What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the study of the mean square of the Weyl law error term on the Heisenberg manifold. Specifically, the author studied the mean square of the Weyl law error term \(R(t)\) in the \((2l + 1)\)-dimensional non - rational Heisenberg manifold. ### Background and Problem Description The Weyl law describes the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplace - Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold. For a closed \(n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold \((M, g)\), its spectral counting function \(N(t)\) is defined as the number of eigenvalues not exceeding \(t\). Hörmander proved the Weyl law: \[ N(t)=\frac{\text{vol}(B_n)\cdot\text{vol}(M)}{(2\pi)^n}t^{n/2}+O(t^{(n - 1)/2}) \] where \(\text{vol}(B_n)\) is the volume of the \(n\)-dimensional unit ball. Define the error term \(R(t)\) as: \[ R(t):=N(t)-\frac{\text{vol}(B_n)\cdot\text{vol}(M)}{(2\pi)^n}t^{n/2} \] Determining the optimal bound of \(R(t)\) on a given manifold is a very difficult problem, which depends on the properties of the associated geodesic flow. Many studies have made improvements for certain types of manifolds, but the study of non - rational Heisenberg manifolds, especially their mean squares, is still challenging. ### Research Objectives The main objective of this paper is to study the mean square of the Weyl law error term \(R(t)\) on the \((2l + 1)\)-dimensional non - rational Heisenberg manifold. Specifically, the author hopes to obtain an asymptotic formula in the following form: \[ \int_{1}^{T}R^{2}(t)\,dt = C_{l,\theta}T^{2l+1/2}+O(T^{2l+\frac{4\gamma + 1}{8\gamma+4}+\varepsilon}) \] where \(C_{l,\theta}\) is an explicit constant, \(\theta\) is a non - rational positive number, and \(\gamma\) is the approximation type of \(\theta\). ### Main Results The main results of the paper show that for non - rational numbers \(\theta\) of finite approximation type, there is the following asymptotic formula: \[ \int_{1}^{T}R^{2}(x)\,dx=\frac{2^{9/2-4l}C_{l,\theta}}{(4l + 1)(l-1)!2\pi^{2l+3/2}}T^{2l+1/2}+O(T^{2l+\frac{4\gamma + 1}{8\gamma+4}+\varepsilon}) \] In particular, if \(\theta\) is an algebraic non - rational number or almost all non - rational numbers, then: \[ \int_{1}^{T}R^{2}(x)\,dx=\frac{2^{9/2-4l}C_{l,\theta}}{(4l + 1)(l-1)!2\pi^{2l+3/2}}T^{2l+1/2}+O(T^{2l+\frac{5}{12}+\varepsilon}) \] These results provide an important theoretical basis for understanding the statistical properties of the Weyl law error term on non - rational Heisenberg manifolds.
