Abstract:The artificial ammonia synthesis via electrochemical nitrate reduction has met increasing research interest, but it is still necessary to develop advanced catalysts with high nitrate-to-ammonia capability. Herein, we propose and demonstrate a one-step method to construct binder-free Cu foam-supported oxygen vacancy-rich Cu/CuOx in-plane heterostructured nanosheet arrays (Cu/CuOx/CF). In addition to exposing ample active sites, the two-dimensional nanosheet morphology greatly facilitates the mass/charge-transfer process during electrocatalysis. Besides, the in-plane heterojunctions and rich oxygen vacancies induced synergistic effect can modulate the electronic structure of active sites and thus tune the adsorption properties of the reactant intermediates and inhibit the formation of undesirable byproducts, which is conducive to the further improvement of nitrate reduction activity. As a result, these advantages endow the Cu/CuOx/CF with superior performance for ammonia synthesis via nitrate electroreduction, achieving high ammonia selectivity (95.00%) and Faradaic efficiency (93.58%).

Abstract:The development of rare earth catalysts is expected to reduce the dependence on noble metal catalysts in mobile and stationary sources. The AMn2O5 mullite oxide is a category of rare earth metal oxides for the catalytic oxidation of environmental pollutants, in which the A-site cations are the rare earth cations. The coexistence of the diverse Mn ions and the exposed Mn-Mn dimers in AMn2O5 mullite oxides contribute to the excellent catalytic performance for various catalytic reactions. Herein, the crystal structure and the identification of lattice oxygen of AMn2O5 mullite oxides have been discussed. Meanwhile, a comprehensive understanding of the activity and the thermal stability of AMn2O5 mullite oxides has been investigated. As a group of rare earth catalysts, the representing modification strategies with their advantages have been summarized to guide the rational design of next-generation mullite oxide catalysts. To gain a deeper understanding of AMn2O5 mullite oxides as heterogeneous catalysts, we have reviewed the publications in catalytic purification of vehicle exhaust and catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds, accompanied by the exploration of corresponding reaction mechanisms and the analysis of applied modification strategies. Furthermore, the perspective research direction of AMn2O5 mullite oxide catalysts has been outlined to inspire more valuable research work.

Abstract:High entropy oxides have been regarded as one of the most promising catalysts. Their unique and diverse elemental compositions bring stable structures and abundant metal active sites to the catalysts. Notably, rare earth ions have similar radii, unique electron orbitals, and variable valence states. As a result, incorporating rare earth elements into high entropy oxides can effectively adjust the surface state of the catalyst, ultimately improving the structure and properties of the high entropy oxides. However, there is no systematic review on the development of rare earth-incorporated high entropy oxides. In this review, we target the structure, synthesis, and application of rare earth-incorporated high entropy oxides to summarize their research progress in catalysis in recent years. First, we provide an overview of three types of rare earth-incorporated high entropy oxides: fluorite-type, perovskite-type, and pyrochlore-type. Then, the main synthesis methods are discussed in detail, including solid-state reaction, nebulized spray pyrolysis, chemical co-precipitation, and solution combustion. Finally, we analyze the applications of this material in catalytic reactions and suggest possible challenges and solution strategies. It is concluded that this unique material has good prospects for development.

Abstract:Increasingly stringent regulations in many countries require effective reduction and control of NOx emissions. To meet these limits, various methods have been exploited, among which the selective catalytic reduction of NOx using ammonia as the reductant (NH3-SCR) is the most favored technology. High catalytic activity, N2 selectivity and resistance to deactivation by sulfur, alkaline metals and hydrothermal conditions are the optimal properties of a successful SCR catalyst. Rare earth oxides, particularly CeO2, have been increasingly used to improve the catalytic activity and resistance to deactivation of deNOx catalysts, both modifying traditional vanadium catalysts, and also developing novel catalysts, especially for low temperature applications. This review summarized the open literature concerning recent research and development progresses in the application of rare earths for NH3-SCR of NOx. Additionally, the roles of rare earths in enhancing the performance of NH3-SCR catalyst were reviewed.

Abstract:Rare earth elements are of great interest in the realm of electrocatalysis due to their unique physico‐chemical properties. This review focuses on rare‐earth‐based catalysts, covering extensive ground on both the characteristics of rare‐earth elements and regulatory mechanisms of rare‐earth elements in electrocatalysis. The applications of rare‐earth‐based electrocatalysts were also discussed, hoping to deepen the understanding of the regulation mechanism of rare‐earth‐based catalysts and facilitate the collective progress of the field. Comprehensive Summary Amidst the pressing environmental challenges posed by the prevalent reliance on fossil fuels, it becomes imperative to seek sustainable alternatives and prioritize energy efficiency. Electrocatalysis, which is renowned for its high efficiency and environmental friendliness, has garnered significant attention. Rare earth elements (REEs), distinguished by their unique electronic and orbital structures, play a crucial role in electrocatalysis. The strategic integration of REEs into catalysts allows for the fine‐tuning of atomic structures, which in turn, significantly boosts catalytic performance. Despite substantial advancements in rare earth‐based materials for electrocatalysis, a comprehensive overview of the regulatory mechanisms involving REEs is lacking. In this mini‐review, we systematically explore the regulatory mechanisms of REEs within electrocatalysts and their pivotal roles in essential electrocatalytic processes such as the CO2 reduction reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction. We commence with an elucidation of REEs, proceed to delineate their regulatory impacts on electrocatalysts and delve into their applications in key electroreduction reactions. Abstract:As a series of important metal materials, rare earth elements and their related derivative compounds have received significant attention because of their narrow emission bands, noncytotoxicity, excitation of multiple fluorescence colors and electrochemical properties. These unique properties endow rare earth-based nanomaterials with great potential for application in various fields such as in supercapacitors, batteries, sensors, devices and solar cells. This review presents a general description of the electrochemical properties of rare earth-based nanomaterials. The developments and improvements of their electrochemical applications in electrochemical sensors for the detection of small biomolecules and DNA, supercapacitors, batteries and electrochemical catalysis towards the hydrogen evolution reaction have also been discussed.
Oxygen vacancy-regulated nanorod array electrodes for boosting the electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia from nitrate wastewater

Abstract:The adsorption of nitrate is the key to enhancing the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR). Herein, a typical hydrolysis-coupled redox (HCR) reaction has been designed to prepare unique 3D Cu/Fe2O3 core-shell nanorod array cathodes with controllable oxygen vacancy concentrations for NitRR. The optimal Cu/Fe2O3-13 achieves a high nitrate conversion of 99.10% and ammonia selectivity of 98.30%. The outstanding electrochemical performance is attributed to the enhancement mechanism of OVs and a unique nanorod array structure with a high density of surface-exposed OVs and high-throughput transport pathways for ion-aspects.
Interfacial electric field triggered N2 activation for efficient electrochemical synthesis of ammonia

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) is a sustainable approach to producing carbon-free ammonia under ambient conditions, while its performance has been severely limited by the poor activity of electrocatalysts. Here, we report the deliberate modulation of interfacial electric field at the CoO-Co3O4 interface as an effective strategy for boosting ENRR performance. The prepared CoO-Co3O4 showed a promising NH3 yield of 59.96 μg h−1 mgcat−1 and high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 22.37 % in 0.1 M Li2SO4. In situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the engineered strong interfacial electric field in CoO-Co3O4 electrocatalyst act synergistically to capture inert N2 by forming strong Co-N bonds. Subsequently, the interfacial electric field enhanced σ-d orbital hybridization between N2 molecule and Co site of CoO-Co3O4, achieving highly efficient N2 molecule activation. This work provides a deep understanding of electric field effect on the performance of ENRR catalysts.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) synthesis from electrochemical conversion of nitrate (NO3) can efficiently reduce the emission of nitrogen oxide. However, the complex reaction pathways of nitrate reduction to NH3 are not fully revealed by previous reports. Here we point out that Ag/Cu2O hybrids prepared with the assistance of oxygen vacancies (O-v) have very competitive activity (selectivity: 96.85%, Faradaic efficiency: 96.45%) for NH3 synthesis from NO3. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that this high performance of Ag/Cu2O hybrids derives from the strong interface interactions owing to the formation of strong Ag-Cu bonds. Both online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the strong interface interactions between Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and Cu2O can efficiently boost the adsorption of NO3 and facilitate the formation of *N intermediates in NH3 synthesis. Study on NH3-SCR performance and mechanism of Fe/Mn modified rare earth concentrate

Abstract:In this paper, the transition metals Fe and Mn are doped on the surface of rare earth concentrates by the impregnation method to prepare NH3-SCR catalyst active powder. SEM, XRD, BET, XPS, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, NO-TPD, FTIR and other characterization methods are used to explore the surface properties and mechanism of rare earth concentrates doped with transition metals, and at the same time determine its catalysis in a simulated flue gas device performance. The results showed that the NOx conversion rate of Fe and Mn doped rare earth concentrates reached 94.8% at 200 °C. The specific surface area of the rare earth concentrate increases after Fe and Mn are doped. Fe and Mn are uniformly dispersed on the surface of the rare earth concentrate. The combined effect of Fe, Mn and the rare earth concentrate provides more weak acid sites for the reaction and promotes desorption of NO in the low temperature section. The redox performance of rare earth concentrates has also been greatly improved. Rare earth concentrates doped with Fe and Mn mainly follow the L-H mechanism in the low temperature section, and mainly follow the E-R mechanism in the high temperature section. In general, the introduction of transition metals Fe and Mn effectively improves the NH3-SCR catalytic activity of rare earth concentrates, and the rare earth concentrates themselves have good resistance and tolerance, which is useful for preparing NH3-SCR catalysts from natural minerals. It has important theoretical significance and practical value, and at the same time has a pioneering role in the application of Baiyun Obo rare earth minerals in industrial production.

Abstract:With the requirements of high current, long-chain carbon, and higher Faraday efficiency, the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide by traditional Cu-based catalysts has certain limitations in kinetics. In contrast, the catalysts containing rare earth elements have the characteristics of multiple valence states and 4 f orbitals, which can control the bonding of reaction product intermediates to the active sites of catalyst metals. That can reduce the energy barrier and band gap value of the reaction speed control step, and hasten the electron transfer during the carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction reaction, providing a new idea for carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction reaction. In this paper, the reasons and processes of rare earth nanomaterials in carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction from discovery to application are reviewed, the reaction principle for the formation of carbon-containing compounds is discussed in detail, and the incorporation of rare earth elements affects the performance of copper-based catalysts is further discussed. According to the number of carbon-containing atoms, the products are mainly divided into C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , and C 3+ . Finally, this paper retrospects the current application advances of rare-earth-based nanomaterials in carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction reactions. It makes a rational foreground for developing rare-earth-based nanomaterial in carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction reactions.

Abstract:Ammonia is an extremely important storage and transport medium for renewable energy, and technology is expected to produce it on demand and onsite using renewable energy. Applying a DC (direct current) to a solid catalyst layer with semiconducting properties makes ammonia synthesis highly efficient, even at low temperatures (approximately 400 K). In this process, oxide supports with semiconducting properties play important roles as metal supports and conduction fields for electrons and protons. The influence of the degree of particle aggregation on the support properties and ammonia synthesis using an electric field was evaluated for CeO 2 , which is the best material for this purpose because of its semiconducting properties. The results showed that controlling the aggregation structure of the crystalline particles could significantly influence the surface conductivity of protons and electrons; thus, the activity could be largely controlled. The Ru–CeO 2 interaction could also be controlled by changing the crystallinity, which suppressed the aggregation of the supported Ru and significantly improved the ammonia synthesis activity using an electric field at low temperatures.

Abstract:Rare earth elements exhibit excellent catalytic performances owing to their strong basicity,abundant coordination probabilities and redox properties.In this review,heterogeneous catalytic reactivities and structure-activity relationships of rare earth catalysts in transformation reactions of small molecules,such as dehydration of alcohol,oxidation and reforming of gas molecules,were concisely summarized,mainly guided by the category of catalytic reactions.Rare earth elements can be introduced into the catalytic systems either as active components to directly participate in the reactions,or as large-area supports to increase catalyst dispersion,or as co-catalysts bringing in synergistic catalytic effects.Experimental investigations combined with theoretical computations was expected to provide fundamental and reliable support for the rational design and development of novel rare earth heterogeneous catalysts.
Amorphous Feox–Mn0.1oy Catalyst with Rich Oxygen Vacancies for Ammonia Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nitrogen Oxide at Low Temperatures

Abstract:Amorphous materials have garnered extensive research interest in heterogeneous catalysis because of their high surface area and interconnected micro/mesopores. In this study, an amorphous metal oxides (FeOx-Mn0.1Oy) with large surface areas, sufficient oxygen vacancies, excellent redox properties is prepared for the ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) of NOx. Benefits from the large surface area, this catalyst possess higher adsorption and activation ability for O2 and NO which further enhanced the catalytic activity at low temperatures (90–240 °C). The incorporation of Mn into FeOx species inhibits the crystallization of hematite, further resulting in an increase of the surface area and surface acid sites in the as-prepared catalyst. Furthermore, the number of oxygen vacancies increases by the incorporation of manganese, which reduces the apparent activation energy of hematite and enhances the redox property of the amorphous FeOx–MnOy catalyst.
