Abstract:Debates will never come to an end among academics since Mou Zongsan raises his concept of self-negation which is beyond common comprehensions.This article poses three basic meanings of self-negation,namely,"rang kai yi bu","xia jiang ning ju",and "she zhi gui ren".With these three points the concept of self-negation can be more easily caught.

Abstract:This paper is based on the Rule of Thirds which the present author has held fast to for many years to interpret the concept of self-negation raised by Mou Zongsan.By this rule,cultural structure can be divided into three different levels as carnal desire,wisdom,and morals.Chinese culture holds highly of morals while attaching less importance to wisdom.Thus in order to develop science and democracy,we have to rang kai yi bu(take a step aside),xia jiang ning ju(descend and condense),and meanwhile she zhi gui ren(subordinate intellect to morality),maintaining our own advantages.Mou Zongsan's concept of self-negation summarizes those contents and is absolutely meaningful.

Abstract:Self-negation is an essential part of Mou Zongsan's Confucian thought.However there are different views on when the concept origins.If we take a careful and systematic research on Mou Zongsan's relevant works,it is not hard to draw conclusion that the concept first evolves from the late 1940s,rather than early or mid of 1950s that is popularly believed.

Abstract:The notion of the “Self” is one of the most critical issues in contemporary cognitive science. Whether the self is a single and independent real entity or a collection of constantly changing experiences has been at the core of debates between the substance theory and the illusion theory. Compared to the neglect of this issue in Western tradition studies, the meticulous practice of mindfulness/awareness in Eastern research traditions has long focused on this contradiction. This paper navigates the intricate dimensions of the “Self” by weaving together the Oriental framework of the five aggregates with the Middle Way, the principles of constructivism, and the empirical methodologies of experimental philosophy. This approach bridges the gap by synthesizing introspective first-person experiences with objective third-person scientific observations to enrich the understanding of self-constructivism. The implications of these findings extend into the practical realms of psychology and philosophy, offering a scaffold for future research to elucidate the multifaceted nature of the self further.

Abstract:In the process of Mou zongsan' s philosophical exploration,the theory of innate moral mind self-negation have three significances which in epistemology, historical-cultural philosophy and ontology separately. The syntheses in ontology and the 'moral practice’ definition made this theory deepen, but also entangled by cultural appeal and philosophical exploration. Due to the special definition of 'self-negation’, this theory differs from Hegel' s Spirit dialectic development and transforms Kant' s 'transcendental distinction’ theoretical formation, revealing the connotation of 'radical idealism’.

Abstract:This essay thinks through Nanguo Ziqi's famous "I lost myself" ( wu sang wo 吾喪我) remark in the Qiwulun 齊物論 in light of Weil's notion of decreation. The desire to undo the self is paradoxical, and most philosophical interpretations of the Zhuangzi passage try to avoid the paradox of "I lost myself" by positing various levels of self. Weil's decreation embraces the paradox, and thereby helps clarify how Nanguo's "I lost myself" connects with his subsequent metaphor of pipes of Heaven. More broadly, this essay is a first step in drawing together these two uniquely unsystematic and paradoxical thinkers.

Abstract:The doctrine of Xin Zhu (形著说),though one of the constituent parts of Mou Zongsan’ Confucianist thoughts, has been seldom studied in a systematic way so far. The present paper is, therefore, meant to query this well-known point of view so as to usher in a new phase in Mou Zongsan studies. And the conclusion is that this doctrine is meanwhile of important theoretical significances, yet it fails to adopt a valid approach at the very beginning. As a result, not only it cannot crack the hard nuts in theory, but also involves itself in redundancy and repetition.

Abstract:One key viewpoint of Mou Zongsan holds that the concept of thing-in-itself is not an idea of fact,but only a concept of valuation.The author of this article clearly expounds three different implications in the concept of thing-in-itself by following the logical thinking of Kant's Critical Philosophy.The author also points out that the concept of thing-in-itself not only includes the content of valuation,but also involves the meaning of fact.Because Mou Zongsan couldn't get a thorough understanding of the different implications in the concept of thing-in-itself,he denies the concept of thing-in-itself as an idea of fact,which will lead to some misunderstanding of this concept.

Abstract:Contemporary discussions of xing are often inspired by the Confucian tradition, but recent studies have brought the Zhuangzi 莊子 to the table as a viable alternative. In this essay, I present three different accounts of xing 性 in the Outer Chapters: (1) the primitivists who emphasize body vitality and simple life, (2) the Huang-Lao 黃老 school that emphasizes the balance among different things and the overall cosmological order, and (3) skill stories that look at individual skill masters rather than people in general or the role of the human species in the cosmos, entertain only the descriptive dimension of xing , and cast doubt on the normative status of xing . These three accounts can be read as responding to each other, and each shares certain themes with the Inner Chapters in different ways. Together, they demonstrate the complexity of the Zhuangzi 's view on xing and complicate attempts of cross-textual comparison.

Abstract:In order to construct his ethic existentialism, Mu Zongsan gave an incorrect interpretation of some Confucian classics of the pre-Qin period and concluded that there had existed such a concept then. From a historical perspective, the pre-Qin Confucians did not form such a concept and Mu Zongsan's theory has evident defects.

Abstract:Abstract In the last century, Western jargon and methodologies have overwhelmed the study of early Chinese texts. In an attempt to somewhat redress the balance, this paper retrieves a core notion from the Zhuangzi , “disputation” ( bian 辯 ) or “distinctions” ( bian 辨 ), to reflect upon a contemporary Western debate, namely about the exclusion of non-Western sources at philosophy departments. The detailed analysis of one anecdote about two states fighting each other on the horns of a snail leads to a view on disputation and its limits. By applying these insights to the “legitimacy of Chinese philosophy” debate, the Zhuangzi can inspire insights and attitudes that tend to be overlooked.

This popular reading has been challenged by Philip Ivanhoe, who argues that Zhuangzi is not a relativist but rather that Zhuangzi articulates a normative theory of benignity. Abstract:In this article we focus on the famous dialogue between Zhuangzi 莊子 and Huizi 惠子 concerning the question whether or not ren 人 (in particular the shengren 聖人) have qing 情. Most scholars have understood qing in this exchange as referring to "feelings" or "emotions." We take issue with such readings. First, we demonstrate that, while Huizi probably understands qing as something like feelings or emotions, Zhuangzi's view is that having qing is connected with making shifei 是非 judgments whereas having no qing means that shifei has no grip on those ren, especially the shengren. What follows is that the expression wuqing 無情 should not be identified as a "doctrine of nonemotion." Instead, wuqing implies that Zhuangzi advises us to lead a life of tranquility, calmness, and stillness. We show that these peaceful attitudes are associated with the idea of wuwei 無為 in the Zhuangzi.

Abstract:Emotion Review, Volume 15, Issue 3, Page 189-199, July 2023. The Zhuangzi, a 4th century BCE Daoist text, is sceptical about the political culture of its time. Those who debated conceptions of a good life were hostile to the views of others. They were intolerant and at times contemptuous of others who did not embody their values. In contrast to such negativity, the Zhuangzi promotes equanimity. The equanimity of the sagely person is grounded in a balance she maintains between engagement and withdrawal. Engaging critically, she problematises the lack of diversity in their options for a good life. By withdrawing, she refuses to be party to the squabbles that perpetuate intolerance. The paper aims to show how equanimity is possible, thereby articulating a new angle on emotions in the Zhuangzi.

Self-Ontology versus Counter-Ontology: The Hermeneutic Basis of Chinese and Western Philosophy

Abstract:The fundamental difference between Chinese and Western philosophy is that between self-ontological thinking and counter-ontological thinking. The former means that the cognitive object and the cognitive subject cannot be separated from each other, thus laying stress on the self presentation of the Self, while the latter indicates that Being is seen, first of all, as an objective existence, and then its objective truth is to be explored. Either self-ontological thinking or counter-ontological thinking is the objective reflection of man’s duality. The self-ontological approach focuses on the examination and study of man’s instrumental subsistence, and the counter-ontological one is concerned about the examination and study of the subsistence of man as the reason of value. Owing to the fact that man’s instrumental dimension and his value dimension are interrelated to, complementary with, and rely on, each other, the development of future philosophy requires that these two modes of thinking; and what is meant by the convergence of Chinese and Western philosophy refers to that either of them should learn from the hermeneutic stance and tradition of the other while keeping their respective traditional hermeneutic basis.

Abstract:This article is one of the author's serial writings to assimilate Ricoeur's three-fold ethical investigation into various areas of human acts of forgetting, including 1) the therapeutic or pathological area, 2) the pragmatic area, dealing with individual and group's self-identity in relation to time and otherness, and 3) the more explicitly ethical-political (social and institutional) area, in a wide context. Corresponding to the second area of the Ricoeurian three-fold investigation, this paper probes the ethical dimension of the Zhuangzian forgetfulness of personal identity in relation to time and otherness. It first examines textual materials of the Zhuangzi to navigate on the narrative meanings of forgetting oneself or personal identity, and then delves into three domains of Zhuangzian conception on the forgetting of one's fixed identity. Finally, it elaborates on the Zhuangzian notion of relational autonomy or agency that underlies the practice of forgetfulness of oneself or personal identity.
