Abstract:Fibre sensors exhibit a number of advantages over other sensors such as high sensitivity, electric insulation, corrosion resistance, interference rejection and so on. And laser self-mixing interference can accurately detect the phase difference of feedback light. In this paper, a novel laser self-mixing interference fibre sensor that combines the advantages of fibre sensors with those of laser self-mixing interference is presented. Experimental configurations are set up to study the relationship between laser power output and phase of laser feedback light when the fibre trembles or when the fibre is stretched or pressed. The theoretical analysis of pressure sensors based on laser self-mixing interference is indicated to accord with the experimental results.

Abstract:An optical fiber pressure sensor was designed,fabricated and characterized.It employed a Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer and simple intensity-demodulation technology.A square silicon cup processed by anisotropic etching serves as sensitive element for the better consistency than that of circular diaphragm.A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is introduced to reduce the nonlinearity due to the non-planarity of the deflection.Reference light generated from a 2×2 optical fiber coupler is used to decrease the influence of intensity variations of the light source.Single-value measurement was achieved under the pressure range from 0 to 38 kPa.The experimental results demonstrate an upmost relative sensitivity of 0.7%/kPa and a reasonable repeatability,consisting well with the theoretical analysis and simulation.A new method of multi-wave or multi-sensor is presented to expand the measurement range with high sensitivity.

Abstract:A reflective displacement sensor utilizing three fibers, one transmitting and two receiving with different core diameters, is described in this paper. On the basis of optical field distribution of multimode fiber, the intensity compensation mechanism of this sensor is analyzed in great detail, at the same time the displacement modulating functions and corresponding simulating carves are presented. Results show that this sensor can effectively compensate for variations in the source intensity, for losses in the optical fibers, and for variations in the reflectivity of the reflector surface.

Abstract:This work presents a high-precision fiber optic pressure sensor based on frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser interference. The pressure sensor is primarily composed of a diaphragm-type Fabry–Pérot (F–P) cavity, with the diaphragm fabricated using high-elasticity SUS631 stainless steel. The external air pressure causes the center of the elastic diaphragm to deform, and this deformation results in a change in the F–P cavity length. The FMCW laser-interference method was used to demodulate the change in the length of the cavity and realize high-precision pressure measurements. The experimental results showed that when the pressure measurement is in the range of 0 kPa–600 kPa, an accuracy of 3.8 Pa can be obtained. In addition, the sensor had very good linearity with pressure change (R2 = 0.999 94), repeatability, and stability.

A Novel High-Sensitivity Fiber Grating Sensor for Simultaneous Measurement of Temperature and Pressure

Abstract:A novel sensor based on a single fiber Bragg grating is described.The sensor is configured by encapsulating half of a fiber Bragg grating in a polymer filled metal cylinder and fixing the other half to the metal cylinder.The fixed part of the fiber Bragg grating is immune to the strain while the other part is sensitive to both the strain and the temperature,therefore the novel structure can realize the separate sense of strain and temperature.Using a novel tactic to transfer the applied pressure to the axial extended-strain on the fiber Bragg grating,the pressure sensitivity can be greatly improved.The results show that this novel sensor can simultaneously measure pressure and temperature,meanwhile the pressure sensitivity reaches to 9.65×10-3MPa-1,which is about 4770 times larger than that of the bare fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:A mono-fiber optic pressure sensor aimed to reduce the size of sensors is designed. A single optic fiber is used to replace the traditional optic fiber bundle, and to collect the light reflected by an elastic spherical diaphragm, which is part of the light emitted out by itself. The single optic fiber works as emitting light fiber as well as receiving light fiber. The diaphragm coils when force is performed upon, and light intensity received by the fiber changes depending on the deformation of the elastic spherical diaphragm. The relationship between sensitivities of the sensor and the distance from the terminal of fiber to the initial diaphragm before force performed upon are researched experimentally. According to the analysis of virtual light spot, light distributing theory is modified, and it makes the consequence of calculations fit the results of experiment well. The sensor with the unique structure can not only minish the size of sensor but also solve the un-detecting-area problem of multi-fiber optic sensors.

Abstract:A new type of miniature pressure sensor based on a hybrid Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer is proposed. The in-line air cavity of the sensor is a micro-confocal air cavity, which is formed by splicing together a single mode fiber (SMF) and a solid-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with the specific splicing parameters. The sensor is fabricated by simple steps involving only fusion splicing, cleaving and polishing. Optical interference principle of the sensor is analyzed and the parameters in sensor design are discussed. Due to low propagation loss, experiments show that the reflection spectrum of the sensor has a fringe contrast of more than 30 dB. By tracing the trough wavelength in the interference spectrum, the pressure can be demodulated. Within the pressure measurement range of 0-1 MPa, the sensitivity is -193 pm/MPa. The experimental results indicate that the deflection is consistent with the theoretical analysis and the sensor has a good linearity. Easy fabrication, low-cost and high-contrast make it appropriate for practical application.

This article gives a detailed description of fiber-optic intensity-modulated pressure sensors in most common use and rapid developing fiber-optic distributed modulated pressure sensors at present.

Abstract:A new type of on-line fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) pressure sensor was proposed.The F-P cavity of the sensor is a micro-ellipsoidal air cavity,which is formed by splicing together a SMF and a solid-core PCF with the specific splicing parameters.The pressure sensor based on F-P interference principle has many advantages such as all-silica structure,simple production process and small temperature cross-talk.In this paper,the relationship between the diameter of the short axis (cavity length) and the radius of the major axis (the effective radius of the sensitive film) in the sealed ellipsoidal air F-P cavity was analyzed.The relationship between the shape of the air F-P cavity and the cavity loss was analyzed by Gaussian beam transmission theory.The relationship among the center deflection,the film thickness and the effective radius of the SiO2 sensitive membrane was analyzed.The pressure sensitive characteristic model of SiO2 film was established,and the numerical analysis and finite element simulation were carried out under the condition of uniform load.The relationship between the wavelength and the pressure was simulated,and it provided a theoretical basis for the design of optical fiber micro-pressure sensor.

Abstract:In this paper, a highly sensitive pressure sensor based on fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) and the Vernier effect (VE) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We employ a closed capillary-based F P I s for the sensing cavity, and an F P I r created through femtosecond laser refractive index modulation for the reference cavity, which remains impervious to pressure changes. Connecting these two FPIs in series produces a VE-based cascaded sensor with a clear spectral envelope. The femtosecond laser micromachining technique provides precise control over the length of F P I r and facilitates adjustments to the VE's amplification degree. Experimental results reveal significant pressure sensitivities of -795.96p m/M P a and -3219.91p m/M P a, respectively, representing a 20-fold and 80-fold improvement compared to F P I s (-39.80p m/M P a). This type of sensor has good sensitivity amplification and, due to its all-fiber structure, can be a promising candidate for high-temperature and high-pressure sensing, especially in harsh environments.

Abstract:A novel reflective fiber optic displacement sensor based on reflected light intensity is proposed, which utilizes a reflective grating panel to modulate transmitted light. Theoretical calculation and simulation of the fiber probe are carried out to analyze the sensor performance. Experiments are completed and the result shows that the fiber optic displacement measurement system has high accuracy and large measurement range.

Abstract:A simple MEMS optical fiber pressure sensor with the Fabry-Perot interferometer configuration is constructed that is based on a square silicon diaphragm and the intensity demodulation technology. A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is employed to minimize the non-planarity of the deflection, and a reference light generated by a 2x2 optical fiber coupler is used to reduce the errors that are produced by the intensity variations of the light source. The theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results all show that the pressure sensor has reasonable sensitivity, stability and measurement range. With a low cost and simple fabrication process, this sensor has great potentials for mass production and commercialization.

Abstract:A demodulation algorithm for fiber-optic extrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer (EFPI) pressure sensor is proposed and demonstrated in this chapter. This method provides a wide range of pressure measurement and overcomes disadvantages of the traditional small sensing scale. The length of the sensing cavity could be recovered by using three quadrature phase-shifted signals. A theoretical description of the method is given here. An experimental sensing platform and calibrated behavior of the system were set up to prove the method. The results showed that the sensing accuracy is higher than 0.3 μm over a large range of 20 μm.

Abstract:This work reports a low-cost and easy manufactured optical fiber bubble Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometer (FPI) sensor with optimized manufacturing parameters. The microbubble sensor is fabricated by welding a multimode fiber (MMF) to a single-mode fiber (SMF), followed by hydrofluoric acid (HF) corroded and discharge treatment at the end of the MMF. The manufacturing process is explored and optimized. The optical power of the interference light was increased and forming stability of the bubbles was improved by controlling the corrosion time, type of arc discharge, discharge intensity, discharge time, and number of discharges. To study the relationship between the optical power and the subjected pressure and temperature, a theoretical model of sensing principle is established, and finite element simulation is carried out to analyze the deformation of bubbles under the influence of the external environment. Experimental results show that the sensor has a pressure sensitivity of dBm/MPa and a temperature sensitivity of dBm/°C. The study gives the influence of multiple preparation parameters on the quality of the sensor, which has good scientific value. The sensor has good prospects in pressure measurement.

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic pressure sensor with reflecting optical structure for the simultaneous measurement of temperature is presented. The operation principle of the sensor is based on the photoelastic effect and the temperature signal is extracted from the fluctuation of the quasi working point of the sensor due to the thermal effect of the wave plate. The wave plate used here is not the 1/4 lambda as used in typical photoelastic pressure sensors in order to obtain the best response of linearity. Two kinds of bridge compensation techniques are used for the pressure and the temperature respectively. The experimental results show that once the temperature is determined, the fluctuation of the pressure output can be eliminated, and more accurate pressure meter is available.

Abstract:In this paper, an optical fiber Fabry–Pérot (FP) sensor for micro-pressure measurement is proposed. The FP interferometric cavity is composed of an end face of the incident optical fiber and a sensitive silicon diaphragm. The sensitive silicon diaphragm creatively utilizes a beam-membrane structure which is fabricated by micro-electro-mechanical system manufacturing technology. The finite element method simulation results show that the beam-membrane structure can achieve higher sensitivity and better linearity. The sensor performance test platform is built by a ASE-wide spectrum light source, optical spectrum analyzer, micro-pressure gas source and so on. The phase demodulation method is employed to demodulate the cavity length signal from the spectrum. The measure range of the sensor is 0–10 KPa, and the experimental sensitivity of the cavity length can reach to 242 nm KPa−1.

Abstract:A novel integrated optical fiber sensor was proposed for temperature, pressure and flow measurement. One fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was fixed in the target for temperature measurement. A couple of FBGs, which were stuck on the inner wall of a hollow cylindrical cantilever, were used to measure flow rate. Another couple of FBGs were fixed on the outer wall of a thin-walled cylinder to measure pressure. Theoretical relationships between the Bragg wavelengths of FBGs and temperature, pressure and flow rate, have been established by numerical analysis respectively. Meanwhile, experiments have been carried out to obtain the performance of the proposed integrated sensor. Experimental results showed that the resolutions of temperature, pressure and flow rate were 0.1 degrees C, 0.006 MPa, 0.17m(3)/h and the measurement ranges were 10 similar to 95 degrees C, 0 similar to 10 MPa and 0 similar to 18.5m(3)/h, respectively. In addition, the precision of sensor in temperature, pressure and flow rate were 0.12%, 0.5%, 1.5%, respectively. As we know, the proposed flowmeter is more compact with good resolution, wide measurement range, high accuracy and easy fabrication. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
