Abstract:We construct an intertwining map from the oscillator representation to the tensor product of two degenerate principal series of G and G′ which form a reductive dual pair in the sense of Howe. We derive results on local theta correspondence for the dual pairs (O(p, q), Sp(2q, R)), (U(p, q), U(q, q)) and (Sp(p, q), O*(4q)), where p⩾q. We also describe the correspondence completely for the pairs (O(p, q), SL(2, R)), (U(p, q)U(1, 1)), and (Sp(p, q), O*(4)).

Abstract:We give an elementary introduction to Classical Invariant Theory and its modern extension "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory", commonly known as the theory of local theta correspondence. We explain the two fundamental assertions of the theory: the Howe duality conjecture and the Kudla-Rallis conservation relation conjecture. We give a status report on the problem of explicitly describing local theta correspondence in terms of Langlands-Vogan parameters. We conclude with a discussion on a certain problem of automatic continuity, which manifests unity of the theory in algebraic and smooth settings.

Abstract:An “automatic continuity” question has naturally occurred since Roger Howe established the local theta correspondence over R \mathbb R : Does the algebraic version of local theta correspondence over R \mathbb R agree with the smooth version? Abstract:For every genuine irreducible admissible smooth representation $\pi$ of the metaplectic group $\widetilde{{\rm Sp}}(2n)$ over a $p$-adic field, and every smooth oscillator representation $\omega_\psi$ of $\widetilde{{\rm Sp}}(2n)$, we prove that the tensor product $\pi\otimes\omega_\psi$ is multiplicity free as a smooth representation of the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}(2n)$. Similar results are proved for general linear groups and unitary groups.

Abstract:We prove the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for the symplectic-metaplectic case under some assumptions. This is the last case of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. We also prove two of Prasad's conjectures on the local theta correspondence in the almost equal rank case.

Abstract:S.-Y. Pan decomposes the uniform projection of the Weil representation of a finite symplectic-odd orthogonal dual pair, in terms of Deligne-Lusztig virtual characters, assuming that the order of the finite field is large enough. In this paper we use Pan's decomposition to study the theta correspondence for this kind of dual pairs, following the approach of Adams-Moy and Aubert-Michel-Rouquier. Our results give the theta correspondence between unipotent representations and certain quadratic unipotent representations.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:Using theta correspondence, we obtain a classification of irreducible representations of an arbitrary even orthogonal group (i.e. the local Langlands correspondence) by deducing it from the local Langlands correspondence for symplectic groups due to Arthur. Moreover,we show that our classifications coincide with the local Langlands correspondence established by Arthur and formulated precisely by Atobe-Gan for quasi-split even orthogonal groups.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from $2$ and $G$ be either an odd special orthogonal group ${\rm SO}_{2r+1}(F)$ or a symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2r}(F)$. In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem for $G$. Namely, for given two irreducible admissible generic representations of $G$ with the same central character, if they have the same local gamma factors twisted by irreducible supercuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ for all $1 \leq n \leq r$ with the same additive character, these representations are isomorphic. Using the theory of Cogdell, Shahidi, and Tsai on partial Bessel functions and the classification of irreducible generic representations, we break the barrier on the rank of twists $1 \leq n \leq 2r-1$ in the work of Jiang and Soudry, and extend the result of Q. Zhang, which was achieved for all supercuspidal representations in characteristic $0$.

Abstract:Let (G,H) be one of the equal rank reductive dual pairs (Mp_{2n},O_{2n+1}) or (U_n,U_n) over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well-known that the theta correspondence establishes a bijection between certain subsets, say R(G) and R(H), of the tempered duals of G and H. We prove that this bijection arises from an equivalence between the categories of representations of two C*-algebras whose spectra are R(G) and R(H). This equivalence is implemented by the induction functor associated to a Morita equivalence bimodule (in the sense of Rieffel) which we construct using the oscillator representation. As an immediate corollary, we deduce that the bijection is functorial and continuous with respect to weak inclusion. We derive further consequences regarding the transfer of characters and preservation of formal degrees.

Abstract:In his article "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory" (J.A.M.S., 1989, Vol 2), Roger Howe established a correspondence between representations of a dual pair of reductive groups. This correspondence is known as Howe's correspondence or local theta correspondence. In my paper "Unitary Representations and Theta Correspondence for Classical Group of Type I"(to appear in J. Func. Anal.), we proved that theta correspondence over the real field preserves unitarity under certain restrictions, generalizing some results of Jian-Shu Li (Invent. Math., Vol 97, 1989). In this paper, we study the compositions of theta correspondences. Under certain favorable conditions, we prove that the composition of theta correspodence yields unitary representations. We call this process quantum induction. Quantum induction resembles parabolic induction in various ways. Some results in this paper were announced at ICM-2002.
