Abstract:A new chemical method for preparing ultrafine amorphous Ni85P15 alloy particles with uniform size and spherical shape is reported. The particles were prepared by reduction of nickel chloride with sodium hypophosphite initiated with a drop of potassium borohydride solution at room temperature. The preparation mechanism, which consists of primary nucleation of NiB followed by autocatalytic deposition of the components, is discussed. The amorphous structure of the particles was identified by X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that nickel and phosphorus are present as an alloy. Transmission election microscopy revealed that the particles are uniform and spherical with a diameter of about 100 nm.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) nickel nanoparticles have been prepared via the thermal decomposition of nickel organometallic precursors in a reaction mixture containing alkylamine, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and magnetic measurement. The employed alkylamine can serve as both solvent and reducing agent. The as-synthesized nickel nanoparticles are air-stable, and their sizes can be readily tuned by the variation of surfactant concentration and reaction temperature. The crystalline phase control was achieved by adjusting alkylamine concentration, heating rate and reaction temperature. Magnetic measurements showed that hcp Ni nanoparticles have quite different magnetic properties compared to fcc Ni nanoparticles.

Abstract:An analytical approach was developed to investigate nucleation, recalescence and growth of Ti-48Al (at.%) alloy droplets during their flight in a gas atomization process. Evolution of microstructure of the solidified powders was quantitatively investigated using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron back-scatter diffraction. Relationships among the initial number of nuclei, liquid/solid interface velocity and cooling rate have been established. Results showed that statistical nucleation events increased exponentially with increasing droplet size, and the powder microstructures were transformed from a twinned spherical segment into a concentric liquid/solid interface geometry. Variations of initial temperature, cooling rate and solid fraction of the droplets as a function of cooling durations for the droplets with various sizes were investigated.

Abstract:Amorphous Ni-P ultrafine particles with no Ni(OH)2 as impurity have been prepared by chemical reduction method, i.e. by the reaction of the aqueous solutions of nickel chloride and sodium hypophosphite. Among factors such as the initial pH value of the reaction system, additives and the reaction time, it has been shown that the initial pH value is the most important in determining the yield and the properties of the products. The products have been characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and DSC, and the results revealed that, with an initial pH value of 11, amorphous Ni-P ultrafine particles with the average diameter of ca. 150 nm and relatively even chemical and topological distribution can be obtained.

Abstract:The ultrafine Ag powders with relatively high tap density were prepared by a chemical reduction method using AgNO3 as raw material. Hydroquinone and chain triacontanol amine were chosen as reductant and dispersant agent, respectively. The laser fineness gage was used to investigate the grain size distribution and the average diameter of Ag powders. The morphology, grain size and agglomerating state of Ag powders was examined by SEM and TEM. The phase composition of Ag powders was characterized by XRD. The results show that the grain size of Ag powders can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of AgNO3, the ratio of AgNO3 to reductant and dispersant agent dosage. The Ag powder obtained is of face-centered cubic crystal structure with quasi-orbicular morphology. The average tap density of the silver powders is up to 4.0 g/cm(3).

Abstract:This note reports a successful preparation of a new catalyst particles through the reaction between Ni2+ and H2PO2- in aqueous solution at room temperature. X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that the particles are in amorphous and alloying state. Transmission electron micrograph shows that the particles are spherial and the size distribution is very narrow. The average diameter of the particles is determined to be about 100nm which is a "ultrafine" scale.

Abstract:A series of Fe-P-B ultrafine amorphous alloy particles has been prepared by the chemical reduction method. The composition and size of the particles have been effectively adjusted. Mössbauer spectroscopy in addition to some other techniques has been used to investigate the reaction process, the factors that influence the preparation, the crystallization of the particles, and the interactions between the components within them. The results indicate that the co-deposition of iron, phosphorus and boron atoms in the solution at room temperature forms Fe-P-B amorphous alloy particles, and a preferential bonding of Fe-P bond to Fe-B one exists in the particles.

Abstract:Ni–P–B ultrafine amorphous alloy particles have been prepared by chemical reaction of nickel chloride, sodium hypophosphite, and potassium borohydride in aqueous solution. Two samples prepared at different initial pH values (pH=5 and 9) have been characterized by different experimental methods. X-ray and electron diffraction indicated that both samples were amorphous in nature, and transmission electron microscopy gave average diameters of 50 and 30 nm for particles prepared at pH=5 and 9, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that nickel and phosphorus existed exclusively in their elemental states, while boron existed mainly in its elemental state but with some trace of its oxide on the surface. The crystallization process of the amorphous samples was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and by x-ray diffraction after annealing the samples at various temperatures. The results are correlated with the microstructure of the as-prepared samples. It is found that when the initial pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 9, the pH value can be maintained automatically throughout the reaction and the sample thus formed has a fairly homogeneous microstructure.

Abstract:AgI nanoparticle has been reported to exhibit size-dependent properties. In the paper, we reported the use of combinations of surfactants, such as AOT, SDS, PVP and TWEEN20, to control the AgI synthesis. AgI nanoparticles can be obtained with different sizes. Measured and confirmed by DLS and TEM, the nanoparticles can be massively and evenly prepared with the sizes less than 20nm. The post-processing of extraction for the nanoparticles is relatively simple and environmentally friendly. Further experimental results demonstrate that the stability of the nanoparticles is greatly dependent on the formula of the surfactant compositions. The method presented here is a potential high-throughput technique that could be applied to synthesize many other nanoparticles.

Abstract:The preparation and characterization of silver powders with spheric shape and different sizes by chemical reduction of silver ions in the presence of ethanol amine using hydrochinone (C6H6O2) as the reducing agent are described. The size distribution, microstructure, and the phase composition of the obtained Ag Powders were characterized by the Laser Particle Size Analyzer, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Ag powder was in face-centered cubic crystal structure with spheric morphology. The average tap density of silver powders is up to 4.0g/cm3. It was also found that the size of the Ag particles can be adjusted conveniently to a certain degree by varying the silver ions content, the addition amount of dispersing agent, the aging time, the temperature of the reaction, and the concentration ratio of hydrochinone to Ag+.

Abstract:The mechanochemical reaction has been applied to synthesizing nano-sized amorphous Cu40Zr60 alloy particles. The structure of Cu–Zr particles has been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis. The tests show that the amorphous Cu–Zr particles are around 40 nm in size. The crystallization temperature of the nano-sized amorphous Cu40Zr60 particles is lower than that of the corresponding micron-scale particles. The formation mechanism of the nano-sized amorphous Cu40Zr60 alloy particles is also discussed.

Abstract:Mono-disperse spherical nickel particles were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method with nickel sulfate as raw material,hydrazine as reductive agent,and sodium hydroxide as adjusting pH value of the solution.The prepared powder samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),thermo-gravimetry(TG) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The results indicated that the high purity spherical particles had the face-centered cubic(fcc) crystal structure and their final diameters were between 100 and 400 nm with narrow size distribution.The optimal technological conditions were obtained as that the concentration of Ni2+ was 0.35 mol/L,the ratio [N2H4]/[Ni2+] 4.0,the ratio [NaOH]/[Ni2+] 2.5,and the reaction temperature 80℃.Moreover,the original concentration of nickel controlled the shape,size and agglomeration of the nickel particles,the temperature controlled the reaction rate,and the amounts of NaOH and hydrazine affected the purity of nickel powder.

Abstract:Hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ni nanoparticles with a highly narrow size distribution have been prepared via a thermal decomposition approach using nickel acetate tetrahydrate as a precursor. The particle morphology, microstructure and magnetic properties were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results have shown that the particle size and shape can be controlled by using alkylphosphine surfactants, and the control of crystalline phase was achieved by adjusting the concentration of oleylamine in the reaction mixture. The formation of metastable hcp crystalline phase favors a low concentration of oleylamine. The magnetic measurements have shown that the magnetic properties of hcp Ni nanoparticles are quite different from those of face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni nanoparticles. A very low magnetization has been observed on hcp Ni nanoparticles. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fe-B, Fe-Ni-B, and Ni-B ultrafine alloy particles have been prepared by reduction of metal ions in aqueous solution with borohydride. It is shown that iron and nickel contents in the particles can be easily varied by changing the Ni/(Ni+Fe) ratio in the aqueous solution; however, the boron content is constant when the concentration of the borohydride is kept constant. Several experimental results show that the alloy particles are amorphous. The scanning electron microscopic image indicates that the surface morphology of Fe35Ni15B26 alloy particles looks like cotton clusters. From the high-resolution image, the average size of the high-resolution image, the average size of the particles was determined to be about 30±5 nm and the fine structure of the particles indicates that there is an obvious boundary between the outer shell with a thickness of about 5 nm and the inner core with a diameter of about 20 nm. The particles are partially crystallized on the outer shell while the inner core is almost completely amorphous.

Abstract:<p>The Ni-11Mo-8Al-3Ta-2Cr-1Re spherical powders of <150 μm were successfully prepared by the novel technique called supreme-speed plasma rotating electrode process (SS-PREP). The morphology of the atomized powders was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). A formation mechanism of some irregular particles appeared in the powders was described and the differences of their microstructures were analyzed by the image-replicating method. The composition differences of the irregular particles were multi-confirmed by EDS. The particle size distribution (PSD) data of the SS-PREP Ni-11Mo-8Al-3Ta-2Cr-1Re powders were well simulated with the newly reported double peak atomization assumption. The relationship between the particle size of the atomized Ni-based powders and the rotating speed of SS-PREP was also discussed and recorded.</p>

Abstract:In a simple experimental condition without dustproof equipment, satisfactory spherical magnetite particles of narrow size distribution had been obtained by aging ferrous hydroxid gels in the presence of nitrate ion, this note reports a new result according to the modified experimental procedure, in which included the mixed of reactants, elimination of oxygen and magnetic seperation etc. According to transmission electron micrographs the mean diameter of particles is about 0.5 mu m.

Abstract:A novel method for the synthesis of amorphous Ni-B nanoparticles has been developed using a mechanochemical displacement reaction by high energy ball milling. Based on various characterizations including XRD, ICP, BET, DSC, SEM, TEM and XPS, the synthesized Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles are present in the form of uniform and homogeneously distributed ultrafine nanoparticles with the size around 5 nm. Larger specific surface area and higher thermal stability can be obtained by such mechanochemical method than the conventional wet-chemical reduction method. The present work provides a novel method for preparation of other amorphous nanoparticles, and greatly expands the industrial application space of Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.
