This together with a previous classification result of the authors reduces the factorization problem of almost simple groups to the case where both factors have a unique nonsolvable composition factor.

Abstract:The factorization of harmonic maps from a simply-connected domain Omega subset of C boolean OR {infinity} to the unitary group is studied, showing that the theory of isotropic harmionic maps is equivalent to that of 2-unitons. Furthermore, a positive answer is given to the Uhlenbeck's conjecture on the upper bound of minimal uniton numbers.

Abstract:A characterization is given for the factorizations of almost simple groups with a solvable factor. It turns out that there are only several infinite families of these nontrivial factorizations, and an almost simple group with such a factorization cannot have socle exceptional Lie type or orthogonal of minus type. The characterization is then applied to study s s -arc-transitive Cayley graphs of solvable groups, leading to a striking corollary that, except for cycles, a non-bipartite connected 3 3 -arc-transitive Cayley graph of a finite solvable group is necessarily a normal cover of the Petersen graph or the Hoffman-Singleton graph.

Abstract:It is proved that any harmonic map ϕ : Ω →Sp(N) from a simply connected domain Ω ⊆R 2⋃ | ∞ | into the symplectic groupSp(N) ⊂U(2N) with finite uniton number can be factorized into a product of a finite number of symplectic unitons. Based on this factorization, it is proved that the minimal symplectic uniton number of ϕ is not larger thanN, and the minimal uniton number of ϕ is not larger than 2N - 1. The latter has been shown in literature in a quite different way.

Abstract:By developing a tangible way to decompose unipotent radicals into irreducible submodules of Singer cycles, we achieve a classification of solvable factors of finite classical groups of Lie type. This completes previous work on factorizations of classical groups with a solvable factor. In particular, it resolves the final uncertain case in the long-standing problem of determining exact factorizations of almost simple groups. As a byproduct of the classification, we also obtain a new characterization of one-dimensional transitive groups, offering further insights into their group structure.

Abstract:Abstract For most classical and similitude groups, we show that each element can be written as a product of two transformations that preserve or almost preserve the underlying form and whose squares are certain scalar maps. This generalizes work of Wonenburger and Vinroot. As an application, we re-prove and slightly extend a well-known result of Mœglin, Vignéras, and Waldspurger on the existence of automorphisms of p -adic classical groups that take each irreducible smooth representation to its dual.

Abstract:Gromov constructed uncountably many pairwise non-isomorphic discrete groups with Kazhdan's property (T). We will show that no separable II_1-factor can contain all these groups in its unitary group. In particular, no separable II_1-factor can contain all separable II_1-factors in it. We also show that the full group C*-algebras of some of these groups fail the lifting property.

Abstract:We develop vertex and factorisation algebra analogues of the theory of quasitriangular bialgebras. Analogously to the classical theory, we prove their categories of representations are controlled by spectral R-matrices. In the vertex algebra case this generalises previous notions due to Etingof-Kazhdan and Frenkel-Reshetikhin. Finally we give examples, including Borcherds twists and homology vertex algebras.

Abstract:We present a new proof, which is independent of the finite simple group classification and applies also to infinite groups, that quasiprimitive permutation groups of simple diagonal type cannot be embedded into wreath products in product action. The proof uses several deep results that concern factorisations of direct products involving subdirect subgroups. We find that such factorisations are controlled by the existence of uniform automorphisms.

Abstract:In 2001, Arhangelskii proved that a topological group that is factorizable over the class of (strong) PT-groups, is a (strong) PT-group. We generalize this result to Tychonoff quasitopological groups and prove that a quasitopological group G that is factorizable over the class of quasi- PT-groups, is a quasi-PT-group. We define the notion of P-sz-factorizability, generalizing P-factorizability and prove that a (quasi)topological group G that is sz-factorizable over the class of (quasi-)PT-groups, is a (quasi-) PT-group. A topological group G that is sz-factorizable over the class of strong PT-groups, is a strong PT-group. We also present some other results on quasi-PT-groups and PT-groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a kind of decomposition of a finite group called a uniform group factorization, as a generalization of exact factorizations of a finite group. A group $G$ is said to admit a uniform group factorization if there exist subgroups $H_1, H_2, \ldots, H_k$ such that $G = H_1 H_2 \cdots H_k$ and the number of ways to represent any element $g \in G$ as $g = h_1 h_2 \cdots h_k$ ($h_i \in H_i$) does not depend on the choice of $g$. Moreover, a uniform group factorization consisting of cyclic subgroups is called a uniform cyclic group factorization. First, we show that any finite solvable group admits a uniform cyclic group factorization. Second, we show that whether all finite groups admit uniform cyclic group factorizations or not is equivalent to whether all finite simple groups admit uniform group factorizations or not. Lastly, we give some concrete examples of such factorizations.

Abstract:We deduce factorization properties for a quasi-Banach module over a quasi-Banach algebra. Especially we extend a result by Hewitt and prove that if any such algebra which possess a bounded left approximate identity, then any element in the module can be factorized. As applications, we deduce factorization properties for Wiener amalgam spaces, for an extended family of modulation spaces and for Schatten symbol classes in pseudo-differential calculus under multiplications like convolutions, twisted convolutions and symbolic products. For example we show for Wiener amalgam spaces that WL^{1,r}*WL^{p,q}=WL^{p,q} when r in (0,1], and p and q are finite and larger than r. In particular we improve Rudin's identity L^1*L^1=L^1.

Abstract:A chief factor H/K of a group G is called F-central if [H/K](G/C-G(H/K)) epsilon F. The product of all such normal subgroups of G, whose G-chief factors are F-central in G, is called the F-hypercentre of G and denoted by Z(F) (G). The finite groups G with factorizations G = AB, where A boolean AND B <= Z(F) (G) for some class of groups F, are studied. Some known results about factorizations of groups are generalized.
