Abstract:A TiC/Ni3Al surface coating was fabricated on the steel substrate by casting and reaction synthesis. The phases, microstructure and interface morphology of the coating were studied, the hardness and wear resistance were measured as well. The results show that the reaction of Ti-C-3Ni-Al system is fully completed with the products of TiC and Ni3Al. TiC particulates 1~3 μm in diameter are mounted in Ni3Al matrix. With increase of TiC, TiC particulates have slight growth, which are distributed more uniformly, and the coating is much denser. The interface between the coating and steel substrate has good metallurgical bonding. Interface morphology is varied with the TiC content of the coating. When the content of TiC is less than 45wt%, the coating is integrated with a gradient distribution of Ni, Al, Ti, Fe from the coating to the interface. When content of TiC is equal to or more than 45wt%, the coating is delaminated. The hardness and wear resistance of the thermal resistant surface composite coatings increase with increasing TiC content, which are substantially higher than those of the cast steel.
