Abstract:In his article "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory" (J.A.M.S., 1989, Vol 2), Roger Howe established a correspondence between representations of a dual pair of reductive groups. This correspondence is known as Howe's correspondence or local theta correspondence. In my paper "Unitary Representations and Theta Correspondence for Classical Group of Type I"(to appear in J. Func. Anal.), we proved that theta correspondence over the real field preserves unitarity under certain restrictions, generalizing some results of Jian-Shu Li (Invent. Math., Vol 97, 1989). In this paper, we study the compositions of theta correspondences. Under certain favorable conditions, we prove that the composition of theta correspodence yields unitary representations. We call this process quantum induction. Quantum induction resembles parabolic induction in various ways. Some results in this paper were announced at ICM-2002.

Abstract:In this paper, we parametrize certain irreducible supercuspidal representations of U(1,1) and U(2) via explicit induction data. The parametrization depends on traceless elements of negative valuation in a quadratic extension of base field. We use the lattice model of the Weil representation to determine which traceless elements are involved in the theta correspondence for reductive dual pair U(1,1) and U(2).

Abstract:We construct an intertwining map from the oscillator representation to the tensor product of two degenerate principal series of G and G′ which form a reductive dual pair in the sense of Howe. We derive results on local theta correspondence for the dual pairs (O(p, q), Sp(2q, R)), (U(p, q), U(q, q)) and (Sp(p, q), O*(4q)), where p⩾q. We also describe the correspondence completely for the pairs (O(p, q), SL(2, R)), (U(p, q)U(1, 1)), and (Sp(p, q), O*(4)).

Abstract:S.-Y. Pan decomposes the uniform projection of the Weil representation of a finite symplectic-odd orthogonal dual pair, in terms of Deligne-Lusztig virtual characters, assuming that the order of the finite field is large enough. In this paper we use Pan's decomposition to study the theta correspondence for this kind of dual pairs, following the approach of Adams-Moy and Aubert-Michel-Rouquier. Our results give the theta correspondence between unipotent representations and certain quadratic unipotent representations.

Abstract:We study the theta lifting for real unitary groups and completely determine the theta lifts of tempered representations. In particular, we show that the theta lifts of (limits of) discrete series representations can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the weakly fair range. This extends a result of J.-S. Li in the case of discrete series representations with sufficiently regular infinitesimal character, whose theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the good range.

Abstract:In this paper, towards the unitary dual problem for classical groups, we propose a refinement of a conjecture of M. Tadić: A representation of good parity is unitary if and only if it is of Arthur type; and a conjectural description of the whole unitary dual. We verify them for representations of corank at most $3$ for symplectic or split odd special orthogonal groups, based on Tadić's classification. To this end, we develop new algorithms to determine whether a given irreducible representation is of Arthur type and give an inductive approach to classify the family of unitary representations that are of Arthur type. As applications, we carry out the explicit list on representations of Arthur type with corank at most $3$, and classify several new families of representations of Arthur type.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:For Brylinski-Deligne covering groups of an arbitrary split reductive group, we consider theta representations attached to certain exceptional genuine characters. The goal of the paper is to determine when a theta representation has exactly a one-dimensional space of Whittaker functionals, in which case it is called distinguished. For this purpose, we first give effective lower and upper bounds for the dimension of Whittaker functionals for general theta representations. As a consequence, the dimension in many cases can be reduced to simple combinatorial computations, e.g., the Kazhdan-Patterson covering groups, or covering groups whose complex dual group is of adjoint type. In the second part of the paper, we consider covering groups of certain simply-connected groups and give necessary and sufficient condition for the theta representation to be distinguished. There are subtleties arising from the relation between the rank and the degree of the covering group. However, in each case we will determine the exceptional character such that its associated theta representation is distinguished.

Abstract:We give an elementary introduction to Classical Invariant Theory and its modern extension "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory", commonly known as the theory of local theta correspondence. We explain the two fundamental assertions of the theory: the Howe duality conjecture and the Kudla-Rallis conservation relation conjecture. We give a status report on the problem of explicitly describing local theta correspondence in terms of Langlands-Vogan parameters. We conclude with a discussion on a certain problem of automatic continuity, which manifests unity of the theory in algebraic and smooth settings.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct certain unipotent representations for the real orthogonal group and the metaplectic group in the sense of Vogan. Our construction is based on quantum induction which involves the compositions of even number of theta correspondences. In particular, our results imply that there are irreducible unitary representations attached to each special nilpotent orbit.

Abstract:In this paper we observe that isomorphism classes of certain metrized vector bundles over P^1-{0,infinity} can be parameterized by arithmetic quotients of loop groups. We construct an asymptotic version of theta functions, which are defined on these quotients. Then we prove the convergence and extend the theta functions to loop symplectic groups. We interpret them as sections of line bundles over an infinite dimensional torus, discuss the relations with loop Heisenberg groups, and give an asymptotic multiplication formula.
On Unitary 2-Group Symmetries

Abstract:Global internal symmetries act unitarily on local observables or states of a quantum system. In this note, we aim to generalise this statement to extended observables by considering unitary actions of finite global 2-group symmetries $\mathcal{G}$ on line operators. We propose that the latter transform in unitary 2-representations of $\mathcal{G}$, which we classify up to unitary equivalence. Our results recover the known classification of ordinary 2-representations of finite 2-groups, but provide additional data interpreted as a type of reflection anomaly for $\mathcal{G}$.

Abstract:We study the quasi-admissibility and raisablility of some nilpotent orbits of a covering group. In particular, we determine the degree of the cover such that a given split nilpotent orbit is quasi-admissible and non-raisable. The speculated wavefront sets of theta representations are also computed explicitly, and are shown to be quasi-admissible and non-raisable. Lastly, we determine the leading coefficients in the Harish-Chandra character expansion of theta representations of covers of the general linear groups.

Abstract:We introduce `canonical' classes in the Selmer groups of certain Galois representations with a conjugate-symplectic symmetry. They are images of special cycles in unitary Shimura varieties, and defined uniquely up to a scalar. The construction is a slight refinement of one of Y. Liu, based on the conjectural modularity of Kudla's theta series of special cycles. For 2-dimensional representations, Theta cycles are (the Selmer images of) Heegner points. In general, they conjecturally exhibit an analogous strong relation with the Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjectures in rank 1, for which we gather the available evidence.
