Abstract:Hierarchical TiO2 submicroflowers (HTFs) were mixed with anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (TNPs) to fabricate efficient photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). HTFs with high specific surface area (98 m(2)g(-1)) and favorable dimension (similar to 660 nm) facilitate dye loading and light scattering of photoanodes, boosting the light harvesting capability of DSSCs. Moreover, due to the high crystallinity and reduced defects or grain boundaries, the HTFs embedded in the photoanodes act as efficient conductive pathways for charges. With excessive incorporation of HTFs, on the other hand, inevitable shrink of HTFs after calcination causes poor connectivity of TiO2 network and even cracks in the photoanodes, deteriorating the charge collection capability of DSSCs. As a result, a balance should be made between optical and photoelectrochemical characteristics of photoanodes via HTF introduction. The DSSC based on 10 wt % HTFs embedded photoanode exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 6.4%, which is 52.4% higher than that of DSSCs with TNP-based photoanodes. Abstract:Titania with various nanostructures can be synthesized by several F−-mediated procedures. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel multi-facet microsphere consisting of etched single-crystalline anatase by simply immersing metallic Ti plates in an HF aqueous solution under hydrothermal conditions. The etched multi-facet sphere was found to grow through the nucleation and growth of truncated bipyramids on a previously precipitated one to assemble a microsphere, and its subsequent etching by HF to expose the thermodynamic stable {101} facets. The photocatalytic activity of such etched multi-facet sphere thin films was evaluated utilizing rhodamine B and sulfonic salicylic acid in water as target molecules and compared with commercial Degussa P25 titania nanoparticles.

Abstract:Fabrication of nanocrystals from their disordered solid-state precursors represents a new synthetic strategy. Compared to the widely used chemical vapor deposition and wet-chemistry based methods employing gas and liquid phased precursors, the solid-state transformation of disordered solid precursors to highly ordered crystals is a great challenge due to the severely restricted mass transport and inadequate structural directing mechanism. Herein, we report a rapid-heating-triggered in situ solid-state crystal growth method capable of transforming amorphous TiO2 nanotubes into anatase nanocrystals with well-defined facets and uniform sizes within a minute. The results obtained from in situ transmission electron microscopy and three-dimensional phase-field simulation indicate that the basic building blocks are formed through mechanical rupture of an amorphous TiO2 nanotube precursor, followed by an enhanced diffusion and concomitant oriented attachment onto TiO2 crystal nuclei mediated by the fluorine species evolved from the rapid heating. The unique crystal growth demonstrated in this work provides an alternative synthetic means for fabrication of other nanocrystals from solid-state precursors.

Abstract:The heterogeneous photocatalysis technique to treat dye effluents demands micrometer-sized titania aggregates with one-dimensional nanostructures, which possess high photocatalytic activity and at the same time facilitate the catalyst-recovery from a slurry system. In this study, the solution remained after interactions between metallic Ti and hydrogen peroxide was subjected to an alkaline hydrothermal treatment. Microspheres with extremely uniform sizes of ca. 2 μm in diameter were achieved after a subsequent proton exchange followed by calcination in air. The microspheres were urchin-like aggregates of radially assembled nanowires, which consisted of chain-like anatase single crystallites with an average diameter of 20-25 nm. The homogeneous microspheres calcinated at 600°C possessed a surface area of 45.4m(2)/g and exhibited an excellent activity to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water, which is significantly higher than that of P25 titania nanoparticles. Because of the much easier recovery of the photocatalyst, the homogeneous microspheres synthesized herein may find practical applications in efficient photocatalytic treatments of dye effluents.

Abstract:Macroporous TiO2 microspheres have been synthesized on a large scale by a facile hydrothermal process using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source, ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the anatase TiO2 microspheres are well-crystalline with an average diameter of 5.43μm. N2 adsorption–desorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis reveal that the as-prepared TiO2 microspheres are composed of numerous pore networks with an average pore diameter of 274nm and porosity of 39.8%. In addition, the formation mechanisms of macroporous TiO2 microspheres were also investigated.

Abstract:Novel CaTiO3 microspheres composed of nanosheets have been successfully prepared via a very simple solvothermal process in ethanol aqueous solution without any template or surfactant. The microstructure and morphology are characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The effects of the reaction time, reaction temperature, and molar ratio of ethanol/water on the formation of the spherical structure have been investigated. CaTiO3 microspheres assembled by nanosheet units have been obtained by controlling the molar ratio of water/ethanol. The growth mechanism has been proposed based on the results of time-dependent experiments. It is proposed that amorphous particles transformed to nanosheets, and nanosheets self assembly into solid microspheres, then nanosheets building units further oriented growth along [1 1 0] direction result in the formation of nanosheets building units, and finally form the microsphere composed of nanosheets. CaTiO3 microspheres show higher photocatalytic activity than randomly aggregated nanosheets. In addition, CaTiO3 microspheres are stable during the photocatalytic reaction and more convenient to store and handle as a micrometre-scale structure. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Porous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) microspheres (MS) were prepared by a facile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with commercial colloidal silica as a sacrificial template. The morphology structure, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas and pore size distribution of TiO 2 microspheres were studied by changing the content and diameter of the silica template in detail. These porous micro-sized MS are composed of anatase TiO 2 nanocrystallites of 5–10 nm and have unique bimodal mesopores. The largest specific surface area of 112.3 m 2 /g has been achieved using 60 wt% 20 nm silica as a template. When used as photocatalysts, the best photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared porous MS is comparable to commercial P25 nanopowders. Moreover, the micro-size and tailored properties from the design that appear during the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process give these porous MS a promising application in photocatalytic reaction.
One-pot synthesis of N-F-Cr-doped anatase TiO₂ microspheres with nearly all-(001) surface for enhanced solar absorption.

Abstract:The synthesis and clarifications in structure-property relationship for anatase TiO2 crystals exposing (001) facets have attracted much attention. In this paper, a novel titania microsphere with nearly all-(001) surface was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of a thermal sprayed TiN/Ti coating with HF aqueous solution containing chromium powders. Unlike the conventional (001)-facet exposed anatase crystals, which are highly truncated bipyramids, the crystal achieved in the current investigation is drum-like with a round cross section. The formation of the drum-like crystals was contributed to a balance between the erosion and precipitation of anatase single crystallites. The Cr-doping in anatase was believed to increase the surface deficiency which enhanced the erosion procedure, leading to the drum-like crystals. The XPS analysis confirmed the incorporations of N, F and Cr in the microsized anatase crystals through the one-pot reaction, which led to a significantly enhanced solar absorption. The UV-Vis diffuse reflectance revealed a band-to-band red-shift of the band gap of the anatase crystals to 1.60 eV, which is contributed mainly to the homogeneous Cr-doping.

Abstract:Porous anatase TiO2 microspheres composed of {010}-faceted nanobelts were synthesized through simple thermal treatment of a titanium glycerolate precursor. The as-prepared TiO2 nanomaterial was shown to serve as an efficient photocatalyst for H-2 evolution, and its activity was more than twice that of the benchmark P25 TiO2.

Abstract:Nanostructured assembly of hierarchical spherical TiO2 were synthesized via an hydrothermal route usiug TiCl3 as Ti source, polyacrylamide (PAM) and urea as additives. The morphology, crystal phases, porous structures and UV-Vis spectra of the product was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(UV-Vis DRS). The results show that the nanostructured spherical TiO2 in a diameter range of 400 similar to 600 nm are assembled by 20-40 nm nanoparticles. PAM and urea play an important role on morphology and crystal phases of the nanostructured hierarchical spherical TiO2. The photocatalytic activity of the nanostructured hierarchical spherical TiO2 was also investigated in the degradation of methyl orange under UV light.

Abstract:Nanosized TiO2 powder of high surface area was prepared from an aqueous solution of titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide using a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) reactor which uses superheated water at 400°C and 24.1MPa as a crystallizing medium. Freeze-dried nano-TiO2 was heat-treated in air over a range of temperatures and then the resulting powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), BET surface area measurement, and Raman spectroscopy. The particle size of the ‘as-prepared’ TiO2 made using CHFS was ca. 4.8nm (by HR-TEM), and grew with increasing heat-treatment temperature. It was found that the onset of the anatase–rutile transition of heat-treated nano-TiO2 in air occurred at 500°C and reached 100% rutile at 900°C. The Raman band (Eg) at ∼150cm−1 of anatase (nano-TiO2) softens as the particle size increases with heat-treatment temperature (up to 600°C). The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 powders for the decolourisation of methylene blue dye was assessed. The effects of nano-TiO2 anatase-rutile phase composition, crystallinity, and crystallite size on the catalytic activity were investigated.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 solid microspheres with different morphologies have been synthesized on a large scale by a simple hydrothermal method using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the 3D solid microspheres, with an average diameter from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers, are composed of numerous anatase TiO2 particles. In addition, the morphologies of the as-prepared 3D solid microspheres can be controlled by adjusting the dosage of NH4F and the reaction temperatures. The present study has enlarged the family of 3D solid microspheres, and offers a possible route for the synthesis of other inorganic hierarchical structures.
Synthesis and Characterization of Anatase TiO2 Microspheres Self-Assembled by Ultrathin Nanosheets

Abstract:In this paper, we report a novel and simple method for synthesizing the microspheres self-assembled from ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanosheets with a high percentage of (001) facets via the hydrolysis process of the single-reagent (potassium fluorotitanate). We then used optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution confocal laser Raman spectroscopy to characterize the microspheres generated under different conditions. The study found that the size of the anatase TiO2 microspheres synthesized was 0.5–3 μm. As the synthesis time increased, the corroded surface of the microspheres gradually increased, resulting in the gradual disappearance of the edges and corners of the anatase nanosheets. The exposure percentage of the (001) facets of ultrathin anatase nanosheets synthesized for 2 h at 180–200 °C are close to 100%. The microsphere whose surface is completely covered by these anatase nanosheets also has nearly 100% exposed (001) facets. This new anatase nanosheet-based self-assembled microsphere will have great application potential in pollution prevention, environmental protection, and energy fields.

Abstract:A favorable micro-nanostructure is crucial for obtaining superior properties. However, the synthetic techniques for synthesizing the complex morphology still remain a challenge. In this work, we synthesized core-shell-structured submicrometer-sized mesoporous TiO2 microspheres (MTMs) constructed with mesoporous TiO2 polyhedrons through a novel anisotropic etching route. The outer shell of the obtained TiO2 microsphere is constructed by a mesoporous TiO2 single-crystal nanopolyhedron with exposed (101) facets. Hydrogen peroxide was used as the bubble generator, which simultaneously acted as gas templates for the formation of TiO2 microspheres. Fluorine ions facilitate the formation of anatase (001) facets at reaction. The anisotropic etching accrued along the [101] direction with an increase in fluorine ions, leaving mesoporous structures and highly exposed (101) facets. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), using the as-prepared product as a light-scatting layer, showed a 29.4% increase in conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Well ordered, uniform 3D open macro/mesoporous TiO2 hollow microspheres with highly crystalline anatase thin shells have been successfully synthesized by a simple solvent evaporation-driven confined self-assembly method. Abstract:Uniform discrete mesoporous titania microspheres have been synthesized via a facile and controllable interface-directed co-assembly approach by using 3-dimensional macroporous carbon (3DOMC) as the nanoreactor for the confined co-assembly of template molecules and titania source. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, hollow mesoporous microspheres and hemi-microspheres can also be synthesized. The obtained mesoporous TiO2 microspheres possess a large pore size (4.7nm), high accessible surface area (145m2/g), large pore volume (0.26cm3/g) and highly crystallized anatase pore walls. The dye-sensitized solar cell based on the mesoporous TiO2 microspheres exhibits high photoconversion efficiencies up to 8.5%, which are largely attributed to their intrinsic high surface area, high porosity and well-connected crystalline framework.

Abstract:Nanomaterials play important role in performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this paper, highly phase pure anatase TiO2 microspheres were synthesized using a low-cost hydrothermal route. Initially, X-ray diffraction studies and Raman spectroscopic analysis were carried out, and the formation of tetragonal structure of TiO2 with the anatase phase was confirmed. The UV–Vis DRS studies showed the excellent reflectance and optical band-gap energy of 3.29 eV. The well-interconnected spherical nanoparticles with different sizes were examined by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic analysis. The fabricated dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) composed of prepared TiO2 microspheres as photoanode exhibited a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) (η) of 5.4% as compared to commercial P25 with PCE of 3.6%. The higher Jsc (12.03 mA/cm2) in the fabricated DSSC due to efficient dye loading capacity and high light-scattering property was also observed.

Abstract:TiO 2 hollow microspheres have been synthesized by a template free hydrothermal method, and the structure and photocatalytic properties have been characterized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that anatase TiO 2 with better cystallinity is obtained under the hydrothermal conditions of 160°C, and the structure is reserved even after post-treated at the temperature of 900°C, but when the treated temperature increased to 1100°C, the phase transformed to rutile TiO 2. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) images indicated that the obtained anatase phase TiO 2 samples are hollow microspheres, with the diameter of 1 μm, which are assembled by TiO 2 nanoparticles with the size of 20-30 nm. Photocatalytic test showed that the anatase phase TiO 2 samples have better photocatalytic and oxidation properties, with the degradation of rhodamine B solution being about 100% after 25 min.
