Abstract:The I or the self is the most intimate and familiar phenomena, but it is one of the most perplexing phenomenon in our intellectual life. The mind science has deeply studied various aspects of mental agents such as intentionality, perception, behavior, memory, learning, image, emotion, thinking, language, imagination, unconscious and even consciousness, however, unless tied closely with the notion of the self, all the aspects of mind mentioned above can be significatively talked about. At the same time, we have to immediately emphasize that the self is not a pole of entity like homunculus. So we argue that the self can be understood just from a perspective of structure. Human ordinary experience shows that the self primarily begins with a kind of living phenomena. F. Maturana J. Varela described the general structure of the self as a living being in terms of the notion of autopoeisis. The most basic feature of living beings—even the simplest live beings—is that living beings are autonomous individuals which have built a kind of the most primitive relationship of intentionality or meaning with the world. There are different morphologies of self in the evolutionary and developmental different levels of life-mind. The unified sense of self is the most direct experience in human ordinary life, which our knowledge of the self starts from. Unlike the self as a pure living being, how does the self with the sense of self come to being? A. Dmamasio argues that the neurobiology of consciousness faces two problems: the problem of how the movie-in-the-brain is generated, and the problem of how the brain generates the sense that there is an observer and owner for the movie, namely the sense of self. How are feelings embodied?—it is central to the current study of neural self. The perplexity from the self not only consists in the inherent particularity, but also the particular circulation relationship between the self and the world. Only when the circulation relationship is understood well, we can completely grasp the nature of self.
