Abstract:Self-negation is an essential part of Mou Zongsan's Confucian thought.However there are different views on when the concept origins.If we take a careful and systematic research on Mou Zongsan's relevant works,it is not hard to draw conclusion that the concept first evolves from the late 1940s,rather than early or mid of 1950s that is popularly believed.

Abstract:Debates will never come to an end among academics since Mou Zongsan raises his concept of self-negation which is beyond common comprehensions.This article poses three basic meanings of self-negation,namely,"rang kai yi bu","xia jiang ning ju",and "she zhi gui ren".With these three points the concept of self-negation can be more easily caught.

Abstract:In the process of Mou zongsan' s philosophical exploration,the theory of innate moral mind self-negation have three significances which in epistemology, historical-cultural philosophy and ontology separately. The syntheses in ontology and the 'moral practice’ definition made this theory deepen, but also entangled by cultural appeal and philosophical exploration. Due to the special definition of 'self-negation’, this theory differs from Hegel' s Spirit dialectic development and transforms Kant' s 'transcendental distinction’ theoretical formation, revealing the connotation of 'radical idealism’.

Abstract:The doctrine of Xin Zhu (形著说),though one of the constituent parts of Mou Zongsan’ Confucianist thoughts, has been seldom studied in a systematic way so far. The present paper is, therefore, meant to query this well-known point of view so as to usher in a new phase in Mou Zongsan studies. And the conclusion is that this doctrine is meanwhile of important theoretical significances, yet it fails to adopt a valid approach at the very beginning. As a result, not only it cannot crack the hard nuts in theory, but also involves itself in redundancy and repetition.

Abstract:This paper is based on the Rule of Thirds which the present author has held fast to for many years to interpret the concept of self-negation raised by Mou Zongsan.By this rule,cultural structure can be divided into three different levels as carnal desire,wisdom,and morals.Chinese culture holds highly of morals while attaching less importance to wisdom.Thus in order to develop science and democracy,we have to rang kai yi bu(take a step aside),xia jiang ning ju(descend and condense),and meanwhile she zhi gui ren(subordinate intellect to morality),maintaining our own advantages.Mou Zongsan's concept of self-negation summarizes those contents and is absolutely meaningful.

Abstract:In order to construct his ethic existentialism, Mu Zongsan gave an incorrect interpretation of some Confucian classics of the pre-Qin period and concluded that there had existed such a concept then. From a historical perspective, the pre-Qin Confucians did not form such a concept and Mu Zongsan's theory has evident defects.

Abstract:The interpretation of vertical relationships is an important conception in Mou Zongsan's Confucianism.This conception is aimed at arguing that conscience is able to create beings.With its creation,everything in the universe has its moral significance and value and every case of moral achievement changes:the sufferings and sins followed by sacrifice to achieve morality are transformed into special happiness.From this we can solve the problem of perfect good(summum bonum) in Kant.However,due to some defects in his ontology,Mou Zongsan makes much confusion which is difficult to understand.

Abstract:Mouzongsan considers that thing-in-itself in Kant’s theory is not an Idea of Fact, but a concept of Valuation, which is his representative viewpoint. I have pointed out in my previous published paper, that such point of view is a partial understanding of the connection between thing-in-itself and Noumenal Fact. An Examination of the Origin of the Concept of Guoxue in Modern Time

Abstract:There are three viewpoints of the origin of the concept of "guoxue" in modern China at present, that is, they were put forward by Huang Zun-xian in 1887, by Liang Qi-chao in 1902 and by Wu Ru-lun in 1902 respectively. As a matter of fact, Huang Zun-xian just introduced the word "guoxue" in Chinese rather than the concept "guoxue". In August of 1902 Wu Ru-lun just wrote down in his journal the suggestion put forward by Japanese scholars who proposed to highlight "guoxue" in China, but he didn’t actually advocate it himself. Although Liang talked about the concept of "guoxue" in modern sense, he was not the first person to do so. After analysis of the literature, the author found it was Tu Ren-shou who first used the concept "guoxue" to highlight Chinese traditional Confucius.

Abstract:One key viewpoint of Mou Zongsan holds that the concept of thing-in-itself is not an idea of fact,but only a concept of valuation.The author of this article clearly expounds three different implications in the concept of thing-in-itself by following the logical thinking of Kant's Critical Philosophy.The author also points out that the concept of thing-in-itself not only includes the content of valuation,but also involves the meaning of fact.Because Mou Zongsan couldn't get a thorough understanding of the different implications in the concept of thing-in-itself,he denies the concept of thing-in-itself as an idea of fact,which will lead to some misunderstanding of this concept.

Abstract:Zhang Zhu-po's remarks on Wu Yue-niang have been different from other critics.His total negation of Wu Yue-niang is different from most critics' theories and is beyond the readers' anticipation,which is also distant to the image of Wu Yue-niang in the story.As to this point,he has recognized,why has he made such a remark? Abstract:As the founders of Contemporary Neo-Confucianism, Mou Zongsan and Tang Junyi developed different interpretations of Zhang Zai’s and Wang Fuzhi’s philosophies of qi. In this essay, both the strength and weakness of their interpretations will be critically examined. As a contrast, an alternative interpretation of the School of qi in Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism will be outlined. This new interpretation will uncover that, like Leibniz, Zhang Zai and Wang Fuzhi introduced a non-substantivalist approach in natural philosophy in terms of an innovative concept of force. This interpretation not only helps to show the limitations of Mou Zongsan’s and Tang Junyi’s understandings of Zhang Zai’s and Wang Fuzhi’s doctrines of qi, but also indicates a way to bridge the traditional Chinese philosophy of nature and modern physics. More generally, our critical discussions will bring to light a new angle with which to re-appreciate Mou Zongsan’s and Tang Junyi’s contributions to the development of Confucianism.

Abstract:In his Mandala model of the self, Taiwanese scholar Kwang-Kuo Hwang sees each human being as a combination or intersection of private individual and social person, and also of knowledge and action. To further elaborate the model-with a particular emphasis on teaching/learning, the development of the ideal self and spiritual transcendence-this article will explore the psychological process of self-cultivation in the light of traditional Confucian thinking, which means keeping a balance between inner/outer and self/other. The Neo-Confucian thinker Zhongsha Mou's theories of "the awareness of unexpected developments" and his meditation/cognitive thinking opposition will also be discussed. The analyzed sources will include the traditional Confucian classics (the Four Books and Liji, or Classic of Rites) and especially the "Lessons for Learning (Xue-Ji)" in the Classic of Rites (Liji), along with the relevant textual research. Based upon a cultural-semantic analysis of these classics as well as of Hwang's central ideas, the author attempts to further conceptualize the process of cultivating the ideal self in Confucian education.

Abstract:Previous researches hold that Jin Shengtan's theory of mind and nature, which focuses on the doctrine Zhong (loyalty) and Shu (reciprocity), is targeted on hypocrites, and advocates a natural human nature as well. Nevertheless, it somewhat retains the Confucianist notion of ethics. The Doctrine of Zhong and Shu is virtually sort of theory of human nature that advocates the unity of the highest sincerity and the highest good. What it opposes is not only the hypocrites but also the dilemma of the hypocrisy and the persistence in good in late-Ming thought. In the meantime, the Doctrine of Zhong and Shu also tries to rectify the deviation of such previous doctrines as Wang Ji's Doctrine of Si Wu and Li Zhi's Doctrine of Tong Xin Shuo. The flaw in the Doctrine of Zhong and Shu just lies in its intention to return to the previous doctrines.

Abstract:One of the features of Mou Zongsan’s Confucianism is to divide Confucianism in Song and Ming Dynastiy into two systems, i.e., vertical and horizontal ones according to the theory of being. But such a division has a great theoretical defect, because the two systems have only a difference in the theory of being, but have no difference on the stream of transcendence. Abstract:This essay thinks through Nanguo Ziqi's famous "I lost myself" ( wu sang wo 吾喪我) remark in the Qiwulun 齊物論 in light of Weil's notion of decreation. The desire to undo the self is paradoxical, and most philosophical interpretations of the Zhuangzi passage try to avoid the paradox of "I lost myself" by positing various levels of self. Weil's decreation embraces the paradox, and thereby helps clarify how Nanguo's "I lost myself" connects with his subsequent metaphor of pipes of Heaven. More broadly, this essay is a first step in drawing together these two uniquely unsystematic and paradoxical thinkers.
