Abstract:Jet loop reactors have favorable performance in solid suspension, liquid mixing and mass transfer. The distribution of gas holdup and liquid velocity was measured under semi-batch operation conditions with superficial gas velocities ranging from 0.065 m.s-1 to 0.105 m.s-1. 3D transient CFD-PBM coupled model was utilized to simulate hydrodynamics (especially bubble breakup and coalescence) of the jet loop reactor under experimental conditions. Large bubbles are generated by jetting which significantly enhances liquid circulation. Meanwhile, large bubbles break into small bubbles during rising that leads to the increase of gas holdup along axial position of the riser. Similar processes are shown in the downcomer. Experiments and simulation prove that the size of the sparger zone is remarkably extended due to jetting, and fully developed zones are not observed though the whole reactor.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics in an up flow jet-loop reactor (JLR) is experimentally investigated. The overall gas holdup, radial and axial distributions of local gas holdup and liquid velocity are presented. A modified drift-flux model was developed for correlating the "S-shape" relationship of overall gas holdup and gas velocity. Experiments show that the gas-liquid co-injection mode results in larger gas holdup and liquid circulation velocity than those of the gas jet alone mode. Liquid velocity distribution is more prone to reach the fully developed regime than the gas holdup, and the gas-liquid co-injection promotes the flow development. Comparison of JLR with the conventional bubble column (BC) and airlift reactor (ALR) shows that the JLR has a largest liquid circulation velocity, which is mostly beneficial to liquid mixing and solid suspension. Abstract:Multiphase flow hydrodynamics in a novel gas–liquid–solid jet‐loop reactor (JLR) were experimentally investigated at the macroscales and mesoscales. The chord length distribution was measured by an optical fiber probe and transformed for bubble size distribution through the maximum entropy method. The impacts of key operating conditions (superficial gas and liquid velocity, solid loading) on hydrodynamics at different axial and radial locations were comprehensively investigated. JLR was found to have good solid suspension ability owing to the internal circulation of bubbles and liquid flow. The gas holdup, axial liquid velocity, and bubble velocity increase with gas velocity, while liquid velocity has little influence on them. Compared with the gas–liquid JLRs, solids decrease the gas holdup and liquid circulation, reduces the bubble velocity and delays the flow development due to the enhanced interaction between bubbles and particles (Stokes number >1). Abstract:Distribution of axial liquid velocity and gas volume fraction in a sequential gas-liquid-solid three phase jet-loop reactor containing small particles with Stokes number less than 1.0 were measured by Pavlov tube and conductivity probe, respectively. A large bubble-small bubble-slurry three phase fluid dynamic model, incorporating the respective consideration of wake acceleration and bubble hindrance effect for large and small bubble phases in the modified drag forces, was developed to simulate the hydrodynamics in a three phase jet-loop reactor. The numerical results of flow filed in the riser and downcomer were in good agreement with the experimental results. The model was used to predict the axial liquid velocity and gas volume fraction in different solid volume fractions. Results showed that the gas volume fraction decreased while the liquid circulation velocity increased slightly with the increase of solid volume fraction, under the considered solid volume fraction range. The reason is that the average bubble diameter increases when solid volume fraction rises, which increases the bubble rise velocity and enhances the accelerated movement of the surrounding fluid.

Abstract:Multiphase internal-loop airlift reactor is effective in reducing liquid back-mixing. To further improve the distribution of solid particles in different stages, a novel interstage internal, i.e., a perforated plate with several long tubes, was used to provide a separate flowing path for gas and slurry phases. With this novel internal, a gas layer was formed between the two adjacent stages and had a significant effect on the operation regimes. In this work, the effects of the opening ratio of the internal and superficial gas and liquid velocities on the operation regimes were experimentally studied for both cocurrent and countercurrent flows. The experimental results show that the superficial gas and liquid velocities have significant effects on the operation regimes. The effect of the opening ratio for gas channels on the operation regimes was more significant than that of the opening ratio for liquid channels. Compared with the traditional perforated plate internal, the novel internal showed better performance for operation flexibility. The regime map was obtained from the calculated gas layer height with the mathematical model proposed in our previous work and was in good agreement with the experiential results. The results in this work can provide guidance for design and scaleup of the multistage reactors.

Abstract:Specially designed internals were used in a novel two-stage internal-loop airlift reactor to effectively decrease liquid backmixing by analogy with the tanks-in-series concept.The effects of the inter-stage internal type,superficial gas and liquid velocities and gas-liquid separator on the gas holdup and liquid cisculation velocity in each stage were experimentally studied.The results showed that superficial gas velocity had a significant effect on the difference betweeo gas holdups in the riser and the downcomer and liquid circulation velocity in uhe second stage(the top stage),but had a smaller effect on those in the first stage(the bottom stage).The gas holdups both in the riser and the downcomer slightly decreased with an increase in superficial liquid velocity.A mathematical model for predicting liquid circulation velocity was proposed based on the balance between driving and resistance forces,and a good agreement was obtained between the calculated and experimental data.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of a three-phase internal-loop airlift reactor with large particles was experimentally investigated.Effects of superficial gas velocity and solid concentration on the expanded bed height,circulation liquid velocity and distribution of solid holdup were studied.The results suggest that the flow in the reactors can be divided into three regimes,namely the fixed bed regime,fluidized bed regime and circulating fluidized bed regime.The flow character in each regime is quite different.Both the minimum fluidization gas velocity and the minimum circulation gas velocity increase significantly with the increase in solid concentration.A mathematical model based on the existing model for a three-phase fluidized bed and the characters of the airlift reactor was proposed to predict the minimum fluidization gas velocity and the minimum circulation gas velocity in the three-phase airlift reactor,and a good agreement between the calculated and measured values was obtained.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics such as liquid velocity, gas holdup and gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient in the riser and downcomer of the gas-liquid-solid three-phase internal loop airlift reactors with manometer solid particles were investigated. A mathematical model for the description of flow behavior and gas-liquid mass transfer of those reactors was also developed. The predicted results of this model agreed well with the experimental data.

Abstract:The investigation of hydrodynamic behavior in three-phase external loop airlift reactors is important to their design and scale-up. Pressure difference was used to measure gas holdup and ultrasonic Doppler anemometry was used to measure liquid velocity. Gas holdup, liquid velocity and expansion rate increased with increasing superficial gas velocity. Under the same superficial gas velocity, gas holdup increased with increasing static solid height, and decreased with increasing solid particle diameter.Adding large particles could increase interfacial area, increase gas residual time and intensify mass transfer. Liquid circulation velocity and expansion rate decreased with increasing solid particle diameter and static solid height.Liquid velocity could be controlled in a suitable range by adding particles to improve the performance in airlift loop reactors.

Abstract:One important challenge in chemical industry, especially for processes of synthesis fuels, is the development of effective three-phase reactors for high pressure and temperature. In the present study, a novel airlift internal-loop reactor (ALR) was proposed and its hydrodynamic behaviors were experimentally studied. The local bubble rise velocity and liquid velocity are measured under different operating conditions. The influence of operating conditions including the superficial gas velocity and solid holdup on the bubble rise velocity and liquid velocity in the riser was studied. A mathematical model was proposed based on the energy balance to describe the multiphase flow characteristics in the internal-loop airlift reactor. The comparison between the calculated and experimental values shows that the proposed model can predict the flow behavior reasonably.

Abstract:Local hydrodynamics of a gas–liquid–solid system, such as bubble circulation regime, gas holdup, liquid velocity and axial profile of solid concentration, are studied in a two-stage internal loop airlift reactor. Empirical correlations for gas holdup and liquid velocity are proposed to ease the reactor design and scale-up. Different bubble circulation regimes were displayed in the first (lower) and second (upper) stages. Increasing superficial gas velocity and solid loading can promote regime transition of the second stage, and the gas holdup of the second stage is higher than that of the lower stage. In addition, the effects of solid loading on bubble behaviour are experimentally investigated for each stage. It is found that bubble size in the downcomer decreases with the presence of solid particles, and bubble size distribution widens under higher superficial gas velocity and lower solid loading.

Abstract:Detailed local three-phase hydrodynamic parameters, namely, the liquid velocity, bubble rise velocity, and gas holdup, were obtained for an external-loop airlift reactor using a fiber-optic probe and laser Doppler anemometry techniques. The radial and axial evolutions of these parameters and the effect of the solid fraction on the flow hydrodynamics were studied. The experiments showed that the bubble size has a large influence on the evolutions of these parameters because of radial forces acting on the bubbles. Bubble coalescence prevails near the distributor, while bubble breakup is more important in the fully developed flow. The liquid velocity and gas holdup decrease and the bubble rise velocity increases as the solid fraction increases.

Abstract:<p>Based on newly invented internal loop airlift slurry reactor integrating mixing and separation, hydrodynamics and mass transfer under different solid loadings and superficial gas velocities were systematically investigated, and mixing and mass transfer characteristics were studied. Additionally, some empirical models for these critical parameters are proposed. A phenomenon of internal fluid relay circulations in the riser of the internal loop airlift reactor at the high superficial gas velocity was firstly discovered by visual observation and was then verified both by the picture sequences and theoretical analysis, and some new thoughts for structural optimization were also proposed. It was found that the axial solid concentration deviation can be more than 30% and the solid particles were inclined to exist near the wall. Surprisingly, the particle size distributions were found to be the same in the whole reactor. This slurry reactor will be popular in industry with a further structural optimization.</p>

Abstract:Small bubbles and flow uniformity are important for gas–liquid and gas–liquid–solid multiphase reactors. A reactor internal was designed and installed in an external-loop airlift reactor (EL-ALR) to enhance bubble breakup and flow redistribution and improve reactor performance. Hydrodynamic parameters, including local gas holdup, bubble rise velocity, bubble Sauter diameter and liquid velocity were measured. A radial maldistribution index was introduced to describe radial non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic parameters. The influence of the internal on this index was studied. Experimental results show that The effect of the internal is to make the radial profiles of the gas holdup, bubble rise velocity and liquid velocity radially uniform. The bubble Sauter diameter decreases and the bubble size distribution is narrower. With increasing distance away from the internal, the radial profiles change back to be similar to those before contact with it. The internal improves the flow behavior up to a distance of 1.4m.

Abstract:Airlift reactors are one of the most commonly used gas–liquid reactors in industry. The bubble flow regime, gas holdup, and bubble size are vital for mass transfer and chemical reaction in an airlift reactor. To improve the reactor performance, this study suggests a two-stage internal loop airlift reactor assembly with a diamond-shaped guide baffle. The hydrodynamic parameters, volumetric mass transfer coefficient, and the CO2 removal efficiency in the airlift reactor are measured. The effect of the guide baffle on the bubble flow regime, bubble size, gas holdup, mass transfer coefficient, and CO2 removal efficiency is investigated. Compared with a regular airlift reactor, the proposed airlift reactor features an increase in global gas holdup and volumetric mass transfer coefficients of up to 31.6 and 87.9%, respectively. Additionally, the CO2 removal efficiency increases in the airlift reactor assembly with the guide baffle.

Abstract:The multistage internal airlift loop reactor (MIALR) has shown promising application prospects in gas–liquid–solid reaction systems. However, traditional MIALRs have a global circulation with strong interstage liquid-phase exchange. This paper proposes a staggered multistage internal airlift loop reactor (SMIALR) that incorporates special guide elements to create a staggered flow. Both experiments and computational fluid dynamics-population balance model simulations were conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic performances of MIALR and SMIALR. The results demonstrate that SMIALR exhibits a local circulation at each stage. Bubbles have a longer residence time in SMIALR, resulting in a 28.35%–55.54% increase in gas holdup and a 7.27%–13.69% increase in volumetric mass transfer coefficient. The gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient of SMIALR was improved by increasing the gas–liquid interfacial area. Additionally, the radial distribution of solids was found to be more uniform. This study offers insights for optimizing MIALR and provides a theoretical foundation for the design and scale-up of SMIALR.

Abstract:A complete mass transfer model was established for an internal loop airlift reactor. All sections of the reactor, including bottom, riser, top, and downcomer, were taken into account. A numerical method was developed to solve the mass transfer model. The effectiveness of the model was validated by experimental measurements. Based on numerical results of the model, the dynamical mass transfer process in the reactor was analyzed in detail. Some mass transfer characteristics of the airlift reactor were revealed. The results indicated that the proposed model well predicted the mass transfer in the internal loop airlift reactor.
