Abstract:There are two types of shielding coils which are mainly used in application, "two pairs of coils connected in opposed-polarity" and "four coils connected in parallel". To compare their performances, we mainly focused on measurement error and temperature rise. The comparison was implemented by both electric circuit analysis and physical experiments. Firstly, the currents in the shielding coils and power loss of the two methods were calculated and compared by electric circuit analysis. Secondly, measurement errors were compared by qualitative analysis. Finally, the results from theoretical analysis were verified by physical experiments. For "two pairs of coils connected in opposed-polarity" and "four coils connected in parallel", it is showed that the temperature rise of the former is not more than the later while the measurement error of the former is not less than the later. This conclusion can help design shielding coils of heavy current transformers, especially that used on the bus-bars of power stations with large capacity.

Abstract:So far, there has not been any method that is both effective and accurate enough to test the performance of a heavy current transformer (HCT) under electromagnetic interference from adjacent bus-bars since the primary and adjacent currents are too high to reproduce in a laboratory. A new testing method termed as the "multiple-coil testing method" is presented in this paper to overcome this difficulty. By closely enwinding two coils that are connected in opposed-polarity series on the HCT, the original magnetic field in the core produced by a single external current source can more accurately be simulated. Thus, the performance of the HCT under working conditions can equivalently be tested in a laboratory. By using two pairs of such coils, which are positioned at right angles to the other pair and work independently, this method can simulate the magnetic field from multiple external current sources positioned in arbitrary manner and consequently test the performance of the HCT under electromagnetic interference from multiple current sources. This new method is both accurate and effective, and easy to implement. It can be applied to overcome the testing difficulty of an HCT in a laboratory, which particularly has shielding coils.

Abstract:Applying shielding coils is a practical way to protect current transformers (CTs) for large-capacity generators from the intensive magnetic interference produced by adjacent bus-bars. The aim of this study is to build a simple analytical model for the shielding coils, from which the optimization of the shielding coils can be calculated effectively. Based on an existing stray flux model, a new analytical model for the leakage flux of partial coils is presented, and finite element method-based simulations are carried out to develop empirical equations for the core-pickup factors of the models. Using the flux models, a model of the common four-segment shielding coils is derived. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis is carried out on the optimal performance of the four-segment shielding coils in a typical six-bus-bars scenario. It turns out that the "all parallel" shielding coils with a 45° starting position have the best shielding performance, whereas the "separated loop" shielding coils with a 0° starting position feature the lowest heating value. Physical experiments were performed, which verified all the models and the conclusions proposed in the paper. In addition, for shielding coils with other than the four-segment configuration, the analysis process will generally be the same.

Abstract:The 3-D open boundary eddy current field induced by heavy current flowing in the coils and winding leads in large power transformers is calculated. The eddy current loss and local overheating problem in the tank wall and in the ascending flange of bushings are analyzed and reported in this paper. The effectiveness of a magnetic bypass plate near the coil ends for reducing the eddy current loss and local overheating in the clamp plates is discussed.

Abstract:This paper introduces the researche on the core structure optimization design of heavy protective current transformers which are used in the 1000MW large generator and affected by the adjacent bus-bar.Firstly,the effect of the number of air gaps in the core on the steady and transient state of HPCT is evaluated.Secondly,the ability of resistance to electromagnetic interference is researched based on the air gaps relative to the position of the adjacent bus-bar.Finally,the further improvement measures on the core structure,which will make sure HPCT having enough ability of resisting electromagnetic interference are given.

Abstract:In the design of heavy current transformer,equivalent test is widely conducted to optimize the turns and connections of shielding coils.However,this method is not so accurate,and is of high cost and long period for research.Therefore,a 3D FEM(finite element method) computation of magnetic field for heavy current transformer is presented in this paper.The A-Φ method,which is based on magnetic vector potential and electric scalar potential,is adopted to compute the magnetic fields.And the indirect field-circuit coupling approach is used to consider the effect of external circuits.Considering the interference of stray flux from adjacent bus-bar,the maximal magnetic flux density in iron core and the currents in shielding coils are computed,and their variation with position are determined as well.Consistency of the simulation and theoretical results demonstrates that 3D FEM could be used to compute the magnetic field of heavy current transformer,thereby to replace the high-cost equivalent test.

Abstract:The shielding ability of shielding windings around heavy protective current transformers (HPCT) is usually evaluated using an equivalent testing method. That has large uncertainty. Two new equivalent testing methods are presented here to test the shielding of an HPCT used in large 1000 MW generators with a finite-element method also used to evaluate the results. The parameters for the two equivalent testing methods are given by numerical simulations of the electromagnetics.

Abstract:The non uniformly-distributed equal ampere-turns test,which concentrates the primary turns on one part of the current transformer's core,was presented to measure the error of current transformer in actual working environment.However,there's few or no special research on this method of test at home and abroad up to now.In this paper,3D non-working magnetic field and resultant magnetic field of current transformer's core under non uniformly-distributed equal ampere-turns test are solved with 3D finite element method to reveal the principle of this method of test.The trends of these magnetic fields about primary turns' concentrated angle on current transformer's core are also analyzed.It has indicated that the magnetic field of current transformer's core caused from the change of primary turns' concentrated angle on the core could simulate the stray magnetic field of the core caused from the external currents and short circuit fault.

Abstract:The core saturation of current transformers is one of the key obstructions in the development of highly reliable protective approaches and devices of power systems. A novel structure current transformer with shielding coils is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The coils are enwound outside the measurement winding of the current transformer, and each couple of coils are located at the opposite position relative to the diameter of the core, and connected in opposed-polarity. With the opposed-polarity connecting coils the magnetic field in the core produced by its adjacent phase current in a three-phase system can be shielded, so that the core saturation can be avoided. However, the coils do not influence the main magnetic flux that is caused only by the same phase current.

Abstract:Accurate calculation of magnetic field and reduction of eddy current loss to eliminate local overheating of tank are the focus of traction transformer research. In this paper, a large-capacity traction transformer is established, and the leakage magnetic field and eddy current loss of the transformer tank are calculated by the layered subdivision method and the surface impedance method. To reduce eddy current loss, the plate-shaped magnetic shielding and electromagnetic shielding are arranged in the tank wall. And the simulation results show that plate-shaped magnetic shielding has better shielding effectiveness compared with electromagnetic shielding. Based on the plate-shaped magnetic shield a tile-shaped magnetic shield is proposed to further reduce the leakage magnetic field and loss of the tank. By analyzing the shielding effect of tile-shaped shielding at different heights and widths, the tile shielding structure with the best shielding effect is obtained.

Abstract:This paper presented an effective shielding design of magnetic fields generated by unidirectional current.Theoretical formulas and numerical computation software based on boundary element method (BEM) are employed to evaluate the shielding effectiveness (SE) of cylindrical shell. It is shown that ungrounded or one-end-grounded metal shell is ineffective for such magnetic fields. SE can be obtained by connecting the two ends of the conducting shell with low impedance connector, or alternatively, grounding the two ends. The experimental results also support these conclusions.

Abstract:-Accurately measuring the current is crucial for assessing the operational status of the line. The tunnel transmission approach presents challenges due to its intricate line layout in limited space. Utilizing non-contact current measurement offers a superior alternative. To suppress the potential magnetic interference in the transmission tunnel, a novel M-shaped magnetic shielding design for current measurement is proposed. The structure is used to measure current in triangularly arranged conductors where magnetic interference exists at random position. First, a one-dimensional and two-dimensional sensor system based on a triangular arrangement of conductors are used to analyze the magnetic field. Then, the structure of the magnetic shielding is derived. The relationship between the geometrical parameters of shielding structure and the position of the sensors with mean shielding uncertainty (MSU) is discussed by finite element analysis (FEA) method. At current of 2000 A in the conductors, the lowest MSU for the M-shape shielding structure (0.19%) is significantly lower than the lowest MSU for the C-shape shielding (1.63%). Moreover, the M-shaped shielding fits better with the geometry of conductors. In addition, thickness of the shielding structure, position of shielding structure and position of sensors are optimized based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The FEA method is used to simulate magnetic field interference acting on a three-phase AC current with an amplitude of 2000A. The two-dimensional sensor system with shielding structure can reduce the root mean square error (RMSE) of current to be measured from 14.42% to 3.79%.

Abstract:In recent years, the new type design of current transformer with bushing structure has been widely used in the distribution network system due to its advantages of miniaturization, high mechanical strength, maintenance-free, safety and environmental protection. The internal temperature field distribution is an important characteristic parameter to characterize the thermal insulation and aging performance of the transformer, and the internal temperature field distribution is mainly derived from the joule heat generated by the primary side guide rod after flowing through the current. Since the electric environment is a transient field and the thermal environment changes slowly with time as a steady field under the actual conditions, it is more complex and necessary to study the electrothermal coupling field of current transformer (CT). In this paper, a 3D simulation model of a new type design of current transformer for distribution network based on electric-thermal coupling is established by using finite element method (FEM) software. Considering that the actual thermal conduction process of CT is mainly by conduction, convection and radiation, three different kinds of boundary conditions such as solid heat transfer boundary condition, heat convection boundary condition and surface radiation boundary condition are applied to the CT. Through the model created above, the temperature rise process and the distribution characteristics of temperature gradient of the inner conductor under different current, different ambient temperatures and different core diameters conditions are studied. Meanwhile, the hottest temperature and the maximum temperature gradient difference are calculated. According to this, the position of weak insulation of the transformer is determined. The research results can provide a reference for the factory production of new type design of current transformer.

Abstract:To enable the realization of ultra-low magnetic fields for scientific and technological research, magnetic shielding is required to create a space with low residual magnetic field and high shielding factors. The shielding factors of magnetic shields are due to nonlinear material properties, the geometry and structure of the shields, and the external magnetic fields. Magnetic shielding is used in environments full of random realistic disturbances, resulting in an arbitrary and random external magnetic field, and in this case, the shielding effect is hard to define simply by the shielding factors. A new method to simulate and predict a dynamic internal space magnetic field wave is proposed based on the Finite Element method (FEM) combined with the Jiles-Atherton (JA) model. By simulating the hysteresis behavior of the magnetic shields and establishing a dynamic model, the new method can simulate dynamic magnetic field changes inside magnetic shields as long as the external disturbances are known. The shielding factors under an AC external field with a sine wave and certain frequencies are calculated to validate the feasibility of the new method. A real-time wave of internal magnetic flux density under an AC triangular wave external field is simulated directly with the new method versus a method that splits the triangular wave into several sine waves by a Fourier transform, divides the shielding factors, and then adds the quotients together. Moreover, real-time internal waves under some arbitrary fields are measured. Experimental internal magnetic flux density waves of a 4-layer magnetically shielded room (MSR) at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) fit the simulated results well, taking experimental errors into account.

Abstract:Abstrac t In the testing of high current transformer performance under interference from external current, it is very difficult to reproduce the high current in adjacent bus-bar or eccentric primary bus-bar. To overcome the testing difficulty, this manuscript presents an effective and simple method named as Non-uniform Equivalent Magnetomotive Force (NEMMF) Method, which uses a single non-uniformly distributed testing winding to reproduce the magnetic field from adjacent and concentric primary bus-bars simultaneously. The principle of the NEMMF method is demonstrated and proved by magnetic circuit method, and some key formulas determining the parameters of testing winding have been derived. The NEMMF method is then verified by numerical simulation using Finite Element Method (FEM).

Abstract:One drawback of contactless current measurement by magnetic sensor is that its detected results can be easily affected by the superposition of the external magnetic interference. Damping the effect of the noise is complex and delicate without the knowledge of the interference. The usage of magnetic shielding is one potent way to compensate the shortcoming. However, complete magnetic shielding fails to provide the shielding for the shielding only happens within the material. Therefore, in this paper, a separated double-layer structure with the gap is proposed for large current measurement with strong magnetic noise from random places. The ambition is to keep the targeted magnetic field within the shielding stable even when exposed to strong magnetic interference environment. Parameters of the designed structure are investigated and the validation of the structure is confirmed by finite element analysis method when the magnitude of the current under measurement ranging up to 1000 A. From FEA method, when the interference is at arbitrary places around the conductor, the standard deviation without and with noise is less than 0.13, authenticating the efficacy of this shielding structure.
Research on the Methods of Measuring High Frequency Small Current in Large Power Frequency Current by Current Transformer

Abstract:Current transformer (CT) with the structure of iron-core coil can detect the partial discharge to reflect the insulation state of the equipment, or measure the sweep current in the frequency response method to judge the mechanical state of the transformer winding. In these cases, the CT only need to measure the small current with high frequency in the conductor, but sometimes there will be large power frequency current in the measured conductor. The signal induced by this power frequency current will be superimposed on the output of the CT, so that the high frequency signal is easily submerged in the interference of the power frequency signal. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio of measurement, this paper proposes the double coils compensation method and the double integral resistors method from the perspectives of coil and integral circuit respectively, and conducts experimental verification. The experimental results show that due to the nonlinearity of iron-core, the double coils compensation method cannot obtain satisfactory measurement results. While the double integral resistors method can effectively suppress the interference caused by the power frequency current, and has little effect on the measurement of high frequency current, which significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio of measurement.

Abstract:Magnetic field (MF) sensing and interpretation remains an active area of research for source current reconstruction and measurement applications. One such area is large current measurement for power system components with contact less MF sensing. The output of recently made available magnetic sensors is favorable for large current measurement applications. This stimulates development of a noncontact magnetic sensor-based large electric current measurement system for fixed conductors to be employed in power systems. However, the presence of strong magnetic noise from near equipment imposes restriction on the use of sensitive magnetic sensor in open air where magnetic noise sources operating at the same frequency may distort the sensor output. The novelty of this paper is the application of MF sensor inside magnetic shielding layers for large current measurement. High-permeability Mu-metal is employed and arranged in three arc-shaped layers for designing a semicircular special shielding arrangement. The application of the method and design is demonstrated for large current carrying conductor arranged inside a gas-insulated switchgear. The measurement system is first validated by the finite-element analysis method and then tested with a comprehensive experimental setup in the presence of strong magnetic noise stimulus of 0.28 T generated by a strong neodymium magnet. The resultant apparatus is tested for current of up to 1000 A with a resolution of 0.01 and error less than 3 in the worst case scenario. The prototype demonstrated excellent linearity during experimental validation of current measurement of 100-1000 A in the presence of magnetic noise stimuli at different positions where the standard deviation between slopes value for sensor response to input current (100-1000 A) curve for six different test cases remains only 0.83.
