Abstract:Porous TiO2 microspheres with nanocrystalline have the advantages of big grain size,small crystalline size and high specific surface.In this study,porous TiO2 microspheres with nanocrystalline were fabricated by using butyl titanate as raw material and gelatin as a template with the sol?gel method.Then their properties were character?ized by transmission electron microscope and X?ray diffraction. The results showed that the pure anatase TiO2 was gained and its composite was not changed when the gelatin solution was added.However,the gelatin refined and re?arranged TiO2 crystallizes.It was demonstrated that porous TiO2 microspheres with the diameter of about 200?500 nm were formed,and consisted of nanocrystallizes with the average size of(14?3 ± 0?9)nm and pores about 2?5 nm.Mo?reover,the formation mechanism of porous TiO2 microspheres was analyzed.

Abstract:TiO2 microspheres with porous frameworks have been prepared by controlled hydrolysis of Ti(OC4H9-n)(4) with water generated "in situ" via an esterification reaction between acetic acid and ethanol, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption methods. The TiO2 microspheres, with diameters ranging from 100 to 500 nm, were constructed by pure anatase particles with average crystalline size of 16.4 nm. The formation of porous structure might be related to slow hydrolysis under ultrasound irradiation. The formation of unique anatase should be attributed to the presence SO42- ions. Abstract:A novel synthetic procedure is described for the fabrication of macroporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) films with an ordered, uniform pore framework comprised of nanocrystalline anatase mainly. The synthetic approach involved several processes. First, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres (87 nm) were synthesized by using a dispersion polymerization technique in the presence of Fenton reagent (FeSO4/ H2O2) as a novel initiator, which has advantages such as simple and fast polymerization process without deoxygenation. Next, the templates of PMMA microspheres were assembled on clean substrates by dip-drawing technique. Finally, the macroporous TiO2 films with the average size of pores about 87 nm were obtained by sol-dipping template method and calcination to remove the templates at 550 degrees C. The test results of X-ray diffraction indicate that the nanocrystalline of anatase formed after calcination. The mechanisms of PMMA polymerization and template formation were proposed. Furthermore, both structures and morphologies of the composite films were investigated with field emission scanning electron microscope, and the processes of the thermal decomposition of PMMA and TiO2 gel were also discussed with thermo gravimetric analysis. This ordered and uniform pore framework could be used as the promising ultrafilter membranes showing active photocatalysis without intensive fouling. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Mesoporous core-shell structured titanium dioxide (TiO2) microspheres were successfully prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal method using polyethylene glycol (PEG, MW 2000) as the soft template. The products were characterized in light of the morphology and chemical composition using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques. The XRD patterns show that the direct hydrothermal synthesized product is anatase titanium dioxide. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area is 113.8 m(2)/g, and the average pore size is 5.78 nm. In addition, the morphology evolution of core-shell structured titanium dioxide with the different hydrothermal times was also studied. Research shows that the shell morphology and the core size of the core-shell TiO2 spheres can be easily tuned by controlling the hydrothermal time through the Ostwald ripening process. A possible growth mechanism of the mesoporous core-shell structured TiO2 hollow microspheres was also proposed in this paper.

Abstract:Titania with various nanostructures can be synthesized by several F−-mediated procedures. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel multi-facet microsphere consisting of etched single-crystalline anatase by simply immersing metallic Ti plates in an HF aqueous solution under hydrothermal conditions. The etched multi-facet sphere was found to grow through the nucleation and growth of truncated bipyramids on a previously precipitated one to assemble a microsphere, and its subsequent etching by HF to expose the thermodynamic stable {101} facets. The photocatalytic activity of such etched multi-facet sphere thin films was evaluated utilizing rhodamine B and sulfonic salicylic acid in water as target molecules and compared with commercial Degussa P25 titania nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a novel and simple method for synthesizing the microspheres self-assembled from ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanosheets with a high percentage of (001) facets via the hydrolysis process of the single-reagent (potassium fluorotitanate). We then used optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution confocal laser Raman spectroscopy to characterize the microspheres generated under different conditions. The study found that the size of the anatase TiO2 microspheres synthesized was 0.5–3 μm. As the synthesis time increased, the corroded surface of the microspheres gradually increased, resulting in the gradual disappearance of the edges and corners of the anatase nanosheets. The exposure percentage of the (001) facets of ultrathin anatase nanosheets synthesized for 2 h at 180–200 °C are close to 100%. The microsphere whose surface is completely covered by these anatase nanosheets also has nearly 100% exposed (001) facets. This new anatase nanosheet-based self-assembled microsphere will have great application potential in pollution prevention, environmental protection, and energy fields.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 solid microspheres with different morphologies have been synthesized on a large scale by a simple hydrothermal method using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the 3D solid microspheres, with an average diameter from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers, are composed of numerous anatase TiO2 particles. In addition, the morphologies of the as-prepared 3D solid microspheres can be controlled by adjusting the dosage of NH4F and the reaction temperatures. The present study has enlarged the family of 3D solid microspheres, and offers a possible route for the synthesis of other inorganic hierarchical structures.

Abstract:Sub-micron sized hollow spheres were fabricated starting from core-shell particles. Polystyrene particles with a size of 345 nm were coated with a titania shell of 15 nm thickness by a sol-gel method. The core-shell particles prepared were annealed at 500degreesC in air to remove the polystyrene core and crystallize the titania shell. The crystal structure of the hollow titania shell was anatase and its surface area was 91.0 m(2)/g.

Abstract:Porous anatase TiO2 microspheres composed of {010}-faceted nanobelts were synthesized through simple thermal treatment of a titanium glycerolate precursor. The as-prepared TiO2 nanomaterial was shown to serve as an efficient photocatalyst for H-2 evolution, and its activity was more than twice that of the benchmark P25 TiO2.

Abstract:The AlOOH core/shell microspheres were successfully synthesized via a one-step template-free hydrothermal route. By simply changing the ratio of alcohol to water, core/shell microspheres constructed with nanoplatelets and their curling structures could be selectively synthesized. A series of controlled experiments have also been carried out to better understand the formation mechanism of AlOOH spheres and the function of reactants used in the experiments. The formation of core/shell structures may involve aggregation of amorphous building clusters into spheres and their subsequent reaction, dissolution, and re-deposition process. The morphology, structure, and composition of the spheres are investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The specific surface area and pore-size distribution of the obtained product as determined by gas-sorption measurements show that the boehmite core–shell microspheres exhibit high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and porosity properties. The as-prepared AlOOH core–shell superstructures are powerful in the removal of Congo red pollutant from waste water.

Abstract:The hydrolysis of tetracthoxysilane (TEOS) occurred on the surface of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microshperes immediately after these microshperes were prepared in TEOS. Micron-sized hollow SiO2 spheres were obtained by calcination of the coated PMMA microshperes. It was found that the final hollow spheres were constituted by small SiO2 particles.

Abstract:Mesoporous anatase titania spheres with an average size of approx. 400nm were facilely prepared at low temperature by treating the titanium glycolate precursor spheres with hot water (∼100°C). The surface of the precursor particle became rough and the anatase phase began to form when it was treated with hot water for 1.5h. With increasing treatment time, the crystallinity of the particles was improved, and the nanoporous structure further formed in the interior of the spheres. When the treatment time was prolonged to 6h, the mesoporous anatase spheres were finally obtained, and they were composed of interconnected nanocrystals with the size less than 15nm and pores with the mean size of 8.31nm. The as-prepared mesoporous anatase titania spheres exhibited excellent adsorption capacity and better photocatalytic activity compared with the commercial photocatalyst P-25 due to the large specific surface area. Ostwald ripening and surface energy effects were presumed to play an important role in the formation of mesoporous structure and anatase nanocrystals.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2 nanomaterials have been investigated for decades; however, most endeavors have been focused on the exploration of their potentials in various applications, and the fundamental research for preparing mesoporous TiO2 in a highly controllable manner remains unfruitful. Herein, we report a facile pressure-driven oriented assembly approach to synthesize an unprecedented type of dehiscent mesoporous TiO2 microspheres with radial mesopore channels and oriented rutile crystallites. By varying the concentrated HCl amount, we have been able to produce TiO2 microspheres with well-controlled rutile/anatase phase ratio. By further manipulating the reaction conditions including solvent evaporation time and hydrothermal temperature, the oriented growth with tunable crevices can also be well manipulated. Such dehiscent mesoporous TiO2 microspheres have exhibited great permeability and excellent photocatalytic properties for H2 generation. We believe that the high structural complexity and predictability of this method offers great opportunities in enhancing the performance of TiO2-based materials.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide mesoporous microspheres with high surface area was successfully prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal approach using polyethylene glycol (PEG, MW 200) as the soft template. Study shows that similar to 15 nm TiO2 nanoparticles was assembled into similar to 1.1 mu m mesoporous microspheres. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of TiO2 microsphere is up to 137 m(2)/g. TiO2 mesoporous microspheres were fabricated onto the surface of fluorine-doped tin oxide glass and used as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells, which exhibits an open circuit photovoltage of 0.80 V and an overall conversion efficiency of 6.6%. Owing to the enhanced dye loading and light-harvesting efficiency, a 26% improvement in the overall conversion efficiency was achieved when compared with the commercial Degussa P-25 nanoparticles. Abstract:Anatase-type TiO2 hollow spheres with a diameter of ∼1μm and shell thickness of ∼150nm are successfully fabricated via the surface erosion route. Study shows the repeated dissolution–crystallization process governing the formation process of TiO2 hollow spheres, i.e., the dissolution of titanium powder and crystallization of TiO2 on the surface of titanium, then the dissolution of surface TiO2 and the recrystallization and assembly of TiO2 nanoparticles on the gas–liquid interface of the gas bubble template finally makes the formation of TiO2 hollow spheres with the depletion of titanium.

Abstract:Porous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) microspheres (MS) were prepared by a facile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with commercial colloidal silica as a sacrificial template. The morphology structure, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas and pore size distribution of TiO 2 microspheres were studied by changing the content and diameter of the silica template in detail. These porous micro-sized MS are composed of anatase TiO 2 nanocrystallites of 5–10 nm and have unique bimodal mesopores. The largest specific surface area of 112.3 m 2 /g has been achieved using 60 wt% 20 nm silica as a template. When used as photocatalysts, the best photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared porous MS is comparable to commercial P25 nanopowders. Moreover, the micro-size and tailored properties from the design that appear during the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process give these porous MS a promising application in photocatalytic reaction.
