Abstract:We modify the Frecon-Jaligot construction of Carter subgroups to show that a degenerate type group has a Carter subgroup invariant under the Sylow 2-subgroup of a group of automorphisms; thus reducing the need to know that Carter subgroups are conjugate in degenerate type groups.

Abstract:In the paper we work to complete the classification of Carter subgroups in finite almost simple groups. In particular, it is proved that Carter subgroups of every finite almost simple group are conjugate. Based on our previous results, together with those obtained by F. Dalla Volta, A. Lucchini, and M. C. Tamburini, as a consequence we derive that Carter subgroups of every finite group are conjugate.

Abstract:In terms of normal series of a finite group, the existence criterion of a Carter subgroup is obtained. An example showing that the criterion cannot be reformulated in terms of composition factors is given. In conclusion, Carter subgroups in almost simple groups are classified.

Abstract:We study Frattini subgroups of various generalizations of hyperbolic groups. For any countable group $G$ admitting a general type action on a hyperbolic space $S$, we show that the induced action of the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ on $S$ has bounded orbits. This implies that $\Phi(G)$ is "small" compared to $G$; in particular, $|G:\Phi(G)|=\infty$. In contrast, for any finitely generated non-cyclic group $Q$ with $\Phi(Q)=\{ 1\}$, we construct an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group $L$ such that $L/\Phi(L)\cong Q$; in particular, the Frattini subgroup of an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group can have finite index. As an application, we obtain the first examples of invariably generated, infinite, lacunary hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:This paper develops some general results about actions of finite groups on (infinite) abelian groups in the finite Morley rank category. They are linked to a range of problems on groups of finite Morley rank discussed in [16]. Crucially, these results are needed for the forthcoming work by Ayşe Berkman and myself [5] where we remove the `sharpness' assumption from [4]. Also, they yield a proof of the long standing conjecture of linearity of irreducible definable actions of simple algebraic groups on elementary abelian $p$-groups of finite Morley rank [16, Conjecture 12].

Topological Rigidity for FJ by the Infinite Cyclic Group

Abstract:We call a group FJ if it satisfies the $K$- and $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$. We show that if $G$ is FJ, then the simple Borel conjecture (in dimensions $\ge 5$) holds for every group of the form $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$. If in addition $Wh(G\times \mathbb Z)=0$, which is true for all known torsion free FJ groups, then the bordism Borel conjecture (in dimensions $n\ge 5$) holds for $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$. One of the key ingredients in proving these rigidity results is another main result, which says that if a torsion free group $G$ satisfies the $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$, then any semi-direct product $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$ also satisfies the $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$. Our result is indeed more general and implies the $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in additive categories is closed under extensions of torsion free groups. This enables us to extend the class of groups which satisfy the Novikov conjecture.

Abstract:We clarify quasi-Frobenius configurations of finite Morley rank. 1. We remove one assumption in an identification theorem by Zamour while simplifying the proof. 2. We show that a strongly embedded quasi-Frobenius configuration of odd type, is actually Frobenius. 3. For dihedral configurations, one has $\dim G = 3 \dim C$. These results rely on an interesting phenomenon of closure of non-generic matter under taking centralisers.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an infinite simple group of finite Morley rank and of Prüfer $2$-rank $1$ which admits a supertight automorphism $\alpha$ such that the fixed-point subgroup $C_G(\alpha^n)$ is pseudofinite for all integers $n > 0$. We prove that $G \cong {\rm PGL}_2(K)$ for some algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $\neq 2$.

Abstract:We show that real semi-simple Lie groups of higher rank contain (infinitely generated) discrete subgroups with full limit sets in the corresponding Furstenberg boundaries. Additionally, we provide criteria under which discrete subgroups of $G = \operatorname{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ must have a full limit set in the Furstenberg boundary of $G$. In the appendix, we show the the existence of Zariski-dense discrete subgroups $\Gamma$ of $\operatorname{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$, where $n\ge 3$, such that the Jordan projection of some loxodromic element $\gamma \in\Gamma$ lies on the boundary of the limit cone of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:We establish the structure of normal subgroups in θ-Frattini extensions, where θ is a subgroup functor. For a local Fitting structure $ \mathfrak{F} $ containing all nilpotent groups, it is shown that, in a soluble group, the crossing of $ \mathfrak{F} $-abnormal maximal θ -subgroups not containing $ \mathfrak{F} $-radicals and not belonging to $ \mathfrak{F} $ coincides with the crossing of $ \mathfrak{F} $-abnormal maximal θ -subgroups and belongs to the structure of $ \mathfrak{F} $.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a compact simple Lie group equipped with the left invariant framing $L$. It is known that there are several groups $G$ such that $(G, L)$ is non-null framed bordant. Previously we gave an alternative proof of these results using the decomposition formula of its bordism class into a Kronecker product by E. Ossa. In this note we propose a verification formula by reconsidering it, through a little more ingenious in the use of this product formula, and try to apply it to the non-null bordantness results above.

Abstract:Let be an inner form of a general linear group over a non-Archimedean local field. We fix an arbitrary irreducible representation of . Building on the work of Lapid-Mínguez on the irreducibility of parabolic inductions, we show how to define a full subcategory of the category of smooth representations of some , on which the parabolic induction functor is fully-faithful. A key ingredient of our proof for the fully-faithfulness is constructions of indecomposable representations of length 2. Such result for a special situation has been previously applied in proving the local non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for non-Archimedean general linear groups. In this article, we apply the fully-faithful result to prove a certain big derivative arising from Jacquet functor satisfies the property that its socle is irreducible and has multiplicity one in the Jordan-Hölder sequence of the big derivative.

Abstract:We prove a Freiman--Ruzsa-type theorem with polynomial bounds in arbitrary abelian groups with bounded torsion, thereby proving (in full generality) a conjecture of Marton. Specifically, let $G$ be an abelian group of torsion $m$ (meaning $mg=0$ for all $g \in G$) and suppose that $A$ is a non-empty subset of $G$ with $|A+A| \leq K|A|$. Then $A$ can be covered by at most $(2K)^{O(m^3)}$ translates of a subgroup of $H \leq G$ of cardinality at most $|A|$. The argument is a variant of that used in the case $G = \mathbf{F}_2^n$ in a recent paper of the authors.

Derangements in non-Frobenius groups

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of sufficiently large degree $n$, then either $G$ is primitive and Frobenius, or the proportion of derangements in $G$ is larger than $1/(2n^{1/2})$. This is sharp, generalizes substantially bounds of Cameron--Cohen and Guralnick--Wan, and settles conjectures of Guralnick--Tiep and Bailey--Cameron--Giudici--Royle in large degree. We also give an application to coverings of varieties over finite fields.

On the infinite Frobenius actions on de Rham fundamental groups of affine curves

Abstract:We compute the infinite Frobenius actions on the de Rham fundamental groups of affine curves defined over $\mathbf R$. As an application, we compute extension classes of real mixed Hodge structures associated with the motivic fundamental groups of affine curves. We establish connections between our computation and special values of Rankin-Selberg L-functions, focusing on the case of modular curves, and show that the associated extensions of mixed Hodge structures does not split. We compute local zeta integrals not only at good primes but also at certain bad primes.

Lie 2-groups from loop group extensions

Abstract:We give a very simple construction of the string 2-group as a strict Fréchet Lie 2-group. The corresponding crossed module is defined using the conjugation action of the loop group on its central extension, which drastically simplifies several constructions previously given in the literature. More generally, we construct strict 2-group extensions for a Lie group from a central extension of its based loop group, under the assumption that this central extension is disjoint commutative. We show in particular that this condition is automatic in the case that the Lie group is semisimple and simply connected.

Finitely presented subgroups of direct products of graphs of groups with free abelian vertex groups

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.
