Abstract:This paper introduces the 40th IPhO experiment test,which consists of two independent tasks: measure the wavelength of a diode laser by means of diffraction on the sharp edge of a razor blade and measure the birefringence of mica.Based on the standard data supplied by the competition organization,solutions of the two problems are given with brief comments.
Thermal conductivity measurement of phase-change material near melting point based on perturbation method

Abstract:A new one-dimensional radial model was established based on the Stefan model. With the application of perturbation, the relationship between the thermal conductivity and the evolution of phase change interface was deduced. According to this relationship, a test system was designed to determine the thermal conductivity near the melting point of phase change materials. Barium hydroxide that was commonly used as materials in heat storage system was selected to obtain the thermal conductivity on the phase interface evolution at three boundary temperatures of 356, 361 and 366 K. The results show that the three average thermal conductivities are 0.673, 0.658 and 0.651 W?m?1?K?1, respectively. During the measurement, the control of boundary temperature is required, and the boundary heat flux needn't be measured, and multiple sets of thermal conductivity can be obtained from a single test with high accuracy, so the proposed method has good applicability.

Abstract:Self-cooling phase-transition units were built and tested to successfully carryout pressure shift freezing, high pressure thawing and subzero temperature microbial destruction kinetics. The design of these equipment has been progressively improved over the years as highlighted in this paper. Phase transition data on grape & apple juices, and sodium chloride (20%) & glucose solutions (20%) in Ice I were gathered and modeled using Simon-like and polynomial equations. Factors influencing the Ice I and water to Ice III phase transition position were evaluated, and found to be mainly affected by the solute in the aqueous solution. For pressure shifting freezing and pressure assisting freezing to Ice III, water and 20% sodium chloride solution were successfully employed and verified as cooling media for creating the temperature change pathway of potato and carrot. Using sodium chloride solution (20%) as the cooling medium, the phase transition pathway of apple juice and grape juice under high pressure for the phase transition of Ice I and metastable water to Ice III was established. This could be used in kinetic studies. The developed cooling unit concepts can use in any commercial high pressure equipment for subzero temperature treatment of foods without externally supplied cooling.

Abstract:Research interest in thermocell technology has been increasingly occurring due to its large Seebeck coefficient (similar to 1 mV/K) and flexible structure, which are its unique advantages for use in wearable devices directly converting thermal energy into electricity. It is timely and critical to investigate the technology to potentially overcome the technological drawbacks of thermocell such as its relatively low power density and limited overall energy efficiency. In this paper, the correlation between the performance of a Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) thermocell and ion concentrations are studied through factorial experiments. Solubility tests are conducted to obtain the maximum concentration. Activity coefficient is found non-negligible in the Nernst equation. The saturation line calculated through concentration solubility product shows relatively close agreement with experimental results. Total concentration, as well as the concentration ratio of ions, have a significant effect on the thermocell performance. At the optimised concentration point on the saturation line, power density, Seebeck coefficient and efficiency respectively increase by 7.38%, 8.93% and 5.69%. And the mass of solute decreases by 12.64%, compared with the widely used 1:1 concentration ratio. Results demonstrate to improve the power density of thermocell, the solution needs to be saturated and the ion concentration ratio should be taken into account.

Abstract:The thermal efficiency of solar molten salt receivers is vital to solar power tower systems. Yet, the related test methods at large-scale application level is still missing. In this paper, a practical method based on direct normal irradiance for the evaluation of thermal efficiency is developed and validated with experimental data. This method mines operating parameters of solar receivers under different irradiance conditions of close-to interval days without affecting the routine control process of the plant. To fully consider the effects of the heliostat field, test time, and ambient conditions, the practical method is further revised, where the thermal efficiency differences of 3.38% and 3.34% are observed at 11:00-11:30 on March 17 and March 22, respectively. Lastly, the design-point condition of the solar receiver is taken into consideration, and the final thermal efficiency (so-called levelized thermal efficiency) reaches 84.20%. This work will facilitate assessing engineering designs at a relatively fair level experimentally and developing practical high-efficiency solar molten salt receivers.
Experimental and Theoretical Constraints on Ph Measurements with an Iridium Oxide Electrode in Aqueous Fluids from 25 to 175 °C and 25 MPa

Abstract:In-situ measurement of pH at elevated temperatures and pressures is of major importance for investigating chemical and biochemical systems in extreme environments. Based on the performance of the newly developed IrO x electrode at 25 °C, we initiated a series of experiments to test the electrode at elevated temperatures (100 to 175 °C) and high pressure (25 MPa). The experiment was carried out in a titanium flow-through reactor. Our results revealed good pH response at 100, 150 and 175 °C, with good Nernstian slopes at 100 and 150 °C. Although a greater-than-Nernstian response was observed at 175 °C, the factors that cause this difference are attributed to the accuracy of calculations of the distribution of aqueous species rather than alteration of the IrO x surface. A key problem that may limit applications of the IrO x electrode at elevated temperatures and pressures is the noticeable shift in E° during the 175 °C (25 MPa) experiments and between experiments with similar conditions at 150 °C. The results of tests from 25 °C to elevated temperatures provide highly useful information on the reversibility and functionality of the IrO x -pH sensor with implications for the suitability of its use under challenging chemical and physical conditions.

Abstract:The experimental contents, test questions analysis and competition results analysis of the final test questions of the 35th Chinese Physics Olympiad Competition for middle school students were introduced.The 1st question was to measure the Young modulus and the refractive index of optical glass material, which could be divided into three parts:measuring the wavelength of semiconductor laser using Lowell method, measuring the Young modulus of optical glass strip using single slit diffraction method, and measuring the refractive index of thick optical glass sheet.The 2nd question was an electricity black box, students should judge the structure and properties of the components, and measure the vacuum permittivity and the relative permittivity of the given medium by the circuit of the black box and the permittivity measuring instrument.The design of the test questions was strong, and the grades were well differentiated.It was suggested that students should pay attention to the use of basic experimental instruments, the experimental skills, and the flexible application of basic physics principles.

Abstract:A one-dimensional enthalpy method considering natural convection in the liquid was developed to study the freezing process of water with the third-kind boundary condition. The model was verified by indoor experiments and can be of use to determine the relationship between the U-value of integrated-collector-storage (ICS) solar water heater and the thickness of frozen ice formed in it when exposed to the cold weather condition for a certain period of time. Typical calculations results were presented with respect to the diurnal cold winter weather conditions of some cities in China.

Abstract:For on-orbit radiometric calibration of infrared (IR) satellite instruments, we have developed a blackbody source whose temperature can be accurately determined by use of miniature phase change cells to provide fixed points. The temperatures and reproducibility of six phase change cells containing H2O, Ga–Sn alloy, Ga–Zn alloy, phenyl salicylate (PS), succinonitrile, and Ga were accurately determined by the measurement of the phase change plateaux. The points were measured using the quasiadiabatic vacuum measurement system, which was developed by the National Institute of Metrology, China. The reproducibility time span of the Ga fixed point was as long as six years. Results indicated that the reproducibility values of multiple phase-change run-off point temperatures of H2O, Ga–Sn alloy, Ga–Zn alloy, PS, succinonitrile, and Ga were 2.0, 3.6, 1.5, 3.5, 2.9, and 3.1 mK, respectively. Furthermore, a strong linear relation was observed between the heating power and the run-off temperature. With decreasing heating power, the temperature of the plateau decreased and approached the defined fixed-point value. All simulation results of the miniature fixed points were consistent with the experimental data.

Abstract:The design of a low temperature test chamber was required to be dropped to-30 ℃ in a given time.The air temperature could be stabilized at a set value through computer control system.After assembling the low test unit,several experiments were carried out for study the unsteady heat transfer characteristics on the chamber insulating layer.As the analysis of experiment date,the change of the heat load from the insulating structure with the time could be expressed by exponential predigest form and the interior temperature field was discussed for this one-dimension plate heat transfer problem.

Abstract:Flat-plate solar collector is vulnerable to the freezing-damage. But the study of the antifreeze performance of the flat-plate solar collector is rarely reported in the published literatures. This paper presents a model with high precision to simulate the cooling and freezing process of flat-plate solar collector exposed to cold ambient air and conducts a prototype experiment to validate the model. Based on the validated model, factors influencing the antifreeze performance of flat-plate solar collector are investigated. Besides, the antifreeze effect of introducing TIM transparent honeycomb (TIM: transparent insulation materials) in the flat-plate collector is studied numerically. Results show that narrowing the pipe space, increasing the pipe diameter or header diameter and reducing the emissivity of absorber and glass-cover are the effective ways of enhancing the antifreeze performance of flat-plate collector. Meanwhile, employing TIM transparent honeycomb can significantly improve the antifreeze performance of flat-plate collector and can put off the completely frozen time of the collector by 2.5 h. Abstract:Based on the methods of simulating electronic apparatus with a heating copper block, controlling wind temperature with an oil pump loop and measuring wind velocity with a pitot tube and an inclined micro-manometer etc, a performance test system of thermosyphon heat sink was set up. The system tests the temperature on the surface of electronic apparatus for a thermosyphon heat sink by changing heat sink's power, wind velocity and wind temperature. Research conclusions show this new thermosyphon heat sink has a good performance and can meet the cooling require of high thermal current density(8.56×10~4 w/m~2) of electronic apparatus. With its excellent precision and reliability, the performance test system provides an important means for improvement design of thermosyphon heat sink.

Abstract:A transient global model was used to obtain the solution of a thermal field within the entire furnace during a unidirectional solidification process for photovoltaics. The melt–solid interface shape was obtained by a dynamic interface tracking method. The thermal stress distribution in the silicon ingot was solved using the displacement-based thermo-elastic stress model. Furthermore, several different melt–solid interface shapes were obtained by using different growth velocities, and then the thermal stresses for different solidification times were compared. The simulation results suggested that the crucible constraint should be reduced and a longer solidification time should be used for growing a silicon ingot with low thermal stress and low dislocation density.

Abstract:On the basis of an accurate solution for the thermal transfer problem of one dimensional semi-infinite size,a general solution with a coefficient needing to be determined is given.Using conditions to determine solution for the problem,a transcendental equation including the coefficient needing to be determined is obtained.Applying numerical method to solve the transcendental equation,thus an accurate solution for the thermal transfer problem is received.Calculation results showed that the values of the accurate solution accords well with the values of the approximate solution in a certain scope of the parameter.

Abstract:The experimental study of an integrated collector storage (ICS) solar water heater with transparent honeycomb plate and boosting reflector is reported. The water tank has a right-angled triangle cross section and its back and sides are insulated with 30 mm polystyrene foam. The tank has two absorption surfaces: the bottom one is heated by a boosting reflector, and the upper one is covered with a 5 cm thick transparent honeycomb plate and a 2 mm thick acryl glass. The ICS solar heater is designed with respect to increasing absorption surfaces and minimizing the heat loss from the absorber to the ambient. The experimental results indicate that the ICS solar water heater has a moderate thermal efficiency and the remarkable capability of the heat preservation.

Abstract:Solar energy has addressed the significant issue of energy conservation and emission reduction through providing an alternative solution to the building energy utilization. To solve the inherent intermittency problem, latent heat phase change module is designed to even the fluctuation of energy supply. This pa-per designs a phase change heat storage/release unit and builds a visual test system for phase change heat storage/release. To study the influence of different heating and cooling temperatures upon thermal cycle of melting and solidification, a series of experiments are carried out. Melting front evolution, tem-perature field and response, and uniformity analysis are assessed. Experimental results demonstrate that the phase interface changes from top to bottom in the melting process. However, solidified covers appear evenly up and down during solidification process. Reasonably increasing the heating temperature effec-tively shortens the complete melting time. 56.0% reduction in full melting time is achieved if increasing the heating temperature from 65 degrees C to 85 degrees C. However, this is done at the expense of decreasing the tem-perature uniformity of the PCM. The results proved guidance for the design strategy on passive building energy utilization.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An all day operation model for flat-plate solar collector(including heating process in the daytime and freezing process in night)was presented. The average meteorological data of Qinghai Xining in January were used to solve the model through numerical discretization and program compilation. The temperature variation inside the collector and phase change boundary of the working fluid in pipe can be obtained from the model.On this basis,the factors influencing the antifreeze performance of the collector in night were investigated.The results showed that the antifreeze performance of the collector can be improved by narrowing the pipe space,increasing the diameter of pipe and the thickness of the air gap,or utilizing TIM transparent honeycomb or Low-E glass cover.

Abstract:A 704 type 4He cryostat is designed and the “National (China) Temperature Working Standard Group of the ITS-90 at 1.2–24 K” have been composed. A 703 type 3He cryostat have been established and the working temperature of the “National Temperature Working Standard Group of the ITS-90 at 1.2–24 K” is extended to 0.65 K, which is the lowest limit temperature of ITS-90. The 5 rhodium-iron resistance thermometers (RIRTs) which compose the Working Standard Group have been transformed to the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90). A set of indexing data is fitted and calculated as the indexing table of the standard facility of RIRT. 42 basis temperature points have been measured at 0.67–26.37 K. The results show that the temperature control level could reach 0.5 mK/30 min. The difference between the temperature value of the 5 RIRTs and the average is less than 1.1 mK, and the comparison measurements uncertainty is 0.95 mK.
