Abstract:A characterization is given for the factorizations of almost simple groups with a solvable factor. It turns out that there are only several infinite families of these nontrivial factorizations, and an almost simple group with such a factorization cannot have socle exceptional Lie type or orthogonal of minus type. The characterization is then applied to study s s -arc-transitive Cayley graphs of solvable groups, leading to a striking corollary that, except for cycles, a non-bipartite connected 3 3 -arc-transitive Cayley graph of a finite solvable group is necessarily a normal cover of the Petersen graph or the Hoffman-Singleton graph.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group. First we generalize a result by Manz and Wolf about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. Then we use this result to find bounds for the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group.

Abstract:The complete classification of the finite simple groups that are $(2,3)$-generated is a problem which is still open only for orthogonal groups. Here, we construct $(2, 3)$-generators for the finite odd-dimensional orthogonal groups $\Omega_{2k+1}(q)$, $k\geq 4$. As a byproduct we also obtain $(2,3)$-generators for $\Omega_{4k}^+(q)$ with $k\geq 3$ and $q$ odd, and for $\Omega_{4k+2}^\pm(q)$ with $k\geq 4$ and $q\equiv \pm 1 \pmod 4$.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then all irreducible complex representations of $G$ by be realized over the real numbers if and only if every element of $G$ may be written as a product of two involutions in $G$. This follows from our result that if $q$ is a power of $2$, then all irreducible complex representations of the orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be realized over the real numbers. We also obtain generating functions for the sums of degrees of several sets of unipotent characters of finite orthogonal groups, and we obtain a twisted version of our main result for a broad family of finite classical groups.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite irreducible solvable subgroup of an orthogonal group $O(V,Q)$ with $\dim V$ odd, then $G$ preserves an orthogonal decomposition of $V$ into $1$-spaces. In particular $G$ is monomial. This generalizes a theorem of Rod Gow.

Abstract:We show that factorization systems, both strict and orthogonal, can be equivalently described as double categories satisfying certain properties. This provides conceptual reasons for why the category of sets and partial maps or the category of small categories and cofunctors admit orthogonal factorization systems. The theory also gives an explicit description of various lax morphism classifiers and explains why they admit strict factorization systems.

Abstract:We develop cycle index generating functions for orthogonal groups in even characteristic, and give some enumerative applications. A key step is the determination of the values of the complex linear-Weil characters of the finite symplectic group, and their inductions to the general linear group, at unipotent elements. We also define and study several natural probability measures on integer partitions.

Abstract:In this paper we study the BM quasi-Hermitian varieties introduced in [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmàros, On quasi-Hermitian Varieties, J. Combin. Des. 20 (2012) 433-447.] in characteristc $2$ and dimension $3$. After a brief investigation of their combinatorial properties, we first show that all of these varieties are projectively equivalent in non-zero even characteristic, exhibiting a behavior which is strikingly different from what happens in odd characteristic, see [A. Aguglia, L. Giuzzi, On the equivalence of certain quasi-Hermitian varieties, J. Combin. Des. 1-15 (2022)]. This completes the classification project started in that paper. Next, by using previous results, we explicitly determine and investigate the structure of the full collineation group stabilizing these varieties. Finally, as a byproduct of our investigation, we also construct and a family of simple orthogonal arrays $OA(q^5,q^4,q,2)$ with entries in ${\mathbb F}_q$ where $q$ is a power of $2$.

Abstract:Let G be an even orthogonal or unitary group over a number field. Based on the same observation used in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1705.10106" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1705.10106">arXiv:1705.10106</a>, we prove the Arthur's multiplicity formula for the generic part of the automorphic discrete spectrum of G by using the theta lift. We also consider a class of non-generic A-parameters and obtain a multiplicity formula in this case. In particular, we obtain a description of the full automorphic discrete spectrum of even orthogonal or unitary groups with Witt index less or equal to one.

Abstract:We study Kloosterman sums on the orthogonal groups $SO_{3,3}$ and $SO_{4,2}$, associated to short elements of their respective Weyl groups. An explicit description for these sums is obtained in terms of multi-dimensional exponential sums. These are bounded by a combination of methods from algebraic geometry and $p$-adic analysis.
