Abstract:Let G be an even orthogonal or unitary group over a number field. Based on the same observation used in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1705.10106" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1705.10106">arXiv:1705.10106</a>, we prove the Arthur's multiplicity formula for the generic part of the automorphic discrete spectrum of G by using the theta lift. We also consider a class of non-generic A-parameters and obtain a multiplicity formula in this case. In particular, we obtain a description of the full automorphic discrete spectrum of even orthogonal or unitary groups with Witt index less or equal to one.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:We consider determinants of Wronskian type whose entries are multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a path connecting two multi-indices. By assuming that the weight functions form an algebraic Chebyshev (AT) system, we show that the polynomials represented by the Wronskians keep a constant sign in some cases, while in some other cases oscillatory behavior appears, which generalizes classical results for orthogonal polynomials due to Karlin and Szeg\H{o}. There are two applications of our results. The first application arises from the observation that the $m$-th moment of the average characteristic polynomials for multiple orthogonal polynomial ensembles can be expressed as a Wronskian of the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. Hence, it is straightforward to obtain the distinct behavior of the moments for odd and even $m$ in a special multiple orthogonal ensemble - the AT ensemble. As the second application, we derive some Tur\'an type inequalities for multiple Hermite and multiple Laguerre polynomials (of two kinds). Finally, we study numerically the geometric configuration of zeros for the Wronskians of these multiple orthogonal polynomials. We observe that the zeros have regular configurations in the complex plane, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:We give a short proof of a strong form of Weyl's law for $\text{SO}(N)$ using well known facts of the theory of modular forms. The exponent of the error term is sharp when the rank is at least~$4$. We also discuss the cases with smaller rank improving previous results.

Abstract:We study Kloosterman sums on the orthogonal groups $SO_{3,3}$ and $SO_{4,2}$, associated to short elements of their respective Weyl groups. An explicit description for these sums is obtained in terms of multi-dimensional exponential sums. These are bounded by a combination of methods from algebraic geometry and $p$-adic analysis.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:It is shown that a transformation in the special orthogonal group SO(V) of a nondefective quadratic space over a field K is bireflectional (product of 2 involutions) if and only if it is reversible (conjugate to its inverse). Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then all irreducible complex representations of $G$ by be realized over the real numbers if and only if every element of $G$ may be written as a product of two involutions in $G$. This follows from our result that if $q$ is a power of $2$, then all irreducible complex representations of the orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be realized over the real numbers. We also obtain generating functions for the sums of degrees of several sets of unipotent characters of finite orthogonal groups, and we obtain a twisted version of our main result for a broad family of finite classical groups.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.
The geometry of orthogonal groups over finite fields

Abstract:Preface This lecture note is based on the lectures given at Kyushu University in 1994 and at Ateneo de Manila University in 1995. In these lectures I presented the theory of quadratic forms over finite fields. The emphasis is placed on geometric and combinatorial objects, rather than the orthogonal group itself. Our goal is to introduce dual polar spaces as distance-transitive graphs in a self contained way. Prerequisites are linear algebra, and finite fields. In the later part of the lecture, familiarity with counting the number of subspaces of a vector space over a finite field is helpful. This lecture note is not intended as a full account of dual polar spaces. It merely treats those of type D n (q), B n (q) and 2 D n (q). One can treat other types, namely, those coming from symplectic groups and unitary groups, in a uniform manner, but I decided to restrict our attention to the above three types in order to save time. Once the reader finishes this note, he/she should be able to learn the other cases with ease. A motivation of writing this note, as well as giving the lecture, is to make the reader get acquainted with nontrivial examples of distance-transitive graphs. I consider Ham-ming graphs and Johnson graphs trivial, as one can establish their distance-transitivity without any special knowledge. The book by Brouwer–Cohen–Neumaier [2] seems too advanced for the beginning students, while other books on the classical groups and their geometries are oriented toward group theory. I hope this lecture note serves as a starting point for the reader to further study of distance-transitive and distance-regular graphs. The presentation of this lecture note is strictly toward an introduction of dual polar spaces of type D n (q), B n (q) and 2 D n (q). I have tried to throw away whatever unnecessary, to make it short. The Witt's extension theorem is included in the appendix for the sake of completeness. This fundamental theorem will not be used in the main text. This lecture note was completed while the author was visiting Ateneo de Manila University, under a grant from JSPS–DOST. Abstract:For $K$ an infinite field of characteristic other than two, consider the action of the special orthogonal group $\operatorname{SO}_t(K)$ on a polynomial ring via copies of the regular representation. When $K$ has characteristic zero, Boutot's theorem implies that the invariant ring has rational singularities; when $K$ has positive characteristic, the invariant ring is $F$-regular, as proven by Hashimoto using good filtrations. We give a new proof of this, viewing the invariant ring for $\operatorname{SO}_t(K)$ as a cyclic cover of the invariant ring for the corresponding orthogonal group; this point of view has a number of useful consequences, for example it readily yields the $a$-invariant and information on the Hilbert series. Indeed, we use this to show that the $h$-vector of the invariant ring for $\operatorname{SO}_t(K)$ need not be unimodal.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a definite special orthogonal group over a totally real number field $F$. The work of Arthur associates Galois representations to automorphic representations of $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$ under certain conditions. In this article, we apply the method of Wiles and Taylor-Wiles to $G$ and establish minimal modularity lifting theorems. This is based on a careful study of smooth representations of and Hecke algebras on $G(F_v)$ where $G$ is split at $v$.

Abstract:We prove a higher-dimensional Chevalley restriction theorem for orthogonal groups, which was conjectured by Chen and Ngo for reductive groups. In characteristic p > 2, we also prove a weaker statement. In characteristic 0, the theorem implies that the categorical quotient of a commuting scheme by the diagonal adjoint action of the group is integral and normal. Abstract:A group is $\frac{3}{2}$-generated if every non-identity element is contained in a generating pair. A conjecture of Breuer, Guralnick and Kantor from 2008 asserts that a finite group is $\frac{3}{2}$-generated if and only if every proper quotient of the group is cyclic, and recent work of Guralnick reduces this conjecture to almost simple groups. In this paper, we prove a stronger form of the conjecture for almost simple symplectic and odd-dimensional orthogonal groups. More generally, we study the uniform spread of these groups, obtaining lower bounds and related asymptotics. This builds on earlier work of Burness and Guest, who established the conjecture for almost simple linear groups.
