Abstract:Recently, we have described a successful synthesis route to obtain mesoporous quartz and its high-pressure polymorph coesite by nanocasting at high pressure using periodic mesostructured precursors, such as SBA-16 and FDU-12/carbon composite as starting materials. Periodic mesoporous high-pressure silica polymorphs are of particular interest as they combine transport properties and physical properties such as hardness that potentially enable the industrial use of these materials. In addition, synthesis of mesoporous crystalline silica phases can allow more detailed geology-related studies such as water/mineral interaction, dissolution/crystallization rate and the surface contribution to the associated thermodynamic stability (free energy and enthalpy) of the various polymorphs and their crossover. Here, we present results of synthesis of mesoporous stishovite from cubic large-pore periodic mesoporous silica LP-FDU-12/C composite as precursor with an fcc lattice. We describe the synthesis procedure using multi-anvil apparatus at 9 GPa (about 90,000 atm) and temperature of 500 °C. The synthetic mesoporous stishovite is, then, characterized by wide and small-angle X-ray diffraction, scanning/transmission electron microscopy and gas adsorption. Results show that this new material is characterized by accessible mesopores with wide pore size distribution, surface area of ~45 m2/g and volume of pores of ~0.15 cm3/g. Results from gas adsorption indicate that both porosity and permeability are retained at the high pressures of synthesis but with weak periodic order of the pores.

Synthesis of polycrystalline sintered stishovite and its physical property measurements

Abstract:We synthesized polycrystalline sintered stishovite at pressure of 15 GPa and temperature of 1473 K. The starting material was a silica glass rod with diameter of 2.5 mm and height of 2.7 mm in. This was enclosed in a platinum capsule. The recovered sample was a whitish translucent rod with diameter of about 2 mm and height of about 2.3 mm. The recovered sample was examined by micro-focused X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman spectroscopic measurements. The results indicate that the recovered sample is a pure polycrystalline stishovite. Ultrasonic measurements were carried out at ambient conditions. We determined compressional wave velocity of 11.776 km/s and shear wave velocity of 7.174 km/s. We measured bulk density of this sintered stishovite by Archimedian method. The density is 4.282 g/cm3. Using these parameters, we calculated elastic moduli of this sample: Bulk modulus, 300 GPa; shear modulus, 220 GPa; Youngs modulus, 531 GPa; Poissons ratio, 0.204. These values are consistent with those obtained by previous studies. We have also conducted X-ray diffraction measurements under low and high temperature be-tween 90 and 1000 K at BL02B2, SPring-8. We are going to report temperature dependence of thermal expansivity of stishovite in the session.

Abstract:We report on the structural transformations of carbon filled SBA-16 mesoporous silica at 10 Gigapascal pressure and temperatures between 25 and 1800 degrees C in a multi-anvil apparatus. The silica begins to crystallize in the coesite structure at 400 degrees C under retention of the mesophase order. An irregular mesostructure of crystalline coesite is observed for samples treated at 800 degrees C. Formation of crystalline stishovite and graphite under mesoscale phase separation is observed at 1000 degrees C and 1300 degrees C. From a temperature of 1400 degrees C, the stishovite phase transforms into coesite and graphite transforms into diamond, respectively. The diamond phase adopts a micron-sized platelet-like morphology at 1400-1800 degrees C. The diamond crystallite size was determined to be 9-12nm.

Abstract:Diffusion of Si and O in single crystal stishovite was examined at pressures of 14.0–21.5 GPa and temperatures of 1673–2073 K. Self-diffusion coefficients of Si (DSi) and O (DO) were determined as DSi [m2/s]=2.4×10−12exp⁡{−(237[kJ/mol]+6.0[cm3/mol]×P)/RT} and DO [m2/s]=7.2×10−11exp⁡{−(263[kJ/mol]+4.8[cm3/mol]×P)/RT}, respectively, where P is pressure (in GPa), T is absolute temperature (in K) and R is the ideal gas constant. It was revealed that diffusion of Si is approximately one order of magnitude slower than that of O and, thus, Si is the rate-controlling element for plastic deformation of stishovite. Si diffusion in stishovite is assessed to be at least three orders of magnitude slower than that in bridgmanite under mid-mantle conditions. Therefore, it is anticipated that highly viscous SiO2-rich components subducted into the lower mantle persist as the seismic reflectors for long term without mixing up with the bridgmanite-dominated surrounding mantle.

Abstract:Nano-polycrystalline coesite block has been synthesized by domestic hinge type cubic press by using high-purity micrometer α-SiO2 as raw material under 5 GPa and 1000 ℃.In this process,the micrometer α-SiO2 has been transformed directly into coesite polycrystal.X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the bulk material contains coesite single phase only.The scanning electron microscopic picture shows that the average size of the synthesized coesite crystal is about 100 nm with a microhardness of 1406 MPa.

Abstract:Coesite nanocrystals have been synthesized from periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) with (CH(2))(2) bridges heated at 300 degrees C for 150 min and 12 GPa. The crystals are not sintered, single crystalline, and have diameters of ca. 100-300 nm. Below 300 degrees C, an amorphous non-porous organosilica glass was obtained. Heating above 300 degrees C at 12 GPa results in the rapid crystal growth and micron size coesite crystals were formed.

Abstract:Periodic mesoporous quartz was synthesized by a generally applicable nanocasting method at industrially achievable pressure (2–4GPa) and temperature (750°C) conditions. The materials have fcc lattice of interconnected spherical mesopores with diameters of ca. 15–18nm, BET surface areas of 234–238m2g−1, and pore volumes of 0.70–0.84cm3g−1. They show exceptional hydrothermal stability of at least 800°C in pure steam which appears suitable for practical applications in petroleum cracking.

Abstract:Surfactant-containing periodic mesostructured silica materials, namely SBA-16 and FDU-12, were studied under pressures between 1 and 4 GPa and temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. At 4 GPa crystallization of coesite can be achieved already at 200 °C. The mild transition of amorphous to crystalline silica is believed to be accomplished by the inbuilt hydroxyl groups present in the starting material. At 2 GPa the crystallization of quartz is accomplished at a temperature of 400 °C. Both quartz and coesite are obtained in nanocrystalline form.

Abstract:Mechanical cleavage, chemical intercalation and chemical vapor deposition are the main methods that are currently used to synthesize nanosheets or monolayers. Here, we propose a new strategy, thermal exfoliation for the fabrication of silica monolayers. Using a variety of state-of-the-art theoretical calculations we show that a stoichiometric single-layer silica with a tetragonal lattice, T-silica, can be thermally exfoliated from the stishovite phase in a clean environment at room temperature. The resulting single-layer silica is dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable with exceptional properties, including a large band gap of 7.2 eV, an unusual negative Poisson's ratio, a giant Stark effect, and a high breakdown voltage. Moreover, other analogous structures like single-layer GeO2 can also be obtained by thermal exfoliation of its bulk phase. Our findings are expected to motivate experimental efforts on developing new techniques for the synthesis of monolayer materials.

Abstract:Under an extreme pressure of 12 GPa, mesoporous coesite can be formed directly from periodic mesoporous silica without the aid of a template. The porous coesite particles obtained from SBA-16 are single crystalline, with a pore size of about 4 nm and about 50 % porosity. The formation can be attributed to the kinetically controlled crystallization of a nonporous elastically strained glasslike silica intermediate (see scheme). Abstract:Using 2-ethyl-1,3,4-trimethylimidazolium as structure-directing agent(SDA), B-substituted STW-type silicate zeolite (B-STW), was synthesized in a concentrated gel at 175 degrees C for 2-5 d. The B-STW sample was characterized by the inductively coupled plasma analysis (ICP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) analyses. The results show that B-STW has weak acidity after removal of SDA and is thermally stable up to 750 degrees C.

Abstract:Regular stibnite (Sb2S3) nanorods with diameters of 20-40 nm and lengths of 220-350 nm have been successfully synthesized by a sonochemical method under ambient air from an ethanolic solution containing antimony trichloride and thioacetamide. The as-prepared Sb2S3 nanorods are characterized by employing techniques including X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and optical diffuse reflection spectroscopy. Microstructural analysis reveals that the Sb2S3 nanorods crystallize in an orthorhombic structure and predominantly grow along the (001) crystalline plane. High-intensity ultrasound irradiation plays an important role in the formation of these Sb2S3 nanorods. The experimental results show that the sonochemical formation of stibnite nanorods can be divided into four steps in sequence: (1) ultrasound-induced decomposition of the precursor, which leads to the formation of amorphous Sb2S3 nanospheres; (2) ultrasound-induced crystallization of these amorphous nanospheres and generation of nanocrystalline irregular short rods; (3) a crystal growth process, giving rise to the formation of regular needle-shaped nanowhiskers; (4) surface corrosion and fragmentation of the nanowhiskers by ultrasound irradiation, resulting in the formation of regular nanorods. The optical properties of the Sb2S3 amorphous nanospheres, irregular short nanorods, needle-shaped nanowhiskers, and regular nanorods are investigated by diffuse reflection spectroscopic measurements, and the band gaps are measured to be 2.45, 1.99, 1.85, and 1.94 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Experiments were performed on amorphous silica at temperatures of 1000°–2850°C and pressures of 9–14 GPa using a 2000‐t uniaxial split‐sphere multianvil apparatus (USSA‐2000). The melting curve of coesite was extended from 8 to 13.7 GPa, and the melting temperatures indicate a slope that is almost independent of pressure. Melting of stishovite was observed at 2850°C and 14 GPa. The triple point for coexisting coesite, stishovite, and melt was located at 2800°C and 13.7 GPa. The coesite‐stishovite phase transition was determined between 2000° and 2800°C and is described by the equation P (GPa) = 5.8(4) + 0.0028(2)T(°C). The resulting dP/dT slope is more than twice that determined in the in situ X ray study of Yagi and Akimoto (1976). The present coesite‐stishovite boundary cannot be predicted by existing thermodynamic data (e.g., Fei et al., 1990), which suggests some uncertainties in the extrapolation of heat capacities of coesite and stishovite at high temperatures. Thermodynamic extrapolations of the metastable melting curves of quartz and coesite show a strongly negative slope and thus are consistent with the proposal that the room temperature amorphization of quartz and coesite results from crossing of the metastable extension of their melting curves.

Abstract:Hydrothermal experiments aiming at the crystal growth of stishovite near ambient pressure and temperature were performed in conventional autoclave systems using 1 M (molar) NaOH, 0.8 M Na2CO3, and pure water as a mineralizing agent. It was found that the hydrothermal metastability of stishovite and coesite is very different from the thermal metastability in all mineralizing agents and that because of this fact crystals could not be grown. While stishovite and coesite are thermally metastable up to 500 and >1000 °C, respectively, their hydrothermal metastability is below 150 and 200 °C, respectively. The thermally induced conversion of stishovite and coesite leads to amorphous products, whereas the hydrothermally induced conversion leads to crystalline quartz. Both stishovite and coesite are minerals occurring in nature where they can be exposed to hydrothermal conditions. The low hydrothermal stability of these phases may be an important factor to explain the rarity of these minerals in nature.

Abstract:WHETHER stishovite, the highest-pressure polymorph of SiO2 known from natural samples, transforms to a denser structure at higher pressures has long been of interest. A suggested transition from rutile to the CaCl2 structure driven by a vibrational-mode instability(1) was supported by the observation of a frequency decrease (softening) of a Raman mode with increasing pressure(2). Subsequent X-ray diffraction measurements provided evidence(3) for stability of the CaCl2 phase near 100 GPa. Electronic-structure calculations predict, however, that the transition occurs at much lower pressure, where a shear modulus vanishes and before the Raman mode softens completely(4). Here we use in situ Raman spectroscopy and a new theoretical model to investigate the high-pressure behaviour of stishovite. At 50 GPa, the pressure dependence of the soft B-1g mode abruptly changes and the E(g) mode splits, as predicted for transformation to the CaCl2 structure. Our results demonstrate that any free silica in the deep mantle (below 1,200-1,500 km) will exist in the CaCl2 structure at considerably lower pressures than previously thought(3).

Abstract:Abstract Shock‐induced transformations of quartz to high‐pressure polymorphs and diaplectic glass are decisive in identifying impact cratering events. Under shock compression, quartz can melt in local hot spots and crystallization of these silica melts under pressure can yield the high‐pressure mineral stishovite. A solid‐state transition to stishovite in relation to the formation of amorphous lamellae was already suggested in the late 1960s, but this idea was never comprehensively proven. Therefore, the mechanism responsible for such an intracrystalline stishovite formation is unknown to date. Herein, crystallographically oriented single crystals of quartz were compressed and decompressed in a membrane‐driven diamond anvil cell. These experiments aim at simulating the pressure paths of natural impacts on the timescale of seconds using compression rates between 0.2 and 0.6 GPa/s and peak pressures between 20 and 37 GPa. During the compression of quartz, the time‐resolved synchrotron X‐ray diffraction patterns reveal the almost simultaneous formation of two high‐pressure polymorphs, the recently identified rosiaite‐structured silica and stishovite. Transmission electron microscopic observations of recovered samples show that stishovite occurs as arrays of uniformly oriented nanometer‐sized crystals in amorphous intracrystalline lamellae. These observations indicate that the numerous stishovite crystals likely nucleated from the structurally similar rosiaite phase and thus inherited their uniform orientation during compression. During decompression, the metastable and non‐quenchable rosiaite‐structured phase collapsed to the amorphous stishovite‐containing lamellae. These findings attest to a novel mechanism of the formation of stishovite in the solid state and provide an explanation for similar microstructural occurrences of stishovite in impact‐metamorphic rocks and shocked meteorites.
