Abstract:The state-of-art of researches on rareearth surface engineering and its tribologicalapplications were reviewed in this paper. Thedevelopment of rare earth surface engineering, themechanisms of rare earth element in friction andwear and the diffusion mechanisms of rare earthatoms were summarized. Several points aboutresearch on rare earth surface engineering and itstribological applications were also suggested.
