Abstract:We prove some results which extend the classical theory, due to Hecke-Schoeneberg, of the transformation laws of theta functions. Although our results are classical in natural, they were suggested by recent work involving modular-invariance in conformal field theory.

Abstract:String theory is a candidate theory in particle physics for reconciling quantum mechanics and general relativity, i.e. quantum gravity. Moreover, it’s also a candidate of TOE (“theory of everything”), describing all the known fundamental forces and matters in our universe in a mathematically complete system. In conventional theories, elementary particles are mathematical points, whereas, the fundamental objects in string theory are 1-dimensional oscillating lines or loops.

Abstract:We prove several formulas related to Hodge theory and the Kodaira-SpencerKuranishi deformation theory of Kähler manifolds. As applications, we present a construction of globally convergent power series of integrable Beltrami differentials on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and use an iteration method to construct global canonical families of holomorphic (n, 0)-forms on the deformation spaces of Kähler manifolds.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:In this paper we observe that isomorphism classes of certain metrized vector bundles over P^1-{0,infinity} can be parameterized by arithmetic quotients of loop groups. We construct an asymptotic version of theta functions, which are defined on these quotients. Then we prove the convergence and extend the theta functions to loop symplectic groups. We interpret them as sections of line bundles over an infinite dimensional torus, discuss the relations with loop Heisenberg groups, and give an asymptotic multiplication formula.

Abstract:We give an elementary introduction to Classical Invariant Theory and its modern extension "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory", commonly known as the theory of local theta correspondence. We explain the two fundamental assertions of the theory: the Howe duality conjecture and the Kudla-Rallis conservation relation conjecture. We give a status report on the problem of explicitly describing local theta correspondence in terms of Langlands-Vogan parameters. We conclude with a discussion on a certain problem of automatic continuity, which manifests unity of the theory in algebraic and smooth settings.

Abstract:The Hodge bundle $\omega$ over a modular curve is a square-root of the canonical bundle twisted by the cuspidal divisor, or a theta characteristic, due to the Kodaira--Spencer isomorphism. We prove that, in most cases, a section of a theta characteristic $\nu$ (or any odd power of it) different from $\omega$ is a noncongruence modular form. On the other hand, we show how $\nu\ne\omega$ gives rise to a ``twisted'' analogue of the diagonal period map to a Siegel threefold, whose difference attributes to the stackiness of the moduli of abelian surfaces $\mathcal{A}_{2}$. Some questions on the Brill--Noether theory of the modular curves are answered.

Abstract:In his article "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory" (J.A.M.S., 1989, Vol 2), Roger Howe established a correspondence between representations of a dual pair of reductive groups. This correspondence is known as Howe's correspondence or local theta correspondence. In my paper "Unitary Representations and Theta Correspondence for Classical Group of Type I"(to appear in J. Func. Anal.), we proved that theta correspondence over the real field preserves unitarity under certain restrictions, generalizing some results of Jian-Shu Li (Invent. Math., Vol 97, 1989). In this paper, we study the compositions of theta correspondences. Under certain favorable conditions, we prove that the composition of theta correspodence yields unitary representations. We call this process quantum induction. Quantum induction resembles parabolic induction in various ways. Some results in this paper were announced at ICM-2002.

Abstract:We introduce `canonical' classes in the Selmer groups of certain Galois representations with a conjugate-symplectic symmetry. They are images of special cycles in unitary Shimura varieties, and defined uniquely up to a scalar. The construction is a slight refinement of one of Y. Liu, based on the conjectural modularity of Kudla's theta series of special cycles. For 2-dimensional representations, Theta cycles are (the Selmer images of) Heegner points. In general, they conjecturally exhibit an analogous strong relation with the Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjectures in rank 1, for which we gather the available evidence.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, we prove a sharp upper bound on moments of shifted Dirichlet L‐functions. We use this to obtain conditional upper bounds on high moments of theta functions. Both of these results strengthen theorems of Munsch, who proved almost sharp upper bounds for these quantities. The main new ingredient of our proof comes from a paper of Harper, who showed the related result ∫0T|ζ(1/2+it)|2k≪kT(logT)k2 for all k⩾0 under the Riemann Hypothesis. Finally, we obtain a sharp conditional upper bound on high moments of character sums of arbitrary length.

Abstract:The theta-block conjecture proposed by Gritsenko--Poor--Yuen in 2013 characterizes Siegel paramodular forms which are simultaneously Borcherds products and additive Jacobi lifts. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for two new infinite series of theta blocks of weights 2 and 3. The proof is based on Scheithauer's classification of reflective modular forms of singular weight.

Abstract:There are a number of sporadic coefficient-vanishing results associated with theta series, which suggest certain underlying patterns. By expanding theta powers as linear combinations of products of theta functions, we present two strategies that will provide a unified treatment. Our approaches rely on studying the behavior of products of two theta series under the action of the huffing operator. For this purpose, some explicit criteria are given. We may use the presented methods to not only verify experimentally discovered coefficient-vanishing results, but also to produce a series of general phenomena.

Abstract:In this paper, we parametrize certain irreducible supercuspidal representations of U(1,1) and U(2) via explicit induction data. The parametrization depends on traceless elements of negative valuation in a quadratic extension of base field. We use the lattice model of the Weil representation to determine which traceless elements are involved in the theta correspondence for reductive dual pair U(1,1) and U(2).

Abstract:In this paper we study the theta lifting for loop groups and extend the classical tower property established by S. Rallis to the loop setting. As an application we obtain cusp forms on loop groups, and we give the first example where the cusp forms constructed using this method are nonvanishing.

Abstract:We introduce and study a family of power series, which we call Theta series, whose coefficients are in the tensor square of a quantum loop algebra. They arise from a coproduct factorization of the T-series of Frenkel--Hernandez, which are leading terms of transfer matrices of certain infinite-dimensional irreducible modules over the upper Borel subalgebra in the category O of Hernandez--Jimbo. We prove that each weight component of a Theta series is polynomial. As applications, we establish a decomposition formula and a polynomiality result for R-matrices between an irreducible module and a finite-dimensional irreducible module in category O. We extend T-series and Theta series to Yangians by solving difference equations determined by the truncation series of Gerasimov--Kharchev--Lebedev--Oblezin. We prove polynomiality of Theta series by interpreting them as associators for triple tensor product modules over shifted Yangians.

Theta lifts to certain cohomological representations of indefinite orthogonal groups

Abstract:Howe and Tan (1993) investigated a degenerate principal series representation of indefinite orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}(V)$ and explicitly described its composition series. They showed that there exists a unique unitarizable irreducible submodule $\Pi$, which is isomorphic to a cohomological representation. In this paper we construct orthogonal automorphic forms belonging to $\Pi$ as theta liftings of holomorphic $\mathrm{Mp}_2(\mathbb{R})$ cusp forms by using the Borcherds' method. We will give a useful observation in computing their Fourier expansions that enables us to give very precise descriptions of the liftings specially belonging to $\Pi$. We will also determine the cuspidal supports of the liftings, then confirm the square integrability of those automorphic forms on orthogonal groups.
