Abstract:We give a short proof of a strong form of Weyl's law for $\text{SO}(N)$ using well known facts of the theory of modular forms. The exponent of the error term is sharp when the rank is at least~$4$. We also discuss the cases with smaller rank improving previous results.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of the exact form of the Weyl law on the special orthogonal group \(SO(N)\). Specifically, by using known facts in the theory of modular forms, the author gives a short proof that when the rank \(n\geq4\), the exponent of the error term in the Weyl law is optimal. For the case of smaller rank \(n < 4\), the author also discusses it and improves the previous results. ### Main Objectives of the Paper 1. **Provide a short proof**: The main purpose of the paper is to provide a concise proof for the Weyl law on \(SO(N)\), especially when the rank \(n\geq4\), the exponent of the error term is optimal. 2. **Discuss the low - rank cases**: For the case of \(n < 4\), the paper also discusses it and improves the previous results. 3. **Utilize the theory of modular forms**: The author uses the basic properties in the theory of modular forms to derive the results, especially using the Fourier expansion of modular forms and related estimates. ### Specific Problems - **Exact form of the Weyl law**: The Weyl law describes the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the Laplace - Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold. For \(SO(N)\), the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalue counting function \(N(\lambda)\) is as follows: \[ \lim_{\lambda\rightarrow\infty}\lambda^{-d/2}N(\lambda)=\frac{2\text{Vol}(M)}{d(4\pi)^{d/2}\Gamma(d/2)} \] where \(d\) is the dimension of the manifold and \(\text{Vol}(M)\) is the volume of the manifold. - **Optimality of the error term**: The paper pays special attention to the optimality of the error term, that is: \[ N(\lambda)-C_d\lambda^{d/2}= \begin{cases} O(\lambda^{d/2 - 1})&\text{if }n > 4,\\ O(\lambda^{d/2-1}\log\lambda)&\text{if }n = 4. \end{cases} \] ### Methods - **Application of modular forms**: The author utilizes the basic properties of modular forms, especially the Fourier expansion of modular forms and related estimates. - **Calculation of eigenvalues and multiplicities**: For \(SO(N)\), eigenvalues and multiplicities can be determined by the highest - weight representation. - **Connection with lattice point problems**: By transforming the eigenvalue counting problem into a lattice point problem, the author uses classical number - theoretic methods to estimate the error term. ### Conclusions The paper successfully provides a short and precise proof for the Weyl law on \(SO(N)\), especially in the case of rank \(n\geq4\), it is proved that the exponent of the error term is optimal. For the low - rank cases, the paper also provides improved results.
