Abstract:We are familiar with English scientist John Dalton who proposed the existence of atoms. He also found the law of partial pressure from his experiment on the mixture of gases. Actually Dalton performed the above gas experiment in order to suggest the atomic theory of matter. In modern terminology a fundamental property of gas mixtures discovered by Dalton (1801) is: the pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the pressures each of its components would exert if alone in the volume of the mixture at the same temperature. Thus Dalton's law implies that each component acts independently in its contribution to the total pressure, or, more picturesquely, that "every gas is a vacuum to every other gas." Abstract:To get better correlation results of vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) of mixture systems, it is usually necessary to select the suitable mixing rule. The modifications of force parameter a have obtained good results in both theory and application. However, the research on co-volume parameter b is less and usually empirical. A new modified method for co-volume b was presented. In the revised mixing rule, the molecular shape factors obtained from Leach et al were introduced to amend co-volume b on the basis of Mie potential-energy and London dispersion theory. Thus, the interactive parameter lij in co-volume b was dependent on the molecular shape factorsθ , φ, and critical parameters of the components. Without experimental data, molecular shape factors and interactive parameter lij could be obtained, which could be used to reflect the actual situations of mixture systems. The VLE calculation results for 16 kinds of different systems were given by using modified co-volume parameter b in MHV1/LCVM/HV mixing rules combined with PR EOS and NRTL models, and the results were compared with the results of using b=∑xibi in MHV1/LCVM/HV mixing rule combined with PR EOS and NRTL models. The models with the modified co-volume b were better than those with b=∑xibi to some extent.

Abstract:The equation of state, self-diffusion, and viscosity coefficients of helium have been investigated by quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations in the warm dense matter regime. Our simulations are validated through the comparison with the reliable experimental data. The calculated principal and reshock Hugoniots of liquid helium are in good agreement with the gas-gun data. On this basis, we revisit the issue for helium, i.e., the possibility of the instabilities predicted by chemical models at around 2000 GPa and 10 g/cm(3) along the pressure isotherms of 6309, 15 849, and 31 623 K. Our calculations show no indications of instability in this pressure-temperature region, which reconfirm the predictions of previous QMD simulations. The self-diffusion and viscosity coefficients of warm dense helium have been systematically investigated by the QMD simulations. We carefully test the finite-size effects and convergences of statistics, and obtain numerically converged self-diffusion and viscosity coefficients by using the Kubo-Green formulas. The present results have been used to evaluate the existing one component plasma models. Finally, the validation of the Stokes-Einstein relationship for helium in the warm dense regime is discussed. Abstract:We designed an original method of measuring the value of intermolecular interaction potential and universal gas con- stant R with simple instruments at the same time. According to the theory of momentum conservation, and CO2 gas can be seen as Van der Waals gas at room temperature, we design the integrated experiment which can be done at room temperature and can be applied to lecturing. And this can solve the problem of the lack of gas dynamic theory experiment in the college physics class.

Abstract:This experimental study measured the pressure-volume temperature -composition (PVTx) properties in the gas phase for the binary system of dimethyl ether (DME) + 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) at temperatures between 313.53 and 383.49 K, pressures between 541.8 and 3170.2 kPa, densities between 0.2311 and 1.4831 mol-dm(-3), and compositions between 0.2326 and 0.8258 mole fractions of HFC-134a by using the isochoric method. The data were obtained with standard uncertainties of 1.5 kPa for pressure, 0.006 K for temperature, and 0.00025 for composition. Further, a truncated virial equation of state was developed for the binary DME/HFC-134a system by data fitting. The deviations generated by this equation turned out to be within +/- 0.13% in pressure and +/- 0.15% in density.

Abstract:High pressure hydrogen storage has become an important transportation channel in areas of new energy development and utilization. Actual hydrogen demonstrations require the exploration of the physical and chemical properties in detail before the practical employment, which is completely different from the ideal gas under high pressure conditions. However, the existing real-gas state equations are not easy to use in calculation of high pressure hydrogen due to its complex behavior, and may lead to an unacceptable error. In this paper, a real-gas state equation of hydrogen in a simplified form is proposed. Compared with the NIST datum, the results obtained from this equation have a maximum error 1.1% and 3.8% respectively within the temperature ranges of 253K<T<393K and 173K<T<393K. Also, the proposed equation exhibits higher precision for the state parameters of hydrogen than existing models. Based on the real-gas state equation of hydrogen, formulas of thermodynamic properties which are necessary for solving the hydraulic and thermal aspects of gas transfer are also proposed.

Abstract:Ideal gas is the most fundamental and simple system in thermodynamics, which has extensive applications in energy research and engineering. By reviewing the physical concept of ideal gas, it is found that the current understanding of ideal gas is still inappropriate and ambiguous, making it challenging to reveal the essential difference between ideal and real gases. Therefore, the macro and microscopic definitions and properties of ideal gas need to be reconceptualized. On the microscopic level, an ideal gas is a hypothetical collection of classical masses in irregular motion, which does not involve quantum mechanics; on the macroscopic level, any real gas cannot strictly obey the equation of state of ideal gas. Moreover, the heat capacity is a constant which should be an endogenous attribute of ideal gas model in order to unify the macroscopic and microscopic definitions of ideal gas. Finally, according to the law of heat capacity, the real gas can be divided into three categories: far-ideal, near-ideal, and quasi-ideal. This makes it easier to perform thermodynamic calculations with the assistance of ideal gas. Among them, the far-ideal gas heat capacity is a function of temperature and pressure, the near-ideal gas heat capacity is a single-valued function of temperature, and the quasi-ideal gas heat capacity is a constant.

Abstract:Volumetric measurement technique is one of the most popular methods for determining the amount of hydrogen storage . A new state equation was established which extended the limitations from the ideal gas state equation ,the van der Waals equation and the Gou equation .The new state equation was then employed to describe the p-V-T character of hydrogen and investigate the adsorption quantity of hydrogen storage in resorcin-formaldehyde aerogel under different temperatures and pressures . The new equation was used to describe the density of hydrogen under different tempera-tures and pressures .The results are in good agreement with the experimental data .The differences arising from various underlying physics were carefully analyzed .

Abstract:Natural gas is gaseous fossil fuel consisting primarily of methane (CH4). Argon (Ar) is a precious gas resource among the nonhydrocarbons in natural gas, and it can be separated from the natural gas; thus, it is very necessary to understand the vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) of (Ar + CH4). The investigations on the VLE data of (Ar + CH4) have mostly focused on the temperature range of (>140 K), while studies are relatively scarce below 140 K. In this work, the VLE data of (Ar + CH4) from 95 to 135 K were measured by experiment. Four different mixing rules (HV, MHV1, MHV2, and LCVM) with the same equation of state (PR) and the four equations of state (SRK, PR, PRSV, NM) with the same mixing rule (MHV1) were used to correlate the VLE of (Ar + CH4), respectively. The research results were discussed in detail. In addition, the excess Gibbs free energy of (Ar + CH4) was further analyzed. The results showed that the excess Gibbs free energy of (Ar + CH4) was more than zero, and the curves of excess Gibbs free energy and excess enthalpy of (Ar + CH4) had good symmetry.

Abstract:The design and operation of low temperature processes involving natural gas requires the phase equilibrium knowledge about the mixture (nitrogen (N-2) + methane (CH4)) over extensive pressure and temperature ranges. In this work, the experimental apparatus for the vapor-liquid equilibrium is built, and vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the mixture (N-2 + CH4) have been measured in the temperature range from (110 to 125) K. The experimental method used in this work is a single-cycle type. The vapor-liquid equilibrium experimental data of the mixture (N-2 + CH4) are correlated by the Peng-Robinson equation-of-state + the first Modified Huron Vidal mixing rule + Wilson model, and the adjustable parameters of the activity coefficient are given. The correlated results show that they exhibit a good agreement with the experimental data. The average vapor composition deviation and the maximum vapor composition deviation are 0.0057 and 0.0166, respectively; the average relative pressure deviation and the maximum pressure deviation are 0.75 % and 2.25 %, respectively. In addition, no zoetrope exists in the binary system, and the system reveals slightly positive deviations from ideality from the correlation results.

Abstract:Liquid phase pVT behavior is an important thermodynamic property and can be measured precisely with a constant-volume cell. Based on the fundamental theory of the constant-volume method, a new apparatus for liquid phase pVT measurement was designed, including a constant-volume cell,measurement systems of temperature,pressure,mass and a vacuum system. The volume of the constant-volume cell was calibrated with high purity R134a at a temperature of 294.899 K and a pressure of 21.847 MPa.Then the effect of temperature and pressure on the cell volume was analyzed.The pVT behavior of R134a in liquid phase was measured at a temperature range from 270 K to 295 K and pressure from 1.7 MPa to 21.8 MPa.The experimental results agree well with the reference equation of state,which demonstrates the reliability and accuracy of the apparatus.

Abstract:The non-condensable gas is used to keep the pressure stable in the steam-gas pressurizer. The processes of heat and mass transfer during steam condensation in the presence of non condensable gas play an important role and the thermal hydraulic characteristics in the pressurizer is particularly complicated due to the non-condensable gas. The effects of non-condensable gas on the process of heat and mass transfer during steam condensation were experimental investigated. A steam condensation experimental system under high pressure and natural convection was built and nitrogen was chosen in the experiments. The steam and nitrogen were considered in thermal equilibrium and shared the same temperature in the vessel under natural convection. In the experiments, the factors, for instance, pressure, mass fraction of nitrogen, subcooling of wall and the distribution of nitrogen in the steam, had been taken into account. The rate of heat transfer of steam condensation on the vertical wall with nitrogen was obtained and the heat transfer coefficients were also calculated. The characteristics curve of heat and mass transfer during steam condensation with non-condensable gas under high pressure were obtained and an empirical correlation was introduced to calculated to heat transfer coefficient of steam condensation with nitrogen which the calculation results showed great agreement with the experimental data.
Applicability of Ideal Gas Law in the Air-bearing of Hard Drives

Abstract:This report evaluates the applicability of the ideal gas law in the pressurized air-bearing of hard disk drives when calculating the relative humidity. We employ a semi-analytical numerical method that solves vapor-liquid equilibrium using the Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson equation of state to calculate the saturation pressure of water. The deviation from the ideal gas law is quantified and examined through saturation pressure isotherms. We find that at low temperatures, lighter gases such as helium show little deviation from the ideal gas law, whereas heavier gases such as nitrogen deviate significantly. As temperature increases, the difference between the gases decreases. The results suggest that in areas of low temperature, the non-ideal nature of gases must be taken into account.

Determination of the Boltzmann Constant Using the Differential - Cylindrical Procedure

Abstract:We report in this paper the progresses on the determination of the Boltzmann constant using the acoustic gas thermometer (AGT) of fixed-length cylindrical cavities. First, we present the comparison of the molar masses of pure argon gases through comparing speeds of sound of gases. The procedure is independent from the methodology by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The experimental results show good agreement between both methods. The comparison offers an independent inspection of the analytical results by GC-MS. Second, we present the principle of the novel differential-cylindrical procedure based on the AGT of two fixed-length cavities. The deletion mechanism for some major perturbations is analyzed for the new procedure. The experimental results of the differential-cylindrical procedure demonstrate some major improvements on the first, second acoustic and third virial coefficients, and the excess half-widths. The three acoustic virial coefficients agree well with the stated-of-the-art experimental and theoretical (the ab initio calculation) results. The new method is characterized by much less correction-dependence. The differential-cylindrical procedure results in the preliminary determination of the Boltzmann constant of 1.380 650 6*10^-23 with the relative standard uncertainty of 2.3*10^-6. The new value is in 1.3*10^-6 above the adjusted Boltzmann constant given in CODATA 2010. The resultant gas constant R =8.314 473 J/mol/K with the same the relative standard uncertainty.
