Abstract:Periodic mesoporous quartz was synthesized by a generally applicable nanocasting method at industrially achievable pressure (2–4GPa) and temperature (750°C) conditions. The materials have fcc lattice of interconnected spherical mesopores with diameters of ca. 15–18nm, BET surface areas of 234–238m2g−1, and pore volumes of 0.70–0.84cm3g−1. They show exceptional hydrothermal stability of at least 800°C in pure steam which appears suitable for practical applications in petroleum cracking.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous materials with extremely high hydrothermal stability have been successfully synthesized by a novel and facile approach. Our method is built on the understanding that the hydrothermal treatment process plays an important role in the synthesis of mesoporous materials. It is proposed that in order to use high temperature hydrothermal treatment to increase the inorganic framework cross-linkage, an important requirement is that the organic surfactants must be retained as much as possible to maintain the preformed organic−inorganic composite mesostructure against framework shrinkage during the hydrothermal treatment process. This requirement can be achieved by enhancing the surfactant−silanol interaction at the organic−inorganic interface through adjusting the hydrothermal treatment pH and adding acetic acid (HAc) during the synthesis. When a high temperature (∼200 °C) hydrothermal treatment is employed, ordered mesoporous materials can only be obtained in a hydrothermal treatment pH range of 1−3. When the hydrothermal treatment pH is near the isoelectric point of silica, the highest silanol density on silica walls can entrap the largest amount of surfactants within pores, resulting in highly ordered mesostructured materials. Moreover, the disadvantage of the hydrothermal treatment under strong acidic conditions widely adopted in the literature has been revealed. Compared to previous reports, our approach is simple and does not involve environmentally unfriendly or expensive agents, thus is easy to be scaled up for industrial applications. Most strikingly, the highly ordered mesostructure of aluminosilicate synthesized by our approach can be maintained after steam treatment at 800 °C for 5 h with only a 4.9% decrease in the Brunauer−Emmett−Teller surface area. Our achievements have added new contributions to understanding the preparation of highly ordered and highly stable mesoporous materials, which sheds light on the practical applications of this new family of porous materials in the petroleum and petrochemical industry.

Abstract:Surfactant-containing periodic mesostructured silica materials, namely SBA-16 and FDU-12, were studied under pressures between 1 and 4 GPa and temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. At 4 GPa crystallization of coesite can be achieved already at 200 °C. The mild transition of amorphous to crystalline silica is believed to be accomplished by the inbuilt hydroxyl groups present in the starting material. At 2 GPa the crystallization of quartz is accomplished at a temperature of 400 °C. Both quartz and coesite are obtained in nanocrystalline form.
Understanding of the High Hydrothermal Stability of the Mesoporous Materials Prepared by the Assembly of Triblock Copolymer with Preformed Zeolite Precursors in Acidic Media

Abstract:Mesoporous pure silica (MPS-9) is prepared using an assembly of preformed Silicalite-I nanoclusters with a triblock copolymer surfactant. The results of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and N-2 adsorption show that MPS-9 has a mesostructure that is similar to that of other mesoporous materials prepared from preformed zeolite nanoclusters, such as mesoporous aluminum silicates (MAS-7, MAS-9) and titanium silicate (MTS-9). However, MPS-9 shows weaker hydrothermal stability, in comparison to those other mesoporous materials prepared from preformed zeolite nanoclusters. On the other hand, three AI-SBA-15 samples synthesized from various routes are all much more hydrothermally stable than pure silica SBA-15. The previously proposed factors, including thicker pore walls, a disordered structure, the "salt effect", and zeolite-like connectivity, have been proven to be indeed favorable for the improvement of hydrothermal stability in this study. However, the introduction of heteroatoms (Al or Ti) in mesoporous materials is another favorable factor and can enhance the hydrothermal stability to a greater extent.
Bifunctional Hybrid Mesoporous Organoaluminosilicates with Molecularly Ordered Ethylene Groups.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of crystal-like structurally well-ordered ethylene-containing hybrid mesoporous organoaluminosilicate materials, which exhibit molecular-level periodicity in the pore walls and enhanced hydrothermal stability. Distilled 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethylene (BTEE) was used as the organosilica precursor, aluminum isopropoxide as aluminum source, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as template. The materials are structurally well-ordered and exhibit high surface area (>1300 m(2)/g) and pore volume (>1.10 cm(3)/g). The presence of molecularly ordered ethylene groups was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, (29)Si and (13)C MAS NMR, and Raman spectroscopy. The ethylene groups are thermally stable up to a temperature of 300 degrees C. The presence of ethylene groups enhances the hydrothermal stability in boiling water of both organosilica and organoaluminosilicate materials. The organoaluminosilicate materials possess a bifunctional character arising from the presence of both tetrahedrally coordinated Al and molecularly ordered ethylene groups in their frameworks.

Abstract:Mesoporous Al-MCM-41 materials were synthesized using room temperature ionic liquid 1-cethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C16mim]Br) as a single template and characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, ICP-AES, 27Al MAS NMR and TEM technique. These mesoporous materials exhibit hexagonal p6m pore architectures, and possess high surface area and narrow pore distribution. All aluminum in as-synthesized samples exists in tetrahedral coordination. Upon calcination nearly all aluminum still remains the tetrahedral coordination even when the Si/Al ratio is as low as 15. This indicates that the tetrahedral aluminum of Al-MCM-41 is stable.

Abstract:High temperature condition is helpful to obtain hydrothermally stable mesoporous silica. In this paper, micro-mesoporous silica(designated as TCM-1) and Al-doped mesoporous silica(Al-TCM-1) were synthesized under high temperature. The self-assembly of a-linolenic acid, which transformed to a rigid mesophase template via inter-micelle polymerization, were successfully leveraged to fabricate hydrothermally stable mesoporous silicas that retained a BET surface area of 678 m(2)/g after hydrothermal treatment in boiling water for 5 d. The Si-29 MAS NMR spectra of as-calcined TCM-1 indicates Q(4)silicons[Q(n) = Si(OSi)(n)(OH)(4-n)] are dominating, which can explain the high hydrothermal stability of the material.

Abstract:Silica samples condensed at acidic, neutral and alkaline media in the presence of various inorganic anions have been carefully investigated by 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results show that SO42- and CO32- could effectively improve the degree of silica condensation under neutral and alkaline media. Accordingly, for example, it is designable to synthesize hydrothermally stable and well ordered hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15 with very high degree of silica condensation in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species under neutral condition. As we expected, hexagonal mesoporous silica materials in the presence of sulfate (SBA-15-S) and carbonate species (SBA-15-U) show high degree of silica condensation, giving Q4/Q3 ratios at 6.3 and 4.3, which are much higher than that of conventional SBA-15 (Q4/(Q3+Q2) ratio at 1.8) synthesized in the absence of sulfate and carbonate species. Very interestingly, hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15-S and SBA-15-U shows very high hydrothermal stability, compared with SBA-15. For example, after being treated in 100% steaming at 780°C for 3h, SBA-15-S still remains its mesostructure. In constrast, SBA-15 loses most of the mesostructure. Furthermore, heteroatoms-substituted mesoporous materials such as aluminosilicate (Al-SBA-15-U) could also be synthesized in the presence of urea under neutral condition, and Al-SBA-15-U exhibits extraordinary hydrothermal stability. The unique and novel route for syntheses of hydrothermally stable and well ordered mesoporous silica and aluminosilicate materials in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species would be very important for potential application of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and aluminosilicate materials (Al-SBA-15) as industrially supports and acidic catalysts.
One-step synthesis of hydrothermally stable mesoporous aluminosilicates with strong acidity

Abstract:Using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) and aluminium isopropoxide (AIP) as the reactants, through a one-step nonsurfactant route based on PMHS–TEOS–AIP co-polycondensation, hydrothermally stable mesoporous aluminosilicates with different Si/Al molar ratios were successfully prepared. All samples exclusively showed narrow pore size distribution centered at 3.6nm. To assess the hydrothermal stability, samples were subjected to 100°C distilled water for 300h. The boiled mesoporous aluminosilicates have nearly the same N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and the same pore size distributions as those newly synthesized ones, indicating excellent hydrothermal stability. The 29Si MAS NMR spectra confirmed that PMHS and TEOS have jointly condensed and CH3 groups have been introduced into the materials. The 27Al MAS NMR spectra indicated that Al atoms have been incorporated in the mesopore frameworks. The NH3 temperature-programmed desorption showed strong acidity. Due to the existence of large amount of CH3 groups, the mesoporous aluminosilicates obtained good hydrophobicity. Owing to the relatively large pore and the strong acidity provided by the uniform four-coordinated Al atoms, the excellent catalytic performance for 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene cracking was acquired easily. The materials may be a profitable complement for the synthesis of solid acid catalysts.

Abstract:Herein, we report the direct synthesis of micro–mesoporous silicas using unsaturated anionic surfactant α-linolenic acid as mesophase template. The self-assembly of α-linolenic acid, which could transform to a rigid mesophase template via inner-micellar polymerization when heated, was successfully leveraged to fabricate hydrothermally stable mesoporous silicas at high temperature, which retained a BET surface area of 678m2g−1 after hydrothermal treatment in boiling water for 5days. Different analysis methods, e.g. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, the non-local density functional theory (NLDFT) analysis and transmission electron microscopy, were employed to investigate the mesostructure of as-synthesized samples, which revealed a micro- and mesopores hybrid in one phase. 1H NMR was applied to characterize the α-linolenic acid micellar structure and confirmed that CC bonds have been opened up and polymerization occurred within micelles. The 29Si MAS NMR spectra indicated Q4 silicon is the dominating species, which explains well the high hydrothermal stability of the materials.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous aluminosilicates designated as MAS-3 and MAS-8 with hexagonal mesopores have been hydrothermally synthesized from preformed zeolite L precursors under alkaline and strongly acidic conditions, respectively. MAS-3 and MAS-8 show good thermal and hydrothermal stability. Catalytic results in cracking cumene show that these mesoporous aluminosilicates are more active than conventional mesoporous aluminosilicates (Al-MCM-41). Characterization of infrared, N2 adsorption isotherms, and temperature-programmed-desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) have also been used to investigate these materials and the results indicate that the walls of MAS-3 and MAS-8 contain the primary and secondary structural building units, which might be responsible for the high hydrothermal stability and good activities in catalysis.

Abstract:Mesoporous aluminosilicates (MAS-9) with ordered hexagonal struture have been prepared by assembly of preformed aluminosilicate precursors with a triblock copolymer in strongly acidic media by a two-step procedure. MAS-9 exhibits extraordinarily good hydrothermal stability and high catalytic activities for the cracking of both cumene and 1,3,5-tri-isopropylbenzene. Even after treatment in boiling water for 120 h, MAS-9 continues to show a large surface area (680 m(2)/g) and high catalytic activities. Furthermore, this two-step strategy could be used as a new general method for the preparation of mesoporous aluminosilicate materials under strongly acidic conditions.

Abstract:An alkali-assisted cooperative assembly process of two different templating systems with aluminosilicate precursors is described. A highly ordered mesoporous zeolite with the 2D hexagonal symmetry mesospores and MFI zeolitic framework walls is synthesized. This method also allows the preparation of ZSM-5 with c- or b-axis-aligned mesopores. The materials have promising catalytic activities for organic reactions involving bulky molecules.

Abstract:Recently, we have described a successful synthesis route to obtain mesoporous quartz and its high-pressure polymorph coesite by nanocasting at high pressure using periodic mesostructured precursors, such as SBA-16 and FDU-12/carbon composite as starting materials. Periodic mesoporous high-pressure silica polymorphs are of particular interest as they combine transport properties and physical properties such as hardness that potentially enable the industrial use of these materials. In addition, synthesis of mesoporous crystalline silica phases can allow more detailed geology-related studies such as water/mineral interaction, dissolution/crystallization rate and the surface contribution to the associated thermodynamic stability (free energy and enthalpy) of the various polymorphs and their crossover. Here, we present results of synthesis of mesoporous stishovite from cubic large-pore periodic mesoporous silica LP-FDU-12/C composite as precursor with an fcc lattice. We describe the synthesis procedure using multi-anvil apparatus at 9 GPa (about 90,000 atm) and temperature of 500 °C. The synthetic mesoporous stishovite is, then, characterized by wide and small-angle X-ray diffraction, scanning/transmission electron microscopy and gas adsorption. Results show that this new material is characterized by accessible mesopores with wide pore size distribution, surface area of ~45 m2/g and volume of pores of ~0.15 cm3/g. Results from gas adsorption indicate that both porosity and permeability are retained at the high pressures of synthesis but with weak periodic order of the pores.

Abstract:From the discovery of mesoporous materials in 1992 at Mobil oil company, these materials are continuously gaining attraction due to their superior properties like tunable pore structure, surface morphology, huge pore volume and ability of easy functionalization. In this paper historical background of mesoporous silica materials and methods which are used to synthesize these materials such as sol-gel method, microwave assisted technique, chemical etching technique, templating approach are discussed. In templating approach a template (structure directing agent) is used to create hollow porous structure but chemical etching technique uses a selective etching agent (basic/acidic) to create mesoporous structure, here no template (soft/hard) is required. Microwave technique is used for rapid synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles. In microwave technique self assembly of organosilane precursors and blockcopolymer and successive hydrothermal treatment is carried out under the microwave oven.

Abstract:In comparison to industrial zeolite catalysts, ordered mesoporous materials exhibit relatively low hydrothermal stability, which severe!y binders their practical applications in industrial catalytic reactions such as petroleum refining. In this paper, several new routes for improving hydrothermal stability of ordered mesoporous materials are summarized, including (1) hydrothermally stable mesoporous aluminosilicates and titanosilicates assembled from preformed zeolite precursors; (2) high-temperature synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica-based materials with high silica condensation; (3) introduction of promoters for silica condensation in the synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials. Furthermore, we focus on synthesis of mesoporous zeolites because mesoporous zeolites have the advantages of both zeolites and mesoprous materials. In this paper, a facile route for synthesis of mesoporous zeolites from cationic polymers is described.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silicas (SBA-15 or MCM-41) have been directly hydrothermally synthesized at high temperatures (160–180 °C) by using a solo hydrocarbon surfactant (P123 or CTAB). 1H NMR spectra and thermogravimetric (TG) curves showed that these hydrocarbon surfactants decomposed during the preparation process at such high temperatures. Accordingly, we proposed that the surfactant micelle plays an important role during the cooperative self-assembly of the silicates and surfactants in the initial stage for the formation of basic mesostructure, and it is no longer indispensable in the subsequent hydrothermal treatment at high temperature.
A Novel Method To Synthesize Amorphous Silica−Alumina Materials with Mesoporous Distribution without Using Templates and Pore-Regulating Agents

Abstract:In this study, a novel sol-gel method is used to synthesize amorphous silica-alumina materials with a narrow mesoporous distribution and various Si/Al molar ratios without using any templates and pore-regulating agents. During the preparation procedure, only inexpensive inorganic salts were used as raw materials, instead of expensive and harmful alkoxides. The precursor sol was dried at room temperature in a vacuum box kept at 60 mmHg until it began to form the gel. The results of a nitrogen sorption experiment indicate that the synthesized materials with different Si/Al molar ratios have similar mesoporous distributions (within 2-12 nm). Moreover, it was found that the material's pore size distribution remains at a similar value during the heat treatment from room temperature to 550 degreesC. On the basis of the nitrogen sorption, TEM, and AFM characterization results, a formation mechanism of mesopores which accounts for the experimental data is also suggested. This suggested mechanism involves rearrangement of the primary particles during the drying process to form the precursors of the similarly sized mesopores. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, thermal analysis (TG/DTA), Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and AFM. The results of Al-27 and 29Si MAS NMR indicate that the distribution of silicon and aluminum in the synthesized materials is more uniform and homogeneous than that in the mixed oxides prepared via the traditional sol-gel method even at high alumina contents. The type and density of the acid sites were studied using pyridine adsorption-desorption FTIR spectroscopy. It was shown that the acidity of the synthesized materials is higher than that of the silica-alumina materials prepared by conventional methods.

Abstract:Hydrothermally stable mesoporous aluminosilicates Al-SBA-1 with hierarchical pore structure have been successfully synthesized under alkaline condition at 120 °C by employing organic mesomorphous complexes of polyelectrolyte (poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)) and cationic surfactant (hexadecyl pyridinium chloride (CPC)) as template. The Si/Al ratio could be as high as 5 and the incorporation of Al into the silica framework did not disturb the well-ordered cubic Pm ̅3n mesostructure. Meanwhile, the incorporation of Al could greatly increase the specific surface area and pore volume of the samples. The Al-SBA-1 materials exhibited a high hydrothermal stability and remained stable even after being treated in boiling water for 10 days. The catalytic activity of the Al-SBA-1 materials was investigated by employing the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of toluene with benzyl alcohol as a model reaction and they exhibited excellent catalytic property due to the incorporated acid sites and the hierarchically mesoporous structure.
