Abstract:Small pore (∼2.6 nm) thick-walled (7.7 nm) cage-like cubic mesoporous silica materials SBA-16 (ST-SBA-16) have been synthesized by using oligomeric surfactant Brij700 (polyoxyethylene (100) stearyl ether, C18H37EO100) with ultra-long hydrophilic chains. Their ordered mesostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen sorption analysis. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) results show that ST-SBA-16 products have large numbers of silanol groups. The mesoscopic ordering of ST-SBA-16 can be greatly improved by the addition of suitable amount of co-surfactants, such as 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). The effects of the synthesis parameters on the structure properties of ST-SBA-16 have also been systematically investigated. It is shown that the total pore volume can be enlarged from 0.31 to 0.51 cm3g−1 by the addition of TMB, pore diameter can be augmented from 2.6 to 4.0 nm by increasing the synthesis temperature from 5 to 40 °C and the surface area can be effectively tailored by changing the hydrothermal treatment time and the calcination temperature.
Highly efficient synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica materials with controllable microporosity using surfactant mixtures as templates

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.

Abstract:Ti-SBA-16 mesoporous silica with a cubic Im3m structure has been successfully synthesized through prehydrolysis of a silica precursor in the presence of a tri-block copolymer F127 under acidic condition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the highly ordered mesostructure was maintained even at the high loading of titanium up to 5.5 (bulk molar ratio SiO 2 /TiO 2 ). UV–vis and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the titanium species was highly dispersed in the silica framework with tetrahedral coordinate and octahedral coordinate, respectively. N 2 -adsorption data exhibit that the BET surface, pore size and pore volume were maintained with an increase of titanium species loading for this cubic Im3m mesoporous composite. SEM image shows its amorphous morphology. The synthesis of mesoporous TiO 2 -containing SBA-16 composite with a cubic Im3m structure will open new applications for catalysts.

Abstract:Mesostructured silica materials of SBA-16 type were synthesized under varying conditions affecting the pore size distribution. The alpha(s)-plot method allows us to identify two populations of intrawall pores and measure their respective specific volumes. A semiquantitative treatment of these data yields an estimate for the intrawall pore radius. These results are discussed and related to the behavior of the long polar chains of the F127 surfactant in the synthesis gel.
Semi-fluorinated Surfactant Syntheses of Ordered Porous Materials with Tailorable Pore Sizes

Abstract:Novel ordered mesoporous silica-based materials (JLU-14 and JLU-15) with tailorable size are successfully synthesized by changing crystallization temperatures in both strongly acidic media and neutral conditions using semi-fluorinated surfactant [FSO-100, CF3(CF2)(4)-(EO)(10)] as a template. JLU-14 and JLU-15 show much higher hydrothermal and mechanical stability than those of MCM-41, which are assigned to their relatively thicker mesoporous walls. Characterization of samples by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N-2 adsorption shows that the pore sizes of JLU-14 and JLU-15 are estimated to vary from micropore to mesopore (1.6-4.0 nm) with various crystallization temperatures (room temperature to 100degreesC). Furthermore, heteroatoms such as Ti species are effectively introduced into mesoporous silica of JLU-14 from various routes, and catalytic data show that Ti-JLU-14 assembled from preformed TS-1 nanoclusters is very active. Moreover, the semi-fluorinated surfactant syntheses are not limited to the use of FSO-100, and many semi-fluorinated surfactants are candidates only if they can effectively form regular micelles in solution. Therefore, semi-fluorinated surfactant synthesis is a new route to prepare a series of stable ordered mesoporous silica and heteroatom-incorporated silica materials with tailorable sizes.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica with Ia (3) over bard structure has been successfully prepared by using mixed surfactants of commercially available nonionic block copolymer P123 (EO(20)PO(70)EO(20)) and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as structure-directing agents through an acid-catalyzed silica sol-gel process. XRD, TEM, and N(2) sorption measurements show that the products have highly ordered bicontinuous cubic mesostructure with high surface area (similar to 770 m(2)/g), large pore volume (similar to 1.5 cm(3)/g) and uniform pore size (similar to 10 nm). Effects of preparation parameters on the formation of the mesostructure have been extensively investigated. It is found that the molar ratios of SDS/P123 between 2.1 and 2.5 and that of silicic species to P123 in the range from 40 to 75 are favorable for the formation of highly ordered Ia (3) over bard mesostructure. Prolonging hydrothermal treatment time leads to almost unchanged cell parameters of the products, whereas there is obvious increase of the pore sizes and pore volume. The results show that resultant template-free mesoporous silica products have excellent thermal stability, and they are more stable in N2 atmosphere than in air. Morphologies of the resultant materials can be further controlled by adding inorganic salt (such as Na(2)SO(4)) into the mixed surfactants system. Coral- and petaline-like mesoporous silica with continuous skeletons can be obtained. Understanding this synthesis system might be useful for economical and large-scale production of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica with a 3D hexagonal structure was synthesized using mixed cationic CnTMBr (n=12, 14, 16, 18) and amphoteric biological surfactants sodium N-dodecyl glycine (SDG) at a molar ratio of 8:2. Synthesis proceeded with hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) under acidic conditions, followed by aging in an alkaline medium. The synthesized products were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen sorption analysis. Mesoporous silica with pore diameter of about 9 nm was obtained using C16TMBr or C18TMBr and SDG, as mixed templates. The presence of the amphoteric biological surfactant SDG was responsible for formation of the 3D hexagonal structure.
High-temperature synthesis of stable ordered mesoporous silica materials by using fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures.

Abstract:Highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica materials (JLU-20) with uniform pore sizes have been successfully synthesized at high temperature (150-220degreesC) by using fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures. The fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures combine the advantages of both stable fluorocarbon surfactants and ordered hydrocarbon surfactants, giving ordered and stable mixed micelles at high temperature (150-220degreesC). Mesoporous JLU-20 shows extraordinary stability towards hydrothermal treatment (100% steam at 800degreesC for 2 h or boiling water for 80 h), thermal treatment (calcination at 1000degreesC for 4 h), and toward mechanical treatment (compressed at 740 MPa). Transmission electron microscopy images of JLU-20 show well-ordered hexagonal arrays of mesopores with one-dimensional (M) channels and further confirm that JLU-20 has a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal (P6mm) mesostructure. Si-29 HR MAS NMR spectra of as-synthesized JLU-20 shows that JLU-20 is primarily made up of fully condensed Q(4) silica units (delta = - 112 ppm) with a small contribution from incompletely cross-linked Q(3) (delta = - 102 ppm) as deduced from the very high Q(4)/Q(3) ratio of 6.5, indicating that the mesoporous walls of JLU-20 are fully condensed. Such unique structural features should be directly attributed to the high-temperature synthesis, which is responsible for the observed high thermal, hydrothermal, and mechanical stability of the mesoporous silica materials with well-ordered hexagonal symmetry. Furthermore, the concept of "high-temperature-synthesis" is successfully extended to the preparation of three-dimensional (3D) cubic mesoporous silica materials by the assistance of a fluorocarbon surfactant as a co-template. The obtained material, designated JLU-21, has a well-ordered cubic Im3m mesostructure with fully condensed pore walls and shows unusually high hydrothermal stability, as compared with conventional cubic mesoporous silica materials such as SBA-16.
Anionic Surfactant Induced Mesophase Transformation to Synthesize Highly Ordered Large-Pore Mesoporous Silica Structures

Abstract:Successive mesophase transformation induced by an anionic surfactant such as sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) has been demonstrated to fabricate four kinds of large pore mesoporous silica materials in a triblock copolymer F127 surfactant assembly system. The transformation of the highly ordered mesostructures from face-centered cubic (space group Fm (3) over barm) to body-centered Im (3) over barm then towards two-dimensional (2-D) hexagonal p6m and eventually to cubic bicontinuous Ia (3) over bard symmetries has been achieved by tuning the amount of AOT and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). Characterization by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N-2 sorption isotherms reveals that all mesoporous silica structures have highly ordered regularity in large domains and possess high surface areas, large pore volumes and uniform pore sizes. The expansion of hydrophobic volume in the amphiphilic Pluronic F127 surfactant associated with AOT and TMB molecules in an acidic media is attributed to the observed mesophase transformation. A further swelling of the surfactant micelles can be achieved by adding TMB molecules into the mixed AOT and F127 surfactants system due to their synergistic solubility enhancement, which gives rise to a long-range ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous silica structure with very large cell parameter (a = 16.5 nm) and pore size (similar to 12 nm). The understanding of the blend-surfactant assembly mechanism will lead to a more rational approach for economical and large-scale production of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Worm-like mesoporous silica materials are synthesized in both acidic (JLU-11) and neutral (JLU-12) media using a semi-fluorinated surfactant of CF3(CF2)5(EO)14 as a template. After introduction of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) in the synthesis, ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica materials (JLU-11(o) and JLU-12(o)) are obtained. The additive of TMB in the synthesis of mesoporous materials (JLU-11(o) and JLU-12(o)) is actually used as an effective agent for improving the order of mesostructure for the samples, rather than a swelling agent for the expansion of mesopore size, which is quite different from the results of mesoporous materials templated from hydrocarbon surfactants (MCM-41 and SBA-15). Furthermore, the ordering improvement of the samples is well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N2 isotherms.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous carbon FDU-16 rhombic dodecahedral single crystals with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im (3) over barm) have been successfully synthesized by employing an organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) and phenol/formaldehyde resol in basic aqueous solution. Synthetic factors (including reaction time, temperature, and stirring rate) are explored for controlling the formation of rhombic dodecahedral single crystals. The optimal stirring rate and the reaction temperature are 300 +/- 10 rpm and similar to 66 degrees C, respectively. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and ultramicrotomy are applied to study the fine structures of the carbon single crystals. The mesopores are arranged in body-centered cubic symmetry throughout the entire particle. Surface steps are clearly observed in the {110} surface, which suggests a layer-by-layer growth of the mesoporous carbon FDU-16 single crystals. Cryo-SEM results from the reactant solution confirm the formation of resol/F127 unit micelles, further supporting the layer-by-layer growth process. The mesoporous carbon FDU-16 single crystals grow up to the final size of 2-4 mu m within 2 days. These findings may have consequences for the growth mechanism of other carbon materials in aqueous solution; moreover, the high-quality single crystals also have potential applications in nanodevice technologies.

Abstract:In this study, typical mesoporous hexagonal rod-typed SBA-15 was successfully transformed into spherical shape with additional dendrimers, namely Dendritic Fibrous SBA-15 (DFSBA-15) by employing microwave-assisted microemulsion system. Physiochemical properties of DFSBA-15 were greatly influenced by aging temperature, urea/TEOS ratio, co-surfactant types, and aging time. It was found that the co-surfactant types were insignificant in controlling the pore size, while the aging conditions (temperature and time) were significant in controlling the fiber density. The analysis results (XRD, N2 physisorption, FTIR, and TEM) confirmed the optimal conditions for DFSBA-15 synthesis were at aging temperature of 100 °C, urea/TEOS ratio of 0.5, n-butanol as co-surfactant, and aging time of 12 h. The as-synthesized optimized DFSBA-15 was compared with the conventional SBA-15 via XRD, N2 physisorption, FTIR, CO2-TPD, NH3-TPD, TGA, TEM, and FESEM-EDX. As compared, DFSBA-15 rendered vast accessibility to the adsorption sites, higher basicity (≈86% enhancement) and acidity (≈66% enhancement), abundant siliceous framework and higher thermal stability (≈19% enhancement), owing to its radially oriented pores which elongated to the outer surface from the nucleus of its sphere. The outcome of this study anticipated the wide applications of DFSBA-15 in catalysis and biomedical fields by revealing the facile protocols of optimal DFSBA-15 synthesis.

Abstract:Abstract The high surface area of mesoporous silica SBA-15 has been synthesized successfully by hydrothermal treatment with direct addition of PVA, triblock copolymer (P123) as a direct structure agent and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor. The mesoporous silica SBA-15 have been characterized with nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Measurement of nitrogen sorption indicated that with the addition of PVA, the surface area is increased but the pore volume and pore diameter is not significantly. The short time of hydrothermal treatment (20 h) and using x-ray diffraction, showed that the morphological structure of silica SBA-15 can be changed to a orthorhombic crystal system. The result of the FTIR and SEM-EDX characteristic indicated the functional groups and morphology of the SBA-15 with a narrow pore size distribution. The BET method has exhibited the largest surface area 1726 m 2 /g, pore volume 1.4 cm 3 /g, and pore diameter 3.2 nm. It can be suggested that the silica mesoporous SBA-15 will have potential application prospect in catalysis, storage, and adsorbent.

Abstract:Silica samples condensed at acidic, neutral and alkaline media in the presence of various inorganic anions have been carefully investigated by 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results show that SO42- and CO32- could effectively improve the degree of silica condensation under neutral and alkaline media. Accordingly, for example, it is designable to synthesize hydrothermally stable and well ordered hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15 with very high degree of silica condensation in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species under neutral condition. As we expected, hexagonal mesoporous silica materials in the presence of sulfate (SBA-15-S) and carbonate species (SBA-15-U) show high degree of silica condensation, giving Q4/Q3 ratios at 6.3 and 4.3, which are much higher than that of conventional SBA-15 (Q4/(Q3+Q2) ratio at 1.8) synthesized in the absence of sulfate and carbonate species. Very interestingly, hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15-S and SBA-15-U shows very high hydrothermal stability, compared with SBA-15. For example, after being treated in 100% steaming at 780°C for 3h, SBA-15-S still remains its mesostructure. In constrast, SBA-15 loses most of the mesostructure. Furthermore, heteroatoms-substituted mesoporous materials such as aluminosilicate (Al-SBA-15-U) could also be synthesized in the presence of urea under neutral condition, and Al-SBA-15-U exhibits extraordinary hydrothermal stability. The unique and novel route for syntheses of hydrothermally stable and well ordered mesoporous silica and aluminosilicate materials in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species would be very important for potential application of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and aluminosilicate materials (Al-SBA-15) as industrially supports and acidic catalysts.

Abstract:In this paper we describe how pore-structure modification can be achieved in a highly ordered fashion through the use of bolaform surfactants containing a rigid unit in the hydrophobic chain. The silicate mesophase, SBA-8, synthesized using bolaform surfactants at room temperature, is a two-dimensional (2-D) pore structure with a centered rectangular lattice (space group cmm, 1 < a/b < root 3), which has no reported lyotropic liquid crystal analogue. SBA-8 is thermally stable in air, and the surfactant can be removed by calcination to yield a mesoporous material with a high surface area(>1000 m(2)/g), The unit cell parameter of the silicate mesostructure can be varied by adding gemini surfactants or by changing reaction temperature; a 2-D silicate mesophase (M alpha, a/b > root 3) and high quality hexagonal MCM-41 (p6mm, a/b = root 3) can be obtained. Hydrothermal transformation of SBA-8 into MCM-41 takes place, confirming the intermediate nature of the SBA-8 mesophase.
Design and Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Silica Materials with High Degree of Silica Condensation at High Temperature from a Mixture of Polymer Surfactant with Small Organic Ammonium.

Abstract:Thermal stability on a mixture of triblock polymer (P123) and fluorocarbon surfactant (FC-4) in acidic media for synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials has been carefully investigated by NMR spectroscopy at various treated temperatures (RT-180 degrees C) and the templating mechanism of the mixture on high-temperature synthesis has been proposed. Accordingly, we have designed fluorocarbon-free templates for syntheses of ordered mesoporous silica materials at high temperatures. As expected, ordered mesoporous silica materials with high degree of silica condensation are synthesized at high temperatures from these designed templates.
Nonionic Triblock and Star Diblock Copolymer and Oligomeric Surfactant Syntheses of Highly Ordered, Hydrothermally Stable, Mesoporous Silica Structures

Abstract:A family of highly ordered mesoporous (20-300 Angstrom) silica structures have been synthesized by the use of commercially available nonionic alkyl poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomeric surfactants and poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers in acid media. Periodic arrangements of mescoscopically ordered pores with cubic 1m (3) over bar m, cubic Pm (3) over bar m (or others), 3-d hexagonal (P6(3)/mmc), 2-d hexagonal (p6mm), and lamellar (L-alpha) symmetries have been prepared. Under acidic conditions at room temperature, the nonionic oligomeric surfactants frequently form cubic or 3-d hexagonal mesoporous silica structures, while the nonionic triblock copolymers tend to form hexagonal (p6mm) mesoporous silica structures. A cubic mesoporous silica structure (SBA-11) with Pm (3) over bar m diffraction symmetry has been synthesized in the presence of C16H33(OCH2CH2)(10)OH (C16EO10) surfactant species, while a 3-d hexagonal (P6(3)/mmc) mesoporous silica structure (SBA-12) results when C18EO10 is used. Surfactants with short EO segments tend to form lamellar mesostructured silica at room temperature. Hexagonal mesoporous silica structures with d(100) spacings of 64-77 Angstrom can be synthesized at 100 degrees C by using oligomeric nonionic surfactants. Highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica structures (SBA-15) with unusually large d(100) spacings of 104-320 A have been synthesized in the presence of triblock poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) copolymers. SBA-15 mesoporous structures have been prepared with BET surface areas of 690-1040 m(2)/g, pore sizes of 46-300 Angstrom, silica wall thicknesses of 31-64 Angstrom, and pore volumes as large as 2.5 cm(3)/g. A novel cubic (Im (3) over bar m) cage-structured mesoporous silica structure (SBA-16) with a large cell parameter (a = 176 ii) has been synthesized using triblock copolymers with large PEO segments. The EO/PO ratio of the copolymers can be used to control the formation of the silica mesophase: lowering this ratio of the triblock copolymer moieties promotes the formation of lamellar mesostructured silica, while higher ratios favor cubic mesostructured silica. Cubic mesoporous structures are also obtained when star diblock copolymers are used as structure-directing agents. The calcined ordered mesoporous silicas reported in this paper an thermally stable in boiling water for at least 48 h. The assembly of the inorganic and organic periodic composite materials appears to lake place by a hydrogen bonding (S-0 H+)(X-I+) pathway. The assembly race r increases with increasing concentration of [H+] and [Cl-], according to the kinetic expression r = k[H+](0.31)[Cl-](0.31).
Syntheses of High-Quality Mesoporous Materials Directed by Blends of Nonionic Amphiphiles under Nonaqueous Conditions

Abstract:A rapid solvent evaporation approach combined with the blends of nonionic amphiphiles as the structure-directing agents (SDA) has been demonstrated to direct the formation of high-quality mesoporous silica materials with two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal or 3D cubic mesostructures. By using oligometric alkyl-ethylene oxide surfactant Brij 35 (C12H25EO23) as a co-template, high-quality hexagonal (p6m) mesoporous silica can be prepared by using triblock poly(ethylene oxide)- b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) co-polymer Pluronic P123, EO20PO70EO20, as a template in ethanol media. A highly ordered cubic (space group Im3m) mesoporous silica is obtained by using poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(butylene oxide)- b-poly(ethylene oxide) co-polymer polyglycol B50-6600, EO39BO47EO39, as a template and Brij 35 as a co-template. The SDA composed of triblock co-polymer and a small amount of nonionic surfactant can increase the efficiency of assembly of organic and inorganic hybrid species and result in the quality improvement of the silica mesostructure. Interestingly, by using B50-6600 mixed with a large amount of Brij 35 as the SDA, a limited mesophase transition from cubic (space group Im3m) to 2D hexagonal (p6m) is first observed. Generally, the amphiphile blend approach can increase the total pore volumes, BET surface areas of the mesoporous materials, and reduce their microporosities.
