Abstract:Together with seven known sesquiterpenes, a new guaiane, a new furanoeremophilane, and a new eudesmane were isolated from the roots of Ligularia veitchiana. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The bioactivities of three known guaiane sesquiterpenes were determined.

Abstract:An abietane diterpenoid, triptobenzene Y and six sesquiterpene polyol esters, wilforsinines C–H, together with 14 known compounds, have been isolated from the roots of Tripterygium wilfordii. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses. The quinone reductase (QR) induction assay indicated that two compounds showed moderate QR-inducing activities at concentrations of 25μM and 50μM, respectively.

Abstract:A new sesquiterpene, 7α-H-11-hydroxyeremophil-1(10)-en-2-one (1), together with 14 known sesquiterpenoids (2–15), were isolated from the extract of the whole plant of Ligularia fischeri. Among them, compounds 2–6 and 15 were isolated from Ligularia fischeri for the first time. The new compound was characterized by means of spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS, and the known ones were established by comparing their NMR data with those of the corresponding compounds in the literature.

Abstract:Two new guaianolides, namely, 3β,8α-dihydroxy-13-methoxyl-4(14),10(15)-dien-(1αH,5αH,6β H,11βH)-12,6-olide (1) and 3β,8α-dihydroxy-13-methoxyl-4(14),10(15)-dien-(1αH,5αH,6β H,11αH)-12,6-olide (2), together with six known guaianolides, 8-hydroxyzaluzanin C, austricin, chlorojanerin, cynaropicrin, chlorohyssopifolin E and chlorohyssopifolin A were isolated from the aerial parts of Saussurea alata. Abstract:From a MeOH extract of powdered roots of Wikstroemia indica, we isolated a new guaian-type sesquiterpene (1) and two known guaian-type sesquiterpenes [oleodaphnal (2), 1alpha,7alpha,10alphaH-guaia-4,11-dien-3-one (3)], together with twelve known compounds: (+)-arctigenin, (+)-matairesinol, (+)-trachelogenin, (+)-nortrachelogenin, (+)-hinokinin, (+)-kusunokinin, 7-methoxycoumarin, 7-hydroxycoumarin (umbelliferone), daphnogitin, daphnoretin, salicifoliol, and (-)-pinoresinol. The structure of compound 1 was determined to be 4,10,11-guaiatrien-3-one-14-oic acid, by the analyses of spectral data.

Abstract:New eremophilane sesquiterpenes, 6 beta-sarracinoyloxy-1 beta,10 beta-epoxy-furanoeremophilane (1), 6 alpha-angeloyloxy-10 beta H-furanoeremophil-1-one (2), 1 alpha-hydroxy-9-deoxycacalol (3), and 1 beta-hydroxy-11(R,S)-8-oxoeremophil-6,9-dien-12-al (4a+4b), together with five known sesquiterpenes (5-9) were isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Ligularia macrophylla. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 2D NMR techniques, and the structure of 1 was confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment. The compounds were also evaluated for cytotoxic activity against human lung carcinoma (A-549) and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and were found to show only very weak cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Four new sesquiterpene lactones, (1 S,5 R,6 S,7 S,8 R,9 R,10 S,11 S)-6-acetoxy-9-hydroxy-4-oxo-pseudoguai-2(3)-en-12,8-olide, (1 S,2 R,5 R,6 S,7 R,8 S,10 R)-6-acetoxy-2-ethoxy-4-oxo-pseudoguai-11(13)-en-12,8-olide, (1 S,2 R,5 R,6 S,7 R,8 S,10 R)-6-acetoxy-2-hydroxy-4-oxo-pseudoguai-11(13)-en-12,8-olide, and 14-acetoxy-1 β,5 α,7 αH-4 β-hydroxy-guai-9(10),11(13)-dien-12,8 α-olide, along with 26 known sesquiterpene lactones, were isolated from the whole plants of Inula hookeri C. B. Clarke. Their structures were established based on spectroscopic methods including HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR, and CD techniques. All compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against HepG2, HeLa, PC-3, and MGC-803 cell lines by CCK-8 assay. Some of the isolates, especiallly pseudoguaianolides and guaianolides, exhibited significant cytotoxicities against these four examined cell lines.

Abstract:The aerial parts of Artemisia sieversiana afforded, in addition to β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and daucosterol, two novel lignans as well as one known and three new guaianolides. The roots of Inula racemosa gave β-sitosterol, daucosterol and isoalantolactone. The structures were determined by a combination of spectral methods (IR, EIMS, 1H and 13C NMR, DEPT, COSY, NOESY and HETCOR). All isolates were subjected to antifungal tests. Isoalantolactone, a major sesquiterpene lactone of I. racemosa, was found to be active against the human pathogenic fungi, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Geotrichum candidum, Candida tropicalis and C. albicans at concentrations of 50, 50, 25, 25 and 25 μg\ml, respectively. The taxonomic significance of the characterized constituents is discussed briefly.

Abstract:Phytochemical investigation of the roots of LIGULARIA VEITCHIANA has resulted in the characterization of two new eremophilanolides together with beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, taraxol, and liguhodgsonal whose structure was further confirmed by the (13)C-NMR techniques. The structures of the new constituents were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and shown to be 1beta, 10beta-epoxy-6beta(2'-hydroxymethylacryloyloxy)-8beta-hydroxy-eremophila-7(11)-en-12,8alpha-olide ( 1) and 1beta, 10beta-epoxy-6beta-(2'-hydroxymethylacryloyloxy)-8beta-ethoxy-eremophila-7(11)-en-12,8alpha-olide ( 2).
