Abstract:In this paper, we first strengthen a few results about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. We then use these results to bound the product of the orders of odd-order composition factors in a composition series of an arbitrary finite linear group.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group. First we generalize a result by Manz and Wolf about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. Then we use this result to find bounds for the product of orders of composition factors of odd order in a composition series of a finite linear group.

Abstract:Let be a class of finite groups containing a group of even order and closed under subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Then each finite group possesses a maximal -subgroup of odd index and the study of the subgroups can be reduced to the study of the so-called submaximal -subgroups of odd index in simple groups. We prove a theorem that deduces the description of submaximal -subgroups of odd index in an alternating group from the description of maximal -subgroups of odd index in the corresponding symmetric group. In consequence, we classify the submaximal soluble subgroups of odd index in alternating groups up to conjugacy.

Abstract:In 1962, V.A. Belonogov proved that if a finite group $G$ contains two maximal subgroups of coprime orders, then either $G$ is one of known solvable groups or $G$ is simple. In this short note based on results by M. Liebeck and J. Saxl on odd order maximal subgroups in finite simple groups we determine possibilities for triples $(G,H,M)$, where $G$ is a finite nonabelian simple group, $H$ and $M$ are maximal subgroups of $G$ with $(|H|,|M|)=1$.

Etingof related to growth rates of tensor powers in symmetric tensor categories, we obtain general bounds on the order of finite subgroups of ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ with restricted composition factors (as usual, modulo Abelian normal subgroups). We place the question in a wider context, and find other applications.

Abstract:The theory of Frobenius groups with Frobenius complements of even order largely reduces to tractable algebraic number theory. If we consider only Frobenius complements with an upper bound $s$ on the number of distinct primes dividing the order of their commutator subgroups, then the proportion of these with odd order is less than $1/2^{s}$. A positive lower bound is also given.

Abstract:A result of Legendre asserts that the difference between the numbers of (length) even and odd partitions of $n$ into distinct parts is $0$, $1$, or $-1$; this also follows from Euler's pentagonal number theorem. We establish an analogous result for compositions and obtain some generalizations that are related to various entries in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $\sigma_1(G)=\frac{1}{|G|}\sum_{H\leq G}\,|H|$. Under some restrictions on the number of conjugacy classes of (non-normal) maximal subgroups of $G$, we prove that if $\sigma_1(G)<\frac{117}{20}\,$, then $G$ is solvable. This partially solves an open problem posed in \cite{9}.

The original version of this article was published in Chinese in the journal Scientia Sinica Mathematica, no.53(2023), pp.931-952. This revised and expanded version has corrected several errors and added quite a few contents. Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the product of the $p$-parts of the orders of certain composition factors of a finite group acting completely reducibly and faithfully on a finite vector space of order divisible by a prime $p$. An application is given for the diameter of a nondiagonal orbital graph of an affine primitive permutation group.

In this paper, we classify the essential 2-subgroups and determine the essential 2-rank of the Frobenius category F D ( G ). Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.
