Abstract:Porous SiC ceramics with quasi-basswood microstructure were fabricated from basswood powder, phenolic resin and silicon powder through the following steps: carbonizing at preset temperatures for 2-4h, in situ reaction sintering at 1 450-1 600 ℃ for 0.5-2 h, and removing excessive Si at 1 700 ℃ for 0.5-2 h.Thermo-gravimetric analysis was applied to reveal the pyrolysis behaviors of wood powder and phenolic resin.Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were employed to characterize and analyze the microstructures and phase identification of woodceramics and final porous SiC products.Pore size distributions of woodceramics and porous SiC were revealed by mercury intrusion method. In addition,the effects of carbonization temperature, carbonizing speed, forming pressure, phenolic resin content and SiC content on apparent porosity and three point bending strength of final porous SiC were also discussed.The results show that woodceramics are carbon in partially graphitized amorphous state. Porous SiC prepared are composed of the major phase βSiC and little residual Si.Under optimized conditions the macroporous ceramics with apparent porosity of more than 50% and average bending strength of about 13 MPa are obtained. The pore size distribution is in the range of 10-60 μm.
