Abstract:0. In this short note, we derive some nonabelian localization formulas in a very simple way. The method is to use Witten’s idea of multiplying the integral by a Gaussian and then to complete square. The localization procedure we use is different from Witten’s in that we do not need the Bismut localizing factor e−tDλ as in [W], at the same time we avoid the use of Fourier transform in [JK]. Along the way we will also derive Martin’s formula which relates nonabelian symplectic reduction to the abelian case. The method is rather elementary and applicable to other situations which we hope to discuss on a later occasion. We remark that all of the basic results in this note, which grows out of my trying to understand this circle of ideas, are due to Jeffrey-Kirwan, Martin and Witten. Our sole contribution is pointing out a different way to derive them. Other quite different approaches to such type results have also been obtained by Guillemin-Kalkman [GK], Martin [M] and Vergne [V]. Weyl Calculus on Graded Groups

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish a pseudo-differential Weyl calculus on graded nilpotent Lie groups $G$ which extends the celebrated Weyl calculus on $\mathbb{R}^n$. To reach this goal, we develop a symbolic calculus for a very general class of quantization schemes, following [Doc. Math., 22, 1539--1592, 2017], using the Hörmander symbol classes $S^m_{\rho, \delta}(G)$ introduced in [Progress in Mathematics, 314. Birkhäuser/Springer, 2016]. We particularly focus on the so-called symmetric calculi, for which quantizing and taking the adjoint commute, among them the Euclidean Weyl calculus, but we also recover the (non-symmetric) Kohn-Nirenberg calculus, on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and on general graded groups [Progress in Mathematics, 314. Birkhäuser/Springer, 2016]. Several interesting applications follow directly from our calculus: expected mapping properties on Sobolev spaces, the existence of one-sided parametrices and the Gårding inequality for elliptic operators, and a generalization of the Poisson bracket for symmetric quantizations on stratified groups. In the particular case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_n$, we are able to answer the fundamental questions of this paper: which, among all the admissible quantizations, is the natural Weyl quantization on $\mathbb{H}_n$? And which are the criteria that determine it uniquely? The surprisingly simple but compelling answers raise the question whether what is true for $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{H}_n$ also extends to general graded groups, which we answer in the affirmative in this paper. Among other things, we discuss and investigate an analogue of the symplectic invariance property of the Weyl quantization in the setting of graded groups, as well as the notion of the Poisson bracket for symbols in the setting of stratified groups, linking it to the symbolic properties of the commutators.

Lectures on the local semicircle law for Wigner matrices

Abstract:These notes provide an introduction to the local semicircle law from random matrix theory, as well as some of its applications. We focus on Wigner matrices, Hermitian random matrices with independent upper-triangular entries with zero expectation and constant variance. We state and prove the local semicircle law, which says that the eigenvalue distribution of a Wigner matrix is close to Wigner's semicircle distribution, down to spectral scales containing slightly more than one eigenvalue. This local semicircle law is formulated using the Green function, whose individual entries are controlled by large deviation bounds. We then discuss three applications of the local semicircle law: first, complete delocalization of the eigenvectors, stating that with high probability the eigenvectors are approximately flat; second, rigidity of the eigenvalues, giving large deviation bounds on the locations of the individual eigenvalues; third, a comparison argument for the local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk spectrum, showing that the local eigenvalue statistics of two Wigner matrices coincide provided the first four moments of their entries coincide. We also sketch further applications to eigenvalues near the spectral edge, and to the distribution of eigenvectors.

Weyl's law in Liouville quantum gravity

Abstract:Can you hear the shape of Liouville quantum gravity? We obtain a Weyl law for the eigenvalues of Liouville Brownian motion: the $n$-th eigenvalue grows linearly with $n$, with the proportionality constant given by the Liouville area of the domain and a certain deterministic constant $c_\gamma$ depending on $\gamma \in (0, 2)$. The constant $c_\gamma$, initially a complicated function of Sheffield's quantum cone, can be evaluated explicitly and is strictly greater than the equivalent Riemannian constant. At the heart of the proof we obtain sharp asymptotics of independent interest for the small-time behaviour of the on-diagonal heat kernel. Interestingly, we show that the scaled heat kernel displays nontrivial pointwise fluctuations. Fortunately, at the level of the heat trace these pointwise fluctuations cancel each other, which leads to the result. We complement these results with a number of conjectures on the spectral geometry of Liouville quantum gravity, notably suggesting a connection with quantum chaos.

Abstract:In his classical paper, Laurent Schwartz proved that on the real line, in every linear translation invariant space of continuous complex valued functions, which is closed under compact convergence the exponential monomials span a dense subspace. He studied so-called local ideals in the space of Fourier transforms, and his proof based on the observation that, on the one hand, these local ideals are completely determined by the exponential monomials in the space, and, on the other hand, these local ideals completely determine the space itself. On the other hand, Dimitri Gurevich gave counterexamples for Schwartz's theorem in higher dimension. In this paper we show that the ideas of localisation can be extended to general locally compact Abelian groups using abstract derivations on the Fourier algebra of compactly supported measures. Based on this method we present necessary and sufficient conditions for spectral synthesis for varieties on locally compact Abelian groups. Using localisation, in \cite{MR4789359} we proved that spectral synthesis holds on a locally compact Abelian group $G$ if and only if it holds on $G/B$, where $B$ is the closed subgroup of compact elements. This may lead to a complete characterisation of locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis.

Abstract:We prove a general local law for Wigner matrices which optimally handles observables of arbitrary rank and thus it unifies the well-known averaged and isotropic local laws. As an application, we prove that the quadratic forms of a general deterministic matrix $A$ on the bulk eigenvectors of a Wigner matrix has approximately Gaussian fluctuation. For the bulk spectrum, we thus generalize our previous result [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.06730" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.06730">arXiv:2103.06730</a>] valid for test matrices $A$ of large rank as well as the result of Benigni and Lopatto [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.12013" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.12013">arXiv:2103.12013</a>] valid for specific small rank observables.

The Gauge Theory of Weyl Group and its Interpretation as Weyl Quadratic Gravity

Abstract:In this paper we give an extensive description of Weyl quadratic gravity as the gauge theory of the Weyl group. The previously discovered (vectorial) torsion/non-metricity equivalence is shown to be built-in as it corresponds to a redefinition of the generators of the Weyl group. We present a generalisation of the torsion/non-metricity duality which includes, aside from the vector, also a traceless 3-tensor with two antisymmetric indices and vanishing skew symmetric part. A discussion of this relation in the case of minimally coupled matter fields is given. We further point out that a Rarita-Schwinger field can couple minimally to all the components of torsion and some components of non-metricity. Alongside we present the same gauge construction for the Poincaré and conformal groups. We show that even though the Weyl group is a subgroup of the conformal group, the gauge theory of the latter is actually only a special case of Weyl quadratic gravity.

Yangian for cotangent Lie algebras and spectral $R$-matrices

Abstract:In this paper, we present a canonical quantization of Lie bialgebra structures on the formal power series $\mathfrak{d}[\![t]\!]$ with coefficients in the cotangent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{d} = T^*\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{g} \ltimes \mathfrak{g}^*$ to a simple complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We prove that these quantizations produce twists to the natural analog of the Yangian for $\mathfrak{d}$. Moreover, we construct spectral $R$-matrices for these twisted Yangians as compositions of twisting matrices. The motivation for the construction of these twisted Yangians over $\mathfrak{d}$ comes from certain 4d holomorphic-topological gauge theory. More precisely, we show that pertubative line operators in this theory can be realized as representations of these Yangians. Moreover, the comultiplications of these Yangians correspond to the monodial structure of the category of line operators.

Weight-Lattice Discretization of Weyl-Orbit Functions

Abstract:Weyl-orbit functions have been defined for each simple Lie algebra, and permit Fourier-like analysis on the fundamental region of the corresponding affine Weyl group. They have also been discretized, using a refinement of the coweight lattice, so that digitized data on the fundamental region can be Fourier-analyzed. The discretized orbit function has arguments that are redundant if related by the affine Weyl group, while its labels, the Weyl-orbit representatives, invoke the dual affine Weyl group. Here we discretize the orbit functions in a novel way, by using the weight lattice. A cleaner theory results, with symmetry between the arguments and labels of the discretized orbit functions. Orthogonality of the new discretized orbit functions is proved, and leads to the construction of unitary, symmetric matrices with Weyl-orbit-valued elements. For one type of orbit function, the matrix coincides with the Kac-Peterson modular $S$ matrix, important for Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory.

Abstract:We investigate dual realizations of non--commutative spaces of Lie algebra type in terms of formal power series in the Weyl algebra. To each realization of a Lie algebra $\g$ we associate a star--product on the symmetric algebra $S(\g)$ and an ordering on the enveloping algebra $U(\g)$. Dual realizations of $\g$ are defined in terms of left--right duality of the star--products on $S(\g)$. It is shown that the dual realizations are related to an extension problem for $\g$ by shift operators whose action on $U(\g)$ describes left and right shift of the generators of $U(\g)$ in a given monomial. Using properties of the extended algebra, in the Weyl symmetric ordering we derive closed form expressions for the dual realizations of $\g$ in terms of two generating functions for the Bernoulli numbers. The theory is illustrated by considering the $\kappa$--deformed space.

A Weyl's Law for Singular Riemannian Foliations with Applications to Invariant Theory

Abstract:We prove a version of Weyl's Law for the basic spectrum of a closed singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\mathcal{F})$ with basic mean curvature. In the special case of $M=\mathbb{S}^n$, this gives an explicit formula for the volume of the leaf space $\mathbb{S}^n/\mathcal{F}$ in terms of the algebra of basic polynomials. In particular, $\operatorname{Vol}(\mathbb{S}^n/\mathcal{F})$ is a rational multiple of $\operatorname{Vol}(\mathbb{S}^m)$, where $m=\dim (\mathbb{S}^n/\mathcal{F})$.

Abstract:We investigate two-dimensional canonical systems $y'=zJHy$ on an interval, with positive semi-definite Hamiltonian $H$, such that limit circle case prevails at the left endpoint and limit point case at the right . Let $q_H$ be the Weyl coefficient of the system. We prove a formula that determines the imaginary part of $q_H$ along the imaginary axis up to multiplicative constants, which are independent of $H$. Using classical Abelian-Tauberian theorems, we deduce characterizations of spectral properties such as integrability of a given comparison function w.r.t. the spectral measure $\mu_H$, and boundedness of the distribution function of $\mu_H$ relative to a given comparison function. We study in depth Hamiltonians for which $\arg q_H(ir)$ approaches $0$ or $\pi$ (at least on a subsequence). We show that tangential behavior of $q_H(ir)$ imposes a substantial restriction on the growth of $|q_H(ir)|$. An example is provided where $\arg q_H(ir)$ heavily oscillates. Our results in this context are interesting also from a function theoretic point of view.

Characterisation of Locally Compact Abelian Groups Having Spectral Synthesis

Abstract:In this paper we solve a long-standing problem which goes back to Laurent Schwartz's work on mean periodic functions. Namely, we completely characterise those locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis. So far a characterisation theorem was available for discrete Abelian groups only. Here we use a kind of localisation concept for the ideals of the Fourier algebra of the underlying group. We show that localisability of ideals is equivalent to synthesizability. Based on this equivalence we show that if spectral synthesis holds on each extension of it by a locally compact Abelian group consisting of compact elements, and also on any extension to a direct sum with a copy of the integers. Then, using Schwartz's result and Gurevich's counterexamples we apply the structure theory of locally compact Abelian groups.

A refined Weyl character formula for comodules on $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$

Abstract:Let $A$ be any commutative unital ring and let $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$ be the general linear group scheme on $A$ of rank $2$. We study the representation theory of $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$ and the symmetric powers $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)$, where $(V, \Delta)$ is the standard right comodule on $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$. We prove a refined Weyl character formula for $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)$. There is for any integer $d \geq 1$ a (canonical) refined weight space decomposition $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V) \cong \oplus_i \operatorname{Sym}^d(V)^i$ where each direct summand $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)^i$ is a comodule on $N \subseteq \operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$. Here $N$ is the schematic normalizer of the diagonal torus $T \subseteq \operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$. We prove a character formula for the direct summands of $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V)$ for any integer $d \geq 1$. This refined Weyl character formula implies the classical Weyl character formula. As a Corollary we get a refined Weyl character formula for the pull back $\operatorname{Sym}^d(V \otimes K)$ as a comodule on $\operatorname{GL}_{2,K}$ where $K$ is any field. We also calculate explicit examples involving the symmetric powers, symmetric tensors and their duals. The refined weight space decomposition exists in general for group schemes such as $\operatorname{GL}_{2,A}$ and $\operatorname{SL}_{2,A}$. The study may have applications to the study of groups $G$ such as $\operatorname{SL}(n,k)$ and $\operatorname{GL}(n,k)$ and quotients $G/H$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field (or a Dedekind domain) and $H \subseteq G$ is a closed subgroup. The refined weight space decomposition of $S_{\lambda}(V)$ has a relation with irreducible module over a field of positive characteristic. In an example I prove it recovers the irreducible module $V(\lambda) \subsetneq S_{\lambda}(V)$.

Abstract:We prove a general estimate for the Weyl remainder of an elliptic, semiclassical pseudodifferential operator in terms of volumes of recurrence sets for the Hamilton flow of its principal symbol. This quantifies earlier results of Volovoy. Our result particularly improves Weyl remainder exponents for compact Lie groups and surfaces of revolution. And gives a quantitative estimate for Bérard's Weyl remainder in terms of the maximal expansion rate and topological entropy of the geodesic flow.

Abstract:We give a generally covariant description, in the sense of symplectic geometry, of gauge transformations in Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization. Gauge transformations exist not only at the classical level, but also at the quantum level, where they leave the action-weighted measure $d\mu_S = d\mu e^{2S/\hbar}$ invariant. The quantum gauge transformations and their Lie algebra are $\hbar$-deformations of the classical gauge transformation and their Lie algebra. The corresponding Lie brackets $[ , ]^q$, and $[ , ]^c$, are constructed in terms of the symplectic structure and the measure $d\mu_S$. We discuss closed string field theory as an application.

Semisimple elements and the little Weyl group of real semisimple $Z_m$-graded Lie algebras

Abstract:We consider the semisimple orbits of a Vinberg $\theta$-representation. First we take the complex numbers as base field. By a case by case analysis we show a technical result stating the equality of two sets of hyperplanes, one corresponding to the restricted roots of a Cartan subspace, the other corresponding to the complex reflections in the (little) Weyl group. The semisimple orbits have representatives in a finite number of sets that correspond to reflection subgroups of the (little) Weyl group. One of the consequences of our technical result is that the elements in a fixed such set all have the same stabilizer in the acting group. Secondly we study what happens when the base field is the real numbers. We look at Cartan subspaces and show that the real Cartan subspaces can be classified by the first Galois cohomology set of the normalizer of a fixed real Cartan subspace. In the real case the orbits can be classified using Galois cohomology. However, in order for that to work we need to know which orbits have a real representative. We show a theorem that characterizes the orbits of homogeneous semisimple elements that do have such a real representative. This closely follows and generalizes a theorem from \cite{bgl}.
