Abstract:The paper introduces the measurement process of various types of LEDs' temperature characteristics. By analyzing the results, a conclusion of relationship between LEDs' chromatic parameters and ambient temperature is given. And some consideration during LED measurement is discussed.

Abstract:The paper discusses practical aspects of LED measurements and problems about how to improve the measurement accuracy of LED spectral properties when using linear CCD sensor. Designed and implemented an instrument for LED spectral measurement based on linear CCD sensor. The CCD sensor has 2048 pixels and ultra-high sensitivity. The duration of one measurement is about 10 ms. For reducing the effect of CCD output noise, a software filtering method is introduced. After software calibration, the accuracy of color temperature is 40 K in the range of 1300 K to 25000 K, and accuracy of wavelength is 0.2 nm in the range of 360 nm to 760 nm. The accuracy of chromaticity coordinated (x, y) or (u, v) is better than 0.003.

Abstract:For light-emitting diode (LED) packages, temperatures, especially junction and phosphor temperature, can greatly affect the optical performance. Thus, measuring the temperatures accurately is of significance for the performance estimation. Among the methods of measuring temperature, physical contact method, represented by thermocouple method, is most convenient and economical In this paper, we measured the junction and phosphor temperature of LED packages by thermocouple. In the experiments to measure junction temperature of a blue LED module, we simplified the judgment by measuring the air temperature above the bare chip and it was found that the test result was much higher than that obtained by another recognized method. The causes were ascribed to two factors, i.e. thermal resistance of the air gap and the light energy absorption. In the experiments to measure phosphor temperature, plug-in measurement was adopted to eliminate the influence of air gap's thermal resistance. However, the tested value turned out to be even higher. Then the main cause of the inaccurate measurement by thermocouple was attributed to the light energy absorption and conversion. And an experiment was carried out to support the explanation. As a whole, to accurately measure the LED's temperatures by thermocouple, the light absorption effect needs to be considered.

Abstract:This study focuses on the theory, construction and the performance measurement of a spectral-tunable LED light source. The light source is mainly combined by the LED illumination body, the spectral matching module as well as LED control driver module. The LED illumination includes thousands of high power LEDs across the whole visible spectral region. The received iterated data are allocated via LED data distribution card to drive LEDs on the illumination body, and precisely control the current of each LED by PWM (Pulse Width Module), to achieve 256 and above gray scale illumination. Through the study, the spectral-tunable light source with size of 3 by 1.5 square meter including 1700 LEDs has been constructed and the optical performance has been tested. The white light with color temperature of 5000K is taken as the simulation target. The results show that the optical performance such as luminous flux and color temperature are gradually stabilized, which differ due to the LED type. The spectrum distribution is not so accurate to the target one. And some methods to minimize the difference are discussed as well.

Abstract:This paper, through studying of LED luminescence properties, presents a fast measurement method and device of LED sources spatial intensity distribution. This method is based on planar imaging, and it has significant merits of fast, easy operated, informative and real–time. The basic structure is LED luminous energy converges on image space through optical lens of a certain numerical aperture(NA). In image space, the energy on the defocused plane is collected with the imaging detector. Then, calculating energy distribution on object virtual plane from that on the image space defocused plane through imaging relationship. Thus, each point of the LED luminous intensity distribution on object virtual plane can be calculated. Tracepro simulation software is used to simulate energy distribution of the model, and the corresponding data analysis shows that planar imaging can accurately reflect the distribution of the LED light. This method has practical meanings for luminous flux measurement of some LEDs.

Abstract:Effective thermal management is crucial for light-emitting diodes (LED). Thermoelectric cooler (TEC) and microchannel heat sink (MHS) have been demonstrated to be effective for thermal management of LED. However, neither the combination of these two methods, nor the dominant factors which could be effectively adjusted to control the LED temperature, have been reported. In this study, a cooling device integrating TEC and water-cooled microchannel heat sink (WMHS) is proposed to improve the thermal management of high-power LED headlights. The start-up performance of the proposed device, LED + TEC + WMHS, was evaluated and compared with three different systems, namely LED + WMHS, LED + AHS (air-cooled heat sink), and LED + TEC + AHS. Experimental results have demonstrated the best performance of the LED + TEC + WMHS device. Orthogonal experiments based on the Taguchi method were conducted to reveal dominant factors among four variables, including TEC current, water inlet temperature, water flow velocity, and ambient temperature. The results show that effects of all the factors were significant while the TEC current has most important influence on the performance. The variation of the thermal management performance with the levels of the factors were investigated. The LED temperature was only 60.0 degrees C even at severe working conditions (T-a = 80 degrees C, T-i = 55 degrees C) and moderate cooling input (I-TEC = 2 A, u = 0.49 m/s), indicating great thermal management performance of the proposed method. Choosing a cooling system and adjusting the factor levels for different applications were recommended.

Abstract:LED is called the fourth generation of lighting, which has already been widely used in display and illumination devices. The junction temperature has directly influence upon the life time and reliability of high-power LED, so keeping the junction temperature of LED is a key issue. A method researching radiators based on finite element analysis was introduced. In this paper, the heat performance of LED COB (chip on board) packaging was studied. The radiating model of LED street lamp with a radiator was introduced, and simulated the changing of parameters of radiator by ANSYS.

Abstract:Ab stract: -Light Emitting Diode (LED) is quite different from traditional light sources in many aspects. In this paper the practical aspects of LED's measurement and problems are discussed. An integrating sphere system is designed and implemented for LED measurement based on a multi<channel spectrometer. The principle and procedure of the measurement are presented, and then the measurement errors are analyzed. The spectrometer uses a Self<scanning Photodiode (SPD) Array device as the detector which has 256 pixels and ultra<high sensitivity. The system can fulfil fast and accurate measurement for LED's photometric and colorimetric quantities such as total luminous flux, Color Temperature, Color Rending Index (CRI) and color coordinate. This method can avoid the measurement errors by self<absorption effect and mismatch of V (λ).

Abstract:A new non-contact method is proposed to determine the junction temperature of LEDs.The junction temperature of LEDs with different power,packaging materials and colors is measured,which is compared with the result obtained by the forward voltage method.The experiment results reveal that it is a good approach to determine the junction temperature for the high-power LEDs that are packeged with soft silicone gel and the error of the junction temperature can be limited within 4 ℃;when the junction temperature is less than 80 ℃ it's also practical for the 5mm epoxy encapsulated LEDs and the error can be limited within 6 ℃.

Abstract:LED thermal resistance measurement is of great importance for an LED general lighting system.The forward voltage respond of LED contains the RC structure information of the LED lighting system.To extract the thermal resistance and capacitance of sapphire substrate and die bond layer of the LED sample,a thermal measurement platform based on NI 5922 digitizer and LABVIEW is established,forward current stage is applied on the sample LED and at the meantime the forward voltage is fetched and fitted.By comparing the results of data fitting with the thermal resistance got by theoretical calculation and traditional electrical test method,all three sources of data fit quiet well.

Abstract:The junction temperature of high-power LEDs is accurately measured based on forward-voltage method,the precision with ±0.5 ℃ can be obtained.The thermal resistance of LEDs with different chip structure and package technology was compared,and the luminous properties influenced by junction temperature were measured.The results show that the temperature-voltage coefficient 'K' of different chip structure is different.The thermal resistance in package can be reduced by using materials with larger heat conductivity and eutectic bonding technology.The radiation power is directly influenced by the junction temperature.Keeping junction temperature constant,the radiation power increases linearly when the current increases.While keeping cooling condition constant,junction temperature of LEDs with higher thermal resistance increases more rapidly,hence the luminous efficiency decreases more obviously.

Abstract:LED is quite different from traditional light sources in terms of physical size, flux level, spectrum and spatial distribution. It is a big challenge for measuring LED's photometric parameters. This paper developed a multi-channel spectrometer and constructs an equipment using integrating sphere for LED's measurement, then give an example of the measurement result. In this measurement the test LED or a specially designed narrow beam standard lamp is placed on the interior wall of the sphere. A narrow aperture fiber is assembled on the surface of the sphere to transfer the light to the designed multi-channel spectrometer, which calculates the luminous parameters, and there is not any object inside the sphere. Self-absorption by objects (baffles and holders) in the sphere and mismatch of V(λ) will not exist in the flux measuring system for LEDs.

Abstract:The relationship between the LED radiation flux,the heating power and the junction temperature change are demonstrated by experiments.In addition,the experiment data show the relationship of the LED package tp (to) temperature and junction temperature when the driving current changes or the ambient temperature changes,so as to find out the light efficiency reduction,color drift and packaging failure caused by lighting manufacturers' improper application and installation.

Abstract:This study developed an LED thermal resistance and thermal interface material evaluation method using LEDs with an internal sensor unit by both steady-state and transient thermal measurements. The problem of the measurement delay time caused by the current switching, which exist in conventional methods can be avoided in both steady-state and transient thermal measurements. Slight error in junction temperature measurement caused by the self-illumination effect can be identified without the current switching issue. The error is compensated in steady-state thermal measurement and is insignificant in transient measurement. Compared with conventional methods, this method uses low-cost equipment, while realizing improved accuracy.

Abstract:In this review, we meticulously analyze and consolidate various techniques used for measuring the junction temperature of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by examining recent advancements in the field as reported in the literature. We initiate our exploration by delineating the evolution of LED technology and underscore the criticality of junction temperature detection. Subsequently, we delve into two key facets of LED junction temperature assessment: steady-state and transient measurements. Beginning with an examination of innovations in steady-state junction temperature detection, we cover a spectrum of approaches ranging from traditional one-dimensional methods to more advanced three-dimensional techniques. These include micro-thermocouple, liquid crystal thermography (LCT), temperature sensitive optical parameters (TSOPs), and infrared (IR) thermography methods. We provide a comprehensive summary of the contributions made by researchers in this domain, while also elucidating the merits and demerits of each method. Transitioning to transient detection, we offer a detailed overview of various techniques such as the improved T3ster method, an enhanced one-dimensional continuous rectangular wave method (CRWM), and thermal reflection imaging. Additionally, we introduce novel methods leveraging high-speed camera technology and reflected light intensity (h-SCRLI), as well as micro high-speed transient imaging based on reflected light (μ_HSTI). Finally, we provide a critical appraisal of the advantages and limitations inherent in several transient detection methods and offer prognostications on future developments in this burgeoning field.

Abstract:LEDs are temperature sensitive devices. Many other characteristics of LEDs strongly depend on their thermal characteristics. So accurate measurement for the junction temperature and thermal resistance of LEDs is important. The uncertainty analysis in these measurements, which is important for accurate measurements, is given in this paper. The standard evaluation method for measurement uncertainty in GUM is used. The junction temperature of an LED is measured by indirect measurement for its forward voltage under constant current. The uncertainty components are from the measurement for the initial junction temperature, the steady forward voltage, the initial forward voltage and the calibration of the voltage-temperature coefficient. The thermal resistance is calculated with the measured junction temperature and the thermal power. The uncertainty components are from the measurement for the junction temperature, input current and forward voltage. Analysis results show that the uncertainty of the junction temperature is the most dominant uncertainty contribution in the measurement for the thermal resistance. In the junction temperature measurement, the uncertainty in the calibration of the voltage-temperature coefficient contributes significantly. Thermal equilibrium and good thermal conducting condition should be obtained. These results give a better understanding and practice guide to an accurate measurement for the junction temperature and thermal resistance of LEDs.
Achieving Accurate Electro-Optical-thermal Measurements of High-Power LEDs

Abstract:High-power Light Emitting Diode (LED) generates significant amount of heat fluxes that can affect the temperature-dependent properties of the device. This self-heating effect can upset the measurement setup and produce inaccurate readings, leading to misinterpretation of results such as electrical and thermal resistances. Optical, electrical and thermal performances of high-power LED packages were analysed under different temperature feedback controls. The results of these experiments demonstrate the importance of the temperature control module in the measurement setup affecting the device's properties such as the series resistance Rs and the thermal resistance Rth. In the electrical current-voltage measurements, the temperature control module cannot control the self-heating effect effectively, resulting in a lower Rs compared to when the measurements are made manually. In transient thermal measurements, it was found that lower Rth values are obtained when the controller operates in closed-loop adaptive temperature control compared to when it operates in open-loop adaptive temperature control. This paper recommends the manual electrical and open-loop thermal measurement methods for accurate parametric LED analyses.

Abstract:The measurement performance of a CCD-based pyrometer system using a three-color method was evaluated for scientific and engineering metrology. The relationships between the system parameters (exposure time and sensor gain) and the intensity measurements in an integrating sphere experiment were determined for a specific CCD sensor. The pyrometer system uses the three-color method based on the intensity ratio without geometry calibrations. The field measurement characteristics and the effectiveness of coupling the three-color channels were investigated in terms of the temperature measurement uniformity, temperature sensitivity and temperature range of the pyrometer system in standard blackbody tests. The results showed that the temperature non-uniformity is not proportional to the intensity non-uniformity and is in the range of 0.13–2.14%. The relative temperature sensitivities of intensity ratios for different channel combinations are different, which may provide a way to improve the measurement results. The temperature range bandwidth for object with a non-uniform temperature distribution varies from 190 to 270K for this specific CCD-based pyrometer. The performance evaluation conclusions for the system with this specific CCD sensor are general and applicable for pyrometer systems using other CCD sensors.
