Abstract:Possessing multiple energy levels, unique 4f electron transition ability and optical properties, rare earth elements can improve efficiently the activity of TiO2 photocatalysts by doping or preparing compound semiconductors. Furthermore, novel photocatalysts have been secured with RE elements. Based on relative documents, the application of rare earth elements in photocatalysts is reviewed in this paper, including RE modified TiO2 photocatalysts and non-TiO2 photocatalysts. The roles of RE elements and its mechanism, as well as the focus and outlook of the research of RE-containing photocatalysts were deeply discussed.

Abstract:This review examines recent progress in using rare earth-based photocatalysts and their composites to degrade environmental pollutants. Rare earth elements (REEs), recognized for their unique electronic configurations and exceptional optical properties, have become effective dopants and co-catalysts, enhancing the capabilities of traditional semiconductor photocatalysts. Key enhancement strategies, including doping, co-doping, surface functionalization, and heterostructure formation, are analyzed to illustrate how they improve photocatalytic efficiency, stability, and selectivity. The review details studies on the photocatalytic degradation of various pollutants, such as dyes, antibiotics, and pesticides. It highlights how REEs contribute to better light absorption, efficient charge separation, and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The review also addresses challenges with the long-term stability of doped photocatalysts, like structural degradation and dopant leaching, suggesting possible solutions to enhance durability. By providing a broad overview, this review aims to guide researchers in designing next-generation photocatalysts for environmental remediation and to support the development of more sustainable water treatment technologies. Additionally, emerging trends such as green synthesis, integration with carbon-based nanocomposites, and scalable photocatalytic applications stressed REEs' potential in advancing eco-friendly water treatment solutions, aligning with global sustainability objectives.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework-like materials (MOFs) have been developed in the fields of photocatalysis for their excellent optical properties and physicochemical properties, including environmental remediation, CO 2 photoreduction, water splitting, and so on. With their important roles in various fields, rare earth elements have received growing interests from scientists. Modifying MOFs with rare earth elements for modification allows broadening the absorption spectrum, while the active electrons on their empty 4f orbitals can act as traps to capture photoexcited carriers to inhibit the recombination of electron–hole pairs, thus promoting photocatalytic activity. Therefore, rare earth elements modified MOFs provide an attractive way to achieve their high value utilization. In this mini-review, the synthesis of rare earth element-modified MOFs photocatalysts and corresponding applications in the removal of antibiotics, CO 2 reduction, and hydrogen production are constructively summarized and discussed. Abstract:Rare earth elements are of great interest in the realm of electrocatalysis due to their unique physico‐chemical properties. This review focuses on rare‐earth‐based catalysts, covering extensive ground on both the characteristics of rare‐earth elements and regulatory mechanisms of rare‐earth elements in electrocatalysis. The applications of rare‐earth‐based electrocatalysts were also discussed, hoping to deepen the understanding of the regulation mechanism of rare‐earth‐based catalysts and facilitate the collective progress of the field. Comprehensive Summary Amidst the pressing environmental challenges posed by the prevalent reliance on fossil fuels, it becomes imperative to seek sustainable alternatives and prioritize energy efficiency. Electrocatalysis, which is renowned for its high efficiency and environmental friendliness, has garnered significant attention. Rare earth elements (REEs), distinguished by their unique electronic and orbital structures, play a crucial role in electrocatalysis. The strategic integration of REEs into catalysts allows for the fine‐tuning of atomic structures, which in turn, significantly boosts catalytic performance. Despite substantial advancements in rare earth‐based materials for electrocatalysis, a comprehensive overview of the regulatory mechanisms involving REEs is lacking. In this mini‐review, we systematically explore the regulatory mechanisms of REEs within electrocatalysts and their pivotal roles in essential electrocatalytic processes such as the CO2 reduction reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction. We commence with an elucidation of REEs, proceed to delineate their regulatory impacts on electrocatalysts and delve into their applications in key electroreduction reactions. Abstract:Artificial photocatalysis is beneficial to carbon neutrality, renewable resources generation, and sustainable society development. Due to the unique layered structure, abundant surface functional groups, and tunable electronic properties, MXene is emerging as a promising contender to improve the comprehensive performance of photocatalysts. Much progress has been made in the study of MXene‐based nanomaterials over the past years, and state‐of‐the‐art advances in the rational design, controllable synthesis, characterization techniques, and diverse applications of MXene‐based photocatalysts have been reviewed. However, the roles and perspectives of MXenes in photocatalysis have been less summarized. Based on the analysis of the physical/chemical properties of MXenes and the latest research progress, herein, the multiple roles of MXenes are discussed in promoting photocatalysis, including carrier for active site anchoring, light‐transmitting media, mass transfer medium, cocatalyst, and heat conductor. In addition, the current status and challenges of MXenes in photocatalysis are summarized, and the future directions as well as the bottleneck of development that need to be broken through for MXenes in photocatalysis are also proposed. This review provides a clear and in‐depth understanding of the physical/chemical properties of MXene‐based photocatalysts and their contributions to photocatalysis.

Abstract:Rare earth metals are strategic resources with potential applications in optics, metallurgy, and catalysis. In recent years, single-atom site catalysts (SASCs) have attracted increasing attention owing to their 100% atom efficiency and unique catalytic performances. Over the past decade, rare earth elements, including rare earth metals and their oxides, have shown great potential in SASCs. However, systematic analyses of data are still handful. In this mini-review, the use of rare earth metals and their oxides in SASCs were summarized and the results were discussed. A particular focus was paid to the synthetic strategies, characterization of rare earth-containing SASCs, and applications as catalysis supports, promoters and active sites. Abstract:Photocatalysis has gained increasing interest due to its potential to overcome global energy and environmental challenges. Rare earth oxides (R 2 O 3 ) are identified as efficient photocatalytic materials on account of their tunable bandgaps, reversible oxidation states, venerable redox potentials, unique optoelectronic properties, effective stability, and non-toxicity. However, the advancement of efficient R 2 O 3 photocatalysts has also encountered some serious issues such as low surface area, quick photo-activated electron-hole recombination loss, and poor visible light absorption efficiency during photocatalytic reaction. Herein, we focus on recent advances in R 2 O 3 -based photocatalysts for pollutants removal, CO 2 reduction and H 2 generation. Firstly, the crystal structures and basic properties of R 2 O 3 materials have been introduced. Besides, to tackle the serious photocarrier recombination, constrained visible light response, inadequate durability, and lack of reactive sites of R 2 O 3 , different design strategies are discussed. These strategies include doping, morphology control (microstructure regulation, hierarchical/hollow/core-shell/mesoporous structures), anchored co-catalysts, vacancy creation, heterojunction construction (type-II/ Z -scheme/S-scheme), surface sensitization, and nanocarbon loading are discussed. In addition, the mechanistic insights associated with these design strategies for improved efficiency of R 2 O 3 -based photocatalytic systems are also reviewed and discussed. Finally, the present challenges and perspectives of R 2 O 3 photocatalysts are given to emphasize the magnificent future and noteworthy status of R 2 O 3 semiconductors for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Rare earth metal ferrites-based heterojunctions have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their exceptional photocatalytic properties and potential applications in water treatment and energy conversion. The incorporation of rare earth metal ferrites into heterojunction photocatalytic systems enhances light absorption, charge separation and photocatalytic efficiency. This review comprehensively discusses some common types of rare earth metal ferrites such as LaFeO 3 , GdFeO 3 , SmFeO 3 , PrFeO 3 and CeFeO 3 and their properties as photocatalysts. The photocatalytic pollutants removal and energy conversion mechanisms are discussed in detail and various types of heterojunctions reported in literature based on rare earth metal ferrites and their synthetic routes are also explored. The recent key findings and advances in the heterojunctions based on these rare earth metal ferrites for the pollutants removal and energy conversion applications are summarized. Despite notable progress in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency and stability, several challenges remain. Current research highlights improvements in material synthesis and performance, but issues such as high production costs, scalable synthesis and limited long-term stability persist. Future directions should focus on exploring uncharted applications, novel material combinations and enhancing the practical implementation of these heterojunctions to fully exploit their potential in environmental and energy technologies. Abstract:Rare-earth perovskite oxides have become a research hotspot in the fields of environment and energy owing to their structural tunability, excellent redox properties, high stability and high catalytic activity. Researchers have designed and developed different rare-earth perovskite catalysts for tackling environmental pollutants in recent years. This review summarizes recent research progress on rare-earth perovskite catalysts in the catalytic oxidation and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, gas sensing of volatile organic compounds and photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production and carbon dioxide reduction and conversion, and summarizes the mechanism of these reactions. It also discusses in detail the relationship between structural modification, synthesis process and the physical–chemical properties of the catalysts. Finally, the challenges with rare-earth chalcocite catalysts in the field of environment and energy are discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a versatile compound with widespread applications in various industries. In addition, it has attracted interest as a potential energy carrier due to its high energy density and ability to release oxygen upon decomposition. The development of photocatalytic technology has enabled sustainable production of H2O2. Various structural materials, including organic molecules, polymers, and metal coordination compounds, have been synthesized for investigating photocatalytic H2O2 production. Rare earth materials, in particular, are of interest due to their adjustable porosity and controllable metal active sites, making them valuable for research in this field. These materials have excellent photoelectric properties, making them promise for the photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2. Despite limited reports on systematic reviews of photocatalytic H2O2 production using rare earth materials, this study introduces the principles and advancements in this area. It reviews different methods of photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2, focusing on rare earth elements. Through comprehensive analysis and systematic studies in the existing literature, a deeper understanding of enhanced photocatalytic performance has been achieved. This research not only contributes to advancing fundamental knowledge but also provides a solid foundation for practical applications.

Abstract:Recently, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst has been comprehensively explored because of its exceptional physio-chemical properties and multifunctional applications in the field of photocatalysis, including water splitting, environmental remediation, CO2 photoreduction, and so on. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 activity is often hampered by limited light absorption, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, and low specific surface area which constrains its large-scale applications. To overcome these drawbacks, several strategies including doping and composite formation have been proposed. Because of their unfilled 4 f orbital that serve as capturing centers to restrict the recombination of photogenerated charges, rare earth elements with higher earth abundance compared to noble metals became affordable and efficient alternatives. Thus, using rare earth elements to alter other photocatalysts is a smart move. This review can give useful information regarding the depth of understanding of the diverse role of rare earth elements in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. In the first section, the distinctive features of the rare earth metal are emphasized. In the second part, the unique properties of g-C3N4 were discussed in more detail and compared to the conventional photocatalysts. In the last section, the review tries to cover the most recent advancements, especially in the area of rare earth elements-modified g-C3N4 for degradation of persistent organic pollutants as well as in the removal of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals, hydrogen production, and CO2 reduction. Finally, the recent progress in these aspects has been reviewed, as well as difficulties and potential prospects.

Abstract:Single-atom photocatalysts inject new vitality into the field of photocatalysis. Moreover, due to their unique properties and advantages, single-atom photocatalysts have tremendous potential to address energy crises and environmental pollution. However, the understanding of single-atom photocatalysts is still incomplete and mostly at an early stage. Therefore, there is an urgent need to summarize the advanced progress of single-atom photocatalysts for energy conversion and environmental remediation. In this review, we first introduce the mechanism of single-atom photocatalysis in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Then, we summarize the synthesis and characterization techniques of single-atom photocatalysts, which are crucial for a deeper understanding of the coordination environment and action mechanism of single-atom photocatalysts. Subsequently, we review the applications of single-atom photocatalysts in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Last but not least, we summarize the current status and challenges of single-atom photocatalysts. We hope that this review will provide new insights into the research of single-atom photocatalysts and promote their further development.

Abstract:Phase engineering is an emerging strategy for tuning the electronic states and catalytic functions of nanomaterials. Great interest has recently been captured by phase-engineered photocatalysts, including the unconventional phase, amorphous phase, and heterophase. Phase engineering of photocatalytic materials (including semiconductors and cocatalysts) can effectively affect the light absorption range, charge separation efficiency, or surface redox reactivity, resulting in different catalytic behavior. The applications for phase-engineered photocatalysts are widely reported, for example, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO2 reduction, and organic pollutant removal. This review will firstly provide a critical insight into the classification of phase engineering for photocatalysis. Then, the state-of-the-art development of phase engineering toward photocatalytic reactions will be presented, focusing on the synthesis and characterization methodologies for unique phase structure and the correlation between phase structure and photocatalytic performance. Finally, personal understanding of the current opportunities and challenges of phase engineering for photocatalysis will also be provided.

Abstract:The solar-driven photocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2 RR) into chemical fuels is a promising route to enrich energy supplies and mitigate CO2 emissions. However, low catalytic efficiency and poor selectivity, especially in a pure-water system, hinder the development of photocatalytic CO2 RR owing to the lack of effective catalysts. Herein, we report a novel atom-confinement and coordination (ACC) strategy to achieve the synthesis of rare-earth single erbium (Er) atoms supported on carbon nitride nanotubes (Er1 /CN-NT) with a tunable dispersion density of single atoms. Er1 /CN-NT is a highly efficient and robust photocatalyst that exhibits outstanding CO2 RR performance in a pure-water system. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal the crucial role of single Er atoms in promoting photocatalytic CO2 RR.

Abstract:The past several years have witnessed great progress in electrocatalytic applications of transition-metal-based materials through electronic modulation resulting from d-d and d-p orbital coupling. Newly developed rare-earth-based materials with specific 4f orbital occupancy also reveal a significant function of electronic modulation in enhanced electrocatalytic activity, whereas there is a shortage of systematic reviews reporting the most recent progress in electrocatalysis. This review provides a timely and comprehensive of major achievements regarding rare earth (RE)-based electrocatalytic materials to address future investigation directions. We start with a brief introduction of the development of RE-based electrocatalysts and their advantages in electrocatalysis. Then we systematically summarize various RE-based materials, including alloys, perovskites, hybrids, and single atoms, that have been developed over the last 5 years. Finally, challenges and perspectives are presented to expedite future progress and provide some research guidance for RE-based materials.

Abstract:The term "dual reaction sites photocatalyst" refers to a type of photocatalyst that spatially separates the redox reaction. Photocatalysts possessing dual reaction sites exhibit superior characteristics concerning carrier separation and rapid transfer rates, attributed to the separation of redox sites. Based on the outstanding performance of photocatalysts with dual reaction sites, various types of dual reaction sites have been developed for the purpose of pollutant removal and energy conversion. The present paper provides a comprehensive review of the fundamental principles and existing configurations of photocatalysts with dual reaction sites. The construction techniques for dual reaction sites on various foundations were presented, and a comparison of their respective merits and drawbacks was conducted. The utilization of photocatalysts with dual reaction sites in the degradation of pollutants, water splitting, and CO 2 reduction is reviewed. Finally, the current problems and development direction of dual reaction site photocatalysts are discussed. The expectation is that this review will offer reference for the development of highly efficient and extensively employed dual reaction sites photocatalysts.

Abstract:Rapid industrialization and overpopulation have led to energy shortages and environmental pollution, accelerating research to solve the issues. Currently, metal-free photocatalysts have gained the intensive attention of scientists due to their environmental-friendly nature and ease of preparation. It was noticed that g-C3N4 (GCN) consists of a few outstanding properties that could be used for various applications such as water treatment and clean energy production. Nonetheless, bare GCN contains several drawbacks such as high charge recombination, limited surface area, and low light sensitivity. Several solutions have been applied to overcome GCN limitations. Co-doping, tri-doping, and rare-earth-doping can be effective solutions to modify the GCN structure and improve its performance toward photocatalysis. This review highlights the function of multi-elemental and rare-earth dopants in GCN structure, mechanisms, and performance for photocatalytic applications as well as the advantages of co-doping, tri-doping, and rare-earth-doping of GCN. This review summarizes the different roles of dopants in addressing the limitations of GCN. Therefore, this article critically reviewed how multi-elemental and rare-earth-doping affect GCN properties and enhanced photoactivity for various applications.

Abstract:: Rare earth sulfides are a new type of functional materials with complex crystal structures, which show unique optical, electrical and magnetic properties. They are widely used in many fields, such as non-toxic pigments and energy storage, and have perspective application in photocatalytic, thermoelectric power generation, permanent magnet and other fields. Based on our group’s work in these fields, this review systematically summarizes the research progress and milestone on synthetic methodology, crystal structure modification and composite construction of rare earth sulfide in recent years. The performance enhancement strategies of rare earth sulfide in inorganic pigment, energy storage and photocatalysis are comprehensively sorted out. The structure-activity relationship of rare-earth sulfide is discussed and their positive prospects are proposed. Finally, this review summarizes the existing problems in current research and puts forward the prospects for its research direction

Abstract:As a series of important metal materials, rare earth elements and their related derivative compounds have received significant attention because of their narrow emission bands, noncytotoxicity, excitation of multiple fluorescence colors and electrochemical properties. These unique properties endow rare earth-based nanomaterials with great potential for application in various fields such as in supercapacitors, batteries, sensors, devices and solar cells. This review presents a general description of the electrochemical properties of rare earth-based nanomaterials. The developments and improvements of their electrochemical applications in electrochemical sensors for the detection of small biomolecules and DNA, supercapacitors, batteries and electrochemical catalysis towards the hydrogen evolution reaction have also been discussed.
