Abstract:The main function of rare earth in the amorphous alloy is briefly reviewed,including deoxidation, purifying the alloy liquid,increasing the glass forming ability and improving the soft magnetic property.It describes the action of Y,Ce,Er,Nd and Sc on the main amorphous alloy system,such as Fe-based,Zr-based,Al-based and Mg-based amorphous alloy.By analyzing the physical and chemical characteristics of rare earth elements,it can contribute to choose and integrate the different rare earth elements,as well as improve the performance of the amorphous alloy.

Abstract:Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is being used widely to reduce and control the NOx emissions from internal combustion engines. However, the use of EGR leads to rise in soot emission and contamination of lubricating oil. Soot-contaminated lubricating oil has been shown to accelerate engine wear. At the same time, zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) which is widely used in lubricating oil as highly active extreme pressure and anti-wear additive may harmfully affect the internal combustion engine and its exhaust gas purifying installation. It is an important for the engine lubricating oil to look for new type lubricating oil additives without or low phosphorus. Rare-earth is the general name of 17 elements, including scandium, yttrium and lanthanide series. It is potential for the rare-earth compounds as new type and efficient lubricating oil additives because most of rare-earth compounds have hexagonal crystal layer structure. Current research results showed that the application prospects of some rare-earth compounds in the tribology field were extremely vast, such as oil, grease, water and coating lubrication systems etc. This chapter will mainly focus on the recent developments on the tribological behaviour of lubricating oils containing rare-earth elements, including the preparation and lubricating mechanism of rare-earth nanoparticles, surface modification for the rare-earth inorganic compound, rare-earth additives with potential application, synergistic effect of the rare-earth compounds and other additives, and the research tendency on the rare-earth lubricating additives, especially the influence of rare-earth elements on the tribological performance of carbon films and its friction-reduced catalyst function etc. which will be helpful to understand and develop the lubrication role of the rare-earth elements as additives in the lubricating oils.

Abstract:Cerium (Ce) compounds have attracted considerable attention as key components in functional coatings due to their many outstanding properties. This work provides a comprehensive review of recent advances in the application of Ce in functional coatings. The role of Ce in the improvement of functional properties such as corrosion-resistance, self-healing, superhydrophobicity, wear-resistance, and UV shielding is reviewed from the perspective of functional mechanism and applied research. Furthermore, the strategies, processes, practical problems, and current challenges in the research of functional coatings containing Ce are summarized and discussed. The objective is to highlight the great potential of Ce in functional coatings, and to explore new applications of Ce in the development of novel coatings. Thus, this work aims to enhance the application value of Ce, solving the problem of unbalanced application of rare-earth elements. Graphical abstract The review summarizes the latest trends in the sustained development of cerium in functional coatings. Abstract:In this paper, authors introduced the progress and current situation in research of rare earth metal (REM) conversion coatings on aluminum alloys, especially reviewed the development of REM conversion coating technique. In addition, the mechanism of coating formation and mechanism of corrosion resistance of REM conversion coatings were also discussed.At last, authors pointed out the problems of current research for REM conversion coating. As well, further research efforts were briefly prospected.

Abstract:: Rare earth sulfides are a new type of functional materials with complex crystal structures, which show unique optical, electrical and magnetic properties. They are widely used in many fields, such as non-toxic pigments and energy storage, and have perspective application in photocatalytic, thermoelectric power generation, permanent magnet and other fields. Based on our group’s work in these fields, this review systematically summarizes the research progress and milestone on synthetic methodology, crystal structure modification and composite construction of rare earth sulfide in recent years. The performance enhancement strategies of rare earth sulfide in inorganic pigment, energy storage and photocatalysis are comprehensively sorted out. The structure-activity relationship of rare-earth sulfide is discussed and their positive prospects are proposed. Finally, this review summarizes the existing problems in current research and puts forward the prospects for its research direction
Rare earth effect on microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of CoCrW coatings

Abstract:Eight different CoCrW coatings doped with rare earth oxide were deposited by supersonic plasma spraying (SPS). Environmental scanning electron microscopy, microhardness tester, X-ray diffractometer, and self-developed tribometer for high temperature were employed to investigate the properties of sprayed coatings. The results show that rare earth can refine the microstructure effectively, and make the element distribution uniform, which leads to the increase of average microhardness and the corresponding decrease of fluctuation range of sectioned surface of SPS coatings. Furthermore, the rare earth can reduce the friction coefficient between the SPS coating and glass during the sliding process at about 973K largely, and the mechanism of anti-friction is also discussed.

Abstract:Strategical elements, such as rare earth elements, play a crucial role in the industry, especially in producing high-tech materials. Major global industries have developed a strong dependence on rare earth materials. Every year, there are innovations in industries such as modern technology, green energy, or communications technology, which need more strategic metals to improve investment profitability. This article reviews advances in rare earth separation methods and techniques to guide and recommend the best extractants, depending on leaching conditions and the final target product. Each method for separating and extracting agents is individually revised in terms of the mechanism and interaction of providing rare earth elements. This paper also evaluates past and current trends in these methods and technical extractants and identifies their strengths and weaknesses.Graphical abstractThis review summarized the research progress of methods applied by industries to extract rare earth elements used in up-to-date advanced technology. The research shows a broad and deep understanding of REE and provides further information on the scientific aspect. Four significant methods of REE are distinguished and were profoundly described. Study on RE-Al-Zr-C-N Coating by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Abstract:Thermal diffusion of coating on 45 steel with rare earths, zirconium, aluminum, carbon and nitrogen was reported. Through X-ray photoelectron spectrum, the binding energy of permeated elements and their existence states were analyzed. Their existence on the surface of treated steel was confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that the rare earth acts as an activator and accelerator of the permeating of other elements. The effect of rare earths on aluminum is greater than that on zirconium.

Abstract:The addition of rare earth(RE) as trace elements to aluminum or magnesium alloys can purify the melts,refine and modify the microstructure,reduce the inclusion . The addition of more RE elements can significantly enhance the comprehensive properties,especially mechanical behavior at high temperature. Research, development, and application for RE-containing Al alloys and RE-containing Mg alloys is reviewed with the emphasis on the effect of RE elements on melting,processing, and alloying of alloys. The future development of RE-containing Al alloys and RE-containing Mg alloys is prospected.
Rare earth effect on the microstructure and wear resistance of Ni-based coatings

Abstract:Eight different Cr3C2–NiCr coatings doped with rare earth oxide were deposited with supersonic plasma spraying. Surface contact profiler, X-ray diffractometer, environmental scanning electron microscopy, multi-functional tribometer, microhardness tester were employed to investigate the microstructure and friction and wear performance of sprayed coatings. The results show that the wear volume loss of coatings doped with 2wt.% La2O3 and 2wt% La2O3+2wt.% CeO2 is three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the coating without rare earth, respectively, correspondingly the friction coefficient of two coatings is only two third of that of the coating without rare earth. According to the SEM worn surface observations, the wear mechanism of the coating doped with 2wt% La2O3 is strain crushed wear induced by plastic deformation and fatigue during the sliding process, which is distinct with abrasive wear and delamination fracture wear mechanisms of the coating without rare earth. Furthermore, rare earth can make the microstructure more compact, less porous and denser, leading to the increase of average microhardness and decrease of its fluctuation range of sprayed coatings.

Abstract:The purification mechanisms of rare earths metals were briefly explained. The methods for purifying rare earth metal mainly included vacuum melting, electrolytic refining, vacuum distillation/sublimation, fused-salt extraction, zone refining, solid-state electrotransport, electrochemical deoxidation, external getter method, plasma arc melting (Ar or Ar+H-2), etc. The research progress and purification effects were summarized. Multiple means for removing impurities should be combined and the level of equipment should be promoted in order to improve the effects of purification, reduce the cost and shorten production cycle.

Abstract:The self-propagating spraying coating was prepared by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS). The effects of the rare earth(RE) on microstructure and the abrasive resistence of self-propagating spraying coating was investigated. The obvelrvations and analysis of the microscopic appearances of the worn surfaces of the coating were conducted by the use of SEM. The results showed: the RE can impove the properities of the self-propagating spraying coating, the suitable small amount(0.2%) of RE can refine the self-propagating spraying coating and improve the hardness and the wear resistence efficiently. When the excessive RE(0.5%) was added into the self-fluxing alloy power, the properties of the self-propagating spraying coating became worse.

Abstract:Possessing multiple energy levels, unique 4f electron transition ability and optical properties, rare earth elements can improve efficiently the activity of TiO2 photocatalysts by doping or preparing compound semiconductors. Furthermore, novel photocatalysts have been secured with RE elements. Based on relative documents, the application of rare earth elements in photocatalysts is reviewed in this paper, including RE modified TiO2 photocatalysts and non-TiO2 photocatalysts. The roles of RE elements and its mechanism, as well as the focus and outlook of the research of RE-containing photocatalysts were deeply discussed.

Abstract:The exceptional photoelectromagnetic characteristics of rare-earth elements contribute significantly to their indispensable position in the high-tech industry. The exponential expansion of the demand for high-purity rare earth and related compounds can be attributed to the swift advancement of contemporary technology. Nevertheless, rare-earth elements are finite and limited resources, and their excessive mining unavoidably results in resource depletion and environmental degradation. Hence, it is crucial to establish a highly effective approach for the extraction and reclamation of rare-earth elements. Adsorption is regarded as a promising technique for the recovery of rare-earth elements owing to its simplicity, environmentally friendly nature, and cost-effectiveness. The efficacy of adsorption is contingent upon the performance characteristics of the adsorbent material. Presently, there is a prevalent utilization of porous adsorbent materials with substantial specific surface areas and plentiful surface functional groups in the realm of selectively separating and recovering rare-earth elements. This paper presents a thorough examination of porous inorganic carbon materials, porous inorganic silicon materials, porous organic polymers, and metal–organic framework materials. The adsorption performance and processes for rare-earth elements are the focal points of discussion about these materials. Furthermore, this work investigates the potential applications of porous materials in the domain of the adsorption of rare-earth elements.
