Abstract:In terms of normal series of a finite group, the existence criterion of a Carter subgroup is obtained. An example showing that the criterion cannot be reformulated in terms of composition factors is given. In conclusion, Carter subgroups in almost simple groups are classified.

Abstract:In the paper we work to complete the classification of Carter subgroups in finite almost simple groups. In particular, it is proved that Carter subgroups of every finite almost simple group are conjugate. Based on our previous results, together with those obtained by F. Dalla Volta, A. Lucchini, and M. C. Tamburini, as a consequence we derive that Carter subgroups of every finite group are conjugate.

First we generalize a result by Manz and Wolf about the order of solvable linear groups of odd order. Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group possessing a Carter subgroup K. Denote by $\mathbf {h}(G)$ the Fitting height of G, by $\mathbf {h}^*(G)$ the generalized Fitting height of G, and by $\ell (K)$ the number of composition factors of K, that is, the number of prime divisors of the order of K with multiplicities. In 1969, E. C. Dade proved that if G is solvable, then $\mathbf {h}(G)$ is bounded in terms of $\ell (K)$. In this paper, we show that $\mathbf {h}^*(G)$ is bounded in terms of $\ell (K)$ as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the higher even $K$-groups of the ring of integers of a number field in terms of class groups of an appropriate extension of the number field in question. This is a natural extension of the previous collective works of Browkin, Keune and Kolster, where they considered the case of $K_2$. We then revisit the Kummer's criterion of totally real fields as generalized by Greenberg and Kida. In particular, we give an algebraic $K$-theoretical formulation of this criterion which we will prove using the algebraic $K$-theoretical results developed here.

Abstract:Abstract Classical results from the theory of finite soluble groups state that Carter subgroups, i.e. self-normalizing nilpotent subgroups, coincide with nilpotent projectors and with nilpotent covering subgroups, and they form a non-empty conjugacy class of subgroups, in soluble groups. This paper presents an extension of these facts to $$\pi $$ π -separable groups, for sets of primes $$\pi $$ π , by proving the existence of a conjugacy class of subgroups in $$\pi $$ π -separable groups, which specialize to Carter subgroups within the universe of soluble groups. The approach runs parallel to the extension of Hall theory from soluble to $$\pi $$ π -separable groups by Čunihin, regarding existence and properties of Hall subgroups.

Abstract:Isotropic odd unitary groups generalize Chevalley groups of classical types over commutative rings and their twisted forms. Such groups have root subgroups parameterized by a root system $\mathsf{BC}_\ell$ and may be constructed by so-called odd form rings with Peirce decompositions. We show the converse: if a group $G$ has root subgroups indexed by roots of $\mathsf{BC}_\ell$ and satisfying natural conditions, then there is a homomorphism $\mathrm{StU}(R, \Delta) \to G$ inducing isomorphisms on the root subgroups, where $\mathrm{StU}(R, \Delta)$ is the odd unitary Steinberg group constructed by an odd form ring $(R, \Delta)$ with a Peirce decomposition. For groups with root subgroups indexed by $\mathsf A_\ell$ (the already known case) the resulting odd form ring is essentially a generalized matrix ring.

Abstract:We modify the Frecon-Jaligot construction of Carter subgroups to show that a degenerate type group has a Carter subgroup invariant under the Sylow 2-subgroup of a group of automorphisms; thus reducing the need to know that Carter subgroups are conjugate in degenerate type groups.

Abstract:In 1962, V.A. Belonogov proved that if a finite group $G$ contains two maximal subgroups of coprime orders, then either $G$ is one of known solvable groups or $G$ is simple. In this short note based on results by M. Liebeck and J. Saxl on odd order maximal subgroups in finite simple groups we determine possibilities for triples $(G,H,M)$, where $G$ is a finite nonabelian simple group, $H$ and $M$ are maximal subgroups of $G$ with $(|H|,|M|)=1$.

Abstract:An odd Coxeter group $W$ is one which admits a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ for which all the exponents $m_{ij}$ are either odd or infinity. The paper investigates the family of odd Coxeter groups whose associated labeled graphs $\mathcal{V}_{(W,S)}$ are trees. It is known that two Coxeter groups in this family are isomorphic if and only if they admit Coxeter systems having the same rank and the same multiset of finite exponents. In particular, each group in this family is isomorphic to a group that admits a Coxeter system whose associated labeled graph is a star shaped tree. We give the complete description of the automorphism group of this group, and derive a sufficient condition for the splitting of the automorphism group as a semi-direct product of the inner and the outer automorphism groups. As applications, we prove that Coxeter groups in this family satisfy the $R_\infty$-property and are (co)-Hopfian. We compare structural properties, automorphism groups, $\R_\infty$-property and (co)-Hopfianity of a special odd Coxeter group whose only finite exponent is three with the braid group and the twin group.

Abstract:Let p be a prime and F be a finite field of characteristic p . Suppose that FG is the group algebra of the finite p -group G over the field F . Let V ( FG ) denote the group of normalized units in FG and let V * ( FG ) denote the unitary subgroup of V ( FG ). If p is odd, then the order of V * ( FG ) is ∣ F ∣ (∣ G ∣−1)/2 . However, the case p = 2 still is open. In this paper, the order of V * ( FG ) is computed when G is a nonabelian 2-group given by a central extension of the form and G ′ ≅ Z 2 , n, m ⩾ 1. Furthermore, a conjecture is confirmed, i.e., the order of V * ( FG ) can be divisible by , where Ω 1 ( G ) = { g ∈ G ∣ g 2 = 1}.

Abstract:The problem of constructing or characterizing strongly regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets) has garnered significant attention over the past half-century. In [European J. Combin. 24 (2023) 777--784], Miklavič and Potočnik expanded upon this field, achieving a complete characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs over cyclic groups by employing the method of Schur rings. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007) 14--33], they formally proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs for any given class of groups. In this context, abelian groups are of particular importance, as a considerable number of distance-regular graphs with classical parameters are precisely Cayley graphs over abelian groups. In this paper, we address the Miklavič-Potočnik problem for abelian groups of rank $2$. More specifically, we identify all distance-regular Cayley graphs over the group $\mathbb{Z}_n \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. Our proof utilizes novel tools such as polynomial addition sets, Desarguesian affine planes, and the duality of Schur rings over abelian groups.
