Abstract:Coesite nanocrystals have been synthesized from periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) with (CH(2))(2) bridges heated at 300 degrees C for 150 min and 12 GPa. The crystals are not sintered, single crystalline, and have diameters of ca. 100-300 nm. Below 300 degrees C, an amorphous non-porous organosilica glass was obtained. Heating above 300 degrees C at 12 GPa results in the rapid crystal growth and micron size coesite crystals were formed.

Abstract:Nano-polycrystalline coesite block has been synthesized by domestic hinge type cubic press by using high-purity micrometer α-SiO2 as raw material under 5 GPa and 1000 ℃.In this process,the micrometer α-SiO2 has been transformed directly into coesite polycrystal.X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the bulk material contains coesite single phase only.The scanning electron microscopic picture shows that the average size of the synthesized coesite crystal is about 100 nm with a microhardness of 1406 MPa.

Abstract:Under an extreme pressure of 12 GPa, mesoporous coesite can be formed directly from periodic mesoporous silica without the aid of a template. The porous coesite particles obtained from SBA-16 are single crystalline, with a pore size of about 4 nm and about 50 % porosity. The formation can be attributed to the kinetically controlled crystallization of a nonporous elastically strained glasslike silica intermediate (see scheme). Abstract:We report on the structural transformations of carbon filled SBA-16 mesoporous silica at 10 Gigapascal pressure and temperatures between 25 and 1800 degrees C in a multi-anvil apparatus. The silica begins to crystallize in the coesite structure at 400 degrees C under retention of the mesophase order. An irregular mesostructure of crystalline coesite is observed for samples treated at 800 degrees C. Formation of crystalline stishovite and graphite under mesoscale phase separation is observed at 1000 degrees C and 1300 degrees C. From a temperature of 1400 degrees C, the stishovite phase transforms into coesite and graphite transforms into diamond, respectively. The diamond phase adopts a micron-sized platelet-like morphology at 1400-1800 degrees C. The diamond crystallite size was determined to be 9-12nm.

Abstract:The synthesis of hollow silica spheres with mesopore wall structures via CO2-in-water emulsion templating in the presence of non-ionic PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer surfactants as mesostructure-directing templates has been investigated under various conditions. The successful synthesis of hollow spheres strongly depends on the pressure and density of CO2. The mesoporosity (pore size) and morphology of the silica hollow spheres can be controlled by varying the operating CO2 pressure. Other types of surfactants, such as long chain alkylammonium ions, may also be used to template the porosity of the shells.

Abstract:Periodic mesoporous quartz was synthesized by a generally applicable nanocasting method at industrially achievable pressure (2–4GPa) and temperature (750°C) conditions. The materials have fcc lattice of interconnected spherical mesopores with diameters of ca. 15–18nm, BET surface areas of 234–238m2g−1, and pore volumes of 0.70–0.84cm3g−1. They show exceptional hydrothermal stability of at least 800°C in pure steam which appears suitable for practical applications in petroleum cracking.

Abstract:Surfactant-containing periodic mesostructured silica materials, namely SBA-16 and FDU-12, were studied under pressures between 1 and 4 GPa and temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. At 4 GPa crystallization of coesite can be achieved already at 200 °C. The mild transition of amorphous to crystalline silica is believed to be accomplished by the inbuilt hydroxyl groups present in the starting material. At 2 GPa the crystallization of quartz is accomplished at a temperature of 400 °C. Both quartz and coesite are obtained in nanocrystalline form.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbons synthesized by the film-type replication of colloidal silica and SBA-15 templates are studied by electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption. This synthesis strategy involves the formation of thin carbon film on the pore walls of these templates using resorcinol-crotonaldehyde polymer as carbon precursor. For the silica templates consisting of 20-80 nm colloids this synthesis affords carbons with extremely large pore volumes (5-9 cm(3)/g) and uniform spherical pores reproducing the size of the colloids used. Abstract:Magnetic mesoporous carbon composites with high surface areas and narrow mesopore size distributions were directly replicated from SBA-15 by a simple co-casting method and the amount of incorporated magnetic particles and saturation magnetization value can be easily tuned by changing the added amount of iron source during synthesis. Furthermore, the magnetic mesoporous carbon composites show good acid resistance due to a carbon shell coating structure around the magnetic particles, which is spontaneously formed during the replication process of the mesoporous carbon composites. The characteristics of the as-synthesized magnetic mesoporous carbon composites were examined by X-ray diffraction, N-2 sorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating-sample magnetometry.

Abstract:Isocyanurate-containing silsesquioxane-bridged periodic mesoporous organosilicas (ICS-PMOs) were synthesized by self-assembly of the nonionic surfactant P123, EO20PO70EO20, and trimethoxysilyl-functionalized isocyanurate (ICS-Si) under acidic conditions in the presence of inorganic additives. The ICS-PMOs have been modified by an alkyl-bridged organosilane (i.e., Et-Si; Et = -CH2CH2-) by substituting ICS-Si with Et-Si in the precursors, at various molar ratios, resulting in bifunctionalized PMOs exhibiting two types of bridged groups (ICS-Et-PMOs). The obtained bifunctionalized ICS-Et-PMOs have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen physical sorption, and solid-state Si-29 and C-13 magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy. Experiments show that the ICS-Et-PMOs exhibit hexagonal mesoscopic structures. Increasing the content of the Et-Si functionality in the precursors is found to significantly improve the mesostructural ordering of the product. It is suggested that fluoride anions as additives play an important role in the formation of well-ordered ICS-PMOs and as well the bifunctionalized ICS-Et-PMOs in the presented experiments. The ICS-PMO materials were used to chemically adsorb H2PtCl6, and Pt nanoparticles were subsequently prepared within the mesopores of ICS-PMO by NaBH4 reduction in solution, highlighting the simplicity in exploiting the application of such PMOs in nanomaterials fabrication.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous carbon rods have been obtained in high yield using silica rods as templates. The inorganic salts that are used for the synthesis of the silica templates control the morphology and adjust the wall structure of the mesoporous silica materials and thus of the final carbon rods. The Figure shows a TEM image of a carbon sample synthesized using SBA-15-100 silica as a template.

Abstract:Mesoporous cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheets (about 15 nm in thickness and about 1 mu m in width) with mostly pore sizes of 10-15 nm were obtained by heat treatment of hydrothermally-synthesized hydrothermal products at 300 degrees C. The compositions and morphologies of the hydrothermal products could be tailored by controlling the hydrothermal reaction temperature at a range of 120-200 degrees C and time. Quasi-sheet-like Co(OH)(2) is favored to form at 120 degrees C for 6 h through oriented attachment, and then slice sheets Co(NH3)(5)(ONO)(NO3)(2) and Co(CN)(2)center dot H2O were formed at over 150 degrees C for 6 h in water due to thermodynamic instability. Their sheets become thinner and more decentralized with the extension of the hydrothermal reaction time. The (CH3COO)(2)Co precursor was hydrothermally synthesized in ethanol. All of hydrothermal products were transformed into porous Co3O4 with similar morphologies after heat treatment. Mesoporous Co3O4 nanosheets displayed a Brunauer-EmmettTeller (BET) surface area of about 65 m(2) g(-1). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) results indicated mesoporous Co3O4 nanosheets have good electrochemical properties and show a specific capacitance (C-S) of 880 F g(-1) in 1 M KOH at a current density of 1 A g(-1).

Abstract:From the discovery of mesoporous materials in 1992 at Mobil oil company, these materials are continuously gaining attraction due to their superior properties like tunable pore structure, surface morphology, huge pore volume and ability of easy functionalization. In this paper historical background of mesoporous silica materials and methods which are used to synthesize these materials such as sol-gel method, microwave assisted technique, chemical etching technique, templating approach are discussed. In templating approach a template (structure directing agent) is used to create hollow porous structure but chemical etching technique uses a selective etching agent (basic/acidic) to create mesoporous structure, here no template (soft/hard) is required. Microwave technique is used for rapid synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles. In microwave technique self assembly of organosilane precursors and blockcopolymer and successive hydrothermal treatment is carried out under the microwave oven.

Abstract:Highly ordered ethylene bridged periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials with ultra-large pore sizes up to 14.7 nm were successfully synthesized by using triblock copolymer F127 as a template and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) as a swelling agent. SAXS and TEM measurements show that PMO products have a face-centered cubic (space group of Fm (3) over barm) mesostructure. The influence of reaction temperature and acidity of the solution on the mesostructure of the PMO products were systematically studied. The pore size can be gradually expanded as the temperature decreases, and ordered PMOs can be obtained at a temperature even down to 5 degrees C with a relatively low acidity. As compared with mesoporous silica materials synthesized at identical conditions, our experimental results reveal that different hydrophobicity between precursors, bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane and tetraethyl orthosilicate, may influence the swelling capacity of F127 micelles with TMB as well as the phase behavior of triblock copolymer F127, resulting in the different physicochemical properties of the final products.

Abstract:A series of highly-uniform and mesoporous Co3O4 nanospheres comprising porously-assembled tiny building blocks, and more importantly, with widely tunable sizes from 50 nm up to 500 nm were successfully synthesized for the first time via single facile polyol approach. The crucial synthesizing factors including molecular weight and concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the fraction of cobalt precursor, and the subsequent calcination temperature and time were systematically varied over a very wide range for extensively understanding their effects on growth mechanisms, uniformity and particularly the minimum assembled size. The present unique mesoporous nanoassemblies evidently lead to not only a higher surface-to-volume ratio for a variety of potential applications but a lower operating temperature for CO sensing compared with that reported for a variety of intrinsic or heterogeneous Co3O4 nanostructures. Abstract:1,3,5-trimethyl benzene (TMB) was used as organic swelling agent in O/W emulsions to template ultra-large mesoporous materials using the hydrothermal method. The silicas with well-defined mesopores and hydrothermally robust framework were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and BET surface area analysis. The influence of the quantity of TMB during preparation was studied. It has been found that the TMB/CTAB ratio must be controlled for producing high pore volume materials. Polysulfone (PSU), as the usual extraction agent, was coated on the silicas with the solvent evaporation method to produce a solid separation medium. The adsorptivity and the surface area of the coated MCM were determined: 10% PSU coated MCM adsorbed twice as much phenol as the uncoated material, reaching 0.5 mg/g silica. It was found that the surface area of the coated material decreased rapidly with an increase of the PSU loading.
Pressure-induced Structural Modulations in Coesite

Abstract:Silica phases, SiO2, have attracted significant attention as important phases in the fields of condensed-matter physics, materials science, and (in view of their abundance in the Earth's crust) geoscience. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate that coesite undergoes structural modulations under high pressure. Coesite transforms to a distorted modulated structure, coesite-II, at 22-25 GPa with modulation wave vector q = 0.5b*. Coesite-II displays further commensurate modulation along the y axis at 36-40 GPa and the long-range ordered crystalline structure collapses beyond similar to 40 GPa and starts amorphizing. First-principles calculations illuminate the nature of the modulated phase transitions of coesite and elucidate the modulated structures of coesite caused by modulations along the y-axis direction. The structural modulations are demonstrated to result from phonon instability, preceding pressured-induced amorphization. The recovered sample after decompression develops a rim of crystalline coesite structure, but its interior remains low crystalline or partially amorphous. Our results not only clarify that the pressure-induced reversible phase transitions and amorphization in coesite originate from structural modulations along the y-axis direction, but also shed light on the densification mechanism of silica under high pressure.
