Abstract:We propose a conceptually economical and computationally tractable completion of the foundations of gauge theory on quantum principal bundles à la Brzeziński--Majid to the case of general differential calculi and strong bimodule connections. In particular, we use explicit groupoid equivalences to reframe the basic concepts of gauge theory -- gauge transformation, gauge potential, and field strength -- in terms of reconstruction of calculi on the total space (to second order) from given calculi on the structure quantum group and base, respectively. We therefore construct gauge-equivariant moduli spaces of all suitable first- and second-order total differential calculi, respectively, compatible with these choices. As a first illustration, we relate the gauge theory of a crossed product algebra qua trivial quantum principal bundle to lazy Sweedler and Hochschild cohomology with coefficients. As a second illustration, we show that a noncommutative $2$-torus with real multiplication is the base space of a non-trivial $\mathrm{U}_{q^2}(1)$-gauge theory admitting Connes's constant curvature connection as a $q$-monopole connection, where -- in the spirit of Manin's Alterstraum -- one must take $q$ to be the norm-positive fundamental unit of the corresponding real quadratic field.

Abstract:We discuss gauge transformations in QED coupled to a charged spinor field, and examine whether we can gauge-transform the entire formulation of the theory from one gauge to another, so that not only the gauge and spinor fields, but also the forms of the operator-valued Hamiltonians are transformed. The discussion includes the covariant gauge, in which the gauge condition and Gauss's law are not primary constraints on operator-valued quantities; it also includes the Coulomb gauge, and the spatial axial gauge, in which the constraints are imposed on operator-valued fields by applying the Dirac-Bergmann procedure. We show how to transform the covariant, Coulomb and spatial axial gauges to what we call ``common form,'' in which all particle excitation modes have identical properties. We also show that, once that common form has been reached, QED in different gauges has a common time-evolution operator that defines time-translation for states that represent systems of electrons and photons. By combining gauge transformations with changes of representation from standard to common form, the entire apparatus of a gauge theory can be transformed from one gauge to another.

Abstract:This note focuses the problem of motivating the use of gauge symmetries (being the identity on the observables) from general principles, beyond their practical success, starting from global gauge symmetries and then by emphasizing the substantially different role of local gauge symmetries. In the latter case, a deterministic time evolution of the local field algebra, necessary for field quantization, requires a reduction of the full local gauge group to a residual local subgroup satisfying suitable conditions. A non-trivial residual local gauge group allows for the use of a local field algebra, otherwise precluded if is reduced to the identity. Moreover, in the non-abelian case a residual allows to exploit its topology, which provides the (gauge invariant) topological invariants which classify the vacuum structure with important physical effects. Furthermore, it provides a general mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking without Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:We use recent progress on Chern-Simons gauge theory in three dimensions [18] to give explicit, closed form formulas for the star product on some functions on the affine space ${\mathcal A}(\Sigma)$ of (smooth) connections on the trivialized principal $G$-bundle on a compact, oriented two manifold $\Sigma.$ These formulas give a close relation between knot invariants, such as the Kauffman bracket polynomial, and the Jones and HOMFLY polynomials, arising in Chern Simons gauge theory, and deformation quantization of ${\mathcal A}(\Sigma).$ This relation echoes the relation between the manifold invariants of Witten [20] and Reshetikhin-Turaev [16] and {\em geometric} quantization of this space (or its symplectic quotient by the action of the gauge group). In our case this relation arises from explicit algebraic formulas arising from the (mathematically well-defined) functional integrals of [18].

Abstract:An appropriate field configuration in non-polynomial closed string field theory is shown to correspond to a general off-shell field configuration in low-energy effective field theory. A set of string field theoretic symmetries that act on the fields in low-energy effective field theory as general coordinate transformation and antisymmetric tensor gauge transformation is identified. The analysis is carried out to first order in the fields; thus the symmetry transformations in string field theory reproduce the linear and the first non-linear terms in the gauge transformations in the low-energy effective field theory.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the gauge symmetry of classicalfield theories in integral formalism. A gauge invariant theory is defined interms of the invariance of the physical observables under the coordinatetransformations in principal bundle space. Through the detailed study on theproperty of non-Abelian parallel transportor under gauge transformations, weshow that it is not generally a two-point spinor, i.e. an operator to beaffected only by the gauge group elements at the two end points of the paralleltransport path, except for the pure gauge situation, and therefore the localgauge symmetry for non-Abelian models is found to be broken in non-perturbativedomain. However, an Abelian gauge theory is proved to be strictly invariantunder local gauge transformation, as it is illustrated by the invariance of theinterference pattern of electrons in Aharonov-Bohm effect. The related issuesof the phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract:We find the "bracket multiplication" table related to the q -Weyl generators of the multi-parameter quantization G of the type G2+ in the explicite form. This information allows one to decompose every element in PBW basis related to the q -Weyl generators using a natural diminishing procedure. Nevertheless G is not a quadratic-linear Koszul algebra with respect to the q -Weyl generators. It is known that the multi-parameter quantizations of type An+ and Bn+ in q -Weyl generators indeed are quadratic-linear Koszul algebras.

Abstract:We relate Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of higher rank vector bundles to quantum-classical hybrid systems and quantization in stages of symplectic fibrations. We apply this picture to the analysis and geometry of vector bundles, including the spectral gap of the Berezin transform and the convergence rate of Donaldson's iterations towards balanced metrics on stable vector bundles. We also establish refined estimates in the scalar case to compute the rate of Donaldson's iterations towards balanced metrics on Kähler manifolds with constant scalar curvature.

Impact of gauge fixing on angular momentum operators of the covariantly quantized electromagnetic field

Abstract:Covariant quantization of the electromagnetic field imposes the so-called gauge-fixing modification on the Lagrangian density. As a result of that, the total angular momentum operator receives at least one gauge-fixing-originated contribution, whose presence causes some confusion in the literature. The goal of this work is to discuss in detail why such a contribution, having no classical interpretation, is actually indispensable. For this purpose, we divide canonical and Belinfante-Rosenfeld total angular momentum operators into different components and study their commutation relations, their role in generation of rotations of quantum fields, and their action on states from the physical sector of the theory. Then, we examine physical matrix elements of operators having gauge-fixing-related contributions, illustrating problems that one may encounter due to careless employment of the resolution of identity during their evaluation. The resolution of identity, in the indefinite-metric space of the covariantly-quantized electromagnetic field, is extensively discussed because it takes a not-so-intuitive form if one insists on explicit projection onto states from the physical sector of the theory. Our studies are carried out in the framework of the Gupta-Bleuler theory of the free electromagnetic field. Relevant remarks about interacting systems, described by covariantly-quantized electrodynamics, are given.

A gauge-invariant measure for gauge fields on $\mathbb{CP}^2$

Abstract:We consider four-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory living on a complex projective space $\mathbb{CP}^2$ as a way of gaining insights into (3+1)-dimensional QCD. In particular, we use a complex parametrization of gauge fields on which gauge transformations act homogeneously. This allows us to factor out the gauge degrees of freedom from the volume element leading to a manifestly gauge-invariant measure for the gauge-orbit space (the space of all gauge potentials modulo gauge transformations). The terms appearing in the measure that are of particular interest are mass-like terms for the gauge-invariant modes of the gauge fields. Since these mass terms come with dimensional parameters they are significant in the context of dimensional transmutation. Moreover, the existence of local gauge-invariant mass terms on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ could be related to Schwinger-Dyson calculations of the soft gluon mass. Finally, we argue that there is a kinematic regime in which the theory can be approximated by a 4d Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory. This result can be used to draw similarities between the mechanism of confinement in four and (2+1) dimensions.

Abstract:Gauge-invariant quantum fields are constructed in an Abelian power-counting renormalizable gauge theory with both scalar, vector and fermionic matter content. This extends previous results already obtained for the gauge-invariant description of the Higgs mode via a propagating gauge-invariant field. The renormalization of the model is studied in the Algebraic Renormalization approach. The decomposition of Slavnov-Taylor identities into separately invariant sectors is analyzed. We also comment on some non-renormalizable extensions of the model whose 1-PI Green's functions are the flows of certain differential equations of the homogeneous Euler type, exactly resumming the dependence on a certain set of dim. 6 and dim. 8 derivative operators. The latter are identified uniquely by the condition that they span the mass and kinetic terms in the gauge-invariant dynamical fields. The construction can be extended to non-Abelian gauge groups.

For linear gauges, it can be elevated to a symmetry of the quantum theory and used in the construction of the quantum effective action. Abstract:We develop BRST quantization of gauge theories with a soft gauge algebra on spaces with asymptotic boundaries. The asymptotic boundary conditions are imposed on background fields, while quantum fluctuations about these fields are described in terms of quantum fields that vanish at the boundary. This leads us to construct a suitable background field formalism that is generally applicable to soft gauge algebras, and therefore to supergravity. We define a nilpotent BRST charge that acts on both the background and the quantum fields, as well as on the background and quantum ghosts. When the background is restricted to be invariant under a residual isometry group, the background ghosts must be restricted accordingly and play the role of the parameters of the background isometries. Requiring in addition that the background ghosts will be BRST invariant as well then converts the BRST algebra into an equivariant one. The background fields and ghosts are then invariant under the equivariant transformations while the quantum fields and ghosts transform under both the equivariant and the background transformations. We demonstrate how this formalism is suitable for carrying out localization calculations in a large class of theories, including supergravity defined on asymptotic backgrounds that admit supersymmetry.

Abstract:Into a geometric setting, we import the physical interpretation of index theorems via semi-classical analysis in topological quantum field theory. We develop a direct relationship between Fedosov's deformation quantization of a symplectic manifold X and the Batalin–Vilkovisky (BV) quantization of a one-dimensional sigma model with target X. This model is a quantum field theory of AKSZ type and is quantized rigorously using Costello's homotopic theory of effective renormalization. We show that Fedosov's Abelian connections on the Weyl bundle produce solutions to the effective quantum master equation. Moreover, BV integration produces a natural trace map on the deformation quantized algebra. This formulation allows us to exploit a (rigorous) localization argument in quantum field theory to deduce the algebraic index theorem via semi-classical analysis, i.e., one-loop Feynman diagram computations.

Abstract:We construct a gauge theory model on the 4-dimensional ρ -Minkowski space-time, a particular deformation of the Minkowski space-time recently considered. The corresponding star product results from a combination of Weyl quantization map and properties of the convolution algebra of the special Euclidean group. We use noncommutative differential calculi based on twisted derivations together with a twisted notion of noncommutative connection. The twisted derivations pertain to the Hopf algebra of ρ -deformed translations, a Hopf subalgebra of the ρ -deformed Poincaré algebra which can be viewed as defining the quantum symmetries of the ρ -Minkowski space-time. The gauge theory model is left invariant under the action of the ρ -deformed Poincaré algebra. The kinetic part of the action is found to coincide with the one of the usual (commutative) electrodynamics.

Abstract:Nonassociative modifications of general relativity, GR, and quantum gravity, QG, models naturally arise as star product and R-flux deformations considered in string/ M-theory. Such nonassociative and noncommutative geometric and quantum information theories were formulated on phase spaces defined as cotangent Lorentz bundles enabled with nonassociative symmetric and nonsymmetric metrics and nonlinear and linear connection structures. We outline the analytic methods and proofs that corresponding geometric flow evolution and dynamical field equations can be decoupled and integrated in certain general off-diagonal forms. New classes of solutions describing nonassociative black holes, wormholes, and locally anisotropic cosmological configurations are constructed using such methods. We develop the Batalin-Vilkovisky, BV, formalism for quantizing modified gravity theories, MGTs, involving twisted star products and semi-classical models of nonassociative gauge gravity with de Sitter/affine/ Poincar'{e} double structure groups. Such theories can be projected on Lorentz spacetime manifolds in certain forms equivalent to GR or MGTs with torsion generalizations etc. We study the properties of the classical and quantum BV operators for nonassociative phase spaces and nonassociative gauge gravity. Recent results and methods from algebraic QFT are generalized to involve nonassociative star product deformations of the anomalous master Ward identity. Such constructions are elaborated in a nonassociative BV perspective and for developing non-perturbative methods in QG.

Abstract:We use Hamilton-Jacobi theory to construct a gauge-invariant zero-energy candidate ground state for canonically quantized Yang-Mills theory with a "nonlinear normal" factor ordering, generalizing an analogous ordering introduced by Moncrief and Ryan for problems with finitely many degrees of freedom. Invariance under spatial rotations and translations is immediate; boost invariance remains under investigation. The motivation is to find a model for constructing a candidate ground state in general relativity, canonically quantized a la the Ashtekar variables. We seek to avoid replicating some of the more troublesome features of the Kodama state, inherited from the Chern-Simons state.
