Abstract:In pen industry, ball pens are becoming more and more popular and its market is growing bigger. However, the technology concerned with ball pens, especially gel ink ball pens, is not Mature yet. In this paper, several factors influence the performance of ball pens are taken into account. Such factors include: the material of the ball, the clearance, the bowl holds the ball and the speed of writing. The system of providing ink and flowing ink are also calculated. Meanwhile, a model to describe the process is made. The results Calculated by the model basically fit the actual instance.

Abstract:The colloidal forming process based on gel-casting was applied for preparing microbeads of ceramics, improving the breakdown strength of rutile capacitor, developing the thin-wall rutile tube for ozone generator, and producing the refractory nozzle of zirconia (ZrO2) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The microbeads of ceramics were used as grinding media, gel-pen-ball and healthcare product with far infrared function for human body. Owing to the low-cost associated with the production of the gel-beads as well as because of its superior properties, they have been widely used and marketed.When compared with the extrusion forming, the breakdown strength of rutile capacitor prepared by gel-casting was improved greatly. The rutile ceramics with high dielectric constant and high breakdown strength have been used in thin-wall tube of ozone generator.ZrO2 refractory nozzle prepared by gel-casting has a high melting point above 2680 degrees C and a good thermal shock resistance to withstand the temperature rising from the room temperature to 2200 degrees C in several seconds. Hence, it is considered as a suitable material for making the nozzle for precision casting of Cu-Cr molten alloy.When compared with die pressing, gel-casting can provide a more homogenous microstructure as well as better piezoelectric property of the PZT samples. By using the same sintering procedure, gelcast samples were observed to exhibit slightly stronger piezoelectric effects than the die pressed ones. This may be attributed to both density difference and pore size.

Abstract:Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is a superhard tool material capable of resisting harsh tool-work interactions when machining hard workpiece materials due to its superior thermo-mechanical properties. Zirconia ceramic represents one type of biomedical-grade restorative material being extensively utilized in clinical dental prosthodontics owing to its outstanding biocompatibility and excellent esthetical effects. The present paper aims to carry out a series of milling experiments against the zirconia ceramics when using the PCD tools. The main objective of this work lies in evaluating the wear behavior of PCD tools following the milling of zirconia ceramics. Two types of zirconia specimens, including the pre-sintered and fully-sintered 3Y-TZP ceramics, were examined. The tool performance was assessed in terms of the wear development, and the worn tool surface morphologies were characterized using both the digital microscope and the surface topography measuring instrument. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms governing the wear progression of PCD tools were revealed with respect to different sintered ceramic specimens.

Abstract:Ceramic microbeads are increasingly being used for wear applications, especially for milling ultrafine powder. Research on friction and wear behavior of ceramics has become a more and more important subject in the area. In this paper, three kinds of ceramic microbeads ––mullite-zirconia, zirconium silicate and 95 alumina microbeads which were produced by Colloidal injection moulding technique were tested by SRV high temperature friction and wear test system, which the working condition of the ceramic microbeads as grinding media can be simulated to a certainty. The tests were done under dry friction and water lubrication respectively. Then their worn surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Through these experiments, the tribological properties and wear mechanisms of the self-wearing ceramic microbeads were investigated.

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical properties of CeO2/Y2O3/ZrO2 ceramics were investigated using ultrafine CeO2/Y2O3/ZrO2 powder as the starting material. The structures of CeO2/Y2O3/ZrO2 containing 8~12mol% CeO2 were composed of tetragonal phases. They exhibited an extremely high bending strength (950 MPa) and fracture toughness (12MPa·m1/2). The structural details of CeO2/Y2O3/ ZrO2 were studied by TEM, SEM and XRD. The effects of the structure on mechanical properties were discussed. Plungers and ball valves by the CeO2/Y2O3/ZrO2 ceramics have higher wear resistance and corrosion resistance than metal. Their service life is about 6 ~ 10 fold more than that of metal.

Abstract:The composite zirconium silicate microbeads with different pretreating process were developed in this paper. The wear loss of these microbeads was compared by testing of agitation mill. These microstructures with different micro-pores were compared by scanning electron microscopy. The pore size was found have obvious influences on the mechanism of the wear. Some solutions were proposed to overcome the micro-pores in the zirconium silicate composite microbeads.
Effect of forming strategy on surface morphology and properties of zirconia ceramics formed by laser powder bed fusion

Abstract:This paper investigates the effects of different forming processes on the surface morphology and dimensional accuracy of zirconia ceramics, and selects the optimal forming process for mechanical property analysis. A laboratory-built ceramic laser 3D printer was used to carry out the forming experiments on the specimens. Under the condition that only the forming process of the experimental target is changed, the effects of powder layering process, scanning spacing and scanning strategy on the surface morphology and properties of zirconia ceramics are investigated. The use of two powder spreading and scanning forming processes in the sample forming process effectively improved the forming defects of zirconia ceramics caused by powder splattering, and the zirconia ceramics had a better forming effect. Under this condition, the dimensional accuracy of the specimens increases and then decreases with the decrease of the scanning spacing, where the highest dimensional accuracy is obtained when the scanning spacing is 0.158 mm; among different scanning strategies, the best surface morphology is obtained by forming specimens with the island scanning strategy. In addition, the mechanical properties of the ceramics formed from zirconia showed that the Young's modulus and Vickers hardness of the samples increased by approximately 53.6 % and 15.7 %, respectively, compared to the traditional forming process.

Abstract:The 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) is regarded as a superior bioceramic being extensively used in modern denture restoration. However, the material possesses extremely poor machinability and are prone to serious cracking and failure formation due to its exceptionally high hardness and inherent brittleness. Hard milling is a feasible strategy to shape fully-sintered 3Y-TZP to desired quality and target dimensions. The present paper aims to study the milling behaviors and mechanisms of 3Y-TZP ceramics by using superhard PCD and PCBN tools. The fundamental milling responses, including cutting forces, temperatures, and surface morphologies, were all examined. The parametric effects on the 3Y-TZP machinability outputs were addressed. A particular focus is placed on comparing the cutting performances of different tools in milling 3Y-TZP. It is found that the PCD tool outperforms the PCBN tool from the perspective of reducing cutting forces, specific cutting energy consumption, and milling temperatures. To get smooth surface morphologies with minimal damage, the spindle speed lower than 5000 rpm and the feed per tooth lower than 9 μm/z should be adopted for the PCD tools. However, under large milling parameters, the PCBN tools show advantages in ensuring the stability of machined surface quality for 3Y-TZP ceramics over the PCD ones.

Abstract:Monodisperse ZrO2 ceramic beads with size larger than 1 mm have been prepared by an improved micro‐droplet spray forming process, through which a compressor and a dispenser were employed to produce droplets continuously. Furthermore, the slurry recipe and drying temperature have been optimized to enhance the sphericity and smoothness of the beads. The sintered ZrO2 ceramic beads present promising mechanical performance, including a relative density of 84.6 %, a crush strength of 256.2 ± 36.6 N as well as a Vickers hardness of 1344.4 ± 58.3 HV. Such procedure reveals great potential in mass production of ceramic beads.

Abstract:Ceramic materials have good mechanical properties, such as high hardness, good wear resistance and elevated-temperature anti-oxidation. So, Ceramic materials are widely applied not only in the field of aeronautics and astronautics, building and mechanics in modern technology, but also in the field of the cutting tool materials. Ceramic tool materials are widely used in the dry cutting and high speed cutting. The preparation of ceramic tool materials includes powdering, forming, hot-press fabrication and machining process. A green compact before sintering is a porous packing of loose powder that is held together by weak surface bonds. The individual particles fabricated together to form a dense, strong monolithic part by sintering. The driving force for the sintering is the reduction in surface free energy of the particle. This reduction is performed by diffusion transport of material. Many factors affected the process of material transport and the exhalation of pores. Therefore, the hot-press fabrication is a very complicated process in which the compact formed of fine powder materials fabricated at the temperature below the melting point of the main constituent for the purpose of gaining the enough strength of the compact by bonding particles together. The hot-press fabrication is a key process, which governs the mechanical properties of the ceramic tool materials as well as the components and content.

Abstract:Zirconia(5wt.%Y2O3) and Alumina powder are used as theraw material,Zirconia/Alumina Ceramics composite was prepared successfully by gelcasty.Zeta potential,the granulairty distribution,rheological behaviors of the Suspension and The microstructure of green bodies and sintered samples was measured and discussed.The result shown that the YSZ/Al2O3 composite ceramics,which is the 50Vol.% suspension,was prepared at the pH value about 9～10,SD-00 as disperser which addition amount is 1.0wt.%,and the optimum proportion is 70wt.%ZrO2(5wt.%Y2O3) and 30wt.% Al2O3.

Abstract:Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics were successfully fabricated by the dry pressing method with different size (1.8–20μm) and amount (2–60vol.%) of mono-dispersed poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) micro-balls. Different PMMA additions with different size and amount were investigated to achieve optimal thermal and mechanical properties. With increases of the amount of PMMA, the porosity of porous YSZ ceramics ranges from 7.29% to 51.6%, the flexural strength increases firstly and then decreases, and the thermal conductivity decreases continuously. With decreases of the diameter of PMMA micro-balls, the mean pore size and thermal conductivity of porous YSZ ceramics decrease, and the flexural strength of porous YSZ ceramics with same porosity increases firstly and then decreases. The porous YSZ ceramics with a higher porosity (18.44±1.24%), the highest flexural strength (106.88±3.2179MPa) and low thermal conductivity (1.105±0.15W/mK) can be obtained when the particle diameter and the amount of PMMA are 5μm and 20vol.%, respectively.

Abstract:Injection moldings of three types of ultra-fine zirconia powder were investigated. It was demonstrated that powder characteristics involving particle size, particle size distribution, particle shape and specific surface area significantly affect the optimal compositions of binders and ceramic powders, and the properties of sintered compacts. Investigation of the injection molding variables showed that an excessive barrel-deposited value may easily lead to defects in the debound and sintered bodies. It was also demonstrated that the microstructure of a sintered body can be affected by heating rates influencing grain growth, and that suitable heating rates to the high temperature sintering stage for the three powders are different.

Abstract:With the increasing application of ceramic structural parts, how to realize the ductile cutting of ceramics and high-quality machining of ceramic structural parts have become an important research direction. In this paper, the micromilling of fully sintered zirconia ceramics is studied using customized PCD end mills with three different rake angles. The critical thickness for microcutting of ceramics during the micromilling process is theoretically analyzed and experimentally identified. Then, the ductile cutting of ceramic materials is to be realized by controlling the key cutting parameter (feed per tooth f z) considering the critical cutting thickness. Under the condition of ductile cutting, the high-aspect-ratio vortex curved thin walls of fully sintered zirconia ceramics are successfully fabricated. Furthermore, the tool wear of the customized PCD end mill is analyzed. The tool geometric parameters that are beneficial to ensure both ductile cutting and high tool life are identified.

Abstract:Y2O3-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) ceramics with high-performance were prepared for dental application by use of the micro-emulsion and two-step sintering method. The crystal phase, morphology, and microstructure of the reaction products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD results show that the ceramics mainly consist of tetragonal zirconia. Physical and mechanical properties test results show that the bending strength, fracture toughness, and the density of full sintered Y-TZP ceramics are 1150 MPa, 5.53 MPa·m1/2, and 6.08 g/cm3, respectively, which suggest that the material is relatively suitable for dental restoration. The dental base crown machined with this material by CAD/CAM system exhibits a verisimilitude configuration and the material's expansion coefficient well matches that of the glaze. These results further indicate that the product can be used as a promising new ceramic material to fabricate dental base crowns and bridges.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the microstructure and mechanical behavior of polymer-infiltrated zirconia ceramics as a function of pre-sintering temperature (1000-1150 degrees C).Methods: Polymer-infiltrated zirconia ceramics were prepared by combining the porous zirconia networks and polymer through infiltration and polymerization. XRD was employed to determine phase structure. The microstructure and fracture mechanism were observed by SEM. Flexural strength and fracture toughness were measured by three-point bending method and single-edge-notched beam method, respectively. A nanoindentation system was employed to determine elastic modulus and hardness.Results: Different porosities and polymer contents can be obtained by tuning the pre-sintered temperature of zirconia ceramic precursors. Zirconia network porosity varies from 46.3% to 34.7% and the relevant polymer content ranges from 18.4 wt.% to 12.3 wt.% when the pre-sintered temperature is set from 1000 degrees C to 1150 degrees C. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, hardness, and elastic modulus values of the specimen pre- sintered at 1150 degrees C are 240.9 MPa, 3.69 MPa m(1/2), 3.1 GPa, and 58.8 GPa, respectively.Conclusion: The pre- sintering temperature has a significant effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of polymer-infiltrated zirconia ceramics and the optimal pre- sintering temperature is 1150 degrees C.Clinical significance: Specimen pre-sintered at 1150 degrees C shows tooth-like mechanical properties, suggesting a promising restorative material in dental clinic. Improving wettability, antibacterial and tribological behaviors of zirconia ceramics through surface texturing

Abstract:3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) ceramics are promising restorative materials being extensively used for fabricating dental prosthodontics. However, peri-implant inflammation and the severe abrasive wear on occlusive natural teeth are two critical problems in the clinical application of zirconia dentures. The paper aims to improve the antibacterial and tribological performance of 3Y-TZP ceramics through laser surface texturing. Three types of surface textures, including micro-honeycombs, micro-composite grids, and micro-grooves, were fabricated onto the zirconia specimens. The effects of different microtextures on the surface behaviors, including wettability, bacteria adhesion, and wear behavior, of 3Y-TZP ceramics were rigorously studied. The results indicate that the introduction of microtextures can change the solid-liquid contact of the zirconia surface, thus affecting its wettability. Wettability is a decisive factor that determinines the antibacterial behavior of textured zirconia ceramics. A hydrophobic surface is more conducive to inhibiting the adhesion, extension, reproduction of bacteria and thus achieves a superior antibacterial performance. The examined microtextures yield the improvement of wear resistance for the zirconia ceramics, but their performances depend on the texture density and the structural strength. The results obtained can provide technical guidance for the design and application of microtextures in the restorative dental fields.

Abstract:To achieve high efficiency and low damage processing of ZrO 2 ceramic ball valves, a method for the cup-shaped composite grinding wheel of ultrasonic vibration grinding system was proposed. Based on Mindlin's thick plate theory and cylinder longitudinal vibration theory, a cup-shaped composite grinding wheel including the stepped rod and cup tool head was designed. The theoretical error is within 4%. The influence of the length of the small end of the stepped rod and the diameter of the grinding wheel on the resonance frequency and ultrasonic amplitude was explored by the finite element method (FEM), and the structural parameters of the cup-shaped composite grinding wheel were optimized. The prototype verified that the error between the resonant frequency and the design frequency of the two kinds of cup-shaped composite grinding wheels after matching with the transducer was within 2%, and the maximum amplitude stable output was up to 8 μm. The ultrasonic grinding experiment of the ZrO 2 ceramic ball valves was carried out. The results showed that ultrasonic grinding reduced the maximum height difference of the workpiece surface, reduced by 28% compared with conventional grinding (CG). The surface roughness was reduced to meet the actual processing requirements. The edges of the workpiece appeared serrated structure and micro-crushing phenomenon compared with CG, which may involve from low stiffness and suitable grinding parameters, especially the rotation speed limit of the fourth axis used for the workpiece rotation.

Abstract:Microelectrochemical systems (MEMSs) have important applications in electronic information, aerospace, national defense and other fields. The microhemispherical concave die is the manufacturing foundation for the MEMS system. To clarify the forming mechanism of microhemispherical concave dies machined by microultrasonic machining with ceramic whole ball tools, a material removal model was presented. Furthermore, the kinetic energy model of a spherical abrasive under the action of microultrasonic and whole ball ceramic tools was also established. The model of the brittle-plastic transition removal mode is correlated with the kinetic energy of the abrasive model. The surface morphology of miniature molds exhibits significant variations attributed to the altered material removal mode, the removal mechanism was analyzed. The theoretical model is verified by experiments. Experiments were performed with lower and higher viscosity polishing fluids. The surface roughness of the plastic removal area in each group was 96.4 and 60.1 nm. Due to the high viscosity polishing fluid eliminating some of the cavitation phenomena, the overall surface quality is improved; hence, the surface roughness decreases by 37.6% under the same processing conditions. In the low-viscosity experimental group, the surface roughness was 113.61, 302.28 and 367.24 nm, respectively. The experimental verification confirmed that variations in surface morphology occur, even with the same removal mode applied at different locations on the microconcave die. The reasons for the surface roughness variation in different areas of the microconcave die are analyzed and reveal the influence of ultrasonic cavitation on the material removal mode in microultrasonic machining.

Abstract:In this study, we come up with a new sol-gel approach to prepare ZTA ceramic particles. Alginate was used as gelatinizer and special-shaped ZTA ceramic particles green bodies were made. After forming process, ZTA ceramic particles green bodies were prepared in different ball milling times and different reaction solution concentration and then sintered at different temperatures. The results shows that when the green body were prepared for 10 h ball milling and 0.5 mol/L reaction solution concentration, when sintered at 1400 °C, the ZTA ceramic particles has the best performance. Phase composition analyses revealed that ZTA ceramic particles by Alginate sol-gel method were mainly α-Al 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 . SEM results and the face elements analyzation showed that the above sintered ZTA ceramic particles have the fine grain size and confirm the excellent performance.
