Abstract:In this paper,the advantages of rare-earth catalyst were analyzed.Catalysis principle of the rare-earth catalyst and the studying present state of the rare-earth catalyst for cleaning the automotive off-gas were discussed.And the applied prospect of the rare-earth catalyst was reviewed.Rare-earth metal added in the automotive off-gas catalyst improves heat resistant of carrier and increases activity of catalyst,saves of quantity of noble metal and reduces production cost.In the recent year,a lot of important research achievements about rare-earth catalyst have been achieved in the world.Nano particle may be can become a dominant catalyst in the 21th century.

Abstract:There are at least three obvious trends in the developments of automotive market in China: the evolution of emission standards from Euro II to Euro III, the demand of lean-burn gasoline engine and the time of diesel vehicles. The latest application and advances of exhaust catalysts by Chinese researchers, using some high effcient, economical and durable methods to meet these changes in emission regulations laws and engine technologies, were described. Rare earth oxides, such as lanthana, ceria-based solid solutions and perovskite-type oxides, are widely used as excellent promoters for thermal stability, oxygen storage capacity and oxidation/reduction activity in these catalysts. Four phases in the development of the auto exhaust catalyst industry in China since the mid 1970s were reviewed. It is argued that China will become the center of global auto exhaust catalysts industry in the next decades with its economic, technical and environmental incentives, which greatly depends on the research and development of rare earth.

Abstract:Rare earth elements possess 4f orbitals without full electron occupancy and lanthanide contraction. This characteristic results in their unique catalytic performance when they are used as active components or as catalyst supports. Research into and the development of rare earth catalytic materials will significantly promote the high-efficiency utilization of abundant rare earth elements, such as lanthanum and cerium. Currently, rare earth catalytic materials play an important role in such areas as the petroleum chemical industry, the catalytic combustion of fossil fuels, automotive emissions control, the purification of industrial waste air, and solid solution fuel cells. In this paper, we review the application of and recent research progress that has been made on rare earth catalytic materials, including relative theoretical research. The effects of rare earth elements on the structure, activity, and stability of the catalysts of interest are described.

Abstract:Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is being used widely to reduce and control the NOx emissions from internal combustion engines. However, the use of EGR leads to rise in soot emission and contamination of lubricating oil. Soot-contaminated lubricating oil has been shown to accelerate engine wear. At the same time, zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) which is widely used in lubricating oil as highly active extreme pressure and anti-wear additive may harmfully affect the internal combustion engine and its exhaust gas purifying installation. It is an important for the engine lubricating oil to look for new type lubricating oil additives without or low phosphorus. Rare-earth is the general name of 17 elements, including scandium, yttrium and lanthanide series. It is potential for the rare-earth compounds as new type and efficient lubricating oil additives because most of rare-earth compounds have hexagonal crystal layer structure. Current research results showed that the application prospects of some rare-earth compounds in the tribology field were extremely vast, such as oil, grease, water and coating lubrication systems etc. This chapter will mainly focus on the recent developments on the tribological behaviour of lubricating oils containing rare-earth elements, including the preparation and lubricating mechanism of rare-earth nanoparticles, surface modification for the rare-earth inorganic compound, rare-earth additives with potential application, synergistic effect of the rare-earth compounds and other additives, and the research tendency on the rare-earth lubricating additives, especially the influence of rare-earth elements on the tribological performance of carbon films and its friction-reduced catalyst function etc. which will be helpful to understand and develop the lubrication role of the rare-earth elements as additives in the lubricating oils.

Abstract:The research and development of rare earth catalytic materials will greatly promote the high-efficiency utilization of abundant rare earth elements, such as La and Ce. Rare earth elements have under-filled 4f orbits and lanthanide contraction, resulting in their unique catalytic performances when used as an active component or the carrier of catalysts. This paper reviews the progress in the preparation, structural and catalytic properties of rare earth catalytic materials, containing rare earth oxides, rare earth composite oxides, rare earth-noble metal catalysts and rare earth modified porous materials. The effects of rare earth elements on the structures, activities and stabilities of the concerned catalysts are mainly described. As well as, the interactions between rare earth metals and transition metals or noble metals are also elaborated, which are critical for the performances of the catalysts. Finally, the development thinking for rare earth catalytic materials is put forwarded and outlooked.

Abstract:Effects of Nd and mixture of rare- earth elements on community and diversity of algae in fresh water were studied by a simulated test. The results showed that the numbers of species and individuals, diversity of algae were inhibited under testing concentrations (1 mg· L- 1 and 5 mg· L- 1) of rare- earth elements in total. It was showed that lower concentration of rare- earth stimulated slightly the growth of algae at the beginning of test. It is implicated that the toxicity of Nd was slightly higher than that of mixture of rare- earth elements comparatively.

Abstract:Increasingly stringent regulations in many countries require effective reduction and control of NOx emissions. To meet these limits, various methods have been exploited, among which the selective catalytic reduction of NOx using ammonia as the reductant (NH3-SCR) is the most favored technology. High catalytic activity, N2 selectivity and resistance to deactivation by sulfur, alkaline metals and hydrothermal conditions are the optimal properties of a successful SCR catalyst. Rare earth oxides, particularly CeO2, have been increasingly used to improve the catalytic activity and resistance to deactivation of deNOx catalysts, both modifying traditional vanadium catalysts, and also developing novel catalysts, especially for low temperature applications. This review summarized the open literature concerning recent research and development progresses in the application of rare earths for NH3-SCR of NOx. Additionally, the roles of rare earths in enhancing the performance of NH3-SCR catalyst were reviewed.

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of RENi 5− x M x (M = Co, Mn, Ti) hydrogen storage alloys with different compositions of rare earth components (RE = La 1−x−y−z Ce x Nd y Pr z ) were systematically examined. The results showed that La, Ce, Nd and Pr all had big effects on the electrode performance. A mathematical-methodological approach to compositions was used and the results showed that all had the combined effect on the electrode properties. A computer program was adopted to draw out isographs including the isodischarge capacity, iso-high-rate dischargeability and isocycle life of multicomponent alloy electrodes vs. the composition of quasi-ternary rare earth elements.

Abstract:The influence of rare earth elements (La, Nd, Pr, Sm and Y) addition to Ce0.2Zr0.8O2 and its supported Pd-only three-way catalysts has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) techniques, and that the dynamic oxygen storage capacity (DOSC) has also been evaluated under transient conditions. Special attention was given to the information of structural modification and the effect of doping on the three-way catalytic performance. The phase for all the ceria–zirconia-rare earth ternary solid solution is single tetragonal, irrespective of the treatment temperature applied. The presence of La, Nd and Pr results in enhanced thermal stability, improved reducibility and increased strong metal–support interaction, leading to the relatively higher three-way catalytic activity for all the target pollutants over the corresponding catalysts. The air/fuel operation window is also enlarged due to the increased dynamic oxygen storage capacity.

Abstract:Automotive exhaust emission is a major cause of air pollution. Three-way catalyst (TWC) which can eliminate CO, HC (hydrocarbons), and NO(x) simultaneously has been used to control exhaust emissions. Ceria-zirconia is a key component in TWC and most researchers pay attention to Ceria-Zirconia (Ce-rich) solid solution. The research presented in this paper is focused on the intrinsic structure of Ceria-Zirconia (Zr-based) solid solution and its application in TWC. A series of Ce(0.2)Zr(0.8)O(2) modified with rare earths (La, Nd, Pr, Sm, and Y) have been prepared by coprecipitation method combined with supercritical drying technique. All samples showed single tetragonal solid solution, indicating that the rare earth ion inserted into the lattice structure completely, and an approximately linearly relationship between lattice parameter a and the ionic radius of doped rare earth was observed. The catalytic performances of corresponding Pd-only catalysts were investigated in simulated exhaust gas. The presence of La, Nd, and Pr was favorable to the catalytic activity and wide air/fuel operation window. The relationship between the intrinsic structure of the Zr-based ceria-zirconia solid solution and catalytic activity was discussed in detail, which has some reference value for catalyst design and application.

The dispersion of noble metal was accelerated, at the same time, synergetic effect of the rare earth were described. Prospective approaches for further studies were also suggested.

Abstract:Rare earth elements are of great interest in the realm of electrocatalysis due to their unique physico‐chemical properties. This review focuses on rare‐earth‐based catalysts, covering extensive ground on both the characteristics of rare‐earth elements and regulatory mechanisms of rare‐earth elements in electrocatalysis. The applications of rare‐earth‐based electrocatalysts were also discussed, hoping to deepen the understanding of the regulation mechanism of rare‐earth‐based catalysts and facilitate the collective progress of the field. Comprehensive Summary Amidst the pressing environmental challenges posed by the prevalent reliance on fossil fuels, it becomes imperative to seek sustainable alternatives and prioritize energy efficiency. Electrocatalysis, which is renowned for its high efficiency and environmental friendliness, has garnered significant attention. Rare earth elements (REEs), distinguished by their unique electronic and orbital structures, play a crucial role in electrocatalysis. The strategic integration of REEs into catalysts allows for the fine‐tuning of atomic structures, which in turn, significantly boosts catalytic performance. Despite substantial advancements in rare earth‐based materials for electrocatalysis, a comprehensive overview of the regulatory mechanisms involving REEs is lacking. In this mini‐review, we systematically explore the regulatory mechanisms of REEs within electrocatalysts and their pivotal roles in essential electrocatalytic processes such as the CO2 reduction reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction. We commence with an elucidation of REEs, proceed to delineate their regulatory impacts on electrocatalysts and delve into their applications in key electroreduction reactions. Abstract:Diesel oxide catalysts and soot combustion catalysts were reported in this paper.The former was manufactured in mass last year, and enhanced performance is under development now.The later is screened out and further research is under way.The best soot combustion catalyst could ignite soot combustion even at 350 ℃, which is within the range of temperatures reached in diesel exhaust, and shows the catalytic combustion velocity nearly one time faster compared with non-catalytic combustion of soot, which is of benefit to rapid regeneration of diesel particulate filter, thus it might be an excellent practicable catalyst.
