquid backmixing by analogy with the tanks-in-series concept.The effects of the inter-stage internal type,superficial gas and liquid velocities and gas-liquid separator on the gas holdup and liquid cisculation velocity in each stage were experimentally studied.The results showed that superficial gas velocity had a significant effect on the difference betweeo gas holdups in the riser and the downcomer and liquid circulation velocity in uhe second stage(the top stage),but had a smaller effect on those in the first stage(the bottom stage).The gas holdups both in the riser and the downcomer slightly decreased with an increase in superficial liquid velocity.A mathematical model for predicting liquid circulation velocity was proposed based on the balance between driving and resistance forces,and a good agreement was obtained between the calculated and experimental data.

Abstract:One important challenge in chemical industry, especially for processes of synthesis fuels, is the development of effective three-phase reactors for high pressure and temperature. In the present study, a novel airlift internal-loop reactor (ALR) was proposed and its hydrodynamic behaviors were experimentally studied. The local bubble rise velocity and liquid velocity are measured under different operating conditions. The influence of operating conditions including the superficial gas velocity and solid holdup on the bubble rise velocity and liquid velocity in the riser was studied. A mathematical model was proposed based on the energy balance to describe the multiphase flow characteristics in the internal-loop airlift reactor. The comparison between the calculated and experimental values shows that the proposed model can predict the flow behavior reasonably.

Abstract:Small bubbles and flow uniformity are important for gas–liquid and gas–liquid–solid multiphase reactors. A reactor internal was designed and installed in an external-loop airlift reactor (EL-ALR) to enhance bubble breakup and flow redistribution and improve reactor performance. Hydrodynamic parameters, including local gas holdup, bubble rise velocity, bubble Sauter diameter and liquid velocity were measured. A radial maldistribution index was introduced to describe radial non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic parameters. The influence of the internal on this index was studied. Experimental results show that The effect of the internal is to make the radial profiles of the gas holdup, bubble rise velocity and liquid velocity radially uniform. The bubble Sauter diameter decreases and the bubble size distribution is narrower. With increasing distance away from the internal, the radial profiles change back to be similar to those before contact with it. The internal improves the flow behavior up to a distance of 1.4m.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The classical airlift loop reactor (ALR) has been widely used in petrochemical, biochemical, energy and environmental processes due to such advantages as simple structure, without motional mechanism, easy sealing and low energy consumption. A novel ALR has been designed using forced periodic reversible ventilation, termed an airlift reversible loop reactor (ARLR). RESULTS: Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and experimental validation, the mass transfer characteristics of the ARLR were studied. The simulation results predicted the experimental data well, especially at low ventilation capacity. The oscillation period had significant effects on gas holdup and the mass transfer coefficient of the ARLR. When ventilation capacity was increased from 0.22 to 3.49 vvm, compared with central airlift and annular airlift reactors, ARLR increased the mass transfer coefficient by 931% and 1058%, respectively, according to simulation results, and by 1125% and 1458%, respectively, according to experimental data. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the ARLR could significantly enhance gas holdup and mass transfer coefficient compared with traditional central airlift and annular airlift reactors. Results indicated that the optimum oscillation period decreased with increase of ventilation capacity. ARLR has the potential for application in aerobic fermentation. Abstract:The local hydrodynamic behaviors, including the gas holdup, bubble size and bubble rise velocity were measured in an external loop airlift reactor (EL-ALR) with two types of distributor—porous sinter plate and perforated plate, using an optic fiber probe. The radial and axial evolutions of these parameters and the influence of the gas distributor on the flow hydrodynamics were studied. Core-peaking and wall-peaking radial profiles of the gas holdup were found in the experiments corresponding to different bubble sizes. A mechanism model based on the assumption of the equilibrium of lateral forces acting on a bubble was proposed to interpret the different radial profiles of the gas holdup.

Abstract:<p>Based on newly invented internal loop airlift slurry reactor integrating mixing and separation, hydrodynamics and mass transfer under different solid loadings and superficial gas velocities were systematically investigated, and mixing and mass transfer characteristics were studied. Additionally, some empirical models for these critical parameters are proposed. A phenomenon of internal fluid relay circulations in the riser of the internal loop airlift reactor at the high superficial gas velocity was firstly discovered by visual observation and was then verified both by the picture sequences and theoretical analysis, and some new thoughts for structural optimization were also proposed. It was found that the axial solid concentration deviation can be more than 30% and the solid particles were inclined to exist near the wall. Surprisingly, the particle size distributions were found to be the same in the whole reactor. This slurry reactor will be popular in industry with a further structural optimization.</p>

Abstract:Gas holdup, bubble behavior, interfacial area and gas–liquid mass transfer in a 5m internal-loop airlift reactor with non-Newtonian fluid were studied in the superficial gas velocity (Ug) range of 2–12cm/s. Air and aqueous CMC solutions of 0–0.45wt% were used as the gas and liquid phases, respectively. It was found that increased Ug or CMC concentration led to a wider bubble size distribution and an increase in the bubble Sauter diameter. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient increased with an increase in Ug and a decrease in CMC concentration. In the air–water system, kla/αg was found to be independent of Ug and was 0.21/s, and a constant liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (kl) was found in the heterogeneous regime. However, in the air–CMC solution system, the influences of the superficial gas velocity and liquid viscosity were much more complicated: kla/αg was not constant and was affected by the superficial gas velocity and CMC concentrations; the interfacial area increased with an increase in Ug and a decrease in CMC concentration; kl increased more significantly with increasing Ug, and no obvious trend was found for the influence of CMC concentration on kl.

Abstract:The investigation of hydrodynamic behavior in three-phase external loop airlift reactors is important to their design and scale-up. Pressure difference was used to measure gas holdup and ultrasonic Doppler anemometry was used to measure liquid velocity. Gas holdup, liquid velocity and expansion rate increased with increasing superficial gas velocity. Under the same superficial gas velocity, gas holdup increased with increasing static solid height, and decreased with increasing solid particle diameter.Adding large particles could increase interfacial area, increase gas residual time and intensify mass transfer. Liquid circulation velocity and expansion rate decreased with increasing solid particle diameter and static solid height.Liquid velocity could be controlled in a suitable range by adding particles to improve the performance in airlift loop reactors.

Abstract:In a pilot-scale internal loop airlift reactor with a height of 5.5 m and a main column diameter of 0.484 m, the influence of three gas sparger structures (ladder distributor, tri-nozzle sparger and perforated plate) on the volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa was investigated. It was found that the perforated plate produces the highest gas holdup difference and circulating liquid velocity between the riser and the downcomer. The perforated plate provides the most efficient mass transfer due to the more uniform gas distribution and higher circulating liquid velocity, followed by the ladder distributor and tri-nozzle spargers. Compared with the tri-nozzle sparger, the perforated plate increases the value of kLa by up to 16% at a superficial velocity of 0.15 m/s. Interestingly, the analysis of the liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient kL and specific area a with respect to gas velocity shows that the mass transfer rate is primarily controlled by a. By comparing the predictions of different mass transfer models, the slip velocity model based on penetration theory yields a satisfactory agreement with the experimental results within ±15% error. Meanwhile, empirical correlations regarding gas holdup and kLa were developed and were found to have good consistency with experimental values.

Abstract:This paper studied the relationships of the superficial gas velocity, U_G, the liquid loop velocity, U_L, and the gas hold-up, e_G, in a pilot-scale airlift-external-loop reactor to investigate larger scale effects that do not exist in small reactors. The pilot-scale airlift-external-loop reactor was 2.5 m in height with one riser and two downcomers. The riser inner diameter was 0.47 m and the downcomer inner diameters were 8 cm. For gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid conditions, the effects of U_G on U_L and U_G or U_L on e_G were investigated for different hole orientations and hole numbers in the gas distributors. The results show that U_L and e_G increase linearly with U_G. The increase of e_G with U_L is not obvious, but is higher with an upward gas distributor than with a downward gas distributor. e_G is higher with 500 g active carbon than with 250 g.

A dynamic model for the description of flow behavior in the three-phase internal-loop airlift reactor with large gas recirculation through the downcomer was developed. The model simulates liquid velocity, gas holdup and solid holdup in the riser and the downcomer with satisfactory accuracy.
